students. The University has Chapel services that are held every morning during the school week. On Wednesday night, a student led group called Praise presents a contemporary way of worshiping. During Praise, student musicians lead the congregation in worship music. Every week a speaker prepares a message to share with the rest of the student body. Worship on campus can also be found in the many student led Bible studies. There are many different types of Bible studies offered around campus, and every year new groups form. There are many different and diverse choices for students to find ways to worship God on Concordia’s campus. 3 43 WORSHIP LIFE WORSHIP LIFE 1 4 1. Ryan Shrum speaks at chapel before he graduates. 2. In a work sectional author Alyssa Satin Capucilli and illustrator Pat Schories discussed creation of the much loved Biscuit series. Alyssa said this about being an author, “We observe life and tuck it inside a book.” In another sectional, Ashley Bryan, the author and illustrator of many books, was full of energy as he taught the audience how to “find the voice the words are telling you, and become what the words ask you.” 1 The Homecoming Fair is a chance for clubs to promote themselves and for students to have the chance to interact with not only other students, but also community members and alumni. All sorts of fun activities from the giant slide to water tank dunking are available for everyone who visits campus. 2 3 4 4 4 5 1. The cheer and dance team revs up the crowd with their halftime performance. 51 2 After a fun week of pep rallies and events to raise school spirit, the Homecoming Court lined up in front of the crowd during half time. No one could guess who was going to be crowned this year. The court was made up of many individuals that were great leaders on Concordia’s campus. Emily Scott was announced Homecomming queen and Homecoming king was awarded to Micah May. Both were given the crowns as the crowd cheered their peers on. Micah May and Emily Scott congratulated each other, and received congratulations from other members of the Homecoming Court as well. After receiving their crowns and flowers, the new Homecoming king and queen went back to the stands to cheer on the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game. 3 1 Nothing describes homecoming better than having a fun and fancy time with your date or with your group of friends. From nine to twelve post meridiem males and females alike busted out moves in tune with the music and chatted with friends on the side. The first hour of the dance was not all hip-hop and country, though, as the Concordia band performed several tunes for the night. Natalie Kesar, a freshman, stated, “I thought it was a really good addition to the dance. It put in some variety.” As for when the country songs rolled out of the stereos, she added, smiling, “It was fun to see some of the really good swing dancers.” 52 3 Natalie’s enjoyment for the night was shared with others as each minute passed and each song was played. When the night ended, you could tell without a doubt everyone had a blast. The smiles on the girls’ faces from hanging out with their date or the guys’ loosened ties from partying were the easy clues. Some say the memories that they take with them from the homecoming dance is the best part of the weekend. 4 1. Emily Scott and Micah May congratulate each other on receiving the crown. 2. The entire Homecoming Court included Micah May, Aaron Kortze, Dylan Teut, Tyler Walsworth, David Minster, Heather Blomenberg, Allie Mitchell, Brianne Burrill and Emily Scott. 3. Johnathan Zeller and Kelsie Johnson swing dance at the homecoming dance. 53 3 2 Concordia’s Twelfth Night performance took place at the Seward Bandshell. This outdoor stage was a good fit for the needs of this play. It was a memorable change from the usual performances in Weller. Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night is a tale full of irony. The audience knows what is going on, but the characters know almost nothing until the very last scene when all is revealed. It is a tangled web of love interests, an epic prank, and a total confusion of twins who think the other is dead. It is full of Shakespearean humor and definitely worth watching. 4 Pirates of Penzance, written by Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert, is full of humor and romance. The story is centered on Frederic, who was a pirate’s apprentice. The Pirate King let’s him go, saying his apprenticeship is over. Ruth, the pirate’s maid, loves Frederic and goes with him to shore. Frederic has never seen another woman other than Ruth and she tells him that she is most fair. A group of young women, all of them are sisters, approach them and Frederic sees that Ruth has deceived him about her beauty. After Ruth is sent away, Frederic falls in love with Mabel, one of the young women. The two fall in love and comedic series of events involving pirates, the sisters and their father, whom is a Major General, unfolds. 2 3 4 5 1. Cayde Sprecker, Nathaniel Bellin and Martian Kois. 2. Back to front: Ryan Fiero, Josh Schultz, Austin Albers, Heather Niedfeldt, Jacob Wagner, Dorothy Avery and Heidi Niedfeldt. 3. Dorothy Avery and Heather Niedfeldt. 4. The cast was wonderful; the costumes and makeup were colorful and whimsical. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a story of mismatched lovers, of a band of amateur actors, and of the antics of fairies including an extra mischief making one named Puck. In the end, all is well. The cast did a fantastic job and left the audience wanting more. 4 The lights dim – everything is black, and the surrounding nighttime walls do nothing to help your vision. Then – suddenly – bright lights sting your eyes and you are introduced to the first act of Tartuffe in Concordia University’s black box theater. 2 3 A satirical play set in 1660 Paris about teaching a lesson, every line the characters spoke – all the way from Tartuffe himself to the ending officer – were in rhymes. Scoffs were heard and guffaws burst out at the cleverness of Moliere’s rhyme scheme and the words he put together to use them. As the lights dimmed and brightened again at the end of each act, the audience got more drawn into the play as we learned the truth behind Tartuffe’s motives and the tension building on Orgon’s actions. “When we look closer,” Professor Bryan Moore states in the Tartuffe handout, “the message itself asks us to consider not only how we observe and critique others about their faith, but also how we ourselves speak out and behave as representatives of our faith.” 