Anatoly Pakhomov Sochi Mayor 1 February 7-23 The XXII Olympic Winter Games February 7 - 23, 2014 • 2,859 athletes from 88 National Olympic Committees participated • 1.1 million spectator tickets for sports sessions were sold • 2 million entrance tickets to the Olympic Park were sold • worldwide coverage, with 159 countries reached on 464 channels • 33 medals won by the Russian Federation national team • the Russian Federation shot to the top of the Olympic overall and gold medal standings 2 THE XXII OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES OF 2014 IN SOCHI The XXII Olympic Winter Games, 7-23 February, 2014, in Sochi, were the first Winter Olympics in the history of the Russian Federation hosted in the unique climatic zone, where the snow-covered mountains are next to the seaside subtropics, and the ski slopes have long been popular with winter sports enthusiasts. The Sochi 2014 Olympics can rightly be called an unparalleled project, because of the large-scale Olympic construction involved. The Games have also gone down in history as the most innovative ones. One of the indigenous provisions was the compact arrangement of competition venues and non-competition facilities, that provided for the ultimate ease of transfers and flawless traffic. As part of preparations for the Games, two clusters of competition venues and facilities (the Mountain and the Coastal clusters) were built from scratch. Besides, a huge urban cluster, encompassing the entire southern territory of Krasnodar krai, was refurbished. New power capacities and facilities, the new under water gas pipeline, the new sewage treatment plant, the new sea terminal and the new airport facilities, unique new roads and railway lines and tracks, with many new bridges and tunnels, numerous new hotels and residential quarters were constructed. The Sochi 2014 Olympic Games torch relay was the longest in the history, with the flame carried across all regions and major cities of Russia, to the North pole, to the bottom of Lake Baikal and to the top of Mount Elbrus. The Olympic torch even made its way to the International Space Station and was taken on a historic spacewalk above Earth. That well-traveled torch was used to light the Olympic cauldron by the Fisht stadium during the Opening Ceremony. The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi were attended by Over 50 Heads of states and governments, 60 delegations of international organizations and ministries of sports. A total of 2,859 athletes from 88 countries competed in a record 98 medal events. Guests from 126 countries arrived in Sochi to support athletes. The Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee sold over 1.1 million tickets for sports sessions, and almost 2 mln tickets to the Olympic Park were sold during the Games. Sochi International Airport on peak days rendered 575 runway operations a day, which is comparable to the intensity of air traffic at major airports of the world. The XXII Olympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi were broadcast worldwide – to 159 countries, on a total of 464 channels. Volunteers earned a lot of high praise for their service. The Russian national team's performance at the Games was a triumph - the first place in gold medal standings (13 medals) as well as the top in the overall medal count (33 medals). Russian athletes demonstrated the best results in the modern history of Russian sports. The Sochi Olympics became a powerful impetus to further development of sports and healthy lifestyles in Russia. Thanks to a range of new advanced facilities, the city of Sochi has become an international sports center and a year-round world-class resort, a popular tourism, recreation and sports resort, a MICE destination with top-notch venues, a city with a significant mission for the entire nation. 3 March 7-16 The XI Paralympic Winter Games March 7-16, 2014 • 547 athletes from 45 countries participated • Over 322,000 spectator tickets for sports sessions were sold • worldwide coverage, with 55 countries reached on 125 channels • 2.1 billion TV viewers • 80 medals won by the Russian Federation national team 4 THE XI PARALYMPIC WINTER GAMES OF 2014 IN SOCHI Following the XXII Olympic Winter Games, March 7-16, 2014, in Sochi, the XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi earned the global recognition as the most successful Paralympics ever staged. The Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games were hosted by the same venues that were used during the Olympic Games and featured a record number of participants and guests, spectators and tickets sold. 547 athletes from 45 countries arrived to contest in competitions. Channels broadcasting the Sochi Paralympics kept attention of the record 