This marker resides on the Broad Street sidewalk leading to the front entrance of the school. A brief ceremony took place at this site then all attendees relocated to the auditorium. A number of dignitaries including Principal Hackney and I spoke of Dr. Goldstein's life and accomplishments. I should mention that the event could not have taken place without the initiative, persistence, and dedication of our fellow board member Marc Adelman. When I was first asked to be a guest speaker at this ceremony, I wasn't quite sure where to begin my research about a man of such stature. Given the fact that Dr. Goldstein grew up in South "Philly" and specifically attended Southern, it became obvious to me that my speech should be concentrated on his early years downtown. At first, I wanted to gather facts about his life at the school, but unfortunately neither his 1911 Yearbook nor our school's archives yielded much about his activities. I later learned that Dr. Goldstein had written a book entitled "My World As A Jew". This document was my primary source of information that described much about his family in addition to his Public & Religious schooling. Israel's parents came from Lithuania to arrive in Philadelphia in 1895. They lived at 769 So. 2nd Street where they began to raise a family. Israel was the oldest of two brothers and one sister. Their father frowned upon outdoor activities which accounted for the children being raised in a strict environment. When Israel was ten years old, his father was told that Hebrew School could no longer teach him anything - take him to Yeshivah (which was Philadelphia' Junior Jewish Academy), where he studied for the next 2 years. It was obvious that Israel was a bright youngster. At the age of 12, Israel entered the Southern Manual Training High School - which was renamed South Philadelphia High School in 1912. Its classes were divided into 3 major curriculums: Manual Training, Commercial, and the General Course. In addition to attending Southern, Israel was also enrolled at Gratz College, a training school for Jewish teachers. While at Southern, one of his political milestones was being chosen as "senator”, to represent his Section in his senior class as well as being elected Class Secretary. He was also chosen salutatorian of his class where he had to deliver the commencement speech. In 1911, at the age of 15, Israel graduated from Southern and Gratz and was admitted to the University of Pennsylvania. While I reviewed his Yearbook, I came across some interesting observations that I'd like to share with you. Actually, how often does anyone have an opportunity to view a 100 year old yearbook. First, I noticed how literate and creative the students were in their writings and poetry - they were a real class act. In addition, the school was comprised of students from all sections of the city and their ages at graduation ranged from 15 to 20 years. Now, let's fast forward to 1953. That was the year that our Alumni Association established its Cultural Hall of Fame Awards Program and its first recipient was Dr. Israel Goldstein. Speaking of firsts, Dr. Goldstein should also be remembered as a founder of Brandeis University in 1948. In conclusion, an early chapter of Dr. Goldstein's book he reflected on his childhood in Philadelphia and was grateful that he had been raised in the City of Brotherly Love. He closed a chapter by saying "I have always taken pride in being one of Philadelphia's native sons". page #2 SPHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION • 103 YEARS OLD Southern High 2012 Inductees into our Athletic & Cultural Halls of Fame WINNERS Bob Greenberg ‘55 Pete Tate ’58 Jimmy De George ‘49 Dr. Sid Clearfield ‘57 Charlie Gracie ‘54 Dr. Ed Forte ‘49 Alan Levin ‘58 & Ben Farnese, ‘45 both SPHS Hall-of-Famers, made the presentations. SPHS honors the right of each student to have the opportunity to pursue and greatness by: 1. Offering a rigorous curriculum. 2. Insuring equitable access to resources. 3. Establishing climate where diversity is celebrated. 4. Ensuring that students and faculty engage in relationships that foster learning harmony and mutual trust. SPHS embraces its responsibilities to challenge students to become analytical and critical thinkers, who not only inherit our democratic heritage, but who also will lead the world to peace and prosperity. SPHS’s faculty, cognizant of its mission, leads and inspires students to develop their potential by modeling the value and significance of learning. On each and every day SPHS is a school in which we work, individually and collectively, to know, to support and to enrich our students, for we know reaching all students depends on reaching each one. For each student is challenged to build and maintain positive relationships. In the years ahead, SPHS will emerge as a “personalized high school” of greatness; the first step in “personalization” is making small the large high school through its formation and formalization of smaller learning communities through academics. We thank you for supporting our sincerest endeavor to