Judge’s Critique - Lotus Tutton
I would like to thank the Airedale Terrier Club of
Canada for giving me the opportunity of judging the
specialty May 19, 2002, and for the lovely hospitality
basket.
It was very pleasing and interesting to note the vast
improvements in grooming and presentation displayed
by some of the exhibitors and I must comment on the
pleasant attitude of all of the exhibitors.
My comments on the winners will be very general as
the entries were very varied in type and therefore
impossible to pick similar type.
Best Puppy In Breed - A lovely young bitch who shows
a lot of promise
Winners Bitch - A pretty bitch in good condition, presented very well, who showed very well
King’s Herald Summer 2002
5•
Best Opposite Sex & Best Canadian Bred - A very feminine
elegant bitch presenting a picture that made me smile
scary place, especially when one comes from a little town,
population 5000.
Best of Breed, Best of Winners & Winners Dog - An
Airedale that is “all dog”, very masculine with great attitude,
who moved well and was in “hard” condition. He showed
extremely well, never letting down, I could not deny him.
Once again many thanks, it was a joy to judge your puppies.
My general impression was that many of the dogs
appeared to be tired and too many lacked hard muscle
tone. My belief is that Airedales should be athletic under
beautiful coats, and when examined, their bodies should
be hard and muscular, not soft and mushy or too thin either.
They should stand up on their toes and appear to be “on
the ready”. Some filled the bill, but unfortunately, some did
not.
I am very appreciative of the amount of work that goes
into conditioning an Airedale. Please remember they not
only have to look great, they have to feel great.
I enjoyed my time in the ring with the breed that is my
first love. Thank you again.
Lotus Tutton

Judge’s Critique - Carole Kane
Best in Sweepstakes (Ingle Valley Luminous Motion). This
smartly turned out young show girl impressed me with her
irresistible personality and style. Excellent top- line, correct
tail set, short back and nice reach of neck were her strong
points. Elegant of stance and filled with Terrier expression,
she had magnificent ring presence, A real showgirl!
Best of Opposite (Paradym’s Got Game) A handsome fellow, well balanced, compact, strong with good body structure and excellent movement. Very sound in type with a
nice long head. A masculine male, very hard to fault, one to
watch in the future.
Please convey to your members my sincere thanks for the
outstanding hospitality accorded me as your Sweepstake
judge at our National Specialty 2002.
It was pure pleasure seeing all the wonderful puppies so
beautifully presented, I think it safe to say our breed is in
great shape.
A special thanks to John Ross, who was brave enough to
undertake the task of ring stewarting for me.
And, last but by no means least a huge thanks to you
Elaine for taking such good care of me every waking
moment. And, to Debbie and Bill for being there when I
needed them most, that Toronto Pearson Airport is one
Sincerely
Carole Kane

ATCC NATIONAL SPECIALTY 2002
KITCHENER WATERLOO
MAY 18 - 20,2002
Another great ATCC specialty into the records.
A very busy weekend with five shows in three days plus
puppy sweeps. There was the regular KW show each of the
three days plus the Terrier Specialty on Saturday and the
Airedale Specialty on Sunday. In addition of course was the
ATCC dinner on Saturday night and the ATCC annual general meeting on Sunday afternoon
This was the second year the ATCC Specialty has been
held at Kitchener
in conjunction with the Kitchener Waterloo Kennel Club
Shows and the Terrier Breeders Specialty show.
Thankfully all the rings were indoors as the weather despite
the date, was not spring like with snow flakes on Sunday
coming down on a cold north wind. Had the rings been outdoors, we’d all have frozen.
The same venue as last year which went so well, but this
year the annual dinner was held in the local host hotel as
opposed to the show facility.
This major innovation cost slightly more but provided a fully
catered buffet first class meal that eliminated much work.
The result was well received.
A hospitality and grooming area had been reserved for the
Airedalers this year making for a convenient and friendly
experience for all involved. The ATCC banner was set up
along with a handy tent shelter to identify the hospitality
table which provided complimentary coffee and pastry
goodies donated by Ellie and John Voortman.
The Specialty Judge was ATCC Past President Lotus
Tutton and the Sweepstakes Judge was ATCC member
and regional director, Carole Kane from the Maritimes.
OBEDIENCE BOOSTER RESULTS
Unfortunately there were no qualifying Airedale entries this
year in the booster event under the KW Obedience Trials.