2.1 billion viewers. On February 26, the Sochi 2014 Paralympic torch relay started at Cape Dezhnev the easternmost point of the Chukotka Peninsula and of the continent. Every day the Paralympic flame was lit in one of the eight Federal districts of Russia. Every local ceremony of the Paralympic flame was a unique performance: sparks were struck from the anvil by the hammer, from a hammered iron feather of the Firebird, or from a red-hot horseshoe, or a gold bar, from Polar lights, heart-shaped tokens, the rocket nozzle at its take-off, and a laser beam, or as part of Shamanic rituals, or folk performances. A total of 1,699 Paralympic torchbearers participated, and nearly 36% of them (605 participants and guests) were people with a disability. The program of the XI Paralympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi included five Paralympic winter sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, wheelchair curling and ice sledge hockey. Snowboard made its Paralympic Winter Games debut in Sochi as a discipline under IPC Alpine Skiing, with two sets of medals (including male and female categories). At the Winter Paralympics in Sochi, the Russian athletes set a new record in the (unofficial) final medal count, by 30 gold medals won in a total of 80 Russian Team’s medals. The desire to meet in Sochi tens of thousands of concurrent visitors with disabilities prompted a mega-project dedicated to the barrier-free environment. Its provisions were designed for the Paralympic participants and guests - athletes, coaches and judges, as well as for spectators who came to the Games from all over Russia and other countries. Therefore, it was important to refurbish the vast urban areas of Sochi, from the airport and train stations, down to hotel rooms and restaurants, in order to ensure better accessibility and comfort for people with different disabilities. Most of the project provisions have been implemented before the Games. Nowadays, Sochi is the most convenient city for people with disabilities. Over 1,420 public facilities (hospitals, schools, cultural institutions) were upgraded to the standards of accessibility. Pedestrian crossings were rearranged with consideration of special needs of people with limited mobility. Information boards and signage in braille, tactile tiles, audible street signals and many other devices enable people who are blind or visually impaired to enjoy accessibility and feel safe in Sochi. 5 SOCHI AS A DESTINATION AND REGIONAL The Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games encouraged the resort's long-term development as a modern sports, tourism and cultural destination. The Games set high standards for attracting and hosting mega events, which, in their turn, are bound to highlight the Sochi image. Perception of the city is fostered by communications, and by its recognition as one of the top destinations for publicly significant spectacular mass events, that become important milestones for the resort city. The conspicuous infrastructure of the city provides essential opportunities for event tourism and for further shift of the market of corporate, sports and entertainment events to Sochi. The sector of mega events in Sochi is expected to grow to the level of health recreation and wellness tourism in the economy of this resort city. The municipal administration has set an objective to maintain the image of Sochi as a popular all-season resort of the world top class. After the Sochi 2014 Olympics, some framework was needed to coordinate events, scheduled in Sochi for 2014. For convenience of Sochi visitors, event planners and hotels, Sochi municipal administration, in collaboration with the Russian Federation Government, compiled a Calendar of major international, national and regional events scheduled in Sochi for 2014. The Sochi 2014 Calendar of Major Events was published online on the official websites of Sochi administration, Krasnodar krai, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Crimea and other regions of the country, as well as on the websites of hotels, relevant Federal agencies and travel agencies. Initially, the Calendar featured less than twenty international and national events. However, 6 FOR INTERNATIONAL, NATIONAL EVENTS thanks to the active promotion of the city, over 120 international, national and regional sporting, academic, technical and entertainment events were staged in 2014, with a total of 1.1 million participants, guests and visitors. In the late 2014, the Sochi 2014 Calendar of Major Events was recognized by residents and tourists as an efficient and relevant tool. It pictures quite a range of diverse events: international and regional, entertainment and sports, corporate and public events, all staged in