A MESSAgE FrOM rABBi rOSEnBAuM
unreading the Bible
One of the students in our conversion class
was raised in a religious Christian home. She
told me she has read the Bible ten times. Ten
times! We are the people who gave the Bible
to the world. Yet, how many of us have read
our Scripture cover to cover even once?
Of course, Jews don’t only read the Bible. We
un-read the Bible. Reading the Tanach is a
spiritual practice. And, it involves a deliberate act of de-construction.
Here’s how it works. We read a passage. We find things wrong with
the text. There are contradictions. The behavior of the characters (God
included) seems unethical or out of sync with our contemporary ideas.
We argue, we question. And, out of this ‘taking apart’ of the text
comes a deeper insight that has expanded Jewish sensibility and has
made Judaism bigger, embracing more than when we started.
The practice of un-reading the Bible is a rehearsal for the un-reading
of reality. When I was in high school I had a friend who had never left
Brooklyn. I’m sure he has by now. When Vladimir first crossed the
bridge to Manhattan, I know his world got bigger.
We are all like that. We think we’re broad minded, but we live within
the narrow range of our experience. We’re like my friend who never
experienced Staten Island, or like the Europeans of 1491 who didn’t
know there was a Western hemisphere. Centuries from now, when
our descendants travel to distant galaxies, they’ll wonder how we
could be so preoccupied with this tiny world we call Earth.
That’s why we unread the Bible. We deliberately bust up our preconceptions about the text. We look at a story we thought we knew as
if we’d never seen it before. That’s because if we can look at the Bible
this way, we can look at our lives this way. The goal is to leave Brooklyn
and expand our world.
But, to unread the Bible, first we have to read the Bible. Can we find 50
righteous people at HNT who will commit to read the entire Bible this
coming year? Let me know if you’d like to be part of this soul-stretching
project (email me at [email protected]).
The building blocks of our world can be assembled in more than one
way. Let’s see how creative we can be. Let’s leave Brooklyn together by
reading and unreading the Bible.

Memory is one of the most vital parts
of being human. Every year we gather
together along with Jewish communities
around the world to remember our
tragedies and to commemorate them.
The Jewish people lost the first and
second Temples on the 9th of the
Hebrew month of Av, and there have
been many tragedies that have befallen
our people on this date. Join us this
year for a meaningful and solemn
commemoration of these tragedies, as
we go from darkness to light.
Sunday, June 19 • 9:00 AM - 10:30 AM
Please join us for the HNT Minyanaires Club. One Sunday a
month, the morning minyan gets a little more interactive and
a little more ruach-y (spirited), and mixes in some English
readings too. Enjoy a light brunch after the service. Eat, schmooze
and get to know other Minyanaires! All who attend will be entered
in a monthly Minyanaires Club drawing for fabulous prizes

Jewish Approaches to Ethical Government
What guidance can our Tradition give us as we face a very important
presidential election in November? Among the issues we will explore:
• Is God a Democrat or a Republican?
• Are we one issue voters? Does a candidate’s position on Israel
outweigh all other considerations?
• Do considerations of character and personal ethics trump a
candidate’s stand on the issues?
• Does the government which governs least govern best?
Join us for a provocative text study session & discussion.

Swedish SummeRun (5K Run/Walk) was started in 1993 by Saul
Rivkin, MD, and his five daughters, with the help and support
of Swedish Medical Center, in memory of Marsha Rivkin z”l, a
beloved HNT member, and in recognition of the ongoing fight
against this deadly disease. Since 1993, Swedish SummeRun has
raised over $4 million towards ovarian cancer research.
We continue to participate in loving memory of HNT members
Marsha Rivkin, Babs Fisher, and Gail Stulberg. Money raised
from SummeRun will help the Marsha Rivkin Center in its
mission to save lives and reduce suffering through improved
treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer.
100% of proceeds benefit the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian
Cancer Research. Last year we raised $1,150 – This year our
goal is $2500. Help us top that goal and run cancer down!

