We have two age divisions: Junior 9-13, Senior 14-19. Plan to attend the Cook’s Meeting Friday, June 10th, at the designated grill-off area for explanations of the rules, any additional instructions and confirmation of turn -in times to be announced. Our office hours are 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Any youth interested in receiving financial assistance to attend a 4-H activity (such as camp) may apply for scholarships. The Community Service scholarship is based on the youth completing community service work. For every 10 hours of service the youth can receive a $40.00 scholarship. The complete guidelines are available on the website and hard copy from the Extension Office. The year runs from July 1—June 30. COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES: ~Volunteer to assist with Mercer County Fair July 2330. Older teens to assist with County Fair entry during livestock shows, floral hall and other areas. CONGRATULATIONS… 2016 Mercer County 4-H High School Scholarship Recipients Haley Anderson Beth Russell August 18-28, 2016 Class champions (some classes do not apply) in the Mercer County Fair 4-H Floral Hall will go on to compete at the Kentucky State Fair in August. Please note that there are rules regarding eligibility for each category and the number of entries a youth can have in one division. There is no entry fee for 4-H Cloverville entries. I take the entries to Louisville and bring them back. Youth who send entries will receive ribbons and premium money. Mercer County Fair is July 23-30 - July 29 at the fair grounds in Harrodsburg. This year any 4-H member competing in events at the fair can get into the fair at reduced admission. Reduced tickets MUST be purchased in advance from the Mercer County Extension Office. Procedure to get reduced youth tickets: 1. Call Extension Office @ 734-4378 before July 21 2. Tell us what day you will need tickets and what event you will be competing in. 3. Tickets can be picked up on July 21 from the Extension Office. DO NOT GO TO THE FAIRGROUNDS TO PICK UP TICKETS, THEY WILL NOT GIVE THEM TO YOU. 4. Cost is $2.00 for every ticket. 5. Please note this is not for rides, this is for gate admission only. Regular admission to the fair is $5. per person and carnival rides will be additional cost. Floral Hall (4-H & Open Division) IF you have made a project at home, school or at a 4-H meeting, I encourage you to enter it in the fair. Mercer County youth have the opportunity to enter exhibits in the open and 4-H Department. To exhibit in the 4-H department youth must be enrolled in 4-H as a member. Projects will be judged Monday Afternoon and exhibits will open for viewing Monday –Tuesday, Thursday & Friday evening. All 4-H participants will receive premium money for their project work: $4.00 - blue ribbon, $3.00 red ribbon, $2.00 - white ribbon, $1.00 extra for Class champion ribbon. A complete listing of projects that can be exhibited can be picked up at the Extension Office or visit our web site. It is recommended that you pick up floral hall forms & tags prior to entering projects. Summer Extension Interns Jessica Robinson & Denise Schaeffer Brand New 4-H Club, members will experience the great outdoors through hiking, camping, kayaking, caving and outdoor education. Club members will explore the world around them!!! Members will learn about outdoor survival skills as well as becoming an environmental steward. We will have our first meeting on Thursday, June 16 at the Mercer County Extension Office. To register please call by, 734-4378 by June 10, the spaces will fill up fast. Club is open to youth 6th grade and up. Randy Connelly and Mark Murphy will be the leaders. Remember to save your aluminum tabs from canned beverages. We will have classroom contests at the schools next spring. We are looking to individuals to assist with various 4-H projects/ events. Demo John Lincoln Perry—Junior Breads Demonstration Also honored to announce that Haley Anderson will be representing Mercer County 4-H as she has been slated to run for KY State 4-H President at State 4-H Teen Conference. Friday, July 22 thru Sunday, July 24. Open to Children 6-8 and the cost is $125.00, Camp Cloverbud is specifically designed for campers (and parents) who are not yet ready for a full week of a residential camping experience. The length of the stay is shorter and the staff to camper ratio is greater. Of course campers still participate in all the traditional camp activities offered at 4-H camp, including canoeing, swimming, archery, nature, and recreation, as well as a host of fun nighttime activities. This will be many campers first taste of “sleep-away camp” so staff and leaders take great care to create a caring community in which a cloverbud camper can grow in confidence and begin to enjoy the fun and camaraderie of summer camp! They will be with us for 12 weeks this summer. Jessica is a student at Eastern Kentucky University majoring in Horticulture. Her primary focus will be with 4-H. Denise recently graduated from the University of Kentucky with a Bachelors in Dietetics. Her primary focus will be Family Consumer Science. Jeans will be recycled into UltraTouch Cotton Insulation for Habitat Homes. You can drop your jeans off at Mercer County Extension Office. It takes roughly 500 to 1,000 pairs of jeans to create enough insulation (approximately 2,300 square feet) for one average-sized home in the US. Last we collected over 1,060 pairs, enough to insulate two habitat humanity homes. Boyle/Mercer 4-H Shooting Sports teaches youth to safely handle, shoot, and store firearms while improving their accuracy and performance on the range. Training conducted by Certified Shooting Sports Instructors credentialed to teach youth. WHAT: 4-H Shooting Sports disciplines covered at each meeting: Air rifle (BB and pellet gun) .22 Rifle Trap (shotgun) Archery WHO: Open to Boyle and Mercer County youth ages 9 to 18 only. WHEN: Youth are encouraged to attend May 26th organizational and archery meeting at Boyle County Extension Office at 6:30 p.m.. if you cannot make it, please let us know you are interested in participating COST: There is no cost to participate. QUESTIONS: Mercer County Extension - 734-4378. INTERESTED IN BECOMING A SHOOTING SPORTS VOLUNTEER? State 4-H Sponsored Training session is provided in different shooting sports disciplines according to availability