Artist Kala Stein initiates “Re-Brick” art project
Kala Stein, ceramic artist, will honor the culture of
the region by revitalizing and re-using salvaged brick
destined for landfills, and documenting the original
buildings first-hand with the assistance of county
historians and local knowledge. This project, called
“Re-Brick,” is funded in part by the Finger Lakes
Community Arts Grants.
Re-Brick is inviting the community in and around
Ontario County to provide historical brick, or provide
knowledge of when and where a brick building is
being demolished. There is an overabundance of
worn and unwanted ceramic objects in our society,
and Stein uses them as viable art material, preventing them from going to the landfill. Stein is relying
on community members to donate bricks, tell their
Kala Stein, artist
story, and observe how their contributions are transformed into decorative tile. If you have bricks that you would like to donate to the
project, contact Kala to make arrangements.
The Re-Brick panels will be on display at the library for the month of August and will
be open to view during regular hours.
Kala Stein is an artist, designer, and educator known for her porcelain installations
and modern tableware. She is an innovator in non-traditional mold making and casting techniques. Ceramics Monthly (May 2011) named Stein as one of the “Top Ten
Emerging Artists.” She is the Director of the Cohen Gallery at Alfred University and
works out of her studio at 8732 Main Street, Honeoye.
Contact Kala Stein [email protected] for more information.
—Submitted by Kala Stein, www.KalaStein.com, www.FingerLakesTiles.com,
Facebook: Re-Brick, Instagram: @kalasteindesign
Up-cycled brick: Old red brick has been sliced by the artist
with a brick saw in preparation for glazing and re-firing the
thin slabs into decorative tile. The different shades of terracotta color come from the levels of iron rich ingredients in
the clay body. Traditionally, red brick was manufactured in
locations where there was plenty of iron-rich clay, and different characteristics of color and texture depended on the
location and properties of the clay source. If you have any
historic brick laying around and would like to donate it to
this project, please contact the artist.
Bricks will be accepted at the Honeoye Public Library during regular hours. There
is a form to fill out when you donate brick that will help the artist track its history.
The form requests any information you may have about the origin of the brick,
including whether it was once used in a structure. Kala is looking specifically for
terra cotta or red brick, bricks with factory stamps, or with significant history. Only
full bricks will be accepted—not broken bricks or bricks with mortar.
The artist’s worktable: Patterns and designs are developed by
starting with an underlying grid system and working geometry and curves into a complex, repeating pattern. Many of
the patterns are inspired by Kala’s travels to India and Bali,
architecture, and textiles. The best of the completed patterns
will be chosen and turned into a screen print. The print will
be made with glaze materials and will be fired onto the slabs
of reclaimed brick at about 2000º F.
On August 15 at 9 a.m. Kala will give an artist’s talk at the Honeoye Public Library’s
community room, where she will have finished Re-Brick tile panels on display and
will explain the entirety of the project. From there the public is invited to take a
short walk to Kala’s studio where, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., she will be slicing the brick
into thinner tile-like slabs of terracotta, glazing the surface, and re-firing with an applied decorative surface. She will use environmentally friendly methods in a sustainable direction that is ongoing in her work. Both the talk and demonstration are free
and open to the public, and all are welcome.

Website captures history of Hemlock and Canadice Lakes area
by Diane Olson
“It’s all about the history!” says Rick Osiecki, describing his website, www.hemlockandcanadicelakes.com, as a collection of anything and everything about the history
of the Hemlock and Canadice Lakes area (including the communities or towns of
Conesus, Hemlock, Canadice, Springwater, and Webster’s Crossing).
Rick, who has lived in Hemlock most of his life, has always had an appreciation for
the area, saying “It’s so pristine in nature and is pristine in attitude as well. The people here have a genuineness about them, and I wanted to capture it all.”
A retired electrical and software engineer, Rick spends some time on the website
every day, mostly gathering information and formatting. He describes it as a “steady
low-key procedure.”
He started the website in 2011. It began with his interest in area barns and cemeteries, which led him to realize the historical aspect, and the website grew from there.
“It wouldn’t happen without a lot of help,” he says. His involvement with the area
historical societies gave him an opportunity to meet fellow history buffs who have
all been instrumental in helping him spread the word about the website and gather
historical stories, information, and photos. He now receives submissions from many
people in the area.
The website contains a wide range of elements depicting the history of the area:
photos and stories of early settlers, scenes of the lakes’ heyday as a popular resort
and vacation destination during the late 1800s to early 1900s, and even information
about present-day activities such as the plans and details of the upcoming Springwater
Bicentennial, which starts in April 2016.
In addition to the countless historical photos, you can also view old and recent articles
from the area’s past and present newspapers and publications, (including The Lake
Country Weekender!) You can read stories about people and businesses of bygone days,
review old documents, timelines, letters, maps, and much more. You can even hear
audio interviews of local residents sharing their family histories. Rick has done a fantastic job of bringing it all together. So, take a look and learn more about the history
of the Hemlock and Canadice Lakes area at www.hemlockandcanadicelakes.com.
You may be amazed at what you didn’t already know!
Rick encourages anyone to contribute their stories, photos, and anything historical about
the area for him to post on his website, especially now to commemorate the upcoming
Springwater Bicentennial. He can be contacted by e-mail on the website. You can send
or e-mail your photos, or he is also willing to make arrangements to pick them up and
scan them for the website.
Photos of a cottage on Hemlock Lake (top), and workers with horses and wagon on Main Street in
Springwater in 1908 (bottom), are just two of hundreds of historical photos to be found on the
website www.hemlockandcanadicelakes.com.
Check out the Lake Country Weekender’s new website! Now you can see this
entire issue, past issues, and more at www.lakecountryweekender.com!