The Specialty Dinner at the Holiday Inn Saturday night was
well attended by over fifty with three of our Past Presidents
Henk Bennink, Ron Dittner and Ken MacLaren, along with
their spouses on hand. A number of our US visitors were
also seen enjoying the auctions and draws. Kelly Wood’s
paper mache oversized Airedale Max greeted all on entry
at the door and festive centres pieces were at each table.
After the great buffet dinner, Roy Aitchison handled the
three auctions of Airedale memorabilia, the verbal auction,
silent auction and the chinese auction, Successful bidders
ended up contributing over $1800 to the general coffers.
Many thanks are due to all who helped assemble the items
and organize the auctions.
On Sunday, after the Airedale Specialty Best of Breed decision and trophy presentations along with the photographs,
the annual general meeting was held in one of the centre’s
meeting rooms. Wine and cheese offerings were on hand
to ease the pangs of hunger and thirst while the business
was conducted and the transfer of presidential chair to
Elaine took place. Award certificates for title winners in
2001 were prepared for some 35 members and were distributed to those present at the meeting.
As show chair, Elaine Zemaitis put together another wonderful production this year and had everything running very
smoothly through the whole weekend. She had everything
very well organized with a large crew of recruited member
helpers who looked after the many tasks involved in getting
it together. Look at the list of helpers and see how many
there were. Thanks to them all for their time, efforts and
material contributions in making this ATCC Specialty again
one to be remembered.

Canadian National Floating Specialty
Calgary, Alberta
August 3, 2002
The term “Floating” Specialty took on a whole new meaning
in Calgary this year as a number of us thought we would
surely float away in any one of the number of monsoons
experienced over the weekend. We had record high temperatures throughout July and just when we get serious about a
4-day dog show, the heavens opened. The All Terrier
Specialty held on Friday was virtually in the pouring rain.
Most of us – humans and Airedales alike - arrived home from
the show that day soaked to the skin. Unfortunately in
Calgary when it rains, it gets very cold. There was even
snow in areas surrounding the city on the Friday morning of
the show. So much for ‘Sunny Alberta’!
We were lucky on the day of our Specialty as the rain
stopped for our events and our dogs enjoyed showing in the
cool air. The weather even cooperated for the obedience trials in the morning, with a few diehard spectators huddled in
warm sweaters, rain jackets, rubber boots and gloves. The
rain also held off for the afternoon Sweepstakes and
Specialty classes.
Our obedience judge in the morning was Joey Farrell from
Thunder Bay, Ontario. Joey was in Calgary judging obedience and field trials for the Flat Coat Retriever Specialty and
kindly agreed to judge our Airedales. She has a soft spot for
Airedales as her brother has owned Airedales and she has a
great deal of respect for those who do obedience with them.
We had an entry of 8 Airedales. Unfortunately Louise
Chady’s dog was in season and was scratched from the
events she was entered in. The obedience star of our
Specialty was Nightsun Moonshadow – owned by Don & Lee
White of Edmonton and bred by Yvan Mongeon of Nightsun
kennels. Don put on quite a show and walked away with all
of the obedience prizes. We also had a contingent of veterans showing in obedience and they did a very credible job of
going through their paces.
The Sweepstakes was judged by Shirley Canfield, a
renowned Cairn breeder. Shirley had 11 dogs to judge in the
Sweepstakes. She spent considerable time going over each
dog and putting all of them through their paces. Winning the
Sweeps was Shawndee Flying Scotsman, owned by Carol
Robson and Linda Smith of Winnipeg.
Our Specialty Show with an entry of 26, followed immediately and was judged by Bernard Esporite of North Canton,
Ohio. Considering the weather, we had an enthusiastic
bunch of exhibitors, owners, handlers and onlookers. The
winner of the day was Am/Can Ch Indus Just Mad About
Harry owned by Joanne Helm of Calgary and Ken Germain
of Superior, Colorado. Best of Opposite Sex went to Ch
Northcote’s Madam Justice, owned by Terri Alloway of King
City, Ontario. Winner’s Dog was won by Shawndee Flying
Scotsman, owned by Carol Robson and Linda Smith of
Winnipeg. Best of Winners and Best Puppy was awarded to
Ch Winsea’s Rebel Angel and Award of Merit was presented
to Am/Can Ch Winsea’s Calypso, both bred and owned by
Helen Arnold of Calgary. In the non-regular classes, Am/Can
13 •
Ch Cooleamber Brickberry Special kicked up his heels,
happy to be in the ring again and won Best Veteran. Am/Can
Ch Terydale HK King of Indus and his offspring won the Sire
and Get class.
All of the participants went home with bags of goodies,
prizes, rosettes, we hope good memories and, of course, wet
shoes!
Our Show Secretary did an outstanding job of handling all of
the paper work, ring stewards for both obedience and conformation, and kept us up to speed with the obligations the
local committee had to fulfil before, during and after the show.
Although the weather wasn’t conducive to visiting, hospitality
at the Club tent was ongoing throughout the weekend thanks
to Andrea Easton and her group of volunteers. Our Bar-B-Q,
held at my home was a little more crowded indoors than it
would have been if the sun god had cooperated, but we had
lots of good food and fun and the live auction went very well.
On Sunday, our all Airedale agility team, the Aire Cadets, put
on the noon hour entertainment at the show – and entertainment it was! We had the usual show offs who stopped to visit
with the ringside crowd. About 10 of us participated and Jon
Helm did an excellent job of announcing the event. Our Aire
Cadets organizer, Lynn Jenkins, did a great job of organizing
the team, arranging our training with Noel Duruisseau of
Paw-Z-Traks, encouraging participants from Calgary,
Edmonton and Didsbury in Alberta and White City,
Saskatchewan. Our dogs had a lot of fun, the handlers
weren’t too embarrassed, and the crowd loved it!
The Calgary group would like to thank all of those who helped
make this weekend such a success. An incredible amount of
work goes into putting on specialty from the initial organization to setting up tents and organizing hospitality, prizes, etc
Thanks to all the exhibitors from Quebec to British Columbia
who entered our show
Thanks to our show committee for organizing everything from
coffee and goodies, a first-class catalogue, great prizes,
some wonderful, hard-to-get and original silent auction items,
great entertainment, etc.
Thanks to John & Lory Ross for attending the Specialty as
representatives of our National Club
Thanks to those in Ontario for their generous support of our
silent auction
Thanks to many fellow Airedale lovers south of the border for
supporting us through prize and auction donations
Thanks to the following for their donations to our prizes, silent
auction and their generous support through volunteer efforts