pursue and achieve excellence and celebrate greatness. Otis Hackney III, Principal South Philly High School Archive Report by Archivist & Committee Member Marc Adelman ‘57 South Philadelphia High School history, asleep under the dust of neglect for so many years, other then when tendered by the interests of Treasurer Joe Manzo and Membership co-chair Willie Pollins, is slowly awakening the interests of many. History is deserving of our respect and those who have contributed are deserving of our honor. Since September 2012, the Alumni Room has hosted Mayor Nutter and School Superintendent Dr. Hite. The SPHS staff continues to use the room as a highly attractive meeting place. New plaques of honor have been added. Old plaques and trophies are continuing to be restored. The long standing project of restoring the 107 years of archive material in the Archive Room continues at a slow methodical pace. Organization sublimates chaos. New contributions from Ben Farnese, Sandy Wizov, Henrietta Patrick and Principal Hackney have been added and valued. The positive promotion of SPHS and the Alumni Association is exemplified by attractive posters in the lobby, Teacher-parent Room and the Alumni Room. History has been recognized by alumni member financial contributions for five banners representing retired athletes, and the very successful ceremony re-dedicating the Israel Goldstein Memorial Marker on Broad Street. The future includes a search for graduates, from 1919 to the present, who did not receive their diplomas. Their sheepskins (and some of them are sheepskins) will be presented at a graduation ceremony some time this spring. Archive material is being used to support the research of a doctoral Temple University student and his professor. We will continue to give additional support to the community organization LoMo for the beautification of the school campus as part of their Arboretum Project; support they greatly appreciate. All of the archive achievements are due to the generosity of spirit by the Executive Committee. Thank you! Marc Adelman, Archive Chairman. page #4 SPHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION • 103 YEARS OLD Letter from Scholarship winner to Mr. John Esposito/SPHS Alumni Award. My name is Zhuohini Li. I am the student who has been awarded an alumni scholarship grant during my Temple study life. It is my honor to get the chance to write to you. Four years ago I came to the United States with the dream of eventually becoming a Temple student. It is my pleasure to write this essay and talk about my accomplishments since graduating South Phila High School. To be able to study in the United States for a bachelor’s degree was a dream come true for me. Being immersed in an English environment dramatically improved my English and I have the opportunity to study a different culture and a different educational system. That is shy I moved to the U.S. of study in 2008 and finally got into Temple University. In 2010, The Accounting Dept. taught me that a company’s people are its ultimate products and give the company a strategic advantage. I learned that the commitment to employee well-being and talent development enhances an organization’s productivity, reputation and sustainable profits. My interpersonal leadership skills also allow me to communicate and negotiate in two languages in two countries, resolve conflict, and build a team. The John Esposito Scholarship provided me with the foundation to be successful. So I can focus on my study instead of seeking a job to support my tuition. Over all I really appreciate all the help you gave me during my university years. Thank you, Zhuohui LI. Cornelius Eaddy is the Minister at the Church. Bok High you know, is at 1901 S. 9th. He was raised at 11th & Washington, but didn’t go to SPHS. He & Hilda have enjoyed 32 years of marital bliss. They spoke as one, saying,”We just decided we wanted to give back to the community. A vicar gave us a $500.00 grant to get the food program started. With the assistance from Philabundance, 3616 S. More like dog park-to-kitchen. They spend one class period outside in the school’s new garden – two modest patches of asphalt on either side of the parking lot, now off limits to pooches. The spaces areplanted wth 21 raised beds. They burst with broccoli, chard, kale, beets, peppers, carrots, arugula, and herbs, which the kids poke and sniff, sample with a smile or skowl – and finally harvest, Habanero peppers and pole bean are shown harvested by student Govinda Kharel. Mayor Nutter and New School District Superintendent Meet in Alumni Room The SPHS Alumni Association Room was selected by Principal Otis Hackney as the premier venue for a recent news conference with the newly appointed Philadelphia School District Superintendent, Dr. William R. Hite. The interview was conducted by Channel 6 television personality, John Rawlins. Pride ran high among administration and staff for the safe, intimate and professional appearance of the Alumni Room. Ms. Kim Chek-Taylor recently enhanced the room with flowers for the special day. The news conference was part of the annual Philadelphia Back to School Education Extravaganza, the second annual program to be held on the grounds of South Philly High in the last two years. Music artists performed from an outdoor stage while 100 tables emphasized higher education, learning assistance and alumni association benefits. Our Alumni Association reached out for the first time in recent history to the general community. We had a table from 9a.m.