A MESSAgE FrOM DirEctOr OF EDucAtiOn,
ED. D. cAnDiDAtE, EliyAhu krigEl
A D'var
“Ben Zoma said, who is wise? He/She
who learns from all people. As it is
said, from all my teachers I have gained
understanding.” Avot 4:1
When we view each encounter, each
experience, and each person we come
into contact with in our lives with an open heart, we fulfill Ben
Zoma’s message above. Lifelong learning isn’t about staying in
one place. Continuously learning is important because it helps
us develop into the people we all have the potential to become.
The Jewish midot or value of learning, known as Talmud Torah,
dates all the way back to the reception of the Torah. Shavuot
begins on the evening of June 11. Shavuot commemorates the
birthday of the reception of the Torah. Whether we believe in
the historical accuracy of the Torah being received on Mount
Sinai or not, the main takeaway of Shavuot is what we now do
with the Torah in our own lives. Do we live each day embodying
gratitude reminding ourselves and those around us of the
mystery of creation? Do we go about our day and treat each
potential connection as a chance encounter, to be forgotten as
soon as our head touches the pillow to sleep for the night, or
do we invest meaning in our relationships and connections?
The choice is ours and Shavuot is a reminder built into our
calendar year to constantly strive for a deeper understanding
of the complex world around and within. May we all be blessed
this Shavuot and into the summer with the words of Ben Zoma
and the ability to learn from each person we encounter so we
can grow and gain a deeper understanding of our own life and
community!
As I conclude my first year at HNT, I would like to thank each
of you for your tremendous efforts in helping my family and
I adjust and become fully integrated into this wonderful
community. What has most impressed me this year about HNT
relates to all the thoughtful conversations I have had with all of
you as I have gotten to know the many supportive faces is this
special place. Your dedication is an inspiration to me. Thank you
to the board of directors, the parent committee, and the many
parents, students, and teachers at FRS who continue to be the
reason our community is vibrant and growing.
What a blessing you all have been for my family and I and we
look forward to many more joyous occasions in the future
rooted in the Jewish learning experience with all of you. Please
stay in contact with me with about your Jewish journey into the
summer. Any B’nai Mitzvah questions, I’m here to help support
the process and beyond. I look forward to deepening our
relationship in the future and have a wonderful and
safe summer!

frankel Religious School (fRS) 2016-2017 Registration
The mission of the Frankel Religious School (FRS) is to build a
vibrant school community where students actively live Jewish
lives expressed through their actions and values. FRS creates
a foundation for fostering deeper connections to Judaism,
Israel, Hebrew, and the modern world. Last year, we adopted
a new curriculum through the Jewish Theological Seminary
called Etgar Yesodi (Essential Challenge). Etgar Yesodi uses the
power of cooperative learning, the value of addressing multiple
intelligences, and sees the importance of differentiating
instruction so that the learning is relevant and engaging.
Interfaith and non-traditional families have an important place
at the table of learning at FRS as we engaged in continuous
learning from babies to bubbies.
Now is the time to sign up for Frankel Religious School! The
registration link is now live on the HNT website. The first
50 families who register will be entered into a raffle for a
brand new Lenovo Yoga 2. We will raffle off this special 2-in-1
computer/tablet on the first day of FRS on September 11 at
our Zman Tefiallh (School Assembly) 9:30 AM - 10:00 AM in the
main sanctuary. Our school calendar is up on the HNT website
and we are working as a staff over the summer to breathe new
life and meaning into our educational program and curriculum.
Look for a revamped B’Yachad program and a lively Kadima