I know the Hermit Thrush returned
Announcing no more snow.
The geese have all been passing
Overhead for weeks by now
The Red Tail, Sharp-Shinned, and
Vultures, too,
Leave their shadows on the ground.
Then a Phoebe calls its name-song tune
And flaps its tail in wagging;
The promise of a nest below
The hay shed’s timber hanging.
A Robin cheery-o, cheery’s-me
While scratching in dead leaves
As loud as any squirrel might be
Below my bedroom eves.
There is a hut-like little home
Built on the forest floor
Where calls a plain brown Ovenbird
Teacher! Teacher! Teacher! he implores.
Zzee-zzee-zzee-zzee zee!
Buzzes a Black-Throated Green
Somewhere at the gully edge
In the evergreen, a vesper unseen.

From high up in the treetops
Another winged-soul’s return
A Red-Eyed Vireo whose endless banter
Is like a Robin without a tune.
Pleased-pleased-pleased to meet-you!
A Warbler greats my ear
And if I search him in the limbs
I can see his chestnut-sided tears.
The Barn Swallow’s a bully to my
Bluebird boxes
I clean out every year
But still devour mosquitoes and bugs
And so we hold them dear.
Sweet-sweet-sweet, I’m so sweet
The Yellow Warbler’s sing
Without whose song the cacophony
Would bemoan a sorrowful thing.
And if hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in our souls
Then so are the birds who return again
A blessing for us all.
The Orioles will hang their nest
Like baskets woven well

Dansville Dogwood Festival
set for May 11–17
The 49th Annual Dansville Dogwood Festival will take place on Monday through
Sunday, May 11–17. The festival has a long history, having been celebrated each
year in the Dansville community since the 1960s. It’s the longest-running community
event of its kind in our local area, all made possible because of the high level of community involvement.
The theme this year will be “The Circus is in Town.” A parade featuring local bands,
fire departments, and other floats will march down Main Street to Babcock Park at
5 p.m. on Saturday, May 16— the biggest day of the event. Be sure to get there early
to get a good viewing spot, as this parade usually draws a high attendance!
Other festival highlights include the 5K Dogwood Festival Walk and Run, an annual
craft show, chicken barbecue, a carnival, and more. Local community organizations,
the Dansville Central School, and other community members assist in organizing
events in participation of the annual festival.
For more information and the schedule for this year, go online to: www.dansvillechamber.com.

On Friday, May 8, Livingston Arts Center will be unveiling two new exhibitions with
a reception to follow. The New Deal Gallery at Livingston Arts Center’s new show
will be “Changing Landscape: Architecture in American Scene Painting in the 1930s.”
This exhibit will be a compilation of WPA paintings showing how artists involved in
1930s American Scene painting depicted their surroundings, including the architecture in landscapes. From this sample of our over 200-piece collection, the viewer will
be able to see that although these paintings were created at around the same time,
there are certainly changes in technique, style, and the depiction of architecture
within a landscape.
On the same evening, Livingston Arts will also be holding the first regional artist in
Apartment One. Ted Wetherbee will be hosting a solo show titled “As I See It.” Ted’s
large format paintings are a wonderful exploration into the human form and also into
the way the artist views the world around him. You can meet the artist on Friday,
May 8, as he will be present at the reception and able to answer any questions and
to discuss his work.
Please join us for good conversation, light fare, local New York State wine and,

Here’s what advertisers are saying
about The Lake Country Weekender:
“Service with a heart that makes us (advertisers) smile and keep coming back!“
—Katherine Humphrey, All Western Nursery & Christmas Tree Farm
“I really appreciate the great job you do with our advertising. I’ve tried several other
publications and find I get the best results from The Lake Country Weekender!“
—Adam Frick, Mill Creek Cafe
“50% of our customers say they heard about us in The Lake Country Weekender.”
—Alysha Baier, Cornerstone Market
“It’s amazing the amount of business we’re doing here! The Lake Country Weekender
has done as much for us as anyone. I can’t tell you how many times customers have
come into my store holding my ad in their hands.”
—Don Haywood, Springwater Amish Workshop
“My favorite newsprint! I tell my friends that it’s the best place to advertise! I have tried
other print advertising and had little success, but with The Lake Country Weekender
I receive a steady stream of new customers.”
—Sandy Hicks, Grounded by Yoga
“The Lake Country Weekender’s front cover photo of a beautiful local countryside beckons one to
turn the pages. As a long-time print advertiser, I know what is desirable—The Lake Country Weekender’s easy-to-read type makes my advertising stand out, not jammed with rows of other illegible
messages. The talented use of color draw the eye to one’s message and thus the content is read,
not skipped over. I recommend businesses and others take advantage of Ms. Olson’s fresh, vibrant,
and unique abilities to create and promote their messages.”
—Ralph Parker, The Livonia Inn