5 6 1. Jacob Wagner’s character, Nick Bottom, is transformed into a donkey. 2. Elizabeth Wittig, Ruth Krc, Jordan Schultz, Bethany Noel Osberg, Heather Eden and Rebecca Wittig, sing a fairy song to lull their Queen,Titania, portrayed by Heidi Niedfeldt, to sleep. 3. The second weekend was divided into two parts. Part one included The Silent Treatment (comprised of The Waiting Room, The Seduction, and The Dream I had Last Night), A Love Story You’ve Heard Before but won’t Mind Hearing Again, Meet the Iscariots, and Boiling People in my Coffee. Part two was an hour and a half long performance called Basically Broadway. The actors sung and danced their way through over twenty songs that were in Broadway Musicals over the past ten years. This year during Spring Break the theater department toured the Midwest. They travelled from state to state and saw at least one performance each day. They were able to interact with and observe how professionals performed. It gave them the opportunity to see the different venues of the performing arts going on in the world of theater today. 2 3 4 4 5 1. Tory Petz in Boiling People in My Coffee. 2. Through partnering with a local youth soccer club in Lincoln, the team was able to take over 300 lbs of soccer aid and gear that they delivered to an orphanage where over ninety children and youth will be able to use it. They played soccer and shared their faith with the children at the Verbo Orphanage (Managua, Nicaragua) Before playing they were two groups of strangers playing against each other and speaking two different languages, after the game they were one massive group of passionate soccer players using the language of the game to realize that there are really very few differences between them. 1 Professors Lynn Soloway and Bruce Creed, along with 20 Concordia students, travelled to France on their summer study tour. The group brushed up on their WWII history in Normandy, experienced the inspiration for Monet’s water lily painting at Giverny, and soaked up the unfathomable wonders of the Louvre Museum. The girls were also blessed to make a quick connection with the local church that drove once a day into the community to deliver a meal to many children. They spent much of their time interacting with locals and experiencing their culture. 4 5 1. Jordan Donohoue and the team play against the children at an orphanage. 2. They went to Spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ by serving the people of Guatemala. They were able to help stock the pharmacies at the three clinics that they helped run. While the doctors and PA were seeing the patients, the students took blood pressure and temperature, and helped distribute the hygiene kits that they put together. Other than the health clinic they performed a community health assessment, in the mountain community of La Avanzada, that will help identify the specific needs of that community for future teams who come to serve. God blessed the trip by forming new relationships with the people in Guatemala, and with successful medical clinics that gave people some relief from their illnesses and showed them the love of Jesus Christ. 4 5 1. STUDY TOURS STUDY TOURS 1 3 2 Walking into the entrance of the gallery, an individual can become absorbed and transfixed by the dedication and uniqueness put into each and every art form. “I’m at a loss for words right now,” comments Alyssa Wilson, a freshman and art student herself, when asked about the display of works. Her statement worked for others, too, as many could be seen in groups studying one particular piece of art. Even if art is not your thing, viewing it is a whole other concept. From a tower of measuring tools to a picture of unknown origin, the job of an artist is well done by making us look at the deeper meaning of things used or seen in our everyday lives. The Marxhausen Gallery also hosts student work. Each semester senior artists may display their work, and at the end of the year there is the annual Student Art Show. 4 5 1. Even with these fears, many students participated in one of several blood drives that happened in the old gym this year. Five different stations provided medical information and assisted in the registration process. Johnathan Cline, a senior, used his stress ball to help relieve his fear of needles. Sydney Reich, a freshman, commented on her donation that afternoon; “It was a good process. The first time I tried to give blood was in New Orleans,” she reminisces. “My iron level in my blood was too low, so I could not donate, which was disappointing. When I tried again at Concordia’s previous drive, it was too low again. I’m real happy that it worked out this time.” All who donated knew that by giving a bit of their blood, they could be saving a life. CASE is an organization provided for education majors at Concordia University. The group members of case get together and discuss their future careers as teachers. “CASE provides Concordia’s education majors with an opportunity to learn more about issues relating to their future classrooms that they might not hear about in their college classes. Our meetings have covered topics ranging from field trips to teaching overseas, from student teaching to identifying child abuse. I think that it is a great place to learn, to ask questions, and to hang out with amazing people. Plus we get to have awesome parties at Dr. Kromminga’s house, which are always a ton of fun!” said Junior Hannah Kroonblawd. 2 3 4 1. Connie Kettner is excited to give blood. 2. Concordia students facilitate weekend events where they gather for games, devotions and other events that praise the Lord. This year alone CYM hosted over twenty lock-ins. Curtain Club is for any student who is interested in theater. Members of Curtain Club are involved in the many varieties of productions over the year including One Acts, two major productions that are put on yearly, IMPROVables, and any student lead productions. 