5:00 – 5:45 PM
SESSION 1A
Room 12 – 14
IQRA: Where It Began
No event is probably more impactful in changing the tide of Arab and even world history
than that solemn, auspicious moment when the Prophet (SAW) was first visited by the
Archangel Gabriel in the darkness of a remote, isolated cave. Come discover how that
one, singular, pivotal moment influenced the Meccan region in the pursuing 13 years.
Speaker:
Muzammil Siddiqi
Moderator: Zia Mahmood
5:00 – 5:45 PM
SESSION 1B
Room 9 – 10
Taha: From Darkness to Light
Perhaps no single personality from the Prophetic community endowed the new, fledgling
Muslim community with a spirit of social courage and communal identity more than
Omar (RA). Come explore the impact of that conversion on the emerging Muslim
community and the community’s relationship with the Meccan tribes.
Speaker:
Jamal Badawi
Moderator: Rashed Nizam

When the persecution of the Meccan Muslim community intensified, our Prophet

Year in Review: Strength and Honor—Today’s Headliners
Room 12 – 14
Inspiration does not always need to be found in the pages of history books. Courage,
rooted in a vision for our community and inspired by the prophetic legacy, is on display
daily in our midst. From small victories in schools, offices and neighborhoods across
the country, to individuals who challenge the prevailing image of Muslims at a national
level, we need to sing our heroic stories from the rooftops. This session will highlight
some of our heroes who have confronted our collective struggle with faith, resolve and
confidence, and who have made the headlines because of it.

Special Tribute to Our Champ the Late Muhammad Ali
“You have but one life; it soon will be past, what you do for God is all that will last”.
Muhammad Ali was an incredible boxer, a philanthropist, a social activist, and a pillar
in the African American and Muslim-American community. Although his boxing
career became a thing of the past, Muhammad Ali never left the world's spotlight. In a
time in which both Black and Muslim Americans were expected to stay quiet, he was
defiant and vocal. He provided a much needed image of Islam and Muslims during a
time in which the actions of a minority was used to represent the majority. In his life
and death, Muhammad Ali unified not only Muslims, but everyone who was touched
by his passion, honesty, and strength. Join us in a tribute to "The People's Champion",
as we celebrate his life and honor his accomplishments.
Speakers: Sherman Jackson, Lonnie Ali
PLENARY SESSION 3
8:30 – 10:30 PM
Room 12 – 14
Overcoming Adversity: Turning the Tides of Faith
The political and social challenges we confront as a minority community are not unique
in world history. Examples abound of historical predecessors who have either failed
or successfully overcome their struggles. Each of those stories has pivotal moments
that demanded the strength, resolve and unrelenting faith from its leaders and people.
No story is more relevant and more critical from world history than the story of our
Prophet’s (SAW) mission. This session will examine moments from the prophetic story
that demanded the extraordinary – not only from him but also from his followers. We
will draw inspiration from those events so we can, just like our pious predecessors, stand
and deliver and turn the tide of our present and our future.

confront our challenges.
SESSION 4A
10:00 – 10:45 AM
Solace in Supplication
Room Hall A
The foundation of our identity is our faith, which is firmly reliant on our faith in God. Our
unrelenting quest for knowledge, stalwart belief, and undoubtable experiences indicative
of providential control drive us to the realization that He is the source of success. That
unassailable belief had the Prophet (SAW) constantly turning to Allah (SWT) for
gratitude, comfort and help. Come learn the truth and power of prophetic supplications.

Room 12 – 14
Stories are powerful, not only to entertain, but also to teach, motivate, give hope and
inspire the best within us. The Qur’an is replete with stories in order for us to aspire,
emulate, connect us to our legacy, and to arouse the soul to action. Come hear the stories

Indeed, among major crises of modern times is mental and behavioral health. This
vulnerability, especially when ignored and not confronted, can lead to the amplifying
of our challenges. This session will explore the tools and resources to help confront this
disregarded epidemic.

