This is the most famous quote of one of the newest Blesseds in the Church. May 25
was the beatification of Fr. Giuseppe “Pino” Puglisi. The words of Fr. Pino were not a
complaint about lazy people in his parish but rather a challenge to himself that motivated
work against odds that most others avoided.
Fr. Pino was beatified as a martyr who was killed in 1993 for his opposition to the
Mafia in Sicily. No doubt many people quietly complained about the situation of their
lives. Palermo was a city under the thumb and most people hated their lack of freedom
and control but felt powerless. And so Fr. Pino stepped forward with his question; “And
what if somebody did something?”
According to John Allen, the veteran Vatican
correspondent, Fr. Pino was “a funny, spitfire pastor.”
Never able to just accept the situation around him he
committed great effort to working with the youth of
the city. These young people needed convincing that
life could offer more than violence and intimidation,
that the mafia was not the best path to success for
their future.
Beginning in the 1960s as a young priest Fr. Pino
worked to end cycles of violence and feud. In one
town after 15 people were killed he began to walk
door to door with the gospel and speak about
forgiveness and reconciliation. Change started when
one woman said publicly that she couldn’t live unless
she forgave her son’s assassin.
For decades this priest led a revolt against mafia
members who championed their Catholic faith in public only to reject its actual meaning.
After many death threats Fr. Pino’s life came to an end on his 56th birthday. One of the
hitmen who came, and would later confess, reported the priest’s last words were, “I’ve
been expecting you.”

Prayer for Blessed Pino Puglisi

Today the neighborhood bears his mark as one finds graffiti on the walls saying,
“And what if somebody did something.”
To some it may seem that Fr. Pino’s death is just one more statistic, even a failure to
actually curb the violence, but his example offers much more. Even though he is the
one who will be beatified his effort to respond to violence was not solitary. He inspired
change around him. No doubt some of the violence continues even today but the hearts
of many were changed. By living the Gospel directly he helped bring the peace preached
by Jesus to a cycle of hatred. Souls were saved because he led them to reconciliation
instead of retaliation.
Fr. Pino did not invent the message that marked his life. Rather he took the
timeless message of the Gospel and applied it to the challenge of his day. What he
decided to do was live and preach a message of peace that many thought would fall on
deaf ears.
In our faith we have recently completed the Easter season and celebrated the
feasts of the Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Christ. Now we enter Ordinary
Time. However, given the power of what Jesus brings there is nothing ordinary about
the hope he offers. Whatever the situations of our lives the message practiced by Fr.
Pino can speak to us. It may seem that the Gospel can’t really touch the challenges that
surround us. It may seem there are too many deaf ears but rather than despair we have
the direct words of our new Blessed Pino, “And what if somebody did something?”
That something is to put into practice the message of Jesus Christ. That
something is to respond to every challenge with trust in the power of Jesus, to respond
with forgiveness even when hatred continues. As saints of every age show us peace is
possible when somebody is willing to change the cycle and let Christ work through
them.

“How can I help my parish? I work full time, have a family, my children are in sports
or music lessons and I have to drive them to practice. I never have time to volunteer.”
Does this sound familiar? We want to help, we want to volunteer but time is the problem.
Many of us don’t know what talents we have that we can offer our parish and we don’t
realize we do have time to offer as well. We also face the problem of being two career
families; trying to make ends meet, keeping the family financially afloat with children
from college age to day care. If we study our time like our money we may find that we
have more of it if we use it creatively.

We all attend mass each Saturday or Sunday and at all of our weekend masses we
need Liturgical Ministers: Ushers, Lectors, and Eucharistic Ministers. These ministries
involve our time but we are already at mass and we can give of our time in this way. There
is an occasional need for people who can bring someone to mass. This is a wonderful
service for those who can no longer drive. Other ministries where we can use help that
are not too time restrictive are greeting people as they come into mass; taking someone to
the grocery store when you go; sending a card to a new parishioner; and praying as a
member in the Ministry of Praise group. Praying for others, the sick listed in the bulletin,
is always a wonderful ministry and can be done while driving your car. These suggestions
are things that can be done either at mass, at something you were already doing or involve
very little time.
If we carefully analyze our time, we might discover that we have a host of talents
that can be of service to our parish. We need to be open to the opportunity when it
presents itself and not immediately say no because we are “too busy.”

Summer brings a long list of “To Do’s” to be completed before school resumes in
August. This summer we will squeeze in the following projects:
• Replacing the Allen Center Roof
• Repainting the interior of the Allen Center Cafeteria
• Refurbishing of the Jr. High classrooms
• Replacing 2 HVAC systems in the school
• Installing Smartboards in nine classrooms
• Re-keying the interior doors of the school and making additional security
upgrades

Thanks to the Altar Society’s funding the new tabernacle stand and baptismal font
have been completed. The work on the tabernacle stand and baptismal font was
completed because of the skills of architect Greg Peckham; Leroy Hall’s beautiful wood
working and the floor work done by the tradesmen of Inside Effects Company; all of
this together has enhanced the spiritual space for our parish.

