City and School Board Elections to be Held May 10th
Strawn voters will elect
three school board members, a mayor, and two
city aldermen in the upcoming election on May
10.
For the Strawn ISD
Board of Trustees, five
candidates are vying for
three positions. The candidates are Shiela Flores,
Jeff Hopkins, Mindy
Hodgkins (incumbent),
Nancy Mallory (incumbent), and Jim Pollock
(incumbent).
The Strawn City Council has two candidates
for mayor: Tye Jackson (incumbent) and
Bill Hetrick.
Randy
Johnson is challenging
incumbents Jeff Greenwood and Shirley Lindsay for the two alderman seats.
Biannual Exes Homecoming
Celebration Slated for June
Plans are underway for
the biannual Ex-Students
Homecoming to be held
June 13 and 14. In conjunction with homecoming, the Bash on the
Bricks Festival (first held
in April 2013) will also
take place.
Kicking off the events
on Friday evening will
be a Poker Tournament
(time and place TBD)
and Exes Dance at Roots.

Texas Forts Trails Director to Speak at Next Chamber Meeting

Texas Forts Trail, will be
in town to co-host a tour
of the State Park. Her presentation at the Chamber
meeting will focus on tourism in the region and Palo

Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off Deemed A Big Success
More than 60 volunteers
turned out for the second
annual Don’t Mess with
Texas City-Wide Trash-Off
on April 5. About 40 youth
and 20 adults spent the day
picking up litter, setting out
new plants and planters,
and cleaning the City auditorium and old Fire Hall
located on the second floor
of City Hall.
Three groups picked up
litter along 2-mile stretches
of Highway 16 (north and
south) and Highway 108 to
the block plant. Over 40
bags of trash were picked
up, along with several large
bags of aluminum cans that
were donated to C.A.R.E.
to be recycled. The three
groups participating in
the highway cleanup were
C.A.R.E., 1G Youth Group,
and Strawn High School
Student Council.
Volunteers also placed
20 new colored planters in
front of businesses. The
Chamber and the partici-
pating businesses split the
cost of the planters, and the
chamber supplied the dirt
and plants. The Chamber
also purchased new yucca
plants for six of the concrete planters which were
placed around town in last
year’s cleanup.
Approximately 15 volunteers sorted through all of
the items in the City Auditorium/Fire Hall and
cleaned the space. Any furniture that is historical or
worth saving is temporarily
stored in the auditorium.
In case you haven’t noticed, a Keep Strawn Beautiful banner is displayed
under the Greyhound
sign by the railroad tracks
downtown. This banner
signifies that Strawn is an
affiliate of the Keep Texas
Beautiful program and
serves as a reminder for
everyone to take pride in
keeping our city clean and
making it a more attractive
place to live.
