Instructions To Runners 2013 EXPO ha s MOVED! Last Chance Registration is at the EXPO which has moved to Convention Hall Saturday, June 1, 2013, 9:45 a.m. 5 Empire State Plaza, Albany, NY Albany! www.freihofersrun.com Welcome to the 35th edition of the Freihofer’s Run for Women! You are part of one of the finest women’s road races in the world. SAFETY FIRST In response to last month’s tragic events in Boston, the Albany Police Department (APD), in conjunction with various local, state, and federal agencies, announces the following new security measures will be in place Saturday, June 1st for the 35th anniversary Freihofer’s Run for Women (FRW): For Participants 4 Backpacks/coolers/duffel bags will not be permitted at the race venue. 4 Anything brought on-site, including runners’ items for FRW bag-check, must be transported in a clear plastic bag for easy inspection. 4 No animals, dogs or domestic pets (with the exception of service dogs) will be allowed on-site due to the presence of police dog patrols. 4 Photo identification is required. 4 To avoid delays, it is recommended that people leave up to 30 minutes earlier to get down to the event site. “The safety of race participants, spectators, volunteers and residents remains our top priority,” said Albany Police Chief Steve Krokoff. Toward that end, the APD is asking race participants, spectators and residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call the event’s tips line at (518) 300-0570. We appreciate everyone understanding and helping to make this a safe and enjoyable event. For 2013 we are expecting 5,000 participants in the Freihofer’s 5K event, an event record. For the safety of all runners and spectators alike, we ask that you line up at your anticipated finishing time section. Please be courteous CapitalCare/CDPHP Health & Fitness Expo Friday & Saturday, May 31 & June 1, 2013 5 Convention Hall to fellow runners at the start and do not wear headphones while you run. No baby joggers or roller blades will be allowed in the event. If you want your children to participate, enter them in the Freihofer’s Kids’ Run, it’s free for boys and girls 3-13. The Freihofer’s Jr. 3K Run will take place immediately following the women’s 5K, at 11:15 a.m. on Madison Ave. The Freihofer’s Jr. 3K is for boys and girls ages 9-13. It is recommended that 3K participants have had proper training. Parents will be allowed to accompany their child in the 3K event. RUNNING NUMBERS Pin your number to the FRONT of the outermost article of clothing you will be wearing during the run. DO NOT CUT, FOLD OR MARK YOUR NUMBER IN ANY WAY! Doing so may subject you to disqualification. BAGGAGE CHECK AREA You may check your baggage at our baggage check on the Expo. DO NOT leave valuables in your bags! Bag check-in is a courtesy to the runners only! All items for bag check must be in a clear plastic bag. We will have tags and extra bags available. Neither the race sponsor, nor the baggage volunteers, nor any other entity associated with the race, is responsible for lost, misplaced or stolen valuables. Runners please be advised that the bag check area will be open Saturday, at 7 a.m. and closes at 11:30 a.m. After that time, your bags will no longer be attended. WATER / RESTROOMS JOAN BENOIT SAMUELSON Water fountains and restrooms are located on both the Concourse and Plaza levels. In addition, there will be portable toilets adjacent to agency Building 1 on the Plaza Level. NOTE: Do to added security measures portable toilets formerly located at the start line west of the NYS Museum building have been moved to the Plaza level around Agency Building 1. RACE DAY ENTERTAINMENT Last chance registration: Friday, May 31: Noon – 7:00 p.m. CapitalCare/CDPHP Health & Fitness Expo: Friday, May 31: Noon – 7:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Joan Benoit Samuelson will sign autographs on Friday from 6-6:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for you and your family to meet this world class athlete. There will be some great bands playing along the FRW 5K course this year, including, Band of Gold and Acoustic Trauma. Also, Andy “The Music Man” Morse will bring an exciting mix of interactive rock and roll family music to the Plaza Saturday morning for Kids’ Race Registration. Kids and kids at heart are welcome! Then join Funk Evolution for a high energy post race celebration. RACE START Runners should assemble 30 MINUTES BEFORE THE 9:45 a.m. STARTING TIME on Madison Avenue. The opening ceremony will begin at 9:35 a.m. There will be a color coded start based on your anticipated finishing time. On race day, line up in the start section that matches your bib color at the time indicated. You can begin filling your section as soon as the first section is called. THE COURSE The Albany Police Department, Division of Traffic Safety, will close the course to vehicular traffic. Study the course map prior to the race. The course is clearly marked and marshaled. Mile markers are located at each mile, kilometer markers are located at each kilometer. MEDICAL The Albany Fire Department will provide the EMS Services at the finish of this year’s Walk, 3K, 5K and Kids’ Run. Additionally, Albany Fire Paramedic mobile units will be stationed around the courses. WATER STATIONS There will be two water stations on the Freihofer’s Run Course. The first will be located just past the mile point at the Washington Park Lakehouse. The second will be just east of Sprague Place at the two-mile point. There will be water available at the start and finish area and in the participant refreshment area on the Plaza Level. All water provided by Price Chopper. Additionally, Propel will be providing Propel Fitness water at participant refreshment area. THE FINISH A time clock at the finish will give you an approximation of your finish time. THIS IS NOT YOUR OFFICIAL TIME. Unofficial results will be posted at the Expo in the Convention Hall near bib & chip pick-up and on the Plaza Level beside the Outdoor Stage. TIME/SCORING To be recorded and timed in the Freihofer’s Run For Women, you must have a bib secured to front of your shirt. REFRESHMENTS Post-race refreshments are provided by Price Chopper and will be available to runners only. Your complimentary box of Freihofer’s chocolate chip cookies will be given out in the Convention Hall during expo hours. Your bib is required. NOTE: As the forecast is to be 90o on race morning, consider picking up your box of cookies and loaf of whole wheat bread in air-conditioned Expo after you run. Refreshments will be located on the marble adjacent to the outdoor stage, Plaza Level, Agency Building side. RESULTS Again for this year there is a finish certificate that you can print at no cost as a souvenir of your performance at the Freihofer’s Run for Women. CONFIRMATION REGISTRATION The Freihofer’s Run for Women 5K course is fast, exciting and a feast for the eyes. You’ll run or walk in the shadows of the majestic Empire State Plaza, amid the tulips in Washington Park and through neighborhoods restored to their 19th century charm. The 5Km course starts and finishes on Madison Ave. at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, NY. Start, finish and highest points are 160’, 150’, and 220’ respectively. 5K Course Description Freihofer’s Run for Women has been awarded the prestigious “Silver Label” designation by the IAAF for its exemplary organization and its ability to attract elite international athletes and garner worldwide media attention. The Freihofer’s 5K is the only road race in the world to have earned a Silver Road Race designation. Home of the Masters 5K World Record Bib Colors DRUG TESTING Athletes who participate in the 5 k may be subject to drug testing in accordance with IAAF Procedural Guidelines for Doping Control and the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code. Info on drug testing can be obtained on USADA web site: usantidoping.org. AWARDS All award winners, individuals or teams, must report to the awards stage by 10:50 am. Everyone is invited to attend the 5k AWARDS CEREMONY at 11:00 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the Outdoor Stage on the Plaza Level. Age group award winners can pick up their award on the awards stage immediately following the awards ceremony. 5K Running Course Line Up Time PARKING To alleviate parking issues we will be providing a shuttle from the large OGS lot at Grand street up to Madison and Eagle and State Street at the Egg for those needing to go to the Expo to pick up their bib and chip. The shuttle will run every 15min from 7am-10am. The East Garage will be available for event parking free of charge.