This year’s theme is “Once a Wabbit, Always a Wabbit.” This means that while we’ll
eventually stop being Holy Souls students, we’ll never stop being wabbits.
Unforgettable memories are the foundation that supports Holy Souls. Our school
has many traditions that have been around for years and years. The graduates of the
school will have made lots of memories during their time at Holy Souls. Hopefully,
those memories will be things that we can cherish and look back on fondly. They will
stick with us when we leave, and we will be able to share them with generations of
wabbits after us. Even when we’ve moved on to the next stages of our lives, we’ll
always be wabbits and will always be members of Holy Souls.
We picked this theme for the 2012-2013 school year to remind the students that no
matter what, they’ll always be welcome at Holy Souls. Each and every one of us is a
member of the Holy Souls family.

This is the third verse of the well-known hymn Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. The
whole hymn chronicles the love of God and the transformational role of that love in
helping humanity to strive toward Christian perfection. The last line, “Lost in wonder,
love, and praise” is particularly appropriate to a discussion of the music ministry. In
today’s society, with our “go, go, go” mentality, we are almost always aware of time
passing or lists of things we need to accomplish. God calls us to be otherworldly, however.
When we attend mass, we are participating in eternity, a timeless event. When we walk
through the doors of the church, we are stepping into a completely different world. Yes,
I know that schedules still exist (and especially soccer matches and basketball games!),
but our goal at mass is to be “lost in wonder, love, and praise.” Music helps us to reach
this goal. The most important music at Holy Souls remains that which we all sing
together—the hymns and mass parts that form the core of our liturgical celebrations.
The way we achieve this singing together, however, is greatly enhanced by the various
groups that lend support to our efforts. We are trying some new ways of scheduling this
fall that may make it easier to participate in the music ministry activities for children,
and I also want to take a moment to mention of our music ministry activities for all ages.
Our Children’s Choir program is expanding this fall to include two sections of
Advanced Children’s Choir and an additional section of Beginning Children’s Choir. As
you may know, our school already has a strong children’s choir program, with all 4th
graders participating in a year of Beginning Children’s Choir during the 4th grade music
class. Students in the school are then auditioned and offered a place in the Advanced
Children’s Choir. As our Parish Religious Education has grown, a need has developed
to give children who do not attend Holy Souls School an opportunity to experience
choral singing. This past year, we began a Parish Children’s Choir that collaborated with
the Advanced School Choir to lead music for weekend masses. Interest in this group
has remained strong, which is the reason we are expanding. Our new Parish Beginning
Children’s Choir will be open to 4th and 5th graders who have not participated before in
children’s choir. After one year in this group, students will be ready to participate in the
Advanced Children’s Choir. We are also changing the structure slightly, in that there
will be two sections of Advanced Children’s Choir (on two different days of the week at
two different times). Each section will be open to both Parish and School children in 5th
through 8th grade. Students may attend either session each week—we hope that this
flexibility will accommodate complicated family schedules which include sports practices,
doctor’s appointments, music lessons, etc. Furthermore, students in the Advanced Choir
(whether Parish or School) will be eligible to participate in leading music for both the

The Resurrection Chorale is a “come when you can” group that leads music for funeral
masses. This special ministry involves showing up 30 minutes before funeral masses to
warm up and go over the music, and then leading that music at the mass. This is a great
ministry of our parish, and only involves signing up to receive a phone call to announce
funerals—there are no rehearsals!

Holy Souls Parish Handbell Choir is open to adults and high-school-aged students. It
rehearses on Monday evenings from 5:45 to 6:45 PM, and presents music at masses
about once a month. A nursery is provided for rehearsals, which begin on Monday,
August 19.

Our Parish Choir is continuing to grow. The group, which is open to adults and highschool-aged students, rehearses on Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in the church.
A nursery is provided for rehearsals, which begin on Wednesday, August 21. The group
usually leads the music for the 10:00 AM mass on Sundays, and presents high quality
liturgical music from many different time periods. For our Parish Feast Day (All Souls)
this year, we will be leading a liturgical presentation with orchestra of the Fauré Requiem
at the 4:00 PM mass on Saturday, November 2.