Sochi. At some point, the Calendar incorporated noval events that were held for the first time in Sochi in 2014, but are likely to become annual. Big City Lights has no analogues in the world. It is an amazing love story that combines the best of skating, musicals and world drama into the show staged by Director Ilya Averbukh. Ilya Averbukh was inspired by the famous Charlie Chaplin’s movie after which the project is called Big City Lights. However, the ice musical is an independent work of performing arts with its own original plot and script. The plot covers a series of interconnected stories, exciting and capturing attention from the very first minutes, yet reflecting clear and simple messages. The musical highlights a rich spectrum of human relationships, feelings and experiences that intervene into a big picture of a modern city, with its surprising encounters, events and people. This is a touching story about meetings and parting, about love and affection, jealousy and hatred, sincere friendship and betrayal ... Original music for the play was written by Roman Ignatyev, a composer famous by his work for musicals: The Count of Monte Cristo, and Count Orlov. For the first time in the history of domestic ice shows, singing is performed live by soloists of well-known musicals. Moreover, this is one of the most expensive and grandiose projects, with its beautiful stage scenery, multilevel stage platforms, and unique group of actors. The musical at the Iceberg Ice Palace involved over sixty actors skating on ice. Among them are such star ice skaters as: Marat Basharov, Alexey Jagudin, Tatiana Totmianina, Maxim Marinin, Roman Kostomarov and many others. The Big City Lights show successfully toured Switzerland, the UK, China, Lithuania, always to a full house, to applause from thousands of enthusiastic spectators. For three days they were contesting on Sochi ice for 4 sets of medals in single and pair skating, and in ice dancing. New programs were shown by Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov - the two-time Olympic champions in pairs, Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov – the Olympic champions in the team event, the Olympic silver medalists in pairs skating, Yūko Kawaguchi and Alexander Smirnov – the World medalists, Adelina Sotnikova – the gold Olympic champion in ladies singles, and many other athletes. « It was consistent from the very start of planning, that the entire Olympic Park was designed with consideration of the surrounding infrastructure for large-scale events. This is a nice legacy of the Olympic Games, for occupancy rate of hotels in Sochi, for facilities, generally for what we call real life of Post-Olympic Sochi. » Vladimir Putin President of the Russian Federation I would like to note, that the Post-Olympic inbound tourist flow in Sochi has substantially - by 42% - exceeded the Pre-Games Summer flow. Sochi was visited by more than 2 million tourists in summer alone. » Dmitry Kozak Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation This is what we call the Post-Olympic effect. In my opinion, Greater Sochi may be a self-sufficient point of growth in the economy of our territory. Today it is a world-class, year-round resort which hosts the largest Russian and international events and competitions. Thanks to this clever use of Post-Olympic legacy, the annual revenues in all public budgets, by our estimations, will total 15 billion rubles. Alexander Tkachev Krasnodar krai Governor Sochi has always been very special in Russia. The resort features wonderful nature and health recreation resources, which are not available even in the famous Karlovy Vary. The health resort city’s infrastructure and transport used to be its weaknesses. Thanks to the Sochi Olympic Construction program, new hotels have been built, facilities have been upgraded. By creating the fantastic infrastructure, we reached out for and went above the world standards. Vladimir Medinsky Minister of Culture in the Russian Federation Thank you Sochi, thank you Russia! Athletes – you have inspired us over these days. You have excelled in competitions and shared your emotions with us and the whole world. You have celebrated victory and defeat with dignity! » » » Thomas Bach President of the International Olympic Committee 45 The Sochi 2015 Calendar national and JANUARY FEBRUARY Christmas Fun-Fair in the Gorky Gorod resort December 15 – January 31 VERSHINA FOR DED MOROZ (Father Frost s Peak) December 13 – January 18 PARALLELS, I-st International Festival December 25 – January 11 Krasnodar krai Open Racing Championship in MITJET Series Russia (1 stage, Unified Calendar Plan) and Winter Cup of Sochi Autodrome in TIME ATTACK Series (1 stage) January 3-4 MAMA, a New Year ice show by I.
