WELCOME
W E L C O M E F RO M M S M P R I N C I PA L
to the summit
Whether you are newly graduated or
an alumni of many years ago, you must
admit, The Mount had an impact on
your life in one way or another. Whether
you were taught by the Sisters or taught
by mostly lay teachers, once again you
must admit, your experiences within
these sacred walls were ones never to be
forgotten.
These sacred walls. How can one
possibly describe the strength of these
brick walls? If you think of the Sisters and
the perseverance of these remarkable
women and the many sacrifices they
made for us students, well, there you
have it! This monument of a building is a
replica of the strength and endurance of
our founders, but the time has come to
enhance our beautiful structure.
Although our 110-year-old cafeteria
has endured many repairs, it has
hosted thousands of alumni! We
have arrived at a point on this great
City on a Hill where we need to go
even higher - to "Higher Ground."
We must continue to advance
Mount St. Mary Catholic High
School to where it was meant to go
- to the summit.
dollar goal! Now we are calling on
everyone to unite in full force and
make your gift to finish Phase I of our
overall Master Plan, which includes a
total of four phases. Within the next
10 years, it is our expectation to add a
new gymnasium complex, a performing
and visual arts center with additional
classrooms, a new football field house/
safe room, concession areas, and
much-needed locker rooms that will
complement our recently completed
outdoor athletic renovation. So, as you
can see, we continue to look forward,
and we need your help in reaching this
vision.
Our institution is at a height that we
have never experienced. Oklahoma
City has its eyes on our steeple with
the expectation of continued growth
and expansion. Our academics are
challenging at the highest levels, and
our students' faith formation guides
them to a sense of belonging and
purpose. Mount St. Mary Catholic
High School has never drifted from its
mission of welcoming all people from
all walks of life. Now it is our time to
take this beloved school to "Higher
Ground" and faithfully continue to
honor our past, provide for our present,
and plan for the future.
Our current Higher Ground Capital
Campaign is focused on funding a new
cafeteria/kitchen/commons area. We
have completed 80% of our 4.4 million

Mount St. Mary is happy to have added a dance class to its curriculum
in the 2014-2015 school year! In the Introduction to Dance class offered,
students learn history, vocabulary, and choreography for jazz, ballet,
and modern dance. This class sets the foundation for further study in
dance. Throughout the course, students learn to evaluate themselves
in a positive and constructive way, develop team work skills, and most
importantly have fun while learning about dance as an art form! Dance
is a great way to build confidence that carries from the classroom to
everyday life. The skills and
determination acquired
from dance truly benefit
students not only in their
artistic career but also in
their outside responsibilities
and relationships. Mount St.
Mary is excited to offer a new
dance program with more
dance classes, as well as a
performance group.
EVENTS
A Birthday
Procession Fit
for a Queen
A grand celebration took place as
Mount St. Mary celebrated 111 years on
December 12, 2014! This celebration
included the first ever birthday
procession for Mount St. Mary. The
Sisters of Mercy laid the cornerstone of
Mount St. Mary on December 12, 1903.
The school was founded to embrace
the values of the Sisters of Mercy. The
Mount’s continued identity with the
Sisters puts emphasis on service and
action to this very day.
“What a great thing for us, our families,
community, and for our world,” said
Talita DeNegri, school principal. “So
many of our alums have spread the word
of mercy, compassion, and justice, and
The Mount continues to have an impact
on all of society. We have been greatly
blessed, and we need to give thanks and
provide our students with an opportunity
to give thanks to God,” DeNegri added.
The celebration started as the students,
staff, and faculty gathered around Our
Lady of Mercy Chapel. Father De Loera
removed the Blessed Sacrament. He
then led the entire school in a procession
around the exterior of the campus,
reciting Hail Marys from the main
entrance to SW 28th Street. From there
the entire school sang the school servant
song, “And the People Said Amen.” The
congregation of students, faculty, and
staff then knelt in the street as Father
blessed the west side of campus. The
procession continued its journey, singing
“Make Me a Sanctuary.” They made their
way to the circle drive where the group
was introduced to a traditional Mexican
dance. Father then blessed the front of
the campus while everyone knelt. Once
the Blessed Sacrament was placed in
the sacristy, Principal DeNegri said a few
words; then everyone sang the birthday
song to Mount St. Mary.
The procession was a great way to
express the love of God and give
admiration to our wonderful school!