Report of ATCC August Booster held August 11, 2002
at TRIO Kennel and Obedience Club Ltd.
An entry of 10 Airedale Terriers made the day exciting and fun, it was
extremely hot and most of the Airedales and all of the handlers, would
have preferred being at home with air conditioning rather then being out
under the hot sun. One or two of the Airedales showed good sense by
wanting to stay under the tent in the shade rather then “Go Around” for
the judge. Thankfully there was a slight breeze which brought some
relief.
The judging table looked impressive, with the club medallions as “keeper trophies” in place, John Ross Vice President of the club handled that
chore.
Our judge, Mr. Jack Kearly of Nova Scotia, awarded Best of Breed to Ch.
Northcote’s Madam Justice, Breeder: Terry Alloway and Esther
O’Connor, by Ch.Kingaire Northcote Iceman ex Ch Northcote No More

In the Obedience rings OTCHX Kingaire’s Burnt Toast AGI, and best
friend Sheena McKeegan took top Airedale Terrier honors earning HQS
in Open and HQS Airedale Terrier in Trial, well done Sheena and Toast.
Toast was breed by Esther and David O’Connor, by Ch Lord Robin of
Kingaire ex Woodales Narration at Kingaire. Presentation of “keeper trophies” the bronzed medallions was made by Obedience Trial Chair
Debbie Adkinson.
Sheena is trialing Toast in earnest this year, Toast is amassing points
galore, they hope to make it to the top ten obedience dogs in 2002. We
wish them every success.
The announced general meeting of the club did not take place, it was
cancelled due to illness. It is planned to hold the next general meeting of
the ATCC at Fun day a notice of meeting date and place will be mailed
to all members once it is prepared.

Red River Terrier Specialty
Following the Calgary Specialty weekend a number of
us made the trek across the prairies to Winnipeg for the
Red River Terrier Specialty and MCA show. The hospitality was great, as usual, and there was a good entry of
Airedales in both conformation and obedience. As a matter of fact, Kathleen Sweeny (Eden’s Wintergreen) and
Deborah Peartree (Redcoat Charlie Navarre) from
Minnesota and Mary Barker (Imprimis Explore) came for
the obedience competition and they were very successful. On Saturday, joined by Judy Partridge (Ch
Shawndee Bailey of Ridgedale CD) of Falcon Lake, the
Airedales all qualified in their respective classes, and
were the only dogs to do so that day. Even the judge
commented on this feat! At the MCA show held in
Winnipeg, Carol Robson’s Ch Contraire Trip to
Shawndee took a Group 1st under Judge Karsten
Kaemling and Helen Arnold’s Ch Winsea’s Calypso, took
Group 2nd under both Jean Beach and John Rowton.

join us in our leaky tent and our friendship began. We had had a litter of nine
pups and had held two back - one being our precious Dundee and the other
was Poppy.
Carol and I spent many happy hours in the back yard or basement as she
learned how to strip the red grizzle coat - not an easy task! She handled
Poppy in a couple of conformations shows before turning to obedience.
Carol easily finished Poppy’s Canadian CD title and had the only qualifying
Airedale at the ATCA national specialty in Pennsylvania, USA in 1996. She
went on to train her through the open level, but didn’t compete, as she
thought Poppy was no longer enjoying the routine.
Poppy was Carol’s constant companion and special intuitive friend. She died
suddenly during one of her favorite early morning romps with Carol.

