December 2013 - Bayview Yacht Club
October 2013
Message from the Commodore
I had an unexpected moment of appreciation
last month at Bayview when I saw the audience
that turned out to watch the America’s Cup finals
on the big screen in our Mackinac Room and
heard about so many of our members traveling
to San Francisco to experience it firsthand.
It wasn’t surprising that our members were
following one of sport’s most storied competitions.
We sailors appreciate the tradition and level of
competition involved in the event. What caught
me off guard was the renewed enthusiasm
for our sport, our collective appreciation that
audiences outside of clubs were watching sailing
on network television and a genuine realization
of the heroic effort the American team put into
the successful comeback.
I respect the varying opinions about the
boat selection, budget levels and politics of the
event. But what I can’t help but find amazing is
the unexpected results. I can’t help but wonder:
what’s next? The AC has gone through so many
changes. Not all of them have direct application
to, say, our junior fleet or Tuesday night races.
But the ability of the “oldest trophy in sport” to
adapt to technological advances, embrace the
need for media coverage, bring together sailors
from around the globe and still offer unparalleled
spectatorship is something we should all be able
to appreciate.
From there, I bring things closer to home.
With boats on cradles, leaves changing color,
daylight hours shrinking and the nights growing
colder, we are truly nearing the end of the 2013
season. One of our signature fall events, the
Alumni Regatta, was a huge success. I offer a
big thanks to Nathan Hollerbach and his team
of volunteers for organizing it. The first-ever
pig roast in conjunction with the regatta was a
perfect addition by the club.
Also this fall, we have Bayview’s annual
election upon us with a great slate of candidates
for all the positions. Watch for the candidate
mailer. I urge you to familiarize yourself with
each of the men running and consider their
experience, accomplishments and ideas for the
club before casting your vote.
I hope to see many of you at the DRYA
Awards in November where our members collect
a good share of the proverbial silver. And if
not there, I’m sure I’ll see you still at Bayview
before the holidays (Don’t forget to book your
party with the BYC office!) There are a few good
days of fall sailing left in the season before haul
out and winter storage. I’m excited that “mast
up” storage has been adopted by the Board of
Governors this year. I hope this new policy makes

Well here we are fully into the fall season
and the holidays are just around the corner. This
time of year is my favorite for multiple reasons.
I love the cool weather and turning of the leaves
and all the wonderful foods that are never better
than during the fall season. We are using a lot
of these items in various ways on the menu and
in our daily specials which has received much
positive feedback.
With Thanksgiving just a couple of weeks
away, I wanted to make sure you were all aware
of a few things coming up. As in the past, we
are once again going to be doing Thanksgiving
Dinner To-Go for parties of any size. Dinners
will be available to be picked up between noon
and 9:00pm on Wednesday November 20th. It is
a full Thanksgiving feast that will be sure to leave
your family stuffed to the gills in time for the Lions
game. So call now and place your order with the
office, or email us at [email protected].
BYC vs. BGC CHALLENGE
Sunday, November 24, 2013 1:00pm
Birmingham Gun Club
Thanks to Commodore Kent Colpaert, Past Commodore Bruce
Burton and BGC President Rocky for making this fun challenge
happen between both clubs!!
This challenge will take place on Sunday, November 24 at 1p.m.
at the Birmingham Gun Club. Please let me know via email
([email protected]) if you are interested in participating by
November 1st. BGC opens at 11am and they offered to let us come
in at noon to practice and have lunch there.
The plan is as follows:
• We will pick the top 5 scores from each club, we/they won’t select
the top five shooters/best, this way everyone gets to shoot and we
keep it fun.
• The tournament: Both teams will shoot 50 birds at BGC, then the
top five from each club (as determined by the Nov 24th shoot) will
shoot 50 birds later in the year at BYC (date to be determined).
• The Birmingham Gun Club has purchased a fine crystal trophy as
a challenge cup between BYC and BGC.
• That way we reciprocate to BGC and have activity at both clubs.

Also this season’s first cooking class is going
to be on Wednesday November 6th at 6:00pm.
“Your mother was right: Breakfast really is the
most important meal of the day.” Why not learn to
make it taste a little better and get a new twist on
cooking breakfast with Chef Steve. This is going
to be a fun and informative “class” that will be
sure to spark a few creative ideas for taking your
normal breakfast routine to the next level.
I would like to thank everyone who came out
last month to try some of the Bluefin Tuna that I
was able to bring in on a very limited scale. The
response from everyone was fantastic and really
got me excited to try out some other specialty items
coming up here soon. I look forward to seeing
everyone around the club and all the events that
the holiday season has to offer here at Bayview.
See you soon!