ATHL ETI C RENOVATIO N S INS PIRED BY JO E RIS CHARD’S GIF T
Mount St. Mary recently completed
a 1.3 million dollar renovation of
its outdoor athletic facilities. The
Mount’s football, soccer, baseball,
and softball programs will be the
beneficiaries of the project that
has improved the landscape of the
north side of the campus.
The catalyst for this initiative was Mount
benefactor and alum, Joe Rischard.
Rischard is a member the MSM Class of
1954, and the baseball/softball field was
named after him in 2009. For the last 10
years, the baseball and softball teams
shared the same field. In early July
through October, Rischard was making
donations of sod, labor, and materials
to convert the baseball sod infield into
a softball dirt playing surface. At the
same time, he was also building a special
friendship with MSM softball coach,
the late Daryl Reynolds. “Coach was a
great friend, and I wanted to help fix a
4
problem for him and the school. I didn’t
want to have to worry anymore about
switching the field over before and after
each season. The best solution was to
put down artificial turf that both teams
could use. I was glad to provide the
school with this donation because I have
been fortunate in my life, and I wanted
the kids to have a field they could take
great pride in,” said Rischard.
As the turf infield was being installed,
school leadership put together a
comprehensive renovation plan to take
advantage of the momentum created
by the Rischard gift. MSM Director of
Advancement, Chris Stiles, reached out
to various alumni, Mount parents, current
and past board members, and school
benefactors to ask for their support.
MSM senior football and baseball player
Matt Peace shared, “This makes us feel
like people believe in us, knowing we
have support from the The Mount family.
It gives us confidence to go out and
perform to the best of our abilities.”
The Mount partnered with Architectural
Design Group (ADG) and Nabholz
Construction Corporation on the design
and construction management phase
of the project. Curt Hellen, MSM Class
of 1993 and Senior Project Manager for
Nabholz, led the effort. “I felt a personal
stake in the project. Being an alum, I was
blessed to come back to a place where
I spent so many great years of my life.
The goal of the venture was to exceed

changes the landscape of the campus
and is a landmark game changer for The
Mount,” said Hellen.
The true beneficiaries of the
transformation in the athletic facilities are
the student athletes themselves. What is
in the best interest for Mount students
is always at the heart of every project
undertaken and every decision made at
this school. MSM Director of Athletics,
John Keilty emphatically added, “Our
goal is to provide the best high school
experience possible for our kids. We
ask kids to give us total commitment to
giving their best effort as a Rocket. This
renovation shows our school community’s
commitment to them by providing
athletic facilities that inspire their sense
of pride while enhancing the quality
of the high school experience for our
student athletes of today and tomorrow.”

ost-secondary planning is a large component
of the counseling office and is extremely
important to address with every student
of Mount St. Mary Catholic High School.
With graduation day for the Class of 2015
approaching, it has been a true joy to watch
the senior class explore the world that is ahead of them.
“With the thousands of post-secondary options
available, MSM seniors have worked diligently
in recent months to research and find the
colleges that complement their desired career
choice as well as meet all of the aspects of what
they are looking for in a school.”
With the thousands of post-secondary options available,
they have worked diligently in recent months to research
and select the colleges that complement their desired
career choice. As we met with the students one-on-one
and in the classroom, we discussed the characteristics
of colleges: big vs. small, private vs. public, liberal arts
school, class size, extracurricular involvement, distance
from home, degree options and a variety of other
crucial components. As the students began to apply
for colleges and maneuvered their way through the
application process, their excitement and eagerness
began to shine.
As a result of their hard work, individual seniors
have been accepted to prestigious colleges and
universities from all over the country. The talents
and accomplishments of the Class of 2015 can be
seen in the list to the right; it represents the schools
they have been admitted to as of the beginning
of the Spring 2015 semester. We are so proud of
their hard work. We look forward to the many other
acceptance letters that they will be receiving in the
upcoming months.

The Class of 2014 set the bar high with 100 percent choosing a postsecondary program to continue their educational endeavors. Seventy
four percent of the Class of 2014 chose an in-state school, with
twenty two percent going out of state, two percent chose a technical
program and one percent chose the religious or military path. This
class also out performed state (20.7) and national (20.9) averages on
the ACT test with an overall composite of 22.9, quite a feat with one
100% of students taking the test. This class also set the bar high as it
was offered over six million dollars in scholarships! Outstanding!
The Class of 2015 is working hard to live up to the expectations
set by their predecessors. While these current seniors finish their
final semester at The Mount, 93% have experienced the rigor of
AP (advanced placement), Pre AP or Honors classes. We anxiously
anticipate final tallies for admissions and scholarships for this group.
Good luck, Class of 2015!