Am/Can Ch Buckshot M.J.’s Smooth of Traymar
(Ch M J’s Stone Ridge Chosen One x
Ch Traymar Love’s Helluva Showgirl)
Owned by April Adams; bred by RK and
SP Gilbert, Margo Dupre and Ken Wall
Carlos was born on Montgomery day in 1999 and whelped by Margo
Dupre’s son, Danny. From the beginning, April was interested in the
bloodlines and let the breeders know that she would like the pick male
from the litter if they were willing to part with him. After exchanging many
pictures, April finally met Carlos in person at the Buffalo shows in
February of 2000. At 4-1/2 months old, Carlos went home with April following the Hunting Working trials at the end of March. Carlos came into
April’s life at a difficult time and they became very special friends, forming a deep bond. At his first “get acquainted with shows” on the Memorial
Day weekend, Carlos earned his first two majors. He went on to receive
three more majors from the puppy classes, winning the Breed with his
last major and going on to a Group 1. His show career, though short was
stellar, with a number of sweepstakes wins and an Award of Merit at
Montgomery County in 2001. Carlos won the Airedale Terrier Club of
Canada Specialty and received his Canadian Championship at the
Kitchener-Waterloo weekend in May 2002.
He was a special dog and will be greatly missed.

Regional Reports
WESTERN REPORT
As I write this Western report, it is hard to believe that September 2002
is almost over. But the nice yellow leafs tell the story. The 2002 show
season has been a good one for many Airedales from the Prairies. For
the first time in a long time the No.1 Airedale and maybe the No.1 Terrier
for 2002 could be from Alberta! The jewel of this show season has to be
our Calgary ATCC National Floating Specialty. ATCC Vice President
John Ross and Lorie Ross were out from Ontario for a Western vacation
and the Floating Specialty. Always nice to meet up with John and Lorie.
Congratulations to all those that entered and all the great volunteers that
took time to bring it together and in some cases worked at it for over a
year to make it the success it turned out to be.
As the Obedience Chairman I have high praise for Judge Dr. Joey Farrell
from Thunder Bay Ontario. Dr. Farrell put all the competitors at ease with
her great smile and easy going nature. It could be that she has a soft
spot in her heart for Airedales since her brother owned one. For the rest
of the show Specialty wins and report I shall leave that to Pam Sheane
and Helen Arnold.
I would like to touch on a different side of putting on a Breed Specialty.
Having been involved with the Edmonton Kennel Club (EKC), an all
breed club, for close to twenty years, I have heard many great dogs stories from old timers about how Terriers were very popular in Alberta from
1911 through 1930. About the camaraderie and yes, the strong competitive spirits present at that time. Lots of good times to socialize and make
new friends at dog shows, from the sounds of the stories. This year's
Airedale Floating Specialty reminded me of those great shows of the
1920's. I went through the EKC archives to see what our breed's popularity was back in the good old days. Here is an example, the earliest
EKC dog show catalogue available is dated July 16,17,18 1924 and indicated a total entry of 153 dogs. Entry fees were $1.00. There was an
entry of 10 Airedale Terriers.
Where am I going with this short trip to memory lane? Well, it will always
warm my heart to know that past and future decades of Airedale lovers
will do their best to be great caretakers of the breed. Our 2002 Calgary
Airedale Specialty did achieved this, from the ATCC members making
sure that the public stopping at the hospitality tent were well informed on
the breed, had all their questions on the breed answered correctly, companions dogs trying their paws at agility for the first time, new faces trying conformation for the first time, great entries in obedience.
The legendary Saturday Night BBQ at Helen's place was superb. At the
show grounds Don Fance & Andrea Easton and the hospitality crew kept
every one well fed. The cold weather kept the coffee man very busy. Don
did a great job as the Chairman, keeping everything running smoothly.
Special Salute to Rory Sutton, chief engineer, who made the Thursday
night set-up a fun place to be, putting up all those big tents. Pam Sheane,
thank you for your hard work and patience with the catalogue design &
layout. Many donations came through due to the effort of Trophy/Fund
raiser Joanne Helm. All items went for big $$$$ thanks to Auctioneer
Extraordinaire Mr. Jon Helm, great job! To the Show Coordinator Helen
Arnold, who must have the determination and energy of a true Terrier,
many thanks for your time. Special thanks to my wife Louise Chady for
her help and understanding.
Hats off to all the fine people that choose to make time to have it happen
19 •
and turning it into a great success. Also un gros Merci to all our sponsors
and supporters - the two auctions where a success. The raffle winner of
that nice collapsible kennel that every one was hoping to get, was won
by Mr. Don White, also winner of the obedience HIT. Don is from
Edmonton.
Now on with the planning of the 2003 Calgary ATCC National Specialty!
Plan to come, it will be a good one.

