of Subiaco Abbey inaugurates our Monthly Speaker
Series. In this, the Year of Faith, Abbot Jerome will
present his acclaimed program on Prayer: the nature
of intercessions, methods of prayer, dealing with
problems of prayer such as distractions, and the results
of prayer in our daily lives. If you have not previously
heard Abbot Jerome, you will not want to miss this
opportunity. Refreshments, as with all our programs,
will be served.

“All Souls’” Shrine
We invite all parishioners to bring a framed picture of
a deceased loved one to be placed in front of the altar
on our shrine for the month of November. The pictures
should be in a frame no larger than a 8 x 10. Pictures
may be dropped off at the church office during business
hours (8am-4pm) by Wednesday, October 31. The
pictures should have your name, phone number and
address on them. The pictures will be placed by the
church staff on the Shrine for All Souls on November
1. Then, the pictures will need to be picked up by
November 24 & 25 in the church vestibule.

Desperate Causes
~ Holy Souls Parish’s Feast Day ~
Jude was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is
generally identified with Thaddeus, and is also
variously called Jude of James, Jude Thaddaeus, Judas
Thaddaeus or Lebbaeus. He is sometimes identified
with Jude, “brother” of Jesus, but is clearly distinguished
from Judas Iscariot, another disciple and later the
betrayer of Jesus. Ancient writers tell us that he
preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea,
Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius,
he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted
at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of
Jerusalem.

He is an author of an epistle (letter) to the Churches of
the East, particularly the Jewish converts, directed
against the heresies of the Simonians, Nicolaites, and
Gnostics. This Apostle is said to have suffered
martyrdom in Armenia, which was then subject to
Persia. The final conversion of the Armenian nation to
Christianity did not take place until the third century of
our era. Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the
Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the
whole world after His resurrection. Little else is known
of his life. Legend claims that he visited Beirut and
Edessa; possibly martyred with St. Simon in Persia.

Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his
New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should
persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult
circumstances, just as their forefathers had done
before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint of
desperate cases. We will honor St. Jude with a
temporary shrine in the front of his statue, which is
located on the south side of the church.

plague, infecting nearly every corner of our society. Its
disastrous effects are seen in sexual addiction, ruined
marriages, and shattered lives. Jeff Cavins notes that many
men struggle with pornography. With great insight, he
shows how we can fight pornography’s devastating
influence and chart a course to true Christian purity.

The Holy Souls Vocation Committee
is inviting families, individuals, and
couples to sign up for the Vocations
Chalice Program. When you sign up,
please indicate which Mass you
normally attend on the weekends. You
will be notifed in advance about which
Mass you will be presented the chalice.
When it’s your turn, the priest will
present you the Vocations Chalice
during Mass. Then you take it to your home for one week
and pray every day for vocations. Please sign up in the
vestibule of church or call Chris Friemel at 681-8228.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING
Eucharistic adoration is the act of worshiping God as He is
present in the consecrated Eucharist. Since the Last Supper, when Jesus broke the bread and distributed the wine,
saying, “This is my Body” and “This is my Blood,” Catholics have believed that the bread and wine are no longer
merely baked wheat and fermented grape juice, but the
actual living presence of the Second Person of the Trinity.
Spending time before the Blessed Sacrament, in prayer
and devotion is exactly the same as spending time before
the living God.
The Couple to Couple League of Central Arkansas offers
a series of 3 classes on Natural Family Planning (NFP)
at various locations around central Arkansas. For more

Sacrament is exposed for Adoration in the Church. Would
you like to spend an hour on Wednesdays with the Lord?
You may either sign up for a specific hour each Wednesday
(we need to be sure someone is in the church every hour
during Adoration) or just drop by for a visit. Please call the

