Propylea, Acropolis, Athens MV AEGEAN ODYSSEY... Classically elegant, yet far from formal, MV Aegean Odyssey is the ideal ship for touring antiquity. This is a premiumclass vessel, rebuilt for cruising the coastal waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The ship easily approaches islands, enters remote inlets and explores ancient sites inaccessible to larger vessels, opening up experiences to you that others miss. This is boutique-style cruising. The ship carries an average of 350 passengers accommodated in comfortable and well-appointed suites, junior suites and staterooms. Enjoy a casual dress code, open-seated dining and many diversions including the outdoor pool, a full-service spa and stimulating talks in the lecture theatre. Two restaurants celebrate the Mediterranean’s glorious culinary tradition with the best ingredients in delicious and healthful dishes. Enjoy full waiter service and easy sophistication in the Marco Polo, the ship’s more formal dining room, where lunches and dinners feature delectable entrees. At dinner, complimentary house wines are carefully sourced from noted wine regions around the world. The Terrace Café offers cooking on the open grill and indoor and alfresco seating for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bistro-style restaurant serves appetizers, paella and authentic Italian pizzas. For a special treat, take afternoon tea — an English tradition made magical when enjoyed at sea. Aegean Odyssey’s crowning touch is the fine service of the crew, whose attention to detail and graciousness will complete your unforgettable voyage to antiquity. Cruise in comfort, relax in style. A casual and relaxed atmosphere on board Elegantly appointed accommodations UNESCO The Acropolis, the island of Delos and the mediaeval city of Rhodes in Greece; and Ephesus, the ruins of Xanthos-Letoon, Troy, the Blue Mosque and The Church of St. Savior in Chora in Turkey are UNESCO World Heritage sites featured on this program. The lecturers and speakers on a Voyages to Antiquity cruise are leaders in their fields, often affiliated with the world’s prestigious universities, including Oxford and Cambridge; best-selling authors; and experts from fine museums and organizations such as the Archaeological Institute of America. They are selected for their knowledge of Europe and their ability to bring the history, archaeology, architecture and art of ancient civilizations to life. Assisting the speakers during lectures and on trips ashore will be a team of young classical history graduates whose enthusiasm and specialized knowledge will enhance your explorations. Patara Blue Mosque, Istanbul DISCOVER THE HISTORY, ART AND CULTURES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD This journey through antiquity begins in the storied city of Athens. Day One Depart your gateway city for Athens, Greece.A Top Lecturers and Fascinating Talks Rhodes A Provided for Included Air participants. Day two Athens, Greece Upon arrival, transferA to the NJV Athens Plaza. Tonight, enjoy a Welcome Reception. Day Three B Athens Excursion: Benaki Museum. Delve into Greek history at the Benaki Museum, which has an extensive collection that will take you from antiquity through the early 20th century. Independent Exploration: The rest of the day is at leisure. Day Four B|D Athens/At Sea Excursion: Iconic Athens. Roam the remnants of Pericles’ extravagant architectural display, which crowns the city. Study the Parthenon’s illusory column design. Examine treasures and legendary sculptures in the Acropolis Museum. This afternoon, embark MV Aegean Odyssey. Day Five B|L|D Delos/Mykonos Excursion: Sacred Delos. Discover the tiny, deserted island of Delos, the religious centre of the Cyclades, where columns lie glistening in the sun and the Lions of Delos guard the Sacred Way. As the reputed birthplace of the god Apollo, Delos once was a principal religious and commercial centre of the Eastern Mediterranean. Enjoy a guided tour and walk along the spectacular Avenue of the Lions. Pay homage to the guardians of the Sacred Lake, where Leto gave birth to the twin gods, Artemis and Apollo. This afternoon, cruise to Mykonos. Independent Exploration: The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Tonight, join your fellow travellers for a Captain’s Welcome Reception. Day Six B|L|D Santorini Excursion: Santorini. The cliffs of Santorini rise from a great half-moon caldera. Visit Oia, a village of whitewashed houses, blue-domed churches and tavernas carved into the cliffs. Wealthy sea captains built the pastel mansions that now are homes to cafés, boutiques and art galleries. Continue to Akrotiri to see the excavations at the ancient Minoan settlement. Later, visit the cliff-top town of Fira and the Archeological Museum. Day Seven B|L|D Rethimnon Excursion: The Palace of Knossos. This