On the one hand, as we say at the Passover Seder, Dayenu! If God had only done this one miracle for us, and not all the others, that would have been enough. In other words, as much as we want to improve ourselves and the world, it’s essential that we take time to celebrate the blessings which are already ours. On the other hand, we want it all! And, we have a right to our ambitions. There are things we can do better, and much of Judaism is about spurring us into action, so that we rise to the next level. Our challenge as Jews is to be happy and creatively dissatisfied at the same time. As we look over the year past, we have so many reasons to say Dayenu. We can be grateful for: • Another quality Torahthon • A terrific Chanukah party • A wonderful Legacy Brunch, in which we raised more funds than ever before (and Janine and I thank you again for the touching tribute) • The Muppets Take Shushan, another fabulous Purim shpiel • An amazing Scholar in Residence weekend with Rabbi Irwin Kula • Another outstanding Day of Service in April After a thorough search for the best person, we were thrilled to hire Eliyahu Krigel to be our new Director of Education. We were impressed with Eliyahu’s warm and engaging personality, his ability to connect with children and adults, his experience in Early Childhood as well as Elementary Education, his spirituality, and the creative spark that he brings to everything he does. If hiring Eliyahu were the only new thing we did this year, we could say Dayenu. But, there’s more! Our administrative staff under the very capable leadership of our Executive Director, Nadine Strauss, is re-organizing in some very creative ways to provide a more flexible and dynamic response to the needs of our large and active congregation. With Eliyahu Krigel coming on board, Rabbi Yarkin’s responsibilities have shifted to allow her more time to enlarge her outreach work. So, we have been doing a lot of creative re-tooling on the leadership level. We have so much to say Dayenu for. But, we are creatively dissatisfied. We want it all! So, among the things to look for in the coming year: • An expanded Early Childhood Program, with Chava Mirel leading a weekly Tot Shabbat program at HNT on Friday mornings for the under three crowd. • Cantor Kurland’s Lunch and Sing Along program, starting in October. • A refurbished and souped up Torahthon, one night only— on a Saturday night! • A stepped up relationship between HNT and Camp Solomon Schechter as both Eliyahu and Rabbi Yarkin spend significant time there with our kids, then bring back the If this is all we did this year, we could say Dayenu with a full camp spirit to HNT heart. But, there’s more! In Rabbi Yarkin’s first year with us, • A Zimriyah/Song Festival in which varied age groups she did wonderful work, including (but, not limited to): of children and adults perform Hebrew songs on Yom • Teaching a very compelling class on human sexuality to our Ha’atzmaut/Israel Independence Day high school students at Livnot Chai • Ivrit for Everyone—a Hebrew Campaign, featuring as many • Stimulating and provocative teaching of Jewish text to as ten Hebrew language courses on all levels B’Yachad Grades 3-5 parents Sundays, and B’Yachad Grades • Judaism as a Path to Human Flourishing: Developing Your 6-7 parents on Saturdays own Spiritual Practice—taking Rabbi Kula’s challenge of • Starting the monthly Rosh Chodesh group for the women studying Jewish practices in depth, figuring out what their of our congregation job is, then trying them out for 40 days. • Creating Third Space, a very successful outreach program to draw the young adults of our community into the Jewish These are among the ways we hope to increase our connection orbit (see Rabbi Yarkin’s column for more detail on these to the beauty of our Jewish heritage and to each other in the programs and more). coming year. Janine and I want to wish all of our friends at HNT a wonderful, relaxing and rejuvenating summer! Rabbi Yarkin will continue and expand her work of drawing new people of varied ages into Jewish life as our Rabbi for All the best, Community Engagement. If Rabbi Yarkin’s great work is Rabbi Jay Rosenbaum all we had to be grateful for this year, we could say a very enthusiastic Dayenu. But, there’s more! 2 206-232-8555 • [email protected] • www.h-nt.org Tisha B’Av T’Filot DAILY MINYAN: WEEKDAYS . . . . . . . . . . . . 7:00 AM SUNDAYS AND SECULAR HOLIDAYS . . . . . 9:00 AM PRESHABBAT ONEG: FRIDAYS . . . . . . . . . 5:30 PM June July August Friday, June 5 - 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary • Birthday Shabbat Saturday, June 6 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • Bar Mitzvah of Ethan Schwartz Friday, June 12 – 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary Saturday, June 13 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • B’not Mitzvah of Mari Hanan & Jillian Smith Friday, June 19 – 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary • Solstice Shabbat services (and dinner - 7:30 PM) • Third Space Service & Dinner - 6:30 PM Saturday, June 20 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM • Shabbat Minyan Friday, June 26 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer • Anniversary Shabbat Saturday, June 27 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Friday, July 3 