BY David M. Fortier WWW.GUNSANDAMMO.COM S ure, the iron sights on a Kalashnikov are no better than those mounted on a 19th century Mosin. Twenty years ago that might have been something to gripe about. Today there is a wide selection of tough, nonmagnified red dot sights, as well as new magnified optics to choose from. Red dot sights in particular are well suited for use on Kalashnikov-type rifles. However, the problem hasn’t been finding a suitable optic, but rather finding a proper mounting solution. Although there is no shortage of imported sidemounts on the market, most are less than ideal. Scot Hoskisson felt the same way. After purchasing an ACOG, he failed to find a mount that worked reliably. Instead of giving up, Hoskisson made a sidemount to fit his needs. Then, after being contacted by a contractor in Iraq requesting Features a mount for his Aimpoint, he looked into • Positions 30mm optics to allow cowitness producing mounts as • Allows fieldstripping of the rifle without a commercial venture. removing the optic He began by designing • Dovetail adjustment ensures that the optic a sidemount for the is positioned directly over the bore Com-Bloc universal • Steel locking fasteners siderail. His goal was • Sidemount allows easy attachment on any to produce a light, yet Kalashnikov with a siderail rugged mount that • Military-grade side-locking system centered the optic over the bore. Additionally, he wanted it low enough to allow a cowitness, yet high enough to allow the rifle to be fieldstripped without removing the optic. His initial prototype weighed 7.6 ounces and looked good. Hoskisson didn’t want good, though. He wanted great. So he managed to get his mount in front of well-known firearms trainer Larry Vickers. Hoskisson then took Vickers’ feedback and improved the mount while dropping another 1.6 ounces off it. I was given a first look at the final prototype, called the AKM, and have to say it looks like the fix we’ve been waiting for. Machined from 6061 T-6 aluminum, it will place a 30mm red dot directly over the bore and allow a cowitness of the iron sights. The first run of mounts should be available just as you read this. Price is expected to be $200 for a high-quality mount that’s made in the U.S. Hoskisson’s company, RS Products, will be following up this initial offering with one for the Aimpoint Micro Dot T-1, Trijicon ACOG, a few conventional scopes and a dedicated mount for the PSL/SVD rifles. Keep your eyes on RS Products. New from RS Products is the AKM sidemount for a red dot sight. Seen here is an early prototype. The production mount will be lighter, with additional material removed.