The spring of 2015 finds the Class of 2016 preparing hard for the
ACT test. To assist students in their preparation, Mount St. Mary
Catholic High School has committed to offering an ACT prep course
to juniors. Under the guidance and direction of MSM teachers,
juniors will receive 15 hours of prep covering the subjects of English/
Reading, and Math and Science Reasoning.
A vital part of the college prep process is discerning an individual’s
vocation. With the help of the Advancement Office, we are working to
compile a database of potential careers for Mount students to shadow.
Students will have the opportunity to experience a “day in the life” of a
chosen career. This experience will provide students the opportunity to
talk to professionals and gain a more in-depth insight of what the career
entails. More information will be disseminated as the program evolves.
If you are a professional interested in sharing your talents with our
students, please contact Donna Carlson in the counseling office.
All of these opportunities have been made possible for our students
through the collaborative effort of the MSM community. We hope to
continue a tradition of excellence to open new opportunities for all
Mount St. Mary High Catholic School students.

LT. JACK KEILTY
ROCKET ALUM EARNS HIS
WINGS
A “burning” desire to serve the United States of America is the key component which
drives Lt. Jack Keilty U.S. Navy. Jack, a 2005 graduate of Mount St. Mary, recently
completed Navy Strike/Fighter jet training in the F/A -18 Hornet in San Diego, CA.
Jack is living out his journey that started many years ago. In first grade Jack was
introduced to his first flight suit sent to him by his uncle, Navy Pilot Kevin Keilty.
He wore that suit every day, and it was then Keilty recognized what path he wanted
to take for his future.
Since graduating from college, Jack has been in flight training. The training was
rigorous. He received his Naval Aviator “Wings of Gold” in 2012 in Meridian,
Mississippi. Part of Lt. Keilty’s training was landing an F/A-18 Hornet on an Aircraft
Carrier at night. When asked by his parents, Kim and John Keilty, “What was going
through your mind when you completed the task?” Jack replied, “It was the hardest but
most rewarding thing I have ever done in my life.”
On Friday, September 12, 2014, after four years of pilot training, Keilty became a fully
qualified United States Navy Fighter Pilot. "God has blessed Jack with the tools to be a
Navy Pilot, and the United States has the best training in the world. He is doing what
he loves, and he is doing what he is called to do,” said his father.
Jack attended The Mount all four years and played football and baseball. He was
selected as Junior Rotarian of the Year for the Downtown Rotary Club. After high
school Jack attended Northeastern Oklahoma A & M College in Miami and Rose State
College before enrolling in a four year NROTC Scholarship Program at the Virginia
Military Institute. While at the Virginia Military Institute, Jack lettered in football in his
sophomore year and was selected Navy Midshipmen of the Year at commissioning.
Jack looks back on his Rocket years and remembers the friendships
that helped him as he pursued his dream to fly. Football coach Joe
Weber and Biology teacher Randy Cook particularly took an interest
in Jack and inspired and motivated him. Jack said, “Coach Weber
taught me how to be tough, how to work hard, and how to deal with
adversity. Coach Cook taught me to always be fair and treat others
with respect and dignity.”
Jack has reported to his first operational squadron in Virginia Beach as a Strike Fighter
Pilot. He will deploy onboard the USS Harry Truman in November 2015.
Mount St. Mary Catholic High School is very proud of Lt. Jack Keilty and thanks him
for his service to our nation. Godspeed, Lt. Keilty!
InvestEd
Success
Mount St. Mary freshman, Alex Bohn,
claimed the title of 2014 Invest Ed
State Winner in the Oklahoma STARS
program. Alex was the state winner for
his program report “Students Tracking
and Researching the Stock Market.”
STARS is sponsored by the Oklahoma
Employment Securities Commission.
STARS is a financial and education
program for high school students in
grades nine through twelve.
Francois Boda teaches personal finance
at The Mount, and implemented the
STARS program as part of his personal
finance curriculum in 2008. Mr. Boda
has had six regional winners and two
state winners in the STARS program
during his time at The Mount.
“The STARS program is a great way
for the students to apply what they are
learning in class,” said Mr. Boda.
Student STARS participants research
stocks, decide which stocks to buy,
and complete a risk assessment.
Students set investment goals, create
an online portfolio, and track results.
At the end of the tracking period,
students prepare a report detailing
their investment process, and explain
what they learned. Winners are
selected based on their reports rather
than ending values of their portfolios.
Alex received a $1,000 scholarship for
winning the Invest Ed competition.
Alex plans on majoring in Engineering
in college upon graduation from
Mount St. Mary in 2018.

