New Directions Shelter • The Home Connection HAWTHORN HILL JULY 2014 Message from the Executive Director T hanks to you, we provided housing and shelter for 135 families, including 336 children, during 2013. These families would not have received the helping hand they needed without your support for Hawthorn Hill. The assistance we receive from our donors and volunteers is absolutely astounding. Our New Directions Shelter program in 2014 was able to place 72% of the families we served into stabilized transitional housing or permanent housing. We also helped 73% of the homeless mothers that looked for employment find employment. The families that completed The Home Connection program in 2013 achieved an increase of 145% in their monthly household income and all families transitioned into market based rental housing except for one family which purchased their own home. Thank you for making these accomplishments possible! We recently completed our two year capital campaign which raised approximately $400,000. The campaign provided us with the funding to acquire and renovate 7 single family homes for The Home Connection program. The average cost of acquisition and renovation for each home was approximately $58,000. The last home to be renovated was completed in April 2014. We now have a total of 28 housing units (22 single family homes and 3 duplexes) to provide for homeless families with children and assist them with achieving selfsufficiency. We know we need to do more as an organization and as a community to help the many families that need affordable housing and supportive services to work towards self-sufficiency. During 2013, from May through December, we turned away 2,151 homeless mothers and their children from New Directions Shelter because we were at capacity. Those families, especially the children, need a safe and affordable home so they have the opportunity to be successful in life. With your continued help and support, we can provide a helping hand to the many homeless families that come to Hawthorn Hill for assistance. Thank you so much for all you do to support our mission of helping families with children acquire permanent housing and achieve a level of financial independence. Sincerely, HAWTHORN HILL’S MISSION To establish and operate housing programs for homeless families with children that help them obtain permanent housing and to provide services to help families achieve economic self-sufficiency. www.hawthorn-hill.org Mark Joos President Sara Schuler Vice-President Mark Joos Interim Treasurer Annette Jorden Williams Secretary Bill Fajen Brian Hood Brian Hughes Amber Larson Erika Lippincott Marian Lyddon Linda Rullan Andraya Stender David Tank Phyllis Tinker Kim Weber Roger Hoyt Honorary Board Member Kayla West Honorary Board Member Hawthorn Hill Staff Tim Shanahan Executive Director email: [email protected] Sergio Hernandez The Home Connection Program Manager email: [email protected] Alissa Murphy New Directions Shelter Program Manager email: [email protected] Brittany Cooley Case Manager email: [email protected] Melanie Wright Administrative Assistant email: [email protected] Weekend Meal Donations H awthorn Hill often receives inquiries from people who feel compelled to help but who with busy schedules may not have a lot of time to volunteer. One option would be to sponsor a Saturday or Sunday evening meal for the families staying at New Directions Shelter. Sponsoring a healthy, child-friendly, weekend meal is a great way to help our moms and their children during their stay at New Directions Shelter. Providing some sense of normalcy during this difficult time in their lives is important to helping them back on their feet. A healthy meal offers a small sense of security and feels a little bit more like home. Weekend meals can be prepared outside of the shelter for approximately 8 adults and 18 to 20 children. Meals should be delivered to the shelter by 4:30 of the designated day. Please contact Melanie Wright at 515-244-9748 or [email protected], for additional information. Thank you! Before & After B elow are photos of three homes purchased from the City of Des Moines through proceeds from our capital campaign. All three were completely renovated with the last property completed in April 2014. Our nonprofit partner HOME Inc. served as the general contractor for the renovations. Hawthorn Hill staff also assisted with the renovations and we had help from some wonderful volunteers. All of the homes are located in Des Moines. S Once safely housed at the shelter, Shanika hit the ground running. She got her children enrolled in school, started job hunting, located childcare services, and applied for eligible mainstream benefits (something she had never done before). She was very driven to get back on her feet and always surprised the shelter staff with her tenacity and ability to function effectively while caring for five children, never mind how immaculate she managed to keep their room! Shanika’s fierce drive for independence made her an ideal candidate for The Home Connection Program for which she applied and was accepted in January of 2012. Having secured a safe haven for her children, she now had time to breathe and plan for her family’s future. Start Spreading the eNews! Thank you! Shanika Perseveres for Self and Family hanika and her five children arrived in Des Moines after the factory, where she’d worked