MAIN SESSIONS 5
The following sessions will offer better understanding of current challenges and their impact on us individually
and collectively.
SESSION 5A
11:00 – 11:45 AM
The Impact of Challenges on Our Faith
Room Hall A
When we narrowly define faith as merely uttering the words of the dual testimonies,
we run the sizable risk of ignoring the impact challenges may have on our faith. The
penetration of unfettered rationalism, individualism borne of secularism, and the rise
of social sciences, all have the potential to impact our faith, undetected. This session
exposes some of the risks from these challenges, which should not be ignored.

Discussing the Current State of Imam Care
The role of an imam in the United States includes a wide range of responsibilities; and
given the growing challenges our communities face, the demands on our imams are
only increasing. Currently, there is a lack of research that explores the mental health
status of our imams, and it is imperative we understand the degree of their stresses and
ways of coping with challenges. This panel will advance discussions happening across
the nation on the impact of escalated Islamophobia, compassion fatigue, and challenges
imams face in their roles. We will also explore how to restructure the role of the imam
to ensure there is proper care of our imams.

Islamophobia: Root Causes, Effective Solutions
Room 12 – 14
Last year, Islamophobia was worse than ever, with research showing that American
Muslims are seen as suffering more discrimination than any religious, social, racial or
ethnic group. Muslims continue to grapple with hate crimes, bias-based bullying in
schools, and employment discrimination, among other challenges. But, what is causing
this growth in anti-Muslim activity? Is it a disproportionate share of negative depictions
of Muslims on the nightly news? Violent extremism by self-identifying Muslim criminals?
Foreign military interventions abroad? A multi-million-dollar industry of anti-Muslim
activists? And, equally important, what can and should American Muslims and their allies
do to overcome obstacles to realizing their constitutionally protected religious freedom?

Kashmir, The Weapons of Occupation: Rape and Mass Graves
India’s human rights violations in Kashmir are systematic, deliberate, and officially
sanctioned. Its laws grant legal immunity for any actions aimed at suppressing Kashmiri
support for self-determination. All available evidence of India’s military activities
in Kashmir indicates one thing: that the Indian forces are systematically targeting
innocent people in Kashmir—men, women and children. International NGO’s, including
Amnesty International, reported the presence of mass graves in Kashmir. More than
3,500 unmarked graves were discovered just in one town of Kupwara. These tactics
have no military justification whatsoever. Their only conceived purpose is to terrorize
a people into submission.
Speakers:
Abdalla Idris Ali, Naeem Baig
Moderator: Ghulam Nabi Fai
SESSION 7E
The Intersection of Poverty and Public Policy
For many of our organizations, combating poverty has been reduced to giving charity to
foreign nations or volunteering at soup kitchens, while the systemic effects are largely
forgotten. Public policies and systems affect many American Muslims, the criminal
justice system, and the failure to equitably fund public education that disproportionately
affects the poor and working class amongst us. While giving charity is good, changing
the status quo is better. Let’s discuss with our panel their insights to these issues.

Moderator: Ahmed Bedier
SESSION 7F
Rethinking Islamic Center Governance
As of late, many masajid have been plagued by debilitating internal conflicts about proper
governance, the role of the imam and how active Islamic centers should be, both in civic
and political engagement. Panelists will propose concrete ways to reduce this internal
toxicity that threatens the well-being of Muslim American communities. This session
will be taking a critical look at bylaws, the role of the imam, intra-masjid conflict and
understanding the legal contours.

Buried Roots: The Untold Truths About Islamic Spain
The great poet Al Shakundi once said, “Praise be to Allah Who ordained that he who
speaks with pride about Al Andalus may do so without fear and as bold as he likes, nor
meet any person who may contradict him.” During Europe’s darkest period, Al Andalus
shone brilliantly, with vast resources of knowledge and wisdom and spectacular art and
architecture. It was the world’s example of harmonious living and religious co-existence.
It is time for us to bring back the lessons of Al Andalus. How can Islam compliment
modern civilizations and support the peaceful co-existence of peoples? How can we
draw the same inspiration in our hearts that inspired the Andalusians?

