Rutnum, the world renown Sri Lankan film director making an interesting foray in to the
“Secrets of cinematography”, Ms Nihara Jayatileke giving away the certificates for the successful students of the January 2012 intake of the Photography Certificate Program, and the hilarious skit titled “Charitha atak”, by the popular stand up comedian Mr. Wilson Gunaratne.
It was hearting to see over 100 members and guest attending the event, which went on till late

April- Toys
It will be all fun with this assignment. We want you to show us toys, whether they were new or old, in a scene you designed, or being played with by kids. Maybe you are a new generation Smurf. Sometimes it’s strange when toys change
and update for the next generation. You can convey a new perspective, not necessarily used when toys are photographed,. The bright, light colours, the idea of being high tech or a mere a feeling of lightness and happiness.

July- The Workplace
Where do you work? Are you at a desk most of the day or in the great outdoors? Do you work at home or in an
office or studio? Are you alone or with a group of people when you work? Is traveling part of your job? Maybe
you are retired and your workplace is where you pay your bills or do volunteer work. Are you a sportsman,
doctor or an writer? Or of course, a photographer!!!! Give us a little peek into your life and let us see what you
do.
August - Hands
Hands and fingers are often dead giveaways to how the rest of the body is feeling. When photographing Hands
encourage your model to keep them relaxed and their fingers separated. Or sometimes the best thing to do
with hands is to give them something to hold or do. Consider using a prop (as long as it adds to and is relevant
the shot and isn’t distracting) or have them rest upon some other element in the shot (a leg, a chair etc). as
mentioned in our article in the last issue, hands tend to look best when shot from the side. Front shots of
hands can often look quite blob like. Be creative!
September - "Get Down".
Even though you know you should be taking shots from all different angles, one seldom get down very low to
shoot. Afraid of getting dirty maybe? but it's always good to see what a different perspective can do. Try getting eye level with babies and children to see how it draws the viewer into the photo. Consider a bug's eye
view of the world. Don't want to get dirty? Put your camera down low and shoot "blind".

Ranmihittene over night excursion organized by PSSL was an enjoyable and an exciting journey for the 22 members that took part. Starting off at 5.00am on the long
trek to the Tele-cinema park, near Hambanthota, the group arrived there as planned
by 1.00pm after making a surprise stop at the Le Petite Montessori at Embilipiitya.
Immediately after lunch it was shooting as usual, firstly at the Village setting with local models being carefully groomed by Pandu and Mithra. The photo shoot continued
to the night under lights, with special models from Colombo being inducted in, Kevin
(the හ ොද හිත cow boy) and little Taneesha. After a late night debriefing by
Pandu, a thrust quenching session a la Mr. Jonnie Walker, a heavy dinner, the
group retired to bed, under the watchful eyes of the little frogs who were
perched on the window sills.
Dawn was a heave of activity- catching the mist, shooting birds (all kinds), and
mingling the rays of the morning sun in the City setting, which boasted of many
a old building, which many of our senior members fortunately did recognize.
Departure was after breakfast, through an alternate route, stopping in view of
the Tissa viharaya for some photos, and the tank for quick beers, partaking a
ගහේ lunch at a reasonable price, a concerted effort to dump the හ ොද හිත
cow boy on the way, which failed miserably, the group arrived in Colombo in
high sprits, especially due to the vigorous and an enthusiastic attack launched
on poor Mr. Walker by most in the bus closer to Colombo.
See the හ ොද හිත cow boy doing the Embilipitiya marathon on our
site.

Crossing Bridges
is a joint project among the largest photography forums in South East
Asia and is an annual trip by the members around the ASEAN. This venture has been an ongoing event since
2004 bringing photographers to Indonesia (twice), Cambodia, Hong Kong,
Macau, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.
This annual event is organised by different host countries. This year
Photo Malaysia is the main host for this event. The participating member photo related organisations are Clubsnap (Singapore), Fotographer.net (Indonesia), Photo.vn (Vietnam), Photoworld-Manila (Philippines)
and PhotoMalaysia (Malaysia). The Photography Society of Sri Lanka
(PSSL) joins representing Sri Lanka for the first time. Collectively the
group represents more than 750,000 photographers in South East Asia.
The purpose of Crossing Bridges is bridge-building and making friendships between the various online Photography forums from around the
region.
The initiation of the current tour is a result of myself being a member of
PhotoMalaysia. I had the opportunity of visiting the last year's International Exhibition of Photography held at The Nikon Centre, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. My visit influenced me to apply for a request to add Sri
Lanka to the Crossing Bridges forum after getting to know PhotoMalaysia
administrators M/s. Yusuf & Maxby. After obtaining the consent of other
participating country leaders I was given the green light and I proposed
that PSSL. be the representing organisation in Sri Lanka.
Crossing Bridges -9 will be held from 26th.Aug.2012 to 01st. Sept. 2012 in Malaysia. Participation is limited to
each country and several 'work-hard' conditions have been imposed to make the participants be completely
'involved'. After the announcement of the opening for Sri Lankan photographers the 12 slots were taken up like
hot cakes.
Usually we are restricted to our country and it is never too late to go out and to observe the activities
of photographers of our region. Crossing Bridges will be a fine platform for those who confirmed their participation to interact, build-up friendships and exchange views & ideas with fellow photographers of South East Asian
region. As the newest joining nation, we have been honoured by invited to be the host of the next year's event
which will be held in Sri Lanka.