Some Paradym news:
I was happy to see a daughter of Jay (Ch. Oakrun's Blue Jay Of
Paradym) finish her American Championship on the Canfield, OH specialty weekend early August. "Rose", aka. new Am. Ch. Greenfield
Honeysuckle Rose won her final of 3 majors there and went Reserve at
both specialties. Her litter brother "Bandit", New. Am. Ch. Greenfield
Masked Marvel, had finished earlier in the year, also on a specialty weekend.
In Ontario, I have been showing "Amber", Paradym Diamonds Diamonds
(Ch. Highpoint's Dakota x Ch. Paradym Double Diamond) and she has
done really well, beating Specials competition a few times for the breed
and has placed twice in group competition. She needs just a single point
to finish her Championship.
Ch. Paradym Chasing The Blues, "Cassie", has just been bred to a
young male of Janet Framke's breeding, Stone Ridge Gallahadion.
Hopefully she will have puppies somewhere around Oct. 17th. I hope to
see a girl pup to keep.

Margo’s offer to hold a grooming seminar was once again discussed.
September 14 was agreed as a date providing it did not conflict with any
shows. Pat to check. If dates do not conflict we will have the Grooming
Seminar on the Saturday and the Fun Day on Sunday September 15.
Motion by Valerie to accept and approve the Executive minutes of
Wednesday 24 April 2002 as distributed. Seconded by Debbie C. All in
favour.
Julie Trottier’s Breedline Request:
Hollytroy Report - Carole Kane
To begin, I`d like to extend to Joan Clarke (Penaire) best wishes for a
speedy recover, Joan had knee surgery on October 17th.
On May 19th I had the distinct honor of judging Puppy Sweeps at our
National Specialty 2002 in Kitchener, Ontario, what a pleasure, what a
weekend ! Thank you all.
The show season past has been glorious, kept to my word, and only
packed the van four weekends, however, did manage to finished litter
mates Jacob and Emma, On Eagle`s Wings and On Breath Of Dawn.
The nursery is being readied for Christmas puppies, and I`m questioning
my sanity. Parents to be, Ch. Hollytroy`s Lady By Design (Bailey) and
Am. Can. Ch. Oakrun`s Blue Jay Of Paradym (Jay). Bailey is an
Alanna/Cowboy grand daughter.
Montgomery 2002 was both a thrill and an adventure, you haven`t experienced Montgomery until you`ve been there with Louise and Joanne
Lambert!! The thrill, Ch. On Eagle`s Wings At Hollytroy, shown masterfully by Kelly placed Second in a very strong class of 12-18 month olds,
and second in his class at the Sweepstakes. The adventure, Louise and
Joanne managed to find restaurants I didn`t know existed, we even came
back speaking a little Chinese!
Am. Can. Ch. Huntwood Mavrick N` Hollytroy (Maverick) made Terrier
Type`s 2001 list of Top Sires with two or more US championed offspring
to their credit.
Saturday, October 26th will see Jacob and Emma competing for Atlantic
Puppy Of The Year. The Award`s show will be held in Charlottetown, PEI.
This is a semi formal evening affair with 6 Judges working the dogs in two
rings.
While a bit early, I`d like to wish all Airedalers and their furkids a wonderful Holiday Season.
The Airedale Terrier Club of Canada
Executive Meeting, Tuesday 04 Jun 2002
Milton Leisure Centre, Milton, Ontario
Present: Elaine Zemaitis, John Ross, Debbie Adkinson, Debbie
Campbell, Valerie Adkinson, Pat Reed
Elaine called the meeting to order at 7:40.
Review of minutes from 24 April 2002:
Pat to contact Carol Kane to ask her if she is willing to co-ordinate the
Breedlines column with Julie Trottier.
Specialty 2002 and Floating Specialty 2003:
Elaine was pleased with the way things ran this year. Debbie presented
a treasurer’s report for the specialty however at this time it is not complete – there are still outstanding items to be paid for.
Motion by Valerie to hold a floating specialty in 2003 in conjunction with
the KW show providing we can find a chairperson and pending CKC
approval. Seconded by Debbie C. All in favour.
Terrier Judges for KW for 2003 are: Martin Doherty, Elaine Young, Tim
Doxater and Doreen Marsh
Floating Specialty 2002 and Specialty 2003:
Helen’s report was read
The executive wishes to stress that as this is a Specialty hosted by the
ATCC, all expenses (including ribbons) will be paid for by the ATCC and
that all income/receipts belong to the ATCC. Other clubs/organizations
should not be competing for revenue with the ATCC unless they are
sanctioned by the ATCC (i.e. future fund raising for ATCC Airedale
Rescue would be a possible candidate) Regional groups wishing to do
independent fund raising should do so-independently of ATCC functions.
Pat will request a copy of the “sponsorship draw” paperwork from
Pam/Helen that will appear in the Kings Herald for review by the executive. Outstanding items for the “sponsorship draw” are the date of the
draw and the amount of the donation.
Airedale Rescue – Yvan’s response:
The executive would like to thank Yvan for the research done to date. The
executive had some additional questions for an equitable solution to
nationally resolve this issue –i.e Finances – how would the money be
handled ? – Would it be divided amongst regions, or would it be 1st come
1st served? Would it include financing all purebred Airedales or only
those where the breeder was unknown? All monies must be accountable
by the National Treasurer.
The executive appreciates that this is a huge undertaking and that a
“chairperson” will be needed – is this something Yvan would be willing to
take on?
The executive also is in favour of ATCC executive sanctioned fundraisers
that would raise money in addition to the donations.
Policy and Procedure Update:
Job Descriptions – these were e-mailed to all executive members. No
comments received. Motion to accept the job descriptions as presented