for seven years, closed its doors and she realized that Chicago offered her few if any options. In October of 2011, she found shelter for herself and her kids at New Directions Shelter. Gillette Street DES MOINES Hawthorn Hill Board of Directors She and her Home Connection case manager set to work addressing any and all concerns that may interfere with her end goal, self-reliance. In the past two years she has made great strides towards this goal. She’s learned to budget both time and money and has gained a great deal of confidence and self-esteem in the process. Shanika is currently a full time student at DMACC and plans to graduate with a degree in business administration in December, 2014. Although she has had to take part time jobs to supplement her income and often walk to classes because she had no transportation, she remains steadfast and resolute that the job that will allow her to support her family once again is on the horizon. Needless to say, Shanika’s five children, ranging in age from 3-12 years, are all learning by example that hard work and perseverance definitely pay off in the end. (And they all keep very clean rooms, by the way!) The Terry’s Turn It Around A ddiction cost them everything, but love held them together through it all. “Thank you all for your kindness & understanding. May God bless you all. Love, Ashley” Ashley, June 2014 New Directions Shelter Client Melissa and Jack were married in 2004 and bought their first home that same year. They both had excellent jobs, and Jack had been working for the same company for 9 years. Unfortunately, Jack was injured at work and started to see a pain management specialist, which was the beginning of their downward spiral. Jack was laid off due to his injury and the family started getting behind on their bills. The financial issues caused a lot of stress and both Jack and Melissa took medication to numb the emotional pain. Their home was eventually foreclosed upon and their vehicles repossessed. In December 2009, Jack and Melissa’s parents turned them into DHS and their 3-year-old son, Nicholas, was taken from them. Jack and Melissa tried several short-term treatment centers but as soon as they completed the various programs, they relapsed. In 2011, Melissa discovered she was pregnant and realized she’d hit rock bottom. She knew she needed to take the road to recovery seriously and she wanted her family back. Melissa resided at the House of Mercy for over a year, and Jack resided at Bridges of Iowa for the same period of time. They regained custody of Nicholas and their second son, Nathan, was born in July of 2012. Now that each parent had successfully completed their treatment program, it was time to start being a family again together. In March of 2013, the family moved into a duplex in The Home Connection Hawthorn Hill – Helping families experiencing homelessness in Iowa Program. Since entering the program, Jack and Melissa have been attending marital counseling and working to improve their finances. They are wonderful parents who are working very hard to create a better future for themselves and their two sons. They enjoy doing fun family activities together such as reading, swimming and going to the park. Melissa is presently a Dean’s List student at DMACC studying for her Associate’s Degree in human services. She then plans to attend Grandview University for a degree in social work. Her end goal is to work as a substance abuse counselor and help mothers who are struggling with addiction; and she’s well on her way. She currently facilitates support groups once a week as a parent partner at House of Mercy and works as an advocate through DHS, helping families regain custody of their children. Jack recently put his criminal justice studies on hold to take a full time job in Grinnell to support his family. Little Nathan is now two years old and Nicholas will be heading to third grade. They’re both busy being healthy, happy kids. “The Home Connection program is the perfect program for anyone who is serious about turning their life around and getting back on their feet! We are honored to be a part of this program!” — Jack & Melissa Terry Help! New Directions Shelter needs… 5th Annual Art & More for Shelter Fundraising Event a Success! H awthorn Hill held its 5th annual Art & More for Shelter event on April 17th at West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines. The event was a great success due to the many sponsorships and donations for the event and all of the individuals that attended. Art & More for Shelter 2014 raised over $24,000 to benefit Hawthorn Hill’s New Directions Shelter and The Home Connection programs. It was an artful evening of food, music and fun while raising not only funds but awareness of the growing number of homeless families with children in our community. Several families came and spoke at the event about their episodes of homelessness and how Hawthorn Hill provided the assistance they needed to start working towards self-sufficiency and financial independence. So thank you again to all of the very generous artists, donors, volunteers and attendees for a great evening. A special shout out to our major corporate sponsors for the event: Nationwide, GuideOne Insurance, Great Western Bank, Holmes Murphy, LMC Insurance, McGladrey LLP, and Waukee Rotary Club. I love ya guys and again thanks for everything keep up the good work!
