Mount Annan Public School Stenhouse Drive, Mount Annan 2567 Ph:46472399 www.mountannan-p.schools.nsw.edu.au Inspired learning, enriching opportunities, caring community 1 From the Principal… Last weekend I was informed that Jo-Ann Sankey, Deputy Principal from Narellan Vale Public School suddenly passed away. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy are extended to Jo-Ann’s family, friends and colleagues. As a colleague and a neighbouring school we have offered support in whatever ways Narellan Vale PS would need over the coming days. This may mean teachers from Mount Annan PS would go to Narellan Vale PS to assist with the running of the school next Thursday 31st March, on the day of the funeral. Last week we had the first of our parent forums for the year. It was fantastic to see an increase in the number of parents/carers attending our forums. In fact there was a 47% increase in attendance from the forums held at the end of last year. As part of our school plan, we have identified a need to improve student wellbeing within the school. During the forums, we sought feedback from parents that focused on improving or modifying the current award system as part of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) so that students are more equitably and fairly recognised for academic, social, sporting or extra-curricular achievements. In addition, we ran a workshop on helping your child with reading. The final session for the day was a summary of the school plan and general feedback/question time. Our strategic directions include: Excellence in Teaching and Learning; Holistic and Enriching Programs and Practices; and Engaged and Productive Global Citizens. We explained the improvement measures we are seeking as evidence of achieving our goals for the period 2015-2017. The Easter Hat Parade was a great day with students in K-2 parading around in their magnificent Easter Hats. Thank you to the parents and carers who supported this event, to the P&C for organising the Easter raffle and the cake stall and the teachers for ensuring a great morning was had by all. The cake stall raised funds for Westmead Children’s Hospital. Today, stage 3 leaders went to Parliament House on the invitation of Chris Patterson, MP. We look forward to hearing about their day. Harmony Day was held today also. Many thanks to Mrs Brown and Ms Garbutt for organising such an engaging, authentic and entertaining Harmony Day. Mrs Annette O’Neill – Principal From the Deputy Principal… Gold Morning Tea Gold Morning Tea will be celebrated on Monday 4th April in the school hall at 10:30am. Notes were sent home today. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with the students. Safety Reminder As you are all aware Stenhouse Drive and Welling Drive become very busy places in the morning and afternoons. We again ask that all parents use extreme caution when picking up and dropping off their children to ensure they are safe. Safe practice includes: checking over your shoulder before moving off from the kerb Parking legally – not across driveways Ensuring you adhere to the speed limit when driving in school zones. Year 5 entry to an opportunity class in 2017 Online applications for opportunity class placement in Year 5 in 2017 will open on Tuesday 26 April 2016 and close on Friday 13 May 2016. We had 33 students try out, and all performed very well, so narrowing it down to 8 was a tough job. The 2016 Premier’s Debating Challenge will begin next term. Good luck! School Cross Country 2016 On Friday the 18th March, students from Years 2-6 competed in the school cross country. The course was setup to include running within the school grounds & around Wandarrah Reserve. It was great to see all students try their best & finish off the race. Thank you to all the family members who came along to support the day. Congratulations to the students who finished in the top 4 of their age group. You will now be representing the school at the Razorback Cross Country on Friday 13th May, 2016. Students have been provided with a note in regards to this carnival & training in preparation for the Razorback Carnival. Training will start on Tuesday 22nd March, Week 9. If you require further information, please speak to Mr Waters. Thank you to all staff for their help and support in running a successful cross country carnival. I am pleased to report that all 6 classes are working in a productive manner. All students are working on their end of term presentations on “Extreme Weather”. Each child will present their findings on their specific weather element and will be judged on the manner in which they speak, the scientific presentation of their concept and the method in which they engage their audience. Extracts from these presentations will be recorded to send in to the Sky News Weather team, where they will do a specialised piece on our school and their interest in weather. The students have been working very hard on problem solving in Mathematics. They are developing many strategies to engage in and solve complex problems. These studies are largely practical in nature and the students as a group are making positive development in this area. Many thanks to the parents who attended the recent parent teacher interviews as well as participation in the parent forums. These meetings provide the school with much needed information to assist in your child’s learning. The resource pack note went home some weeks ago. The response initially was positive though there is still a long list of people who still have to pay. The money from the resource pack provides vital tools for the classroom as well as paying for the 3 incursions, one of which we have already had! Could parents please finalise these payments as soon as possible. Year 6 parents should have returned the high school form for 2017 enrolments. This form is vital in the transition process for your child. Please return it now so that your child’s details can be sent into the DEC for processing.
