Commemorating 40
Years with a “Summer
of Celebrations”
Did you know that nearly one-third
of all Marin residents live within
walking distance of a county park
or preserve? Marin County Parks
have been your backyard for 40 years, so join us as
we host a “Summer of Celebrations” to commemorate our 40th anniversary! The festivities began on
Earth Day and the party will last through November.
Some summer highlights at Marin parks and preserves
include:
• “Walk into History” series with County Supervisors
• “Campfire” series
• Film Night in the Park at Hal Brown Park
• “Full Moon” series
• Sausalito to Stafford Lake Park Bike Ride
• Dog Day Afternoon at McInnis Park
New things to do this summer (that you couldn’t do
last summer):
• Hike and ride the new 680 Trail
• Swim at Free Pool Days for Kids at the McNears
Beach Park pool every Thursday starting June 21
through August
• Hike and ride the Manzanita Fire Road to the spiral
circle in Gary Giacomini Preserve
• Taste Marin Brewing Co.’s “Preservation Ale”

equestrians, and hikers.
How to Help a Stranded
Marine Mammal
Whether you’re observing harbor seals at the Bolinas
Lagoon Preserve, or admiring elephant seals elsewhere
along Marin’s magnificent coastline, you should know
what to do if you encounter one of these federallyprotected mammals in distress.
1.Don’t touch, pick up, or feed the animal.
2.Observe: The animal from a distance of at least 50
feet.
3.Describe: Note physical characteristics such as size,
presence of external earflaps, and fur color.
4.Condition: Note the animal’s condition. Is it weak
and underweight? Are there any open wounds?
5.Identification: Does the animal have any obvious
identification tags or markings?
6.Location: Determine the exact location of the
animal, in order to provide accurate directions.

7.Call: The Marine Mammal Center at (415) 289-SEAL as soon as

Be sure to visit MMC’s Whale Bus this summer at McNears Beach
(June 15) and at Paradise Beach (August 3) parks.
Complete contest information will be available June 1 at
marincountyparks.org. If the image you submit includes
people, obtain the necessary permission(s) from the individual(s)
depicted. A photo release form will be available on our website
and can be requested at [email protected].

Enter the 40th Anniversary
Photo Contest
Marin County Parks invites amateur photographers to enter a
digital photo competition as we celebrate 40 years of preservation
and recreation. The contest begins June 1, 2012 and ends August
31, 2012. Sponsors Seawood Photo, Marin Filmworks, REI,
and Nick’s Cove donated sure-to-please prizes. The grand prize
is a one-night stay at Nick’s Cove & Cottages on Tomales Bay! We
are looking for images that capture the everyday extraordinary
beauty of Marin County Parks. Specifically, exceptional and fun
images in the following categories:
1.Landscapes and vistas
2.Plants and wildlife
3.People enjoying our parks and preserves (can include dogs
and/or horses)
Upload images for consideration to our Flickr account.
Photo captions must accompany all submissions and include:
1.The subject of the image
2.Contest category

Construction of the bike park, originally planned for summer
2012, likely will occur in 2013, when regulatory permits and
sufficient funding are obtained. With assistance from the
Center for Volunteer and Non-Profit Leadership of Marin,
an aggressive fund-raising campaign to raise $1,000,000 is
underway. Supervisors Judy Arnold and Steve Kinsey have
offered to match up to $50,000 in donations. To date, bicycle
enthusiasts have donated over $26,000 toward this match!
Bicycle equipment manufacturers and foundations are also being
approached. In addition to seeking monetary donations, we
need volunteers to aid with construction and maintenance of the

Road & Trail Management
Plan/EIR Update
Staff hosted another well-attended community workshop on
March 31st where the presentation centered on draft “Visitor
Use Policies” and “Visitor Use Management Zones” proposed for
the open space preserves. The next project phase includes the
development of a decision-making process for selecting the
roads and trails to be decommissioned, re-routed, enhanced, or
built to achieve the Open Space District’s goal of a sustainable
and environmentally sensitive road and trail network. The Draft
Environmental Impact Report will be available for review in