youth programming reflections
It’s been an epic year for Seattle
Achim USY 2015-16!
We kicked off at the Seattle Aquarium
and stayed in regular contact holding
ever-more delicious monthly Friday
night potluck dinners to celebrate
Shabbat. Ruach and card games
abounded! In February, we upheld
our traditional Un-Valentines Day
Movie Night, screening the timeless
classic “Dodgeball” after havdallah, and we also rocked the mic
for Purim Karaoke.
Our March highlight was our own chapter Shabbaton “The
British Invasion”, with 24 teens in attendance, where we ate,
slept, prayed, programmed, ate and drank tea at HNT. After
Shabbat, we visited laser tag and Sky mania. Incredibly, no
one threw up. The USY Board wrote many superb programs–
YESHER KOACH! For Social Action/Tikkun Olam, USY went
above and beyond raising over $300 by designing and selling
weekly “Shavua-tov’o’grams” for the FRS community to give to
one another.
Several of our 8th -12th graders, thirsty to continue their
Jewish learning beyond B'nai Mitzvah, have been participating
in Livnot Chai, our supplementary High School Program that
partners with local synagogues. It was fantastic to teach several
of our 8th and 10th graders personally! Our new initiative,
the monthly Sunday morning 8th grade Leadership Program
thrived. We helped students develop their skills to become
Madrichim (leaders). We can’t wait for them to take on the
mantle of working in the school as Torah tutors and/ or as
classroom TAs. Thank you to Irit Eliav Levin for coordinating this
program, and giving us invaluable life lessons!
Kadima youth group for the 6th and 7th graders has really
moved FORWARD. We have been running monthly afterHebrew School events that have been fun, loud, and very well
attended. Our 6th graders stay on Monday evenings and our
7th graders on Tuesday evenings for pizza, interactive games,
and social bonding-time.
Thank you all for supporting our youth programs, especially the
parents who offered their homes for our USY Shabbat dinners,
and for driving your teens everywhere! Regional Director Becca
Powazek has been invaluable. Lee Peha was our fantastic USY
advisor and we will miss his beautiful smile. Big mazal tov to
our incoming USY advisor Michaela Covner!
Shout out to our USY board: Jessi Luper, Nate Sigmon, Ariela
Ikezawa, Elana Lessing, Joey Peha, Eden Weiss, and Rebecca
Brown for your hard work and enthusiasm. Keep that pinwheel
spinning! Lucas Waggoner, our Kadima Advisor was a masterful
games leader, and a wealth of wisdom!
alongside Rhiannon Gerhardt who has tirelessly coordinated
behind the scenes. Thank you all!
I'm so excited for the future of the youth experience at HerzlNer Tamid and to keeping this great momentum going. Stay
tuned and have a wonderful summer,

why take hebrew classes?
In the past, when I took a Hebrew class, I would memorize the
letters and then forget what I had learned as soon as I left the class.
After a long day at work I would think to myself “I really do not
want to go to class. I just want to go home and rest.
But when I decided to try to learn Hebrew – again – this time the
experience was very different.
Within minutes I was revitalized.
Janine is an excellent teacher and she has an incredible ability to
understand where each person in the class is coming from.
She knows how to make the material meaningful.
Janine gave us the ability to learn using the method that works
the best for each of us. She even told us that “homework” was
not required. By the end of the session, we were memorizing the
letters, and to my surprise, within a short time, I discovered that
following Shabbat and morning minyan services became easier.
I definitely do not have a natural language aptitude – quite the
opposite - but I am learning Hebrew. It is amazing. I am even
taking a second class in Hebrew prayer. During the past month we
read and translated the Hagaddah. These classes are a wonderful
“escape” from the rest of my responsibilities and you feel like you
are actually accomplishing something!
Thank you, Janine, for making services more meaningful, for giving
me a feeling of accomplishment, and for the surprise of surprises,
making it fun!
VERY EXCITING!

S’chach, the greenery to adorn your sukkah, will be available in
25 lb. bundles. A Sukkah Kit includes everything but the s’chach.
Learn how to assemble your Sukkah Kit at our hands-on Sukkah
Workshop on September 25 at 10:00 AM.