King’s Herald Summer 2002
by Valerie made by John. Seconded by Debbie C. All in favour.
Boosters and Specialties – after much discussion regarding boosters, floating specialties and specialties Valerie will develop a standard form and guidelines for the above. This is be circulated to the
executive via email and hopefully approved at the next executive
meeting.
Next topic for discussion (at the next executive meeting) will be all
section pertaining to the trophies. Pat to invite Sheila Adkinson
(Trophy Chair) to the next executive meeting.
AOB:
Motion made by Debbie A to purchase the Australian grooming
video requested by Marion Domanski. Seconded by Valerie. All
in favour. Pat to contact Marion with details.
Debbie A brought up the new standing resolutions that were
approved at our AGM and felt they should be added to our current
ByLaws. To be discussed at a later meeting due to other pressing
issues.
Valerie to get all Montgomery videos to Terry Stiles as she has
accepted the position of club librarian.
Pat spoke with a Caledon club member and confirmed the show
will be back to it’s original location (pre – 2001). Due to space
issues there will be no booth for 2002. The date and judge for our
booster is still to be confirmed – awaiting reply from Caledon.
CKC has been updated with current executive for 2002 – 2004.
A letter was received by the CKC to say they had not received our
ByLaws and Constitution with the amendments they requested.
Pat contacted the CKC and found they had approved both on 10
Apr 2000.
General meeting to be held at Trio in conjunction with our booster
on Sunday 11 August 2002.
Next executive meeting to be held on Wednesday September 4
2002 at the Milton Leisure Centre.
Meeting adjourned at 9:40.
The Airedale Terrier Club of Canada
Executive Meeting, Wednesday 04 Sep 2002
Home of Elaine Zemaitis, Burlington, Ontario
Present: Elaine Zemaitis, John Ross, Debbie Klemp, Pat Reed
Regrets: Valerie Adkinson, Debbie Adkinson, Sheila, Adkinson
Elaine called the meeting to order at 7:45.
Review of minutes from 04 Jun 2002:
Debbie presented a draft financial statement for the National
Specialty 2002.
Motion by John to accept and approve the Executive minutes of
Wednesday 24 April 2002 as distributed. Seconded by Debbie. All
in favour.
Floating Specialty 2002 in Calgary
All reports submitted by Helen were read. Thank you Helen for the
comprehensive reports and congratulations on our first National
21 •
Floating Specialty.
John also gave a glowing report on the Floating Specialty. He was
also very impressed by the catalogue – I am told the quality was
very impressive - and John has promised to bring a copy to Fun
Day for all to see.
Floating Specialty Trophies:
Request Helen to calculate the price per trophy, which would
include plaque and all engraving. The executive can calculate the
medallion cost.
The draw for the trophy sponsor will take place at Caldeon Dog
Show at our general meeting on Saturday November 30. Cut off
for the mail in will be Friday November 22.
Pat to let Helen know if she wishes to bring the trophies to
Montgomery Elaine will bring them home otherwise they can be
shipped.
Floating Specialty 2003:
John Ross had been asked if he wished to be the chairperson –
he has declined but will serve on the Floating Specialty show committee.
Elaine received an email from Roy Aitchison offering to be the
Specialty show chairperson – the executive happily accepts his
offer.
The National Floating Specialty will be held at KW in May 2003.
Pat to contact George Gordon to judge and Esther O’Connor to
judge sweepstakes.
The Holiday Inn has notified Elaine that the room used by the
Westie club will be available to us this year as the Westies are
moving their specialty. Elaine will follow up for further details.
Elaine will meet with Roy and invite him to the next executive
meeting.
Calgary 2003:
Elaine to contact Helen re - judges.
The Western members are hoping for all trophies to be present for
the National Specialty therefore Pat to ask Sheila to look into shipping all the trophies for the National Specialty by bus – check
prices, insurance and how we go about doing this.
Note – As the executive members fund their own travel expenses,
it is unreasonable to expect all the executive to be at the National
Specialty, therefore the Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be
held in conjunction with the National Floating Specialty in KW.
Fun Day:
Everything is in order. There will be a general meeting.
ATCC Brochure:
Changes to the brochure – INC needs to be added after The
Airedale Terrier Club of Canada.
Once these minor changes have been made the executive would
like to see a final copy to approve but will do so by email – another meeting is not required.
Pat to request that Kelly Wood and all the directors have a stamp
made to include – their name, club title, address, phone number
• 22
King’s Herald Summer 2002
and email address. All to send their receipts to Debbie Klemp for
reimbursement. NOTE – do not include your kennel name. The
approx price is $20.00
Pat to request Helen to put a copy in with the next issue of the
Kings Herald so all members have a copy.
Pat to request Helen to send an email copy to all executive which
includes the directors and Kelly Wood.
Pat to request Helen has hard copies printed. Hard copies will be
send to the entire executive including the directors and Kelly
Wood. The remaining hard copies will be sent to Terry Stiles.
SANCTION MATCH
There was a discussion regarding having another sanction match.
After much discussion it was decided that we had enough to do at
this time. The sanction match will be discussed again in the
future.