Imam-Board Relations: How to Avoid a Crisis
This issue of poor Imam-Board relations, unfortunately, has led to many conflicts,
separation, and tension among leaders in numerous communities across the country.
These conflicts leave talented imams and professionals disenfranchised. They also leave
scars and divisions within communities. The fallout is that the goals of a functional
Muslim community are elusive. This session will analyze causes, and seek to address and
suggest solutions that allow communities to set sound foundations in order to create

about our lack of services and training in these areas to innovative and much-needed
programs and discussions that are turning the dial towards greater recognition and
change. From the Muhsen (Muslims Understanding and Helping Special Education
Needs) Masjid Certification Program, to MuslimGirl.com’s new push in covering
mental health to EquallyAble’s 1000 jobs for people with disabilities, to the first ever
Mental Health First Aid Training for imams, scholars and leaders — new ground is
being broken. What challenges have these initiatives faced in their push to create jobs,
training and awareness? And what are the next steps that we all can implement in our
own communities and programs in regards to disability advocacy, inclusion and mental
health issues?

IMRC SESSION
How Social Justice Can Help Minorities
There are 180 million Muslims living in India and over 120 million of them are living a
life of poverty. They face challenges similar to Muslims in America: Islamophobia along
with political and social discrimination. Often times this discrimination is institutionalized
as a way to demean and humiliate Muslims from their social justice rights and religious
identity. Guest speakers will share their insights on the culture of freedom, highlighting
the need for a cultural renaissance in the midst of hate centric nationalism. Indian
Muslim Relief and Charities (IMRC) has been working in India for more than 35
years to tackle these challenges and poverty through providing educational programs,
healthcare services, medical support, emergency relief, and legal aid. IMRC is protecting
minority rights through its social work programs, which provide justice and equality
for the current and next generation.

secular world that we live in, where self-gratification is the predominant framework for
decision-making, Muslims have the religious duty to embrace the moral and ethical
opportunities to offer an alternative framework for ourselves and America.

America is facing a great number of domestic challenges largely stemming from economic
disparity. Several Muslim community organizations have committed to help fight these
challenges. Our panelists discuss the community response to water shut-offs for Detroit
residents, police brutality against African Americans, and the toxic water given to
Flint residents. We will also explore organizations that have worked in communities
to alleviate hunger and food insecurity. Among them are SMILE for Charity, a food
pantry in Passaic NJ, as well as the Islamic Society of Portland Maine, which started a
summer feeding program. Learn how individuals and communities can work with the
USDA and other agencies to reduce food insecurity in their communities. The goal of

Preventing and Responding to Domestic Violence: Lessons from the Field
Domestic violence is a public health issue affecting Muslims at the same rate as the
national average. In the efforts to fight domestic violence over the past 15-20 years, we
have seen a turning point as Muslims have formed organizations specifically to respond
to and prevent this complex phenomenon. Our panelists provide a multidisciplinary
reflection to present a successful model of a community-based domestic violence services
organization, which highlights how it has leveraged community resources and developed
collaborative relationships with other organizations, including shelters and the court
system. Participants will also learn about best practices in educating communities, leaders

Seizing the Opportunity: Countering Anti-Muslim Rhetoric Through
Media Engagement
Increased levels of anti-Muslim rhetoric during the 2016 American presidential campaigns,
and an unfortunate closed-minded following by segments of the American public,
demonstrate the urgency for a stronger Muslim presence in media and politics. These
times are difficult for American Muslims; however, it is also an opportunity to spread the
truthful Muslim narrative to counter the current and increasing Islamophobic rhetoric.
This session offers practical and long-term solutions for how American Muslims from
all ages can be part of this process.

Flying While Muslim: When Security Screening Doesn’t Seem Random
Anymore
Seemingly, persons of Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian backgrounds
are “randomly” selected at airports for additional security screening. This typically occurs
when an individual’s name is listed in the Terrorism Screening Database (TSDB), and can
lead to highly intrusive questioning about one’s speech and conduct, which is protected
by the First Amendment. With the TSDB having ballooned to more than 1.2 million
records, ordinary citizens with no connection to terrorism are being ensnared. Join us
as attorneys and civil rights leaders discuss current litigation to protect the rights of
travelers and share strategies for persons who suspect they may be on a watch list, so
they can protect their constitutional rights of freedom of religion and speech.

