PARISH OF ST. JOSEPH
January 10 ,2016
From the Desk of Fr. Philip Kollithanath
There is an intrinsic affinity between goodness and peace. If we do not have peace in ourselves we cannot bring it to others. “ a peaceful man does more good than a learned man. A passionate man turns even good into evil..” (IC p31). Peaceful man turns all things
into good. A peaceful man is not suspicious. A disturbed person is concerned about others duties while ignoring his own.
We must make every effort to judge ourselves before judging others. Our tendency is to find excuses for ourselves while would not
accept any justification for others. The golden rule, “do unto others what you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31, Mt. 7:12 ) is
very practical on the road to spiritual growth. It enables us to be more self-conscious and less judgmental. Many a time, if we are sincere, we find it more reasonable to accuse ourselves and to excuse others. This will happen when we have true charity and humility.
For people to bear with us, we must learn to bear with them first.
It is easy to associate with good and gentle people. Everyone prefers to be with people of congenial habits. One needs special grace to
get along with unruly, perverse and harsh men. We can observe that some people are at peace with themselves and others while some
do not have it nor do they let others have it either. They are a burden to themselves as well as to others.
We must learn to find peace in humbly enduring the sufferings of this miserable life. It is easy to flee from it. According to the Imitation of Christ, “He who knows best how to suffer will enjoy the greater peace, because he is the conqueror of himself, the master of
the world, a friend of Jesus, and an heir of heaven.”
In this Year of Mercy, the Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us that we have to become prophets of Mercy in this age of individualism which generates an attitude of indifference and unconcern towards faith and fellow beings. We must be merciful to ourselves and
show mercy to others. As beacons of Mercy, we must promote it in the world around us. The end goal is a social awakening where
individuals and communities are permeated with the Heavenly Father’s Merciful Love.
When this starts in the families, children will show more respect for the parents. They will find time to be together,
away from the distracting gadgets, to pray together, to play together, to dialogue together, and to be together in
peace and joy. This atmosphere of peace and joy is missing in many of our families. Frequently children from such
families end up in antisocial and destructive lifestyles. It is time for us to bring back the goodness and peace of our
catholic family tradition before the world destroys all our families with their liberal ideologies. This Year of Mercy
is an opportunity for that.
Sarcament of Baptism—Baptism is a highly sacred event and deserves careful

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Merry Christmas! Share that cheerful greeting with some folks today. They may wonder if you have had
any Elvis sightings lately, attended Star Trek conventions, or were Cleopatra in a previous lifetime. Despite
the skeptics, today is solidly within the Christmas season. In fact, in some strands of the Christian tradition it
represents the clearest manifestation of the mystery of the Incarnation. On Christmas Day, for example, the
Gospel reading is the Prologue of John’s Gospel, which reveals the glory of Christ shining through our humanity precisely in his baptism.
At any rate, this is an ancient feast, celebrated first in Egypt sixteen centuries ago. More than most other
ancient people, the Egyptians understood the life giving properties of water. On this day, they drew water
from the Nile, so central in the history of their people, and reserved it in honor. Many other places copied the
custom, so that St. John Chrysostom wrote of people in Antioch gathering at midnight to collect flowing water
into vessels they brought from home since “today there is a blessing on the water.” At home for dinner tonight, decorate the table with beautiful bowls of water and white candles, toast one another with goblets of
sparkling water, and light a Christmas candle in the window one last time.

Van a encontrar tiempo
