annual report - Episcopal Community Services
2013 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends, In this, our 30th year, 280,000 times, a man or woman in San Francisco will sit down to a fresh meal served by Episcopal Community Services. Over 1,000 times every night, a man, woman or child will close the door, turn out the lights, and go to bed in one of Episcopal Community Services’ nine housing sites. Tonight and every night, 534 men and women will climb into a clean, safe bed under a roof at one of Episcopal Community Services’ shelters, secure in the knowledge that they have access to a supportive case manager who knows them and is there to help them overcome their daily life challenges. Nearly 10,000 seniors and adults with disabilities receive assistance in navigating healthcare, public benefits, and other necessary services upon which they depend. Struggling students of all ages receive instruction and training to pursue their goals, ranging from advancing in basic literacy to obtaining their GED to starting a new career in the food service industry through our CHEFS program. In 30 years we have grown from 40 cots in the basement of Grace Cathedral to a continuum of services in Shelter, Supportive Housing, Senior Services, and Education and Employment. The scope of work carried out by our staff and volunteers is vast; the impact on people’s lives broad and deep. By your volunteer efforts and your generous financial support, you have made it possible for Episcopal Community Services to perform this life-saving work since 1983. With your sustained partnership, we will continue to provide the safety net of food and shelter, the security of housing, and the opportunities of education, training and employment. With your help, the women and men and the families who count on us for assistance will continue to succeed in their sometimes heroic efforts to make homelessness a part of their past. We are very grateful! Ken ReggioSedge Dienst Executive DirectorPresident 1 Front cover: participants in ECS programs. ECS Shelters: A Refuge for Those in Need ECS’s shelters assist the working poor, those whose jobs disappear when the economy goes bad, as well as people with longer histories of living in deep poverty. When the only space left for them is a dangerous street alley, men and women like Dolores (not her real name) turn to ECS for shelter, meals, and the support they need to get back on their feet. Dolores worked hard all her life, but in her fifties, she became homeless. Her nanny job ended and her housecleaning jobs got fewer and fewer, due to the economic recession. She had no family to turn to. When she lost her room and could no longer sleep on friends’ couches, she sought refuge at ECS’s Next Door shelter. With the assistance of ECS’s bilingual case manager, Dolores applied for housing. The wait lists were long, she says, but finally, after nine months, she was able to secure a studio in supportive housing. She gives thanks to God for answering her prayers. 2 Photos, opposite page: Jimmy Flebotte in his studio apartment and in the community kitchen at Bishop Swing Community House. Also pictured is the exterior of the building. This page: participants at Bishop Swing Community House’s Life Skills breakfast. Supportive Housing at ECS: “ECS Rocked My World!” Jimmy Flebotte lost his job because drinking interfered with his medication, and he began having seizures at work. Unable to pay rent, he lived on the streets, in shelters, and occasionally at friends’ places. Because of his seizures, Jimmy often ended up in the emergency room, once with a broken neck. After five years of homelessness, Jimmy successfully enrolled in and completed ECS’s culinary training program called Conquering Homelessness through Employment in Food Services (CHEFS) and was hired by his internship site. 3 In the same month, Jimmy qualified for a studio apartment at ECS’s newest supportive housing site, the Bishop Swing Community House. Bishop Swing House is environmentally sound (LEED-certified) and beautiful. Its 134 units have kitchenettes so that residents like Jimmy can cook their own meals and eat more nutritiously and affordably. All residents have access to the fully equipped community kitchen and living room areas in addition to a plethora of on-site services, including health clinics, food pantry distribution, counseling, and social groups. When Jimmy describes his ECS apartment, his voice cracks. Overwhelmed with emotion, he pauses to wipe his eyes. “It’s a studio apartment with its own bathroom and kitchenette. And it’s in a new building with a computer room, a laundry room, and a community kitchen that has ovens. I couldn’t believe it.” Jimmy smiles. “Between CHEFS and Bishop Swing housing, ECS totally rocked my world!” 4 ECS’s Adult Education Center Supports Students’ Success Hector Calderon studied at ECS’s Adult Education Center and recently passed his high school diploma equivalency exams. His two sons, ages nine and eleven, cheered as he received his certificate from ECS. Hector’s accomplishment is all the more laudable because he studied while he and his sons were living in a night-time-only shelter. They are now in a 24-hour shelter. Hector recently started a part-time job and hopes to move his family into a small apartment soon. In the meantime, he is grateful to ECS’s Adult Education Center for providing him instruction and a place to study. “They helped me, big time.” Photos, opposite page: Lucila Rivera and other Senior Services participants. This page: Hector Calderon and his children; Hector and ECS instructor Mark Thomas; students in ECS’s Adult Education class. Hector is one of 14 students who passed one or more of the GED subject tests this past year. Eight, like Hector, received their diploma. The instructors at our Adult Education Center and our CHEFS culinary training program provide homeless students like Hector with the guidance and support they need to meet their goals and improve their quality of life. As a single father, Hector is very aware that he is a role model for his sons, and he tells them, “No matter what, stay in school. You can do it.” 5 ECS Senior Services Aids Thousands Seventy-seven-year-old Lucila Rivera lost her housing when her sister—her sole source of support in the U.S.— died. Lucila comes regularly to the ECS Senior Center for her one hot meal of the day. Many seniors who attend the ECS Senior Center are similarly homeless, and like Lucila, who has a speech impediment, they cope with various physical or mental ailments. Another homeless Filipino widow was losing her hearing and eyesight when she was referred to our Senior Services, which serves over 8,500 people. The 81-year-old widow (who declined to give her name) had no income even though her deceased husband was a U.S. veteran of WWII. As with Lucila, our Senior Center staff helped her to apply for public benefits, medical care, and housing. She now has housing and, thanks to ECS and collaborating medical providers, she was able to improve her vision and hearing. The majority of our Senior Center’s 1,200 participants are currently or formerly homeless. About 40% are Filipino, reflecting the South of Market’s large Filipino population. All appreciate the Center’s noontime meal, food pantry, health and nutrition support, computer lab, and social activities. Like Lucila, they are incredibly grateful for the services and community they find at ECS’s senior center. “Thanks to all of you,” Lucila adds, “I have food and community.” 6 RE VENUE BY SOURCE FY2013 Private Revenue Program Income Public Support $1.2M $2.8M $15M EXPENSES BY PROGR AM AREA FY2013 EPISCOPAL COM M UNIT Y SERVICES BOARD OF DIREC TORS The Rt. Walt was passionate about ECS and its programs, and he was committed to seeing ECS fulfill its mission. He was a member of ECS’s Sanctuary Society. In addition, he and his wife, Meredith Tennent, created the Walter T. Conway, Jr. Fund. They have been joined by more than 50 family members and friends making gifts exceeding $115,000. We are most grateful for Walt’s service and the generosity of everyone who contributed. 7 A Community of Donors Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco thanks the following donors for their generous support. Gifts from the community constitute a vital resource for our programs, and we are grateful for each and every one. These gifts and donations were received between July 1, 2012 and June 30, 2013.