and their teachers to eradicate bullying? Given the current anti-Muslim climate and the
spike in hate crimes, educational institutions are perhaps the most important places to

Family caregivers play a critical role in our health and long term care system by providing

Where There is Hope, There is Faith
“Do not be saddened and do not despair.” Despair is the devil’s opium. Trust/Hope is
the believer’s panacea. No matter what the situation, we need to have certainty that we,
and history, are in good hands. Realizing God’s complete and authoritative dominion
is a source of solace, contentment and motivation to action. Success is guaranteed. Our
three insightful and motivational speakers will call upon us to be active agents of that
success. This panel discussion will not only focus on the necessary kind of hope but also
how you can manifest that in our global world.

IMAN Central Workshop
One of the ways that IMAN has attempted to accommodate requests to share its
model has been to conduct various modules of its unique Community Organizing
Training curriculum. IMAN’s Community Organizing Training draws both from
traditional organizing concepts and strategies as well as from deep Islamic spiritual
values and prophetic wisdom. It trains individuals on the importance of building
power, forging relationships based on shared values, and learning to recognize,
identify and mobilize around self-interest.
Masjid Development Workshop (Part 1)
Creating a Welcoming, Inclusive and Dynamic Masjid This is an intensive, practical workshop for all those who are interested in pushing
masjids to the next level by creating a more dynamic masjid with more volunteers and
programs, a more inclusive masjid with more involvement of community members
especially young adults, a more welcoming masjid with a heightened sense of community
and brotherhood/sisterhood. This workshop is a portion of the full-day workshop that
ISNA is offering to masjids.

Sunday, September 4, 2016
12:00 – 1:00 • PM Room 7 • Biological Machines and Bio-Sensors: An Islamic Perspective
•Engineered Living Machines: For the last few decades, engineering has produced marvelous machines and devices.
With the increasing understanding of living cells, there are possibilities of developing biological machines where
engineering precision meets the variability of life. Can order emerge from such variability and chaos? If so, then
one can envision machines with unprecedented capabilities, including memory and learning, self-healing, and decision-making. How should such machines be viewed in light of Islamic principles?
•How a Synthesis of Biology and Electronics may Transform the World As we Know It: Today, Intel makes more
transistors per year than the number of leaves on trees in the whole world. We have made the transistors as small as
possible, making them smaller will be hard. This is when Dr. Alam discovered bioelectronics – an emerging field that
uses electronic sensors to explore biophysics and biotechnology. As he began to explore using nanobiosensors, the
book of life written in DNA, the elegant complexity of a simple bacteria, the emergence of antibacterial resistance
and the techniques to combat them, implantable electronics to monitor the vital signs and chronic symptoms. Join
in as we listen to how that has transformed his views of the world.
Speakers:
Taher Saif, Muhammad Alam (Discussant) Sohel Anwar
3:40 - 4:40 PM Room 7 • Cybersecurity and Muslim Contribution to Science
•Connecting Muslims on the Cyberspace: Academia admires the emerging cyber culture, but calls it scatter within
the believers. Muslims are increasingly associating in the virtual sphere, but the collaboration between Internet and
Islam looms unclear. Therefore, this presentation provides a roadmap of comprehensive cyber integration to dismiss
the apparent deviation. It sketches a cohesive infrastructure to encompass the disperse initiatives and incorporate
them into a shared objective. It lays out a framework based on “Diffusion of Innovation” to realize the latent possibilities in personal sphere, social matters and global affairs, and put them together towards our potential future.
•Higher Education, Scientific Development and Civilization: The Quran mentions the term ilm (knowledge) 750
times, third after Allah and Rab (Lord), which are repeated 2800 times. The importance of knowledge and education
in Islam is underlined in the very first word revealed to the Prophet (SAW) – “read.” The contributions from centuries
of Islamic scholarship and civilization are still seen and recognized today. This paper will present the role of Muslims
in the development of education and scholarship, with a particular look at the role of Muslims in scientific research
and discovery and the history of the growth of this brilliant and outstanding civilization.
Speakers:
Rasheed Rabbi, Mohammad Quasem (Discussant) Syed M. Shah