What makes a great photo? It’s well composed,
sharply focused on the subject (the background can
be ‘soft’), has good lighting and color, and has that
extra ‘something special’. That might be drama, a
unique angle, humor ...very likely it means the subject does not appear to be conscious of the camera.

agenda for everyone to read.

Henk Bennick. Approved.
Financial Report – Debbie Klemp was absent. She sent a financial report
and copies were circulated to all. Henk Bennick questioned the amount
of money we have and asked if this violated any CKC rules. John
explained that the CKC had raised the limit that clubs could have in their
accounts due to inflation. Pat added that we do have a considerable
amount of money but we have been lucky up to now to have been able
to use the judges that were already on the panels and we have not had
to spend our money to pay judges. However, in 2003 it is looking like this
will change and we might have to hire and pay for our judges. All were
satisfied with the explanations.
Any Other Business – John thanked all for attending and a special thank
you to Pat Neill for her hospitality. John present her with a gift on behalf
of the club. A thanks was also given to Saul and Elaine Zemaitis for all
their organization and hard work. Henk Bennik made the draw for our
annual basket done up by Elaine and looking wonderful as usual. John
Ross won the draw. Ted Hall, a friend of Pat Neill’s, kindly donated 6
wrought iron works that he had done. Henk drew 6 additional names for
these lovely works. A special thank you to Ted for his kind donation.

- How can you be against
ear cropping, tail docking, and dew claw removal
and favor castration and
spaying?
- Doesn’t everyone know
that the added weight of an uncropped
Airedale tail will lead to back problems in later
life?
- What was Bravo True Grit’s call name?
- Does anyone else out there have an Airedale
that likes to poop on logs while out for a walk
in the woods?
- Go past 10 houses while walking your
Airedale(s) and they all will poop on the one
lawn where there is the only person doing lawn
work. Plus, last year, one of them killed his cat!
- Is there a story behind your kennel name?