1 4 3 5 6 1. The team traveled regionally and nationally, regularly attending tournaments through the National Parliamentary Debate Association, National Forensics Association, American Forensics Association and National Christian College Forensics Association National Tournaments. In the fall, Concordia co-hosted the Nebraska Double Up with Creighton University in Omaha, and in the spring, Concordia hosted the Sleet and Snow tournament here in Seward. In addition to competing, the Forensics team also hosted multiple high school competitions and tournaments on campus this year. This year the team finished in the top five for the competition at National Christian College Forensics Association Tournament. Six years after Hurricane Katrina hit the southern coast of the United States, areas such as Mississippi and Louisiana are still recovering from the devastation caused by the hurricane. At the conference many missionaries gathered to share stories hoping to impact and inspire future missionaries, or anyone interested in mission opportunities. Some of the areas throughout the world that were represented were Asia and Turkey. Emily Ptacek, a member this year, said that the primary purpose of Mission Minded is to “Promote missions, to support individual and group mission trips networking with missionary and mission agencies.” Mission Minded members share their Christian love with communities while building leadership qualities and providing students on campus with educational opportunities. 3 1. It was meaningful.” 92 1 2 Ongoing Ambassadors for Christ, also known as OAFC, is a student-led group here on campus. This year’s lead professor was Professor Groth, and student leader was Rachel Brainerd. The group met for monthly meetings in Janzow Top. They discussed world news and current events, organized upcoming activities, sang and worshiped together as well as shared devotionals. Rather than having just a Bible study where one person talks, they go around, each reading a verse and explaining to the rest of the group what they think each individual verse meant within context. Doing this helps them grow together in their relationship with Christ through the holy Word and fellowship. The group is very warm and welcome and invites all newcomers to meet and worship with them. Activities that the group does throughout the school year include: a trip to Rising City for a weekend to spread the word of the Lord, visits to local nursing homes, movie nights and weekend pot lucks, just to name a few. Their biggest activity this year was their Spring Break Travel Team where they as a group knocked on doors, visited churches and care centers to spread the gospel. 3 OAFC MISSION MINDED 1 4 1. On Sunday, April 3, 2011, Pi Kappa Delta and Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honorary, held their annual induction ceremony. After inducting its new members, the group held a reception and social after which representatives of the organization assisted Dave Ryan of Aramark in a litter pick-up. 4 1 2 3 Sigma Tau Delta (STD) is a national collegiate honors society for students studying English. Other than putting more focus on their English studies, STD is the host at the events and activities of the Banned Books Week event, the spring and fall book drives, and Potpourri, Concordia’s annual student writing publication. During the Banned Book Week STD members went about their daily activities dressed up as characters from various banned books. That very evening, a speed book review told the audiences about ideas and philosophies restricted over the years. Potpourri encourages students to submit up to four works of poetry, a short story, and one piece of creative non-fiction for a chance to get their work published throughout the campus. Each work is judged anonymously by professors, Sigma Tau Delta members, and select students. The current president of STD, Rachel Boylan, said, “You don’t even have to be a member to participate; you just have to have a passion for English and show up!” 5 1. The crowd met in Weller and followed Jesus (played by Tyler Walworth) through his journey of Holy Week. The audience was led to various areas on campus to watch certain events take place. The crowd was asked to participate and act as though they were actually following Jesus. The night’s events ended at the outdoor chapel where the crowd followed Jesus to his crucifixion. The crowd sat and reflected while the song, Were You There was sung. Way of the Cross was an excellent time to reflect upon the true meaning of Easter. 2 3 3 1. The members of RACE provide an environment that welcomes questions, struggles, challenges and differing viewpoints and experiences without judgment. This year they hosted several events such as a speaker for Black History Month. They also paired up with Unfading Beauty for the month of March to celebrate contributions that women have made to Concordia’s campus. The first event celebrated female students on campus, and the second event celebrated the history of women’s athletics on campus. 4 1 The Student Activities Council hosted several events such as free movie nights, costume bowl as well as a dance each semester. According to SAC members, free movie nights are one of the most popular events, and this one was no exception. SAC rented the Rivoli theater for the evening to show “Despicable Me,” an animated children’s movie as well as “TRON.” In October friends got together and formed groups to participate in Concordia’s Costume Bowl. SAC organized this event and presented prizes for the most creative costumes. This year’s winners were the stunning girls that dressed up as each month of the year. These calendar girls brought home the prize title for the competition. The costumes and excitement of the night only goes to show how much fun the students of Concordia can have in competition and creativity. 2 SAC RACE 2 3 4 5 5 1. SIFE also runs the 10:31 Coffee Shop located in upper Janzow. 4 1 Concordia’s Student Senate is the governing organization for the student body. Every Monday night, the group members get together with club and dorm representatives to decide what needs to be done on campus in the interest of all of the students. Some of the things that Student Senate did this year include building a new sand volleyball pit along with a fully furnished deck for students to use on warm days or between classes. 2 3 5 1.