Rocket Social Studies
Teacher Travels to Russia
For MSM Social Studies teacher John
Baldridge, teaching is about more than
what his students can learn from a text
book; it’s about bringing the world to his
classroom.
Mr. Baldridge was selected for the U.S.
State Department of State Program for
teachers. He was one of seven teachers
from the United States chosen to
participate in the traveling program in
January of 2015.
The Russian/American Educators
Exchange is a program of American
Friends of Russian Folklore, funded
through the U.S. Department of State’s
Peer-to-Peer Dialogue program between
the United States and Russia. The
purpose of the program is two-fold: (1)
to allow American and Russian educators
to share their respective cultural
traditions with one another, and (2) to
build relationships between the U.S. and
Russia on the individual, personal level,
thereby finding out that we have more
in common than our governments would
lead us to believe.
The American teachers toured each
school, visited with the Russian teachers,

“The schools were incredibly hospitable,

performed by the students. The students
and teachers at these schools had never
met Americans before in their lives and
had been preparing diligently for our visit
months in advance. These school visits
were the highlight of the trip,” said Mr.
Baldridge.
On his trip, Mr. Baldridge visited three
schools in Russia. They varied from a tiny
village school in Pavlovo with only 12
students to a college preparatory school
in the large city of Smolensk, specializing
in foreign languages, with over 600
students.
Mr. Baldridge accredits his interest
in the exchange program to wanting
to improve his curriculum in his own
classroom.

“I have been deeply touched by the
kindness of the Russian people. As
an American, I possessed certain
preconceived ideas and stereotypes of
Russians. Yet I visited their country with
an open mind. Going on this journey was
the biggest adventure of my life. Russia
is the only country that has turned my
worldview entirely upside down, and I
am so glad I took the leap of faith. I can’t
wait to bring my new experiences into
my classroom!” said Mr. Baldridge.

Entrepreneurial
Alum Finds Success
Outside of the Box
TO N Y A R A N G O : M S M C L A S S O F 1 9 8 8
Most would say that the path for success in a
career is a traditional one. Do as well as you
can in high school and go straight to college.
Likewise, to be a high achiever, one has to attain
a college degree and go to work. For Mount
alum, Tony Arango, his choice not to follow the
traditional path after high school led him on a
journey to success. The relationships he built, the
decisions he made, and the convictions he found
have made Tony Arango an entrepreneur whose
story can serve as an inspiration to The Mount.
Arango, preceded by his mother and followed by his sister,
appreciated his Mount St. Mary education. His greatest
memory is of a relationship he built with Mount icon, Pete
Córdova. “Mr. Córdova was always involved in my life. He
was my Cub Scout troop leader, and he always kept me in
line. He had a keen understanding of boys. He knew we were
ornery and would do mischievous things, but he never held
that against us. I had great admiration for him,” said Arango.
Throughout the years, Arango continued to treasure the close
friendships of his classmates as well. “Family ties to the school
and relationships never change. We can go years without
seeing each other, but if a classmate were in trouble, there
would be 10 of us ready to help out,” added Arango.
After graduating from The Mount, Arango attended
Oklahoma City Community College as an accounting
major. After his first year at OCCC, his commitment to
his chosen study began to waver. It took a fishing trip
with his stepfather to Mississippi for him to find his true
passion. “I was going down to Mississippi for a short stay.
I had intentions of coming right back to OKC, but it was
five years before I came home,” said Arango. He began an
apprenticeship for an air conditioning program and ended
up working in that program for five years.
he was in pursuit of more. At the age of 28, he quit his
job to pursue a mechanical engineering degree from OU.
His prior apprenticeship and job experience abetted him
in earning his engineering degree in just over three and a
half years. “My previous job experience helped me see the
problems in my head,” said Arango.
Arango is now the new systems sales engineer for Trane, a
global heating and air conditioning provider that specializes
in both commercial and residential work. In addition
to his career with Trane, Arango has built an impressive
portfolio. He owns a real estate investment company
that holds commercial, multi-family, and residential real
estate in Midtown, north Oklahoma City, and Edmond.
Also, he is part owner of Hillbillies Po Boy & Oyster Bar,
which is located in Automobile Alley. There are plans for
another restaurant opening in OKC. He also serves as
Vice President of the Foundation Board at OCCC and
is a member of the American Society of Heating and Air
Conditioning Engineers.
Arango is passionate that we should teach today’s students
about becoming entrepreneurs. He believes we can become
a society that creates jobs, not just fills them. Arango shared,
“Young people need to specialize in something. College is
not always the way to go. It is important to master a skill
set. Financial education can lead to financial freedom. Kids
must be challenged to think outside the box and develop
a business plan. Being entrepreneurial is the way to create
opportunities for yourself and others.”
Like so many true innovators, Tony Arango forged his path
to success. The entrepreneurial spirit of creativity germinated
by Pete Córdova and Mount St. Mary continues to inspire
generations to come.
When Arango returned to OKC, he established himself as
a specialist in the air conditioning industry. He had a great
job that he loved and a six figure income to match, but