Understanding My Value
To My Church Community

Restless Heart is the first
full-length movie about the
life of St. Augustine. Born in
North Africa, Augustine
studied
in
Carthage,
becoming an accomplished
but dissolute orator. After
converting to Manichaeism,
a guilt free religion, he was
called to the imperial court
in Milan to serve as an
opponent to the Christian
Bishop Ambrose. But when
the Empress Justina sent
imperial guards to clear
out a basilica where
Augustine’s mother, Monica,
was worshiping her constant prayers and the witness of
Ambrose won him over to Christianity. Serving in Hippo in
430 AD, Bishop Augustine urged the Roman Garrison to
negotiate with the Vandal King Genseric, but they roudly
refused. He passed up on a chance to escape on a ship
sent to rescue him by the Pope, and stayed by the side of
his people. Christian Duguay directed the film, and the
cast includes, Franco Nero, Johannes Brandup, Monica
Guerritore and Alessandro Prezosi.
Stewardship Is Not An Option
Stewardship could seem to be an optional discipline, like
choosing to be a vegetarian. But stewardship really isn’t
optional for a follower of Christ. Jesus himself, more than
once, talked about being a good “steward.” The letters of
Paul and Peter talk about this too. It’s a New Testament
word. We speak of ourselves as “children of God.” Is that a
metaphor? Are we simply saying that God treats us like
sons and daughters? But it’s not a metaphor. God doesn’t
treat us as though we were God’s sons and daughters.
God made us his sons and daughters.
If I truly am a daughter or son of God, then all the people on
earth are my brothers and sisters. If I truly am a daughter
and son of God, then everything I have comes from God. If
I truly am a daughter and son of God, then God and I are in
this together. I am a partner in the continuing co-creation
and redemption of the world. That’s why stewardship is not
optional for a follower of Christ. Stewardship is not about
raising money. It’s a whole way of life, based on the belief
that we truly are daughters and sons of God…and my life

Stewardship is not a bad word; many people think it means
raising money and shy away from it, but it’s not. Certainly,
the church cannot function without financial contributions
but if we truly understood and lived stewardship no church
would really ever have to ask for money it would be there.
Parishes that live stewardship freely provide Catholic
education for all their families; they support the poor; they
flourish and grow. There are no worries where the money
for the new roof will come from or how it will pay for the
maintenance on air conditioners, etc. Stewardship takes
trust in God, real trust in God; not just the words but the
real belief that He will take care of us. It’s not a complex
concept but it is one that requires prayer and devotion to
faith in the one that created us and gave us what we have.

Sunday, November 4 our Youth Mass will be the 10
a.m. Mass followed by lunch and our service project:
Rake and Run! We will have lunch after Mass followed
by service from noon until 2 p.m.
Spots still open for the 2013 SPRING BREAK SKI TRIP
to Breckenridge, CO. The dates are March 16-22. The
basic package cost is $675 which includes bus
transportation, some meals, condominium, ski rental (snow
board extra), and lift tickets. Lessons, required for first
time skiers, are extra. A $125 deposit holds your

Register now for the Junior High Spectacular, a Diocesan
event on Sunday, November 11. It’s from 10:45-5:30
and includes Mass. It’ll be at CTK. There will be music,
lunch, a great speaker, kids from all over Arkansas, and
there’s even a t-shirt! Cost is $35, and 7th and 8th grade
Religion students get bonus for attending! 6th Grade
students may also attend. Contact Youth Office for
registration information. Registration is due by October
22 to guarantee a t-shirt.
SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Saturdays from 2:45 to 3:45pm and Wednesdays before First
Friday from 4:30 to 5:00pm or call the church office for an
appointment.
CHURCH VISITS
The Eucharistic Chapel is open from 8am-3pm (Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday, & Friday). On Wednesday, the church and Eucharistic
Chapel are open from 9am till after the 5:30pm Mass.
Open Night at the Benedict House will be after the CHS
vs. Parkview game this Friday, October 26 from 9-11
p.m. Come to the BH and hang out with your friends, listen
to music, eat, play games, and just enjoy yourself! It’s for
7th and 8th graders, and it’s free.

Baptisms are scheduled on an individual basis. Please call
the church office for more information.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Contact the church office a minimum of six months in advance.
Our CYM fall service project will take place on Friday,
November 9, 3-5 p.m. We will rake some of the
parishioners’ yards in the neighborhood. It’s fun when you
are working with your friends!
HOSPITAL STAYS
Please call the church office if you or someone you know is in
the hospital. We want to visit you and pray for you while you
are in the hospital.