magnificent palace complex, with its flamboyant decoration, courts, audience chambers and residential areas, is an impressive and inspiring site. Constructed about 1900 B.C., it was the administrative and religious centre of the Minoan kingdom. Here, King Minos held court — so mythology holds — and his wife gave birth to a half-man, half-bull creature that lurked in the palace’s labyrinth. The guided tour will take you through this legend-rich complex that sprawled across five acres, where everything has been reconstructed with care. Day Eight B|L|D Kos Just off the Turkish coast, Kos is best known as the birthplace of Hippocrates. The father of Western medicine was born on Kos in 460 B.C. The Asklepeion is the island’s most famous landmark. Named after the god of healing, it was a temple as well as a hospital where Hippocrates received his training. Day Nine B|L|D Rhodes Excursion: Old Town & Grand Master’s Palace. Leave behind the port where the famed Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood watch over the island’s harbour. En route, visit a lookout named Mount Smith, named after British admiral Sir Sydney Smith. The lookout was used to scan the seas for French ships in the Napoleonic era. Then, visit the citadel of the knights through the d’Amboise Gate and head for the restored Grand Palace. Later, stroll through the cobblestone Street of the Knights and admire the honey-coloured stone buildings. Step into the 15th-century Knights Hospital, now an archaeological museum that counts the Aphrodite of Rhodes in flawless Parian marble among its treasures. Day Ten B|L|D Fethiye Excursion: Patara & Xanthos-Letoon. Enjoy a guided tour of Patara, which offers one of Turkey’s best beaches and is the birthplace of St. Nicholas, the model for Santa Claus. Later, visit the archaeological site of XanthosLetoon, which was the capital of Lycia. Day Eleven B|L|D Izmir Excursion: Ancient Ephesus. During its heyday, the cosmopolitan city of Ephesus was on par with Athens and Rome. The seaside port that fuelled the city’s prosperity in ancient times is filled with silt, leaving the grand sites frozen in time in a state of remarkable preservation. Throughout the centuries, Ephesus has been dedicated to Artemis, a Roman stronghold and a centre of Christianity. Highlights of your walking tour include the Library of Celsus with its splendid columned façade, the Grand Theatre where St. Paul once preached his sermons, the terraced houses and the Temple of Hadrian. Few places bring antiquity so vividly to life. Day Twelve B|L|D Izmir Excursion: Pergamon: Acropolis & Asclepion. Ride a cable car to the hilltop capital of Pergamon and visit the city’s ancient healing centre on this adventure. Both the ancient Greeks and Romans left their mark on Pergamon. Pass through the Royal Gate to explore the noted library, the 10,000-seat theatre carved into the steep slopes and the dramatic Temple of Trajan overlooking the Selinus River below. See a shrine to Dionysus, a sanctuary of Demeter, the gymnasium, the Agora and the Asklepeion, an ancient spa and sanitarium. Day Thirteen B|L|D Canakkale Excursion: Troy. Canakkale is the gateway to the storied city of Troy, a city described in ancient Greek lore. Troy itself was long believed to be a mythical city until the late 19th century, when a series of excavations uncovered the ruins of a fortress and other evidence of a great city. These digs provided vital information about the ancient Greeks and Romans who built the city, which as a great trading port helped develop this region as the crossroads between East and West. This evening, gather with your fellow travellers to recount your amazing experiences during a Farewell Reception. Day Fourteen B|L|D Istanbul Disembark the ship and explore the city before checking in to the Marti Istanbul Hotel. Excursion: Inspiring Istanbul. See the glittering mosaics in Hagia Sophia, a sixthcentury Byzantine church that later became a mosque and now is a museum. Tour Sultan Ahmet I’s 17th-century Blue Mosque, renowned for the blue Iznik tiles adorning its interior. Wander through Topkapi Palace, residence of Ottoman sultans for 400 years. Independent Exploration: The afternoon is at leisure. Day Fifteen B Istanbul Excursion: Profound Moments. Tour Süleymaniye Mosque, which crowns one of Istanbul’s seven hills. Imperial architect Mimar Sinan combined space and tranquility into one expression of 16th-century Ottoman culture. See Byzantine mosaics and frescoes in the Church of St. Savior in Chora. Independent Exploration: The afternoon is at leisure. Day Sixteen B Depart for the Istanbul airport and the return flight to your gateway city.A NOTE: Itinerary sequence and/or scheduled events may change. Some included sightseeing itineraries can be strenuous, therefore a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