come to address growing spacing problems as
enrollment climbs and larger common spaces
are desperately needed.
Since 1903, Mount St. Mary Catholic High
School has guided the aspirations of future
leaders through faith, wisdom, and service.
In order to accomplish this expansion, we have
embarked upon an aggressive, yet attainable,
capital campaign appropriately named Higher
Ground. The success of the campaign and the
resulting facilities expansion will require all our
families and friends to prayerfully consider what
each can do to open the door to a complete
infrastructure mirroring our first-class education.
Expansion of five areas will enhance the
preeminent spaces we currently utilize by
overhauling the commons hall, cafeteria,
kitchen, east patio, and west patio.
Higher Ground is a $4.4 million opportunity
to invest in an initiative both historic and
transformative in scope positioning our school
for growth, expansion, and preeminence as we
look to the future.
An investment in The Mount’s expansion yields
an investment in a generation. We invite you
to seize the opportunity to shake the hearts and
minds of this generation’s students who will go
on to shape the future of our community and
our world.

WEST ENTRANCE
With each student we equip with this moral
code, we are empowering a generation. We are
improving the world around us. In turn, we
honor the enduring legacy of those who first
laid the cornerstone of our beloved institution.
Inspiring bold thinking begins with a solid
foundation. That original cornerstone continues
to provide our students with an excellent faithbased, college-preparatory education. Just as our
students experience growth both personally and
intellectually during their time within our walls,
our school is emboldened to undergo a period
of growth and improvement.

THE FUTURE
Currently, our cafeteria serves approximately
250 students per day. Even though there are
two lunch periods, the students still wait in
a long line. Our cafeteria has room for only

Additionally, there is seating for only 80 people.
The new cafeteria and commons area will
provide seating for 300 students, two serving
lines, a dedicated salad bar, two cashiers, and
additional access for ease of traffic flow.

Selected as Delegate
JOHN TEAGUE NAMED TO 53RD ANNUAL
U.S. SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM
Mount St. Mary’s very own John
Teague has been named state
delegate to the prestigious
53rd annual U.S. Senate Youth
Program (USSYP). Teague, a
National Merit Commended
Scholar, will join 102 other
delegates from around the
country for an exclusive week
this spring in Washington, D.C.
The delegates are outstanding
high school students who are
interested in pursuing careers in
public service.
The delegates will travel to the nation’s
capital for a week-long look at how
the government functions. Teague
will have the opportunity to meet with
prominent officials from every branch of
government and related fields, including
members of Congress, the President, a
Supreme Court justice, an ambassador,
and members of the media. He will
also have the opportunity to meet with
the delegates from the other 49 states,
visit with Oklahoma’s Congressional
delegation, and see our national
government in action.
16
Teague is the first student in Mount
St. Mary history to receive this honor.
Notable alumni of the program include
two current U.S. Senators, Governor
Chris Christie, Karl Rove, Mack
McLarty, Ambassador Richard Burt, and
Oklahoma’s own Robert Henry. “I cannot
imagine a better student than John
Teague to represent our school and the
state of Oklahoma in our nation’s capital,”
said John Baldridge, AP US History
Instructor for Mount St. Mary. “Teague
is an exceptional student; not only does
he consistently earn high grades, but
he also displays remarkable intellect,
diligence, and confidence both in and
out of the classroom,” Baldridge added.
The Oklahoma State Department of
Education nominated Teague after
going through an application process
that adhered to the high standards set
by the USSYP. The process began in
October when Teague took a test. In
November, the 10 individuals who
scored the highest on the test were
interviewed. John was notified in
December he was one of the two
chosen delegates. “I was overly excited
when they told me I was selected,”
Teague said. Baldridge said, "This
opportunity will help give him the
stepping stones to where this goaloriented young man sees himself in the
future." Teague said, “Mr. Baldridge
had a big impact on the application
process.” He also added the Social
Studies Department which also includes
Mr. Jeff Johnson and Mr. David

