HOPE AND FORGIVENESS
There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God
punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty.
Today's first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, "The LORD on his part has forgiven
your sin" (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and
those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God's mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the good news would have been too
good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today's Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is
forgiven because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough!

Bishop Burbidge's Homily at 2016 Priestly Ordination
Ordination to Priesthood of
John Augustine Kane and Michael Gerald Schuetz
Saint Catherine of Siena Church, Wake Forest
June 4, 2016
… John and Michael, you are ordained priests at a very historic and
joyful time in the life of our Church as we continue the celebration of
Father Schuetz, Bishop Burbidge, Father Kane
Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. It is the hope and prayer of Pope
Francis that this grace-filled moment will be a time for all of us to experience a radical transformation and
become totally new persons in Christ.
From the first moment you heard God’s call to be priests, you became aware of the need for his mercy.
Like Jeremiah in our First reading, you felt unworthy and unprepared. Yet, God repeated his unfailing love
for you and promised that his mercy is far greater than any sin or weakness. Then, with God’s grace, you
were able to say: “Jesus, I trust in you.” ...
… In this Jubilee Year, Pope Francis encourages all priests to be “missionaries of mercy.” Therefore, John
and Michael, go out to the many people who are burdened with guilt and shame and assure them that
God never tires of forgiving those who express sorrow for their sins and the desire to begin anew. Go out
as missionaries to those who have wandered from the Church and assure them that God stands ready to
embrace them and welcome them home.
As young and newly ordained priests, I believe you also have a special opportunity to go out with
missionary zeal to our young people who sometimes stumble and fall in light of the many temptations
around them. They can so easily give up on themselves. Convince them God never gives up on them...
… Most especially, John and Michael, in response to the Lord’s command in today’s Gospel to love one
another: do the works of mercy. Never let administrative tasks or duties take you away from serving the
poor, the sick, the lonely and all those in most need. In you, may they see the face of Christ.
John and Michael, you are called to live totally for Christ and His Church in the celibate state; to be
faithful to the promises of respect and obedience; to pray without ceasing; and to serve and not to be
served. Faithfulness to that call is only possible when you respond to the words of Jesus who says:
“Remain in my love.” When you do, you will always have the grace and strength you need.
Also, stay close to Our Blessed Mother, who will watch over you. Allow your brother priests to support
you and rejoice in the love of your dear parents and family members. With these gifts and God’s amazing
grace, I am confident that our Church and diocese will be blessed today with two new wonderful and holy
priests who will go forth throughout this Jubilee Year and throughout your Priesthood as missionaries of
mercy. May He bless you and on this joyful day and always. Amen.
(The entire sermon – as well as the pictures and video of the Ordination Mass – can be found online at
the Diocesan website www.dioceseofraleigh.org).
We’ll miss him and we want him to know it!
Father’s Farewell Reception: Saturday, June 18th 6:15 pm
Bishop Burbidge has announced the assignment of Father William Upah as Pastor of our neighboring
Craven County parish, Annunciation Catholic Church, Havelock.
Bishop has assigned Father Michael Schuetz as our new Parochial Vicar as he was ordained last Saturday.
These changes are effective June 23rd.
Congratulations to them both!

MOVIE OF THE MONTH
Heaven’s Key to Peace is about the Message of Fatima.
Including the stupendous Miracle of the Sun in 1917 that was witnessed by 70,000 people and confirmed the
Message. God performed this miracle so that we would believe The Message, given by his Mother,
and act on it before it is too late.
It is a heavenly warning no one should ignore!. It is the Key to Peace in the world, but we must USE the key!
Join us in the Chapel on Sunday, June 26 at 2.30 p.m.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! Volunteer needed just two hours on Sunday once a month. Please join us!
Open Sun. 9–1 & Wed. 9–12 in the Family Life Center. All proceeds benefit St. Paul Catholic Church.
WE CAN USE YOUR HELP!
We have formed an interest group for active ministry to aid seniors without family in town. Sometimes you just need a hand to get
things done, you know? We used to have a group called “low flying angels” who could swoop in and help out. The first step to
helping the elderly with daily and practical needs, as well as connecting them with more professional resources, will be a current
list of “helpers” matched with a current list of needs.
Mary Pickhaver is leading the effort and is collecting your input to answer the question: how do the elderly get connected with
those who can help with their needs? Are you aware of needs that are difficult to meet? Are you aware of resources that are
underused or not well publicized? Have you found resources for help that you want to compliment and pass on?
You can send an email to Fr Tully ([email protected]) or to Mary Pickhaver ([email protected]). Thanks for giving this some
thought and prayer: what do you need as an elderly person and what resources do you know and trust?
If you have a big heart for kids and love to teach Saint Paul might be
the place for you. At Saint Paul, you don't just teach the data you get
to teach the rest. The fruit of our school is its graduates and we are
looking for two great teachers to join our team where our students
are formed spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically.
We have small classes, a great curriculum, few extra duties and prayer and worship is part of your week at Saint Paul. Our benefits
are great, our pay per student is higher than most every public school, and our teachers get to be creative.
If this sounds like a school you want to be a part of please send me your resume and set aside some time for an interview over
next couple of weeks. We are just about to finish a great year at Saint Paul and are looking forward to a bright future.
It is hard to believe we have been at this for 129 years in New Bern, NC. Saint Paul is one of over 30 Catholic Schools in Eastern
North Carolina. We are small but we are part of a much larger school system that loves teaching children and introducing them to
the person who matters most in their life, Jesus Christ.
Contact Deacon Dave Kierski at [email protected] or call the school - 633-0100.
ALTAR SERVERS
Join the Tully/Schuetz Team! We need you!
Our parishioners may have noticed some additional altar servers at Mass recently. We are about to train a
newly ordained priest in his first assignment. We are training new servers, so there will be all ages of “rookie”
servers at each Mass over the coming weeks. Please be patient while we get them all “up to speed.”
If your child is interested in serving for the upcoming school year, he/she needs to come on board this summer.
Please contact Katie Shorter at [email protected] if you are interested.
Can you be host for THE CELEBRANT SINGERS ??
We need to put them up for a night!
The Celebrant Singers are coming to Saint Paul again!
They will be arriving on July 6, 2016 for a Concert in the Church at 7:00 p.m.
As before, when The Celebrant Singers were here in 2007,
we ask a few parishioners to house 1 or 2 performers for July 6th after the concert.
Carol Hicks will be calling to see if you will be so kind as to respond to this request.
Or you can call Carol – 252-636-5169.
IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BE A CATECHIST?
In 1993, the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples speaks of the sacred vocation of the
catechist and the importance of the catechist and their role. A catechist is one who is open to the Word, to
God, to the church and has a “missionary openness” to the world.
We are looking for people of faith willing to grow more deeply in your faith, in your relationship with God
and willing to serve our parish community by passing on our most precious catholic faith to our children.
Please ask the Lord for His guidance.
Please call Joy Harsen 252-229-2394 to find out about the vocation of a catechist.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION PROGRAM
Do you attend mass but are NOT Catholic?
Are you married to a non-Catholic who has voiced an interest in our faith?
Were you baptized Catholic but never received any other sacraments?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions please call us to enroll in our next RCIA program that will
begin in the fall. We meet every Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:30 in the FLC. Our goal is to help you
become educated in the faith and to prepare you to receive the sacraments. Sessions are informal and
interactive, our goal is to educate and answer the questions presented by those in attendance.
Please call the church office at 638-1984 to register or Marcelene McLure at 252-497-0619 for detailed information.