Decorating with Dogs
Decorating when you have pets can provide unique
opportunities to express your own personal style and
taste.
1. Bare floors, without carpet or throw rugs, can
give a nice open feeling to a room. It can provide a
soothing balance when you have many art objects
that reflect your love of animals.
2. Paw prints and nose smudges on glass doors and
windows break up glare and soften the light in a
room.
3. Dog crates, when stacked three high, can add
height to a room and pull the eye up. If fastened
securely to the wall, the top can provide a safe and
dramatic place for exotic plants or statuary that otherwise might be molested by your pets. An up light
can make it a real focal point. Cats love to inhabit
the upper crates, leaving the lower ones for the dogs.
4. Old towels and blankets thrown casually on
upholstered furniture can add a wonderful homey,
country-quilt look to an otherwise bland room.
5. Common smooth upholstery fabrics can look
almost velvety when lightly textured with pet hair.
6. Vari-kennels, placed end to end and topped with
plate glass can create an unusual coffee table, one
your friends will really remember.
7. Doggie beds, randomly placed around a room,
can add color and texture, much as throw pillows do.
8. Shredded or chewed books and magazines send a
message to guests that they are free to relax and feel
at home.
9. Dog crates can make versatile end tables, and can
be slip covered to match any room decor.
10. There is absolutely nothing that makes a guest
feel as welcome as three friendly dogs hopping in
his lap as soon as he sits down.
So throw away those videos by Martha and others,
and express your own unique tastes. Your home
should reflect what YOU like!

Airedales -The Oorang Story
By Bryan D. Cummins
Bryan Cummins’ latest book, Airedales: The Oorang Story, is bound to
unleash some powerful emotions and will not be an easy read for some,
especially Airedale people who for decades have vilified the Oorang breedings of Walter Lingo, attributing them to little more than puppy-mill status.
The Oorang Story is about a man, his kennels and the dogs he produced.
It is a story that needed to be told; the author is to be commended for setting the record straight on what has long been considered by many as a
blight on Airedale history.
In addition to this book, Cummins is the author of The Working Airedale
(1994) and is a regular contributor to two national Airedale Terrier annuals,
plus several well-know dog publications.
In the preface, Cummins tells us of his first Airedale Terrier carrying Oorang
bloodlines and how this dog shaped his image of what an Airedale should
embody. Convinced the Airedale should be more than just another pretty
face, he determined to learn more of what made the ‘real Airedale’ tick.
One might suppose the information unearthed was to break ground for this
unique story.
Typically Cummins, The Oorang Story is impeccably researched. Drawing
from Oorang private kennel records, dog publications of the times and personal interviews, the author threads us back through decades of misconception and untruths that have reviled Walter Lingo and his Oorang breedings of the 1920s.
While you might not cotton to all the book brings to light, and may find yourself struggling with unresolved ethical issues, it is a given you will definitely be shaking your head in amazement at how this ‘full of himself’ master
businessman, through boundless promotion and entrepreneurship, created a dog-breeding empire so brilliantly diversified and complicated that it
defied anything ever seen in North America prior to or since his time.
Designed in two parts, the book also chronicles the breed’s infancy through
to its acceptance into North America. This historical account of the
Airedale’s evolution is unequalled, the best I’ve ever read and worth the
price of the book in itself.
Whether you are a history buff, dog lover, or Airedale-committed, The
Oorang Story will spend little time just resting on your coffee table. Were
the Oorang breedings unjustly denounced? You will have to read
Cummins’ book and find out!

An Invitation to Sponsor An
Airedale Terrier Club of Canada Floating Specialty Trophy
With great pride the Airedale Terrier Club of Canada annually
displays our wonderful Specialty Trophies. In preparation, they
are lovingly polished and buffed and displayed "like our family
heirlooms" as the focal point on our Trophies Table. With their
gleaming silver and years of engraved winners, they remind us
of members long gone, of beautiful dogs and of the great
Canadian Airedale Kennels of the past.
If you have had the pleasure of "winning" one of our trophies,
you will have felt the pride of having your dog's name
engraved on a brass plate. Whether it was, "The Claire HalfordBest of Winners Trophy" or the "Mayfield Trophy for Best
Puppy", your win was documented for future generations.
The Airedale Terrier Club of Canada is pleased to present a
new opportunity to carve your own piece of history and make a
welcomed donation to the club. We are inviting members to
sponsor a brand new series of ATCC Trophies to commemorate our Floating Specialties. Our first Floating Specialty took
place in Calgary and our next with be in Kitchener next year.
Regions will be encouraged to host future Floating Specialties.
With the help of Helen Arnold, the trophies have been purchased. They were selected with consideration to size, weight,
portability and the ability to ship them across Canada. Each trophy sports our wonderful ATCC Medallions and a pewter
plaque waiting to be engraved with the sponsors details.
Members may dedicate their sponsored Trophy as they
choose. You may create a memorial to a beloved, to a memorable Airedale or sponsor the trophy in your Kennel Name. The
choice is yours.
I invite all Club Members to apply for sponsorship. To apply for
this honor, please review the guidelines as follows. The sponsors will be drawn at the Caledon Dog show on Saturday
November 30th. Good luck!
Regards,
Elaine Zemaitis
President