educational success.
“My parents have always inspired both
me and my brother Luke,” said Teague.
Even though his parents, David Teague
and Helen Gaudin, come from science
backgrounds, politics is in their family
line. He has two uncles in the Arkansas
JOHN TEAGUE, '15 MSM
State Senate. “We talk about politics
and world events quite frequently in our
home,” John added. That is where the
interest began.
“Mount St. Mary has enriched me in so
many ways. Mrs. DeNegri has been
so supportive and Coach Keilty has
encouraged me all the way,” Teague
stated. He is currently vice president
of the National Honor Society, active
in Youth Leadership Oklahoma and
has been a page for the Oklahoma
State Senate. Teague will also receive
a $5,000 undergraduate college
scholarship from the William Randolph
Hearst Foundation which sponsors the
U.S. Senate Youth Program.
John has chosen to attend William &
Mary College in Williamsburg, VA. His
studies will be in Government and Public
Policy. “When I visited William & Mary, I
knew it was the place I wanted to be. I
was drawn to it, the school reminded
me of The Mount. The small campus,
building architecture and the fact that
three of our United State Presidents
are alumni there including one of my
favorites, Thomas Jefferson, is pretty
cool,” stated John.

Campus Life
Leigha Pierce, MSM Class of 2010, has a talent…and it’s not just being able to
draw or paint. She is a person who likes a challenge and to be involved. As a
senior art education major at OSU finishing up her student teaching this spring,
she has been very instrumental in campus life at OSU the past four years.
Pierce found her niche as a legacy in the Chi Omega national women’s sorority
at Oklahoma State. She is the founder of “Symphony Sidelines,” an annual
fundraising event for OSU alumni during homecoming walkarounds. That led
to her landing the job of Head Homecoming Director for her sorority. If you
haven’t experienced an OSU homecoming, then you are missing something
special! House decorations at OSU are like no other. Thousands of people
come to Stillwater the Friday before football homecoming each fall to reconnect with classmates and view all the decorations. As homecoming director,
Pierce’s responsibilities included helping design the intricate theme for the
house’s decoration, meeting a budget and tracking the ‘pomping’ hours of the
200 members in the chapter. Homecoming Director responsibilities also entail
overseeing the numerous activities leading up to the big game on Saturday
afternoon. In addition to homecoming responsibilities, Pierce also designed
winning costumes for Spring Sing and makeup while being a cast member in
the shows.

DeNegri as a tribute to her dad, Pete.
Pierce’s senior year began with her being the Camp Cowboy Programming
Director. Camp Cowboy is a student run orientation camp for incoming
freshmen. It is a multi-day camp with sessions held throughout the summer at
a remote location. Ropes courses, various speakers, and teaching the students
the traditions of OSU are a few of the fun events she organizes during the many
hours of preparation.
She credits The Mount for giving her opportunities while
gaining confidence in herself and leadership skills. She had so
many wonderful teachers at Mount St. Mary. She was deeply
touched to know that her mentor, Señor David Narjano, past
MSM art teacher, drove to Stillwater to see her work. It was in
his class when she decided that she wanted to be an art teacher.
Her final year was highlighted when her art work was displayed in the OSU
student union in a two week showing this past November. She is also living

THE NEXT CHAPTER OF

BASKETBALL
MSM WELCOMES NEW HEAD BASKETBALL COACHES
Recently the atmosphere around Mount St.
Mary has started to transform. The launch of
a campaign to upgrade the historic school
building, athletic facility improvements, and
other external features have undergone
change. Although these new features are great
for the school, two key components have been
added to the athletic program as well. Both
Rocket basketball programs added new head
coaches this year. They are the beginning of a
new chapter in Rocket basketball history.
Kellen McCoy, the head boys basketball coach, is a
newcomer for the program. The 28 year old comes to
The Mount from Weber State University, where he was an
assistant coach and graduated as the Big Sky Player of the
Year. Along with coaching and playing at Weber State,
McCoy spent a year playing professionally overseas, and
was a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma. It
is clear he understands the steps winning programs need
to take and hopes to lead a group of young men at Mount
St. Mary in the same direction.
The Lady Rockets added Nichole Copeland as their head
coach. Copeland comes from Norman High, where she
spent the past three seasons. Before Norman High, she
was the head coach at Mustang, where she led a team to
a state championship title and multiple teams on deep
playoff runs. Copeland is a coach that has a record to
prove she knows what successful teams need to do. The
Lady Rockets have a leader with a wealth of experience,
knowledge, and passion for the game.
Nichole Copeland
Kellen McCoy
Both coaches bring impressive résumés to
The Mount. Winning records, championships,
and post-season accolades are indicators of
success, and both coaches have these to show.
Although not listed on their résumés, one thing
is also clear…both coaches have a true passion,
above all else, to impact the lives of every
student-athlete. Both programs will have the
opportunity to reap the rewards of having great
leaders. Teams will be given the opportunity to
win games. Players will be put in the position
to make memorable plays. Some players may
even have the chance to garner awards after
the season under the leadership of each coach.
Records could be broken, but some of the most
impressive statistics will never show up in the
record books. The opportunity to impact the
lives of athletes is what keeps these coaches
motivated. Wins and awards are just the byproduct.
Under new leadership, the culture and
expectations of each program may have
slightly changed, but the future is bright. It is
an exciting time for not only the basketball
program but the entire Mount community.
The campus is beginning to transform, and
improvements will continue. However, amidst all
the changes, our mission remains the same, and
these coaches will do nothing but continue to
take steps in the right direction.