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer • Birthday Shabbat Saturday, July 4 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Friday, July 10 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer Saturday, July 11 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study - 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Friday, July 17 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer • Third Space Services & Dinner - 6:30 PM Saturday, July 18 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Friday, July 24 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer • Anniversary Shabbat Saturday, July 25 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM • Erev Tisha B’Av Services - 9:00 PM Sunday, July 26 – 9:00 AM & 2:00 PM - Tisha B’Av Services Friday, July 31 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer Saturday, August 1 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Friday, August 7 – 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary • Birthday Shabbat Saturday, August 8 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • Bat Mitzvah of Lilly Pruchno Friday, August 14 – 6:00 PM – Services in Upper Foyer Saturday, August 15 – Services in Feinberg Social Hall • Parasha Study – 9:30 AM • Services – 10:00 AM Sunday, August 16 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • Bar Mitzvah of Ryan McLendon Friday, August 21 – 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary • Third Space Service & Dinner – 6:30 PM Saturday, August 22 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • B’nai Mitzvah of Gavin Farac & Andre Wax Friday, August 28 – 6:00 PM – Services in Sanctuary • Anniversary Shabbat Saturday, August 29 – 9:30 AM – Services in Sanctuary • B’nai Mitzvah of Danielle Kohorn & David Wolf Services: July 25 • 9:00 PM & July 26 • 9:00 AM & 2:00 PM Memory is one of the most vital parts of being human. Ner Tamid 50th Anniversary Celebration T hank you to all who attended, supported and organized the Ner Tamid 50th Anniversary Shabbat on May 9. Nearly 200 past and present members enjoyed a special feeling of community as Ner Tamid leaders and descendants received honors; the Torah portions were chanted by congregants; Marilyn Corets, chair of the event, shared a heartwarming D’var about the continuity of the Ner Tamid flame through ongoing changes; the entire congregation received a beautiful blessing from Rabbi Rosenbaum; and a festive lunch was served. A limited supply of printed programs and commemorative lapel pins are available in the office. The pins depict the original Ner Tamid flame logo, which was designed by Roberta Corets z”l and featured in all of the event communications. The pin represents continuity and strength through the generations. This special keepsake is for all members past and present to wear with pride. Many thanks to the generous 50th Anniversary sponsors: Warren & Judy Babb, Mike & Ruth Bovarnick, Ellis Corets, Marilyn Corets & Adam Mihlstin, Jeff & Cindy Droker, Lana Finegold & HNT Judaica Shop, Bruce Florsheim, Judy Friedmann Benami, Peter Friedmann, Dan Friedmann, Joan Okrent, Joel Polsky, Robin Rogel-Goldstein & Dennis Goldstein, Ulla Rychter, Wendy & Michael Spektor, Ellen & Mark Stone, Marvin & Rahla Turck. A special todah rabbah to Marilyn Corets for the hard work, time and passion she put into chairing this event. 206-232-8555 • [email protected] • www.h-nt.org 5 A Message from Rabbi Yarkin A look back at my first year at HNT... I am always weary of Hillel’s caution to not be self-aggrandizing: “One who advances their name, destroys their name.” (Pirke Avot,1:13) But, I also take seriously his follow-up observation: “One who does not increase, diminishes. One who does not learn is deserving of death.” Thus, it is in the spirit of reflecting on our advancements in learning opportunities and community building that I look back on my first year here at HNT. In the synagogue, it has been a privilege to deliver monthly Shabbat morning d’var Torahs, and I have had the honor of speaking from the bima at the (almost) monthly Friday evening B’yachad School families programs, too. I have begun to work with B’nai mitzvah students on framing the meaning of their special day, and studying Torah with them on a one-on-one basis and also by going into the 6th grade class on Shabbat mornings to facilitate some tremendous discussions on how midrash (expounding material) informs our understanding of biblical stories. I have been teaching weekly classes on Tuesday evenings at Livnot Chai for our high school students, entitled “Let’s Talk About Sex,” which explores pertinent issues that teens are coping with, from gender identity and body image, to making sacred choices in healthy relationships. This class has been very popular! (please check out the Youth article for details of more teen programming that happened over the year). On Sunday mornings, I am loving my role of storyteller for our weekly assemblies and help set the tone for that day’s learning. Parents are always encouraged to stay with their child for assembly, and learn alongside them (I always strive to make my stories “adult friendly”). Parents of 3rd to 5th graders continue their learning together monthly on Sundays for special adult education classes. We have been investigating the Jewish perspective on the “Seven Deadly Sins.” I am delighted to say that this series will continue, as we still have some sins left uncovered! Parents of middle school children have been coming for their dose of learning to the monthly middle school B’yachad program on Shabbat mornings. We have experimented with different modes of prayer, philosophy, and shared how it feels to be a family going through the B’nai Mitzvah life ritual. Women’s League is an organization very dear to my heart, and after being invited to speak at their beautiful kick-off event, we realized it was time to revitalize a monthly Rosh Chodesh 6 group, open to all women in the community, and we launched this together in January 2015. At our Monday night gatherings, we welcome everyone with a beautiful candle lighting ceremony, and have created an environment of singing, sharing, laughing and learning together. These sessions have been a personal highlight of my year! Through being a public female face at HNT, and developing relationships with the incredibly active members of this community, I was invited to deliver the d’var Torah at the Jewish Federations “Connections” event, which was my first speaking engagement of that nature, and I will never forget how supportive and encouraging the HNT members in that crowd were to me that day. As a follow up, the remarkable Hadassah foundation honored me by asking if I would open for their Health and Wellness event by leading a guided Jewish meditation. I am so grateful that this happened as I came away from that experience having been utterly inspired by the keynote speakers, and it was the first time I had ever given a teaching wearing yoga pants. In December 2014, we launched Third Space at HNT, a community of Jewish young professionals in their 20s and 30s who laugh, learn, connect, and celebrate Judaism together. We meet every third Friday of the month to partake in melodic, upbeat services and dinner, and socialize together for happy hour. We have established partnerships with other young professional organizations around town, and have lovingly collaborated on multiple events, spanning parties, speaker series, Jewish trivia evenings, to Shabbat Around the Sound. We have begun our series “Passions” whereby lay leaders step up to run a one-off program that shares their passion with the group. Thus we have been treated to a beer tasting, and will be having a puppy dog afternoon picnic this summer. Beginning this June, we are meeting in each others’ homes for monthly “Torah on Tap” where, over desserts and drinks, we discuss relevant issues using scintillating Jewish texts both ancient and modern as our springboard. It has been a pleasure learning, singing, and celebrating with you all. Thank you for being so welcoming to my husband and I in our transition here, for your enthusiastic support as I try out new things, and for your patience as I learn the ropes (and your names!). Above all, thank you for trusting me to be one of your guides along your personal path of Jewish thriving. Todah Rabbah Rabbi Jessica Yarkin 206-232-8555 • [email protected] • www.h-nt.org Youth programming Reflections It’s been a blast for our Seattle Achim youth chapter! We kicked off September with a glorious BBQ bonfire social for all our 9th to 12th graders. For sukkot we experienced a gorgeous musical Havdallah followed by a Sound Garden in the Sukkah. We stayed connected to each other throughout the year by gathering for monthly Friday night potluck dinners to celebrate Shabbat, where our USY President Niva never failed to leave us unsatisfied with her legendary matzah ball soup. In February, to promote positive self-esteem, we held an Un-Valentines Day Movie Night, where we previewed the short movie made by our own USY board member Juliette Levy, “As You Love Thyself,” that won her an award! This was followed by screening the movie “Zoolander” (naturally) and a healthy dose of ice cream and popcorn! In March we rocked the microphone for a post-Purim Shpiel Karaoke, and many, many Hamentashen lost their lives that day. Yum! We then channeled that energy into some community mitzvah opportunities! I am so proud that USY took care of Teen Feed on behalf of HNT for March. They prepped, cooked and served 70 meals to teens-in-need living in the U-District. These teens continued their mitzvah work at our HNT Day of Service where they rocked-out an array of projects. Kol HaKavod to our teens for helping our community and thank you to parents for supporting these efforts! At the USY Regional Convention in May, we won USY Chapter of Excellence! We also hosted an important StandWithUs Israel awareness program, where teens were taught how to advocate for Israel in various situations. We talked about the country’s complexities and achievements with the help of a panel and college students who have encountered anti-Israel sentiments both in our community. Never to host an event without food, we bookended the year by with a BBQ and bonfire and (nondairy!) s’mores. I am thrilled to report that a record number of our teens have been going to Livnot, our supplementary High School program. HNT is in partnership with local synagogues and our students have been thriving in the elective, pluralistic environment. Many enrolled to take the Madrichim (leadership) training course that sets up our teenagers for success at