IIIT SESSIONS
Saturday, September 3, 2016
12:00 – 1:00 PM • Panel 1 • Room 21
The Fiqh of Citizenship
“The recent Marrakesh Declaration takes the “Madinan Constitution/Charter” as the point of departure and calls upon scholars
and intellectuals to develop the concept of citizenship from within Islamic thought. This call is not new; fiqh al-muwatanah
has been discussed and debated by a number of scholars in the last couple of decades, including Rashid al-Ghannushi, Taha
Jabir al-Alwani, Abdul Majid al-Najjar, and Tariq Bishri, among others. Likewise, the “Madinan Charter” has been studied
for a while now. This panel would take stock of current scholarship on these topics and propose/chart new ways in the development of fiqh al-muwatanah and notions of citizenship in contemporary Islamic thought. It would discuss the status of
minorities (Muslim minorities in the West, or non-Muslim minorities in majority Muslim countries) and what does it mean
to be a citizen — regardless of religious affiliation - in a Muslim society.”
Speakers:
Tariq Ramadan and Jasser Auda
3:30 – 4:30 PM • Panel 2 • Room 21
The Fiqh of Citizenship
Islam and Democracy: Roots and Realities
This panel will tackle the most significant issues facing Muslims today dealing with reopening the doors of religious interpretation—to correct false interpretations, replace outdated laws, and formulate new doctrines. The discussion will revolve
around Prof. Sachedina’s book “The Islamic Roots of Democratic Pluralism”, which critically analyzes Muslim teachings on
such issues as pluralism, civil society, war and peace, and violence.
Speakers:
Abdulaziz Sachedina and Amb. Ebrahim Rasool
4:45 – 5:45 PM • Panel 3 • Room 21
The Fiqh of Citizenship
Maqasid Al- Shariah as a Philosophy of Islamic Law: A Systems Approach
There is lack of consideration and functionality of the overall purposes and underlying principles of the Islamic law as a whole.
Moreover, exaggerated claims of ‘rational certainty’ (or else, ‘irrationality’) and ‘consensus of the infallible’ (or else, ‘historicity
of the scripts’) add to the lack of spirituality, intolerance, violent ideologies, suppressed freedoms, and authoritarian regimes.
Dominant methodology generally resists learning from other philosophies that did not originate from the Islamic tradition,
or else, totally adopts other philosophies that contradict with basic Islamic beliefs. These panels attempted to address these
problems based on two theories: theory of the purposes of Islamic law or Maqasid Al-Shariah, and systems theory. Maqasid
is proposed as a philosophy and fundamental methodology for assessing and developing classic and current juridical theories.
Systems theory is utilized to define a new method for analysis that relies on the systems features of cognition, wholeness,
openness, hierarchy, multi-dimensionality, and purposefulness.
Speakers:
Jasser Auda and Amb. Ebrahim Rasool

the doctrines contained in the Qur’an, providing a comprehensive explanation of their significance to individual Muslims
and the societies in which they live and surveying the key themes of the Qur’an, its most significant historical interpretations,
and some of the most significant figures who transmitted and taught the sacred scripture over the centuries. They will also
analyze influence of the Qur’an on all major aspects of Muslim society, including personal relationships, popular culture, law,
art and architecture, political movements, science, and literature.

Organ Donation and Islam
“… if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of the whole of mankind…” The Holy Qur’an (CH5, V32).
The issue of organ donation and transplantation has been a matter of great debate and dispute for many years among those
of the Muslim faith. This session is a follow up to a national Fiqh Forum titled: Reaching Consensus on Organ Donation: A
Call to the American Muslim Community. Join organ donation advocates Imam Johari Abdul-Malik and Lesley Compagnone
as they discuss the important and germane deliberations that occurred at the Forum and what it might mean for millions of
Muslim Americans. Also joining the panel are Gloria and Samuel Shareef; they already know what organ donation means to
their Muslim family. Ten years ago their daughter Danielle was killed in a car accident and they made the heroic and selfless
decision to donate her organs. Danielle saved the lives of four people that day, something that brings Gloria and Samuel
both a sense of peace and a sense of immense pride. They will share their story. This panel will examine the very real and dire
shortage of organ donors in this country, and the need to educate communities of all faiths about the opportunity for everyone
to be able to give the ultimate gift: the gift of life.