CYM youth had an active winter/spring. Our day of service was a wonderful success!
About 40 Jr. and Sr. high youth participated in at least one of the three different projects.
The February day began at Helping Hand where, on an off day, we organized diaper
supplies, food stocks, and clothing donations. We kept busy the three hours we were
there! Our next stop was Our House where we cleaned the grounds and surrounding
neighborhood, planted bulbs, and painted a chalk wall for the kids’ playground. God
provided a beautiful day for us to get all that done! Our final stop was the Salvation
Army where we met up with volunteers from the Men’s Club who had already prepared
200 hamburger patties (meat donated from the Butcher Shop Restaurant). They had a
grill and cooked the hamburgers plus
200 hotdogs. Many CYM youth who
were unable to participate in the day
had baked wonderful homemade
desserts which we served to around
150 homeless men, women, and
children. They people were grateful
to have the warm meal and see the
friendly faces of our youth, and our
kids seemed a lot more grateful for

to lack of interest this past year, we

to decide if and where we will go for Dance.

four hours, and if I do say so myself, the Peckhams could receive the Yard of the Month
award! I love when we are all working together, and the Church benefits as well.
As you can see from the photos, the school year has just about ended as marked by
the annual Catholic State Youth Convention. This year marked the 64th one, and over a
dozen Holy Souls youth attended. Keynote speaker Jesse Manibusan entertained and
uplifted the crowd of over 400 at the Robinson Center. We celebrated Mass and witnessed
two Diocesan signings of young men to the seminary. Shelby Davidson was installed on
the Diocesan Youth Council and joins Mary Cate Connell. The youth dressed as their
favorite Disney characters for a fun dance that followed a lovely awards banquet. We are
blessed that both Fr. Erik and Fr. Phillip attended to show support for our kids. I want to
thank Dwain Hebda who spent a great deal of time helping us create our lip dub video
we submitted for convention. We didn’t win, but we had fun!

summer including a float trip and a

in November in Indianapolis. The cost
is over $400 a person, so if you have any

The end of April 2013 marked six years since I learned that my son would not live with
us on Earth. I never imagined that my life would take the direction that it has over the last
six years. While I always wonder what life would be like if he were here with me, I am
constantly reminded that while it seemed like I was a victim at the time, I was really
chosen. It took a long time for me to see that I was chosen for something much larger than
me and my grief. It seems that with every single day that passes, I am reminded by things
both large and small.
Many of you know Sister Maria Liebeck and are familiar
with her beautiful collection of “Woman Tree Art.” Over
the past two years, she has shared her gifts with the Holy
Sews Ministry. We are so grateful for her wisdom and insight.
One of her paintings holds special meaning for me. It is
titled “Hope of the World.” It was inspired by a tree that
was damaged in an ice storm several years ago. What
remained of the tree after the damage was removed inspired
Sister Maria. She saw more than a damaged tree. She saw a
woman holding her child to heaven. I’ve often looked at
this painting and admired its beauty.
Easter Sunday was a beautiful day at my parents’ farm.
Even though it was time to return to Little Rock, I asked my
dad to drive us up to the mountain where Ryan is buried at the base of a tree. It was such
a beautiful day, and I knew the view of the farm would be gorgeous. As I sat on the rock
bench at the base of the tree, I asked my husband, Kevin, to take a picture of my parents.
I decided that it would be
fun to take a picture of him
taking a picture of them,
so that’s what I did. That
night, as I lay in bed
reviewing the events of the
weekend and the day, an
incredible image unfolded
before my eyes. It was
“Hope of the World,” and
it was right there in the
shadow of Ryan’s tree! I
love it when God gives me
these wonderful signs,
even in the shadows.
The Holy Sews Ministry continues to shine the light of God into the darkest of places.
We all watched the events of the Boston Marathon and then the explosion at the fertilizer
plant in West, Texas, with disbelief and helplessness. It was a lot to absorb in one week.
A few months ago, my friend Jodie and her family moved to Waco, Texas, for her husband’s
work. I have been sending boxes of layettes to her to minister to the local hospitals. The
staff of one of the hospitals was caring for many of the injured from the fertilizer plant
explosion. Due to the extent of the injuries, they were holding a blood drive. Jodie went

to Providence Hospital to donate blood, and while she was there, she visited with the
labor and delivery nurses about Holy Sews.
Jodie said, “Providence Medical Center in Waco is where I went for the blood
drive. I decided to take the Holy Sews layettes to Labor and Delivery while I was
there. Throughout the wake of such a tragedy in this area, all of the hospital staff was
working tirelessly to make sure that people were taken care of. The box of layettes
was embraced like I’ve never seen before. The director looked at each piece in awe
and commented that there was a mother who was in immediate need of a layette.”
The next day, I received an email from Michelle Gustafson, director of Labor and
Delivery at Providence Hospital. She wrote, “We are truly grateful for your gift and it
came at the perfect time. For several months I had been looking for small clothing and
layettes for our micro-preemies to meet the needs of our infant loss moms. God always
provides, and your gift will give dignity to our babies and provide comfort for our
mothers at their most vulnerable times. Thank you for all that you do!”
We also sent samples to a friend of mine in Orlando, Florida. She, in turn, put
them in the hands of her friend, Dawn Kesic, who is the director of a ministry called
“Cherishing the Journey.” She and I will be working together to supply hospitals in
Orlando. Dawn tells me, “I am still amazed at the beauty and love that each layette
shows! I cannot wait to offer this beautiful gift in Orlando!”
We are always looking for volunteers to cut, sew, knit and crochet! There is giving
opportunity for everyone—even as simple as tying a bow on a tiny teddy bear. Are you
