Subject: Rear calipers on Crown Victoria police cars
Vehicle Involved: 1998-99 Ford Crown Victoria with heavy-duty police package
Condition: Standard-duty calipers installed in place of heavy-duty calipers
Repair Procedure: When servicing the 1998-99 Crown Victoria with the heavy-duty police
package, be aware that standard-duty calipers have been discovered on some
vehicles.
The Highland County (Florida) Sheriff’s Department has reported that some 1998-99 Crown
Victoria police cars may have a heavy-duty caliper on the right rear and a standardduty caliper on the left rear.
The heavy-duty caliper uses a phenolic (plastic) piston to prevent overheating of the brake fluid.
The heavy-duty caliper requires a different pad with a smaller pad clip that fits into
the phenolic piston. The phenolic piston has a 1-in. hole for the pad clip. The steel
piston has a1¾-in. hole for the pad clip.
If this problem is discovered, contact the local Ford dealer to have the correct caliper installed.
OPTION: Raybestos heavy-duty caliper, part number RWC 10897, can be used.
