READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Tuesday: Wednesday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Sunday: Nm 11:4b-15; Ps 81:12-17; Mt 14:13-21 Dn 7:9-10, 13-14; Ps 97:1-2, 5-6, 9; 2 Pt 1:16-19; Lk 9:28b-36 Nm 13:1-2, 25 — 14:1, 26-29a, 34-35; Ps 106:6-7ab, 13-14, 21-23; Mt 15:21-28 Nm 20:1-13; Ps 95:1-2, 6-9; Mt 16:13-23 Dt 4:32-40; Ps 77:12-16, 21; Mt 16:24-28 2 Cor 9:6-10; Ps 112:1-2, 5-9; Jn 12:24-26 Wis 18:6-9; Ps 33:1, 12, 18-22; Heb 11:1-2, 8-19 [1-2, 8-12]; Lk 12:32-48 [35-40] Reflecting on God’s Word...We expend a lot of effort making money for our families, planning for retirement, and managing our investments. Yet we have no control over when our lives will be demanded of us. Wealth may not be the only “treasure” that we “store up.” We may store up good deeds that allow us to feel smug and self-satisfied, or grudges that put others in our debt. The scriptures today remind us that whatever we might be banking on to keep us safe is mere “vanity.” Christians have a great treasure in Jesus Christ, who personified for us the loving kindness of God. Whenever we feel overwhelmed by our vulnerability we can turn in hope to the life and love that flow from his cross. Copyright © 2012, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. Derechos de autor © 2012, World Library Publications. Decimoctavo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 4 de agosto de 2013 Stewardship Reflections~~August 4 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time: That we may remember that the many possessions we strive to acquire are worthless in the eyes of the Lord. “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Luke 12:15 The Gospel message today is so contrary to our modern culture where advertising continually tries to convince us that our value lies in the things we possess. Jesus showed us that our true value lies in the way we live our lives. He challenges us to not store up or hoard material possessions, but rather to live a grateful and generous lifestyle. Dick Penning; Stewardship Ministry; 832-260-6010 Attention Parishioners!