Creating a Hospitable Mosque Environment
Many mosques recognize the need to make our organizations open and hospitable to youth, women, and other segments of
our communities; however, they continue to do business as usual and they fail to translate that desire into meaningful changes
in operational practices, leadership change, and organizational commitment. This session will discuss specific strategies to
help organizations develop the culture of being hospitable. It suggests principles and tactics that translate into a positive
experience of every worshiper, guest and visitor; principles that run through the organization and flow from the top leaders
to every employee and volunteer in the organization.

Race Matters (Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative)
It has been over two years since the killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed African-American teenager who was shot and
killed by Officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, that sparked Black Lives Matter protests across the country and a much deeper
discussion into police brutality and institutionalized racism and oppression. Leaders from the Muslim Anti-Racism Collaborative will discuss with participants what anti-oppression work looks like in our communities, how we can meaningfully
engage with Black Lives Matter, and how we can build anti-racist cultures in our own Muslim communities.

Margari Hill, Blair Imani
Facilitator:

Hate Hurts
This session will discuss how Islamophobia has an impact on not only the Muslim community – but beyond. The #HateHurts
project was started by CAIR-AZ to document the endless string of hate crimes impacting Muslims, their institutions as well
as other communities who have been targeted. This also has been following the harsh upswing on the violence toward the
Sikh community, who are often perceived to be Muslims and who are becoming the victims of hate crimes on a frequent basis.
This session will feature three speakers, who are approaching this subject from very different and innovative angles. We will
discuss with participants the troubling trends that our communities are seeing, how this is impacting our communities, and
ways in which we can build solidarity among Muslims, Sikhs, Latinos and other communities of color to fight against hate.
Speakers:
Linda Sarsour, Arjun Singh Sethi
Facilitator:

the sake of Allah SWT. This session will offer insight into the convention theme, how

Expecting the Best from Our Creator
The Prophet (˜) said, “Allah the Most High said, ‘I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with
him when he mentions Me. If he mentions Me to himself, I mention him to Myself; and if he
mentions Me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly greater than it. If he draws near
to Me a hand’s length, I draw near to him an arm’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I
go to him at speed.’” (30:22).
You plan and Allah plans, and Allah is the best of planners. So how do we react when
His plan differs from ours? The first step in trusting and submitting to Allah SWTs
will is in assuming the best from Him. The nature of our prayers and requests should
all be such that when we supplicate, we expect to be answered and when we repent, we
expect to be forgiven. This session aims to shape an understanding of our creator as a
just and merciful God, to reinforce the love between creation and Creator, and to built
total trust and submission to His will.

Halal Food on Campus
A balanced diet is required for performance in all aspects of life. It is especially important
in education and sports. On many college/university campuses, meal choices do not
meet the needs of Muslim students. This means the food service provider has failed
their commitment to meet the nutritional needs of their clients, puts the student at a
disadvantage, and makes it more difficult for the college/university to recruit and retain
students. Providing zabiha meal options on campus benefits all three stakeholders.

Breaking Through the Stigma of Mental Illness
Prophet Muhammad (˜) said: “The example of the believers in their affection, mercy, and
compassion is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness

Mental illness in the Muslim community is real, and it is worthy of our attention and
compassion. This session seeks to address the stigma associated with mental illness,
eating disorders, addictions, and trauma in our Muslim community. The focus will not

As a minority community facing targeted racism as well as Islamophobic attacks, we
have the opportunity to share with society and the world our faith-based values of
service, compassion, and social justice. However, in order to do so, we must first have an
open and honest dialogue about our own understanding of oppression and whether our

Resistance: Combatting Oppression, Inspiring Action
“When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty” —Thomas Jefferson
While protests, demonstrations and marches are increasingly commonplace strategy for
fighting against systemic injustice, there is a lack of clear vision among our community to

resistance so that, while our physical presence is known in opposition to injustice, we are