becoming budding Jewish leaders and supervisors of children. This showed up in a beautiful way at HNT’s Frankel Religious School where many of our teens have chosen to become Teacher Assistants. Here, they are a vital presence in our school, helping to supervise our younger children, inspiring them on the path of ethical behavior, coaching them in their Hebrew reading, and helping our hardworking teachers execute their creative classroom activities. A large number of our students have also been putting their Torah reading skills to amazing use and have stepped up to become peer leaders, working as one-on-one tutors for our upcoming B’nai Mitzvah students. It is so beautiful to watch them work with these students, and pass on their knowledge; the B’nai Mitzvah students really look up to these older teens! Kadima programming for the 6th and 7th graders has really moved FORWARD (which is what the word ‘Kadima’ means!) this year. We started the Fall semester with Sunday afternoon programs with nothing other than Simpsons and Torah! What? D’oh! We “studied” Simpsons episodes and identified and discussed the Jewish value to which they pertained. See, Torah lessons can be found even in the Simpsons! Who knew? We followed that up with after-Hebrew School events that have been hugely fun and well attended! Our 6th graders stay on Monday evenings and our 7th graders on Tuesday evenings for pizza, interactive games, social bonding-time and youth empowerment! We have had synagogue-wide cell phone scavenger hunts, and pitted the students against one another in epic trivia rounds, from Sports, Music, Hebrew, to Harry Potter. Special shout out to Sammy Friedman and Risa Wagner for helping write rounds of trivia. As the year comes to an end, I want to thank everybody for the support they have shown our youth programs, especially the parents who have partnered with me in sharing feedback, being willing to drive their teens to these programs, and passed on the value of Jewish community building. I want to thank our Youth Commission, Steve and Ariel Novick, Briana Roberts, and Michael Berkenwald who were wonderful soundboards and advice givers to me in my first year here. Aviva Tilles our Regional USY Director has been an invaluable support. Lee Peha was our fantastic USY advisor, diligent in supporting our USY Board, leading awesome games, and getting things done! Maya Yeyni joined us as our Kadima Advisor in spring and was a hugely dynamic and smiley addition to our team! Becky Constantine was a constant support and ideas generator, and Leslie Mickel has been our passionate advocate, encouraging our youth to engage in all these opportunities, and coordinating the Torah Tutoring and TAs throughout the year. Thank you all! I’m so excited for the future of the youth experience here at Herzl-Ner Tamid and to keeping this great momentum going! If you want to get involved, email me at [email protected]. I think we just bypassed winter in Seattle… It’s also hard for me to believe that I am now halfway into my term as your president. The time has been going way too fast, but I’m really looking forward to another year with exciting changes here at HNT! I do enjoy most of my role as president, though what really gives me the most satisfaction is what many perceive as the “little things.” I’m referring to doing those seemingly “little things” that positively impact people’s lives, even in a small way. And, those little things really DO matter. The good news for most of you is that you don’t need to be president of the synagogue to be able to do those impactful things – we all have these opportunities right here at HNT. Sunday, July 19 • Race begins at 8:15 AM • Swedish Medical Center, First Hill, Seattle $30 pre-registration fee through July 15 $35 day-of-race Swedish SummeRun (5K Run/Walk) was started in 1993 by Saul Rivkin, MD, and his five daughters, with the help and support of Swedish Medical Center, in memory of Marsha Rivkin z”l, a beloved HNT member, and in recognition of the ongoing fight against this deadly disease. Since 1993, Swedish SummeRun has raised over $4 million towards ovarian cancer research. We continue to participate in loving memory of HNT members Marsha Rivkin, Babs Fisher, and Gail Stulberg. Money raised from SummeRun will help the Marsha Rivkin Center in its mission to save lives and reduce suffering through improved treatment, early detection, and prevention of ovarian cancer. 100% of proceeds benefit the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research. Last year we raised $2,575 - help us top that goal and run cancer down! Help make 2015 the best year ever as we run or walk in support of this great cause! Visit h-nt.org/SummeRun and join Team HNT! Daytimers SPRING 2015 Film Series June 17: Re-emerging: The Jews of Nigeria A 2012 film This film tells the story of a fascinating subculture of people who believe that they are descendants of lost tribes of Israel who made their way to Nigeria many generations ago. Numbering several thousand, they make a strong case for it as they maintain dozens of village synagogues and joyfully subscribe to such Jewish rituals as keeping kosher, observing the Sabbath, and circumcision. Like other African tribes we have seen, they love to sing; but their singing is the prayers and rituals that we all are familiar with as Jews.