FOOTBALL:
A FAMILY PASSION
There is something special about high
school football. The lives it impacts and
the emotion it evokes from all involved
is unmatched. During the season, there
is a constant buzz leading up to Friday
night. Students and faculty all seem to be
anxious to cheer from the stands. Players’
and coaches’ nerves build until opening
kickoff, and parents pray for safety.
People love high school football. It
teaches young men, brings communities
together, and creates lifelong memories.
For a family with three boys who all play
football, they may not have a choice
when it comes to being immersed in the
Friday night lights. During the season,
football is life, but the Turner family
would not have it any other way.
A move of nearly 1,000 miles is a
difficult situation for anyone, especially
a family of three young boys, within a
year of age. The Turner family packed
their comfortable lives into a trailer
and moved south from Wisconsin to
Oklahoma. At the time of the move,
Jimmy and Jack - the twins, were in junior
high. Jesse, the eldest, would begin
his freshman year of high school. The
boys loved Wisconsin. They met friends
at school and developed a passion for
Green Bay Packer football. Coming from
a school the boys loved, it was important
to parents Dave and Shana, to find the
perfect place for their sons to attend
school. From the moment they stepped
foot onto the historic Mount St. Mary
High Catholic School campus, they knew
it was the right place.
Jesse was an average freshman with
no previous experience with organized
football. Head football coach Chris Stiles
noticed Jesse and asked him to join the
team. According to Shana, "This was
a turning point for not only Jesse, but
also the entire family." Jesse joined the
team and spent the next
year learning the game,
developing friendships,
and finding his place at
The Mount. Like anything
new, it was difficult to
learn, but a passion and
purpose began to grow. He
realized his weaknesses and
worked tirelessly to improve.
His work ethic and growth
as a young man did not
go unnoticed; any student,
faculty member, or family involved with
Rocket football can attest to that. After
his junior year, he was voted "Most
Improved Player," the only individual
post-season award given on the Rocket
football team. Jesse had come a long
way from the day he had stepped onto
campus as a freshman, and he would not
be the only Turner to reap the rewards of
the program.
This unmatched work ethic did nothing
but inspire and lead the two younger
brothers, Jimmy and Jack. They
did what younger brothers do, they
followed in the same footsteps as their
older brother and joined the Mount
St. Mary football team. Fast forward
four years later, and the Turner brothers
are a household name in The Mount
community. At this point, Dave and
Shana are parents to nearly 30% of the
Rockets starting defense. During the
season, late dinners at the Turner house
are filled with conversation concerning
Friday night’s opponent. Weekends
following games consist of post-game
breakdowns and Green Bay Packer
games on television. This average
American family from Wisconsin is
now a family truly immersed in football.
However, it is much more than football;
it is a community and program they are
truly committed to.
The Turners are quick to give thanks to The Mount for all it
has provided for their family, but a family like this is what
makes The Mount such an exceptional place.
The commitment to a program does
not stop with the boys who play. Any
night throughout the week, one can find
Dave taking a break from his job as a
scientist to help line the field, work the
concession stand, or assist with the chain
crew at varsity and junior varsity games.
Seeing someone with such a demanding
schedule devote his time to a school,
makes it easy to see why the boys have
developed into solid young men. On the
other hand, mothers and fathers often
have conflicting views when it comes
to football. It is a common sight to see
mothers cringing in the stands as their
sons throw themselves into contact. On
Friday nights, you will find Shana Turner,
a protective mother, inches from the field
with a camera in hand. You can find her
filming practice from the stands on cool
October evenings. You will see her at
every team meal, helping cook, clean,
and serve meals to the players. As it has
done for her three sons, Rocket football
has developed "a new passion and sense
of purpose" for Shana, as well.
The Turners are quick to give thanks to
The Mount for all it has provided for their
family, but a family like this is what makes
The Mount such an exceptional place. For
a family moving to a new place, Rocket
football may have been a blessing, but
in return they have blessed the program.
Once again, there is something special
about high school football. Like it has
done for many, it has brought a close-knit
family even closer. The Turners are more
than a family who simply loves football.
They are a prime example of what The
Mount community is.

