Brave New World
ow, what a series. As Bobby Cox said, the only thing that would have made
it better was if the Braves had won. Four games each decided by one run.
Continuing with our theme for the month, in baseball, winning by one run
is enough!
As most of you know, I was born and raised in Atlanta. My childhood sports heroes
included Bob Horner, Dale Murphy and Phil Niekro from the Braves along with Steve
Bartkowski, Alfred Jackson and Alfred Jenkins from the Falcons and Dominique Wilkins
and “Spud” Webb from the Hawks. These along with many others were all quite the
characters. While they had flashes of brilliance, there was never any sustained level
of winning or excellence on any of those teams. That remained true until Bobby Cox
returned to the Braves.
I will never forget Sid Bream’s slide at the plate. I was at my friend Dan’s apartment.
We went crazy. The city went crazy. It will be hard to ever duplicate that feeling.
Then winning became ordinary. Year after year, the Braves played and won. We
came to expect it. New heroes emerged: Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux among many
others. In 1995, after all those years of not having a professional championship, the
Atlanta Braves won the World Series. There were many highs and lows along the
way.
So what now? A new manager for the Braves.
What does this have to do with our faith? Maybe nothing. Maybe a lot.
People from all walks of life follow the Braves. Some sit
in the SunTrust box just behind home plate. Some sit in the
seats in the upper deck from which the players are barely
visible. Others peddle popcorn, peanuts and Coke in the
aisles. Some watch from home on high-definition screens.
Others listen on beat up old radios. We call them our Braves.
We become emotionally invested.
It causes me to wonder, if such a diverse group of people
can come together to support a sports team –what would
happen if that same group of people came together around
a common faith? How could we leverage that level of
investment to change the world?
m here when you need me.

Flu Shots
Paige Gannon and Mary Lynn Purcell will give flu shots at the church this Sunday,
October 17th, during and after lunch in the library. Medicare pays for flu and pneumonia
vaccines so it would be no cost for our senior adults. Flu shots for others are $25.
Shots are for 13 years old and up only; younger children must see a pediatrician for
their vaccination. Claudia Harris will provide free blood pressure checks.
