We look forward to celebrating with you and thank you for continuing to allow us to grow great plants for great people who love beautiful gardens! Our Story: Planting the Seed I t began as a true traditional American tale with a seed that was planted in the heart of a young, German immigrant, William A.Natorp. William embarked on a journey across the ocean in hopes of planting the seed that would grow his dream. In 1916, William planted that seed by placing an advertisement for landscape services in a Cincinnati florist window. William’s talents were quickly recognized developing a following based on his creative designs and passion for plants. There was one problem; the plants. Many of William’s clients were also immigrants that were used to the quality and selection of plant materials available in Europe that were not available in Cincinnati. In true entrepreneur spirit, William saw the void as an opportunity and made the decision that he would grow his own and created Natorp’s Nursery. As word spread of the quality of Natorp’s plants, William’s son Merten, now involved in the family business, realized there was a large community of gardeners that wanted to be invited into this dream of creating beautiful Cincinnati gardens. This realization was the catalyst for offering Natorp’s locally grown, quality plants to the local gardener. The company branched out into retail and started selling plants directly to the customer through Natorp’s Garden Stores. These stores were eventually located throughout the city. With a backyard filled with lush blossoming trees perfect for spending hours playing hide and seek, it is no surprise that childhood spent among the beauty of plant filled fields also grew a family passionate about plants that has lasted for generations. Today, the business is operated by William’s grandson Ken Natorp and his sons Kyle and Craig. With their passion for plants, the family made a risky decision a few years ago closing their traditional retail operations and creating a new model, one that did not exist in their industry and allowed the company to focus on what makes them different, the quality of their plants. When asked why Natorp’s has been in business 100 years, President of Natorp’s, Kyle Natorp explains, “I believe it’s because of the seed which was planted that as a business you grow based on opportunity but what defines and sustains you is staying true to your roots”. OurHistory 1916-1917 William A. began Natorp’s Landscape. The company was located in a three room office in Walnut Hills 1920-1922 Purchased 7.5 acres and moved to Reading Road. Started the first retail department called Garden View Nursery. 1923-1945 Purchased nursery land on Montgomery Road, Kenwood Road, Galbraith Road, Hunt Road, and 135 acres in Mason, Ohio 1948-1966 Opened garden stores on Montgomery Road, Reading Road, and Hamilton Ave and Fields Ertel Road 1980-1992 Opened garden store on Ohio Pike in Amelia Moved to current location 1993-1999 Opened Florence Store Started the Annual Fall Outlet Sale 2000-2012 Natorp’s simplified retail operations and began focusing more on growing great plants 2012 Natorp’s created a new way to shop for plants opening Natorp’s Nursery Outlet 2016 Today, the company has grown to Natorp’s Nursery, Natorp’s Nursery Outlet, Natorp’s Wholesale, & Natorp’s Landscape, Design and Installation. 1916-2016 100 Years This Spring Plants Exciting News! Growing Since 1916 Herb of the Year Peppers! H Rita Heikenfeld CCP, CMH*, journalist, herbalist, author, cooking teacher www.Abouteating.com Interesting Note: Chile, pepper or aji are all used interchangeably referring to the plants and fruits. ‘Chili’ is used for describing the dish ‘chili’ (meat and Chile peppers combined). Chili powder can contain other ingredients besides ground-up Chile peppers. Chile powder would be Chile peppers only. ow could peppers be the herb of the year, you ask?”. The true definition of an herb is any useful plant, and peppers truly fit thanks to capsaicin, which makes peppers hot. The heat of a pepper is measured in Scoville Units, ranging from 0 (Bell pepper) to over 2 million units (Carolina Reaper). Use the jalapeno pepper as a reference point: Jalapeno (mildly hot), then Hungarian wax, Serrano, Lemon Drop, Cayenne, Thai, Habanero, Ghost, Naga Viper, and Carolina Reaper (world’s hottest). With these and the many other pepper selections in between offering different levels of heat and flavors, choose wisely when cooking and eating hot peppers! Hot and spicy peppers are used in so many ways in today’s kitchens; appetizers, entrees, spicy desserts, drinks, hot sauces, mustards, pickled foods, healing creams for sore muscles, or just eaten by themselves. Along with the flavors and levels of heat and spiciness, peppers are low in calories, an excellent source of vitamins C, E, B, A, carotenoids and antioxidants, help to burn fat, reduce cholesterol, and ease inflammation. Hot peppers are also good for your tummy and digestive system; just don’t overdo it! If you ingest more heat than you’d like, bread and dairy products can help, as well as sucking on a lemon or swilling tomato juice.