AT H L E T I C S
END WITH A WIN!
THE
MOUNT
REMEMBERS
COACH
DARYL
REYNOLDS
Mount St. Mary lost an incredible coach, friend, leader
and servant on January 1, 2015, Coach Daryl Reynolds.
The initial emotion when one looks out at the softball/
baseball field and thinks of Coach not being there is a
feeling of loss and sadness. Then the memories resurface
and the corners of your mouth start to lift. MSM won by
having him as part of The Mount family during the many
years he was here!
In 2004 Daryl took over as the head softball coach, and
for 10 years he built a program of character and honor. “In
2009 Daryl became assistant coach in baseball and again
demonstrated unparalleled loyalty and dedication to our
kids,” said Coach John Keilty, MSM Athletic Director.
“You see, Mr. Baseball, as he is known to many, played his
high school years here in Oklahoma City and Midwest
City. He played at Seminole, and he was the Oklahoma
City American Legion Coach for many decades. He
followed in his father’s footsteps bringing baseball to the
kids of Oklahoma. You could not go to a game with Coach
without him knowing all the coaches and umpires at the
field. He truly is a legend.” Keilty added.
Coach Reynolds impacted well over 200 softball and
baseball athletes at MSM, along with countless others
associated with the softball and baseball programs
throughout Oklahoma. “His love of the game came from
his dad. He loved the kids and Mount St. Mary,” said
Chris Martin, one of Reynolds’ assistant coaches. Martin
also added, “He coached kids to their best on the field
and off.” Coach always had a few sayings, “Don’t settle for
mediocrity,” as well as, “Do what you’re told, when you’re
told, and the way you’re told.” Another favorite saying
of Coach Reynolds was “Leave it all between the lines.”
These words resounded in the hearts and minds of the
players he fostered and loved.
On Coach Reynolds’ journey of building a great softball
program for Mount St. Mary, he attained 214 wins, 9
regional appearances, 3 state appearances, and 1 state
championship. But most importantly, he changed
students into champions.
His assistant coaches - Chris Martin, Gary Wesselhoft,
Breanna Sizemore, and Cathy Blackburn worked
alongside Coach Reynolds. “He had an incredible mind
for the sport,” Blackburn said. “Working with him was
an educational experience for the coaches, as well as the
players,” Martin added.
When asked, “What was the best memory on the field
with Daryl?” Cathy Blackburn replied, “My absolute best
memory of him on the field was winning the Regional
28
tournament in Glenpool in 2014 after going into the Regional
seeded fourth. He could not stop telling the girls how proud he
was of their performance.” Martin’s fondest memory was the 2011
semi-final game against Tecumseh, “It was a tough game and we
won 2-0 to go to the State Finals. Then, of course, there was the
championship game. He was so proud of those girls.”
His infectious smile and pride at State was a best for Bre Sizemore.
“My favorite recollection of Coach Reynolds was at our regional.
The girls played so hard. They were not only playing against some
really good teams, they were playing against the officials as well.
When the girls had won - after they fought hard and refused to give
up - Daryl had the biggest smile on his face. He was speechless for
a while. He had a tear in his eye as he told them how incredibly
proud he was of them. It was the happiest I had ever seen him!”
said Sizemore.
Blackburn also added, “Daryl loved helping kids become responsible
adults. He used baseball/softball to teach so many valuable life
lessons to his players. He truly just fell in love with the mission at
The Mount and wanted to make a difference in the future of all the
kids he coached.” “He had a talent for instilling confidence in his
players as well as his assistants,” Wesselhoft noted. Reynolds did not
take much from anyone, but he gave back something to everyone
who met him. “Daryl saw the game as a platform for so much more.
Mount St. Mary is preparing kids to be difference makers in the
world through school, athletics, and faith. He wanted the kids to be
difference makers too!” Sizemore said.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand,

Father who is in heaven.” - Matthew 5:13-16