- 3p.m. amply filled with 100th Anniversary books, sample Year Books, informational flyers, business cards, newsletters and membership material handouts. The table was decorated with one of our new South Philly High School Black on Red banners. Two easels on eachside displayed a huge promotional sign and a golden framed painting of the old school. Willie Pollins, Ed Rocco, Giovanna Cavaliere, Karimah Price and Marc Adelman represented the Alumni Association. They made contacts with many ex-graduates who were happy to peruse old yearbooks and discuss their years as students and inquire about membership in the Association. Willie Pollins stood out as he wandered through the crowd of hundreds hustling Anniversary books and membership applications apropos to a early era Philadelphia Bulletin newsboy pushing newspapers, “SPHS” Alumni Association works for you. Philly boxing trainer with a knack for niceties died last year Internet article by Joseph Myers; posted Feb. 9, 2012; Excerpts by Sam Chatis – SPHS Alumni Association. T he revered trainer of hundreds of boxers, including 15 world champions, passed away Feb. 1, 2012 in Oldsmar, FL, at the age of 90, two weeks after helping Muhammad Ali, his most renowned fighter, celebrate his 70th birthday. Angelo was a native of the 800 block of Morris Street and alumni of South Philadelphia High School. He devoted more than 60 years to preparing punchers for physical and mental tests, with 21 prosperous years going toward assisting fellow icon Ali. “When Angelo Dundee spoke, everyone listened,” associate and prominent promoter J. Russell Peltz said of his fellow International Boxing Hall of Fame enshrinee. Angelo’s early boxing education came from his brother Joe Mirena, a fledgling fighter. As the ring resident admired a boxer named Dundee, he changed his name, and so did brother. Angelo’s knowledge flourished in England during World War II. A serviceman for the Army Air Force, he acted as a corner man during military tournaments. He later earned an apprenticeship at New York City’s Stillman Gym, handling cuts and taping hands. In the late ‘50s he moved to Miami where he opened the Fifth Street Gym. Later in that decade he met amateur hopeful Cassius Clay in the young man’s hometown of Louisville, Ky. The slick Clay won his first bout on Oct. 29, 1960, and thanks to a handler’s outreach, would soon take on Angelo Dundee as his trainer. Thus began a fruitful partnership that included 53 wins from 58 contests and three heavyweight titles. As Ali approached middle age, he began to reduce his schedule. Meanwhile, Angelo who still remained faithful to his pupil decided to add Sugar Ray Leonard to his roster of students in the late ‘70s. The welterweight dynamo, already an accomplished presence, gave Angelo, who he had dubbed the fighter “a smaller Ali” for his boundless energy and gusto. Moving ahead to 1994 (where 20 years earlier Ali knocked out Foreman), Mr. Dundee decided to train 45 year old George Foreman for a championship fight against Michael Moore. With Mr. Dundee’s training and George’s impressive skills, Moore became Foreman’s 68th and final knockout. Inducted into the Hall of Fame two years earlier, Mr. Dundee needed nothing to prove his legacy, but the Foreman triumph cemented his winner status. It also reinforced a trait he and Foreman shared – courtesy. Peltz said, “He did have a line about it not costing anything more to be nice”. When countering claims that boxing is diminishing in importance, Angelo would say “They’ve buried boxing so many times, they’ve run out of shovels”. Tony Cona, Sam Chatis, guest speaker singer & guitarist Charlie Gracie and MC George DiPilato Well over 100 South Phillites and guests were in attendance. I believe this overwhelming response was attributed to the appearance of our guest speaker guitarist and singer Charlie Gracie. In the late 1950’s he had the No. 1 smash hit “Butterfly”, which made him the first rock-and-roll star to come out of Philadelphia. He spoke of his early years growing up in So. Philly, breaking into show business, and eventually making it his lifelong career. Our audience included mini-reunions from the girls’ class of ’48, the co-ed classes of ’55 and ’61. In addition, Dan Podolsky (’39) who was our retired board members is still as vibrant as ever. He had traveled from Elizabethtown, PA to attend our event. I’m worry free w/food gourmet style. I work out and still play my drums and my hobby of building model cars, ships and airplanes keeps me busy. A 42” TV is my mecca for sports. After one week here I thought I died and went to heaven. Sorry, my wife passed away 3 weeks later.