and interest. Certification is provided following passing of test in any one discipline. The objectives is to help shooting sports leaders become qualified to teach junior and senior 4-Hers proper techniques and safety when using a firearm. The Fall Certification will be held on October 7-9, 2016 at State 4-H Leadership Center in Jabez, KY. The disciplines offered: Shooting Sports Coordinator, .22 Rifle/Air Rifle, .22 Pistol/Air Pistol. Black Powder, Shotgun, Archery and Hunter Challenge. Interested adults will have to complete youth protection guidelines. For more information please contact: Dana Anderson, Mercer County Extension Office Dairy, Horse & Livestock Exhibitors REMINDER: Any 4-H youth planning on showing dairy cows, market steers, market lambs, hogs, goats or horses must have 6 hours of educational classroom instruction before you can have your animals KUIP tagged. Hours can be earned by attending any of the livestock, dairy or horse club meetings offered by Mercer County 4-H. Tagging deadlines are in spring 2017. 4-H Livestock Club meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Mercer County Extension Office at 6:30 pm. First meeting will be September 6. 4-H Hoofprints Horse Club meets on the First Thursday of each month at the Mercer County Extension Office at 6:30 p.m. First meeting will be September 1. Learn about horses and horse industry. May choose to participate as horse owner or non-horse owner. Opportunities in showing, Members are involved in horse bowl, horse judging, and horse camps. 4-H Country Ham Club Meeting: 2017 -Sign-up for project is in November, please be watching the newsletter for more information. The youth who are doing 4-H Country ham Project MUST get 6 hours of classroom instruction thru the Country 4-H Club. 4-H Paws Club (Rabbit) Youth interested in raising rabbits and possibly showing them are invited. The club meets monthly and will resume in September. 4-H SCIENCE ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY 4-H ANIMAL SCIENCES 4-H Lego Buds Open to youth 6-8 years old. This club will be using legos to build models. Youth will be learning about science, engineering and technology. Meetings will resume in the fall, all meetings are held at the Extension Office. Participants may bring something they have built. They will have time for “building.” The club will meet each month at the Mercer County Extension Office, 3:30-5:00. Meetings will resume in September. WE ARE IN NEED of New or Used Legos to be used at Club Meetings. 4-H Lego Club (9-13 Year Olds) This club will be using legos to build models. Youth will be learning about science, engineering and technology. The club meets monthly at the Mercer County Extension Office, 3:30-5:00. Meetings will resume in September. 4-H Robotics and Technology Club (High School age youth) 4-H Robotics Club If you love science, technology, computers, and engineering, this may be the right club for you! Projects will include: robotics (both tetrix and LEGO mindstorms nxt), digital design, computer programming including raspberry pi, electronics, aviation, and advanced LEGO building. The club builds and programs EV3 Lego Robots to complete challenges. In order to have the club we need a leader. Our leader has retired but is willing to train a replacement. Please contact Dana if you are interested. Salvisa Community 4-H Club 4-H Dairy Club Any youth in the Salvisa Area are invited to join the Salvisa 4-H Club. The club meets 6:30 p.m. at the Salvisa Ruritan Building. The next meeting will be on September 8 Any youth interested in showing dairy cows. The club will resume meetings in October. 4-H Project Club 4-H Poultry Club Summer meeting schedule: June 6 and 20 then July 11 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mercer County Extension Office 4-H Dog Club Any youth who is planning to show their dog at the County Fair, please let us know. This club will be doing a variety of different projects from woodworking, gardening, forestry and other fun projects. The club is open to youth 9 years old and up. The Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Extension Office, 3:30—5:00 p.m. Cost will be $5.00 for supplies. Meetings resume in Sept.. 4-H Sewing Club Anyone interested in learning to sew? The club will be meeting on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month, from 3:30 –5:00 p.m. at the Mercer County Extension Office. Meetings will resume in September. Youth will learn how to sew. We have sewing machines and leaders who are skilled to teach youth. 4-H Scrap Booking Club The club will meet monthly on the second Tuesday of each month. Club is open to youth age 9-18 years olds. Each time youth will make a paper craft and work on a scrapbook page. Please be making copies of your photos this summer. Next meeting will Tuesday, September 13 at Mercer County Extension Office. 4-H Team Crusaders 4-H Paint Ball club that focuses on teamwork, community service & character education. Open to youth 10 years and up. They will be meeting throughout the summer, please contact Jeff Poole, leader at 859-583-0897. School 4-H Clubs at Mercer County & Burgin Schools will resume in September. Any youth enrolled in public school at Burgin or Mercer County in grades 4-8 are enrolled in 4-H through their classroom. The club meets monthly during school time. The youth will receive a monthly newsletter highlighting 4-H activities in Mercer County. KIDS IN THE KITCHEN 4-H Foods Club The club is open to youth 9 years old and up. The club resume the regular meetings afterschool in September where the youth learn about all aspects of cooking and preparing food and proper nutrition. Youth will get hands on experience in preparing/selecting foods. Next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20 at Mercer County Extension Office. County–Wide 4-H Teen Club (9th grade— High School) will be going to play soccer golf on Wednesday, June 8. We will meet at noon and travel to Lexington. Cost would be under $15.00 plus food. Please RSVP by calling or texting Dana Anderson. Any youth in the 9-12 grades are invited to join the council. 4-H Cloverbud Clubs (5-8 year olds) meet at each of the schools. Will have a kick–off event on August 4, at the Mercer County Cooperative Extension Office. Homeschool 4-H Clubs Monday, September 19 @ 3:00 p.m. @ Mercer County Extension Office Open to any Homeschool Youth.
