Follow the autumn-filled byways of the Naples Open Studio Trail around Honeoye and Canandaigua Lakes on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, and visit artists in their studios. Trail “riders” can enjoy spectacular scenery, changing fall colors, winding back roads, and pastoral scenes while driving from studio to studio. The Naples Open Studio Trail is a group of dynamic, innovative artists that invite the public into their studios to share their craft, demonstrate how they work, and create a better understanding of the arts. They work in oils, glass, ceramics, metal, wood, textiles, and leather, and create paintings, sculpture, wearables, furniture, jewelry, photography, housewares, and more. These artists typically sell their wares in galleries and at craft fairs; during the Studio Trail weekend, purchases and commissions can be made directly with the artist. To increase artistic options to anyone who visits during the Trail, its members decided to open this free art event to other area artists. Each of these guest artists will show their work in one of the Trail Artists’ studios, galleries, or homes, adding a new dimension to the weekend experience. Guest artists are: Gloria Betlem, pastel paintings; Amy Colburn, illustrations and murals; Dewey Fladd, photography; Joan Rusitzky, hand-dyed and painted scarves, jewelry; George Smith, photography; Lisa Twombly, Estancia Designs, jewelry; and, Kelly Waldt, Turijane Jewelry, metalsmithing. Trail artists are: Albie Alliet, paintings; Leon Applebaum, glass; David Barnet, woodwork; Becky Congdon, glass; John Dodd, furniture; Robert and Beth Fladd, stone and wood sculpture; Scott Grove, furniture; Pat Halpen, handbags; Bruce Hicky, woodwork; Stephanie Marshall, pottery; Robin McCondichie, pastel paintings; Annie Schliffer, ceramics; Linda Starkweather, paintings, jewelry, and more; Mark Stash, paintings; Kala Stein, ceramics; Cub and Pam Storms, pottery and jewelry; and, Robin Whiteman, sculpture. Now in its 14th year, the much anticipated Naples Open Studio Trail draws people from all over the region to the Finger Lakes every first weekend in October. Visitors can stop by all the studios or only those that strike a particular art interest. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days. To learn more about the participating artists and to see a map of the studio locations, visit the website, www.naplesopenstudiotrail.com. —From information submitted by Nancy Napurski Grove Some of the works by participants include: an enhanced photo by George Smith (upper left); a pastel painting by Gloria Betlem (upper center); a scarf by Joan Rusitzky (upper right); a painting by Amy Colburn (center left); an art glass bead by Becky Congdon (center); a pastel painting by Robin McCondichie (center right); a necklace by Lisa Twombly (bottom left); a necklace by Kelly Waldt (bottom center); and, a painting by Mark Stash (bottom right). One of New York State’s oldest festivals, it has been documented by Charles Kuralt, named in National Geographic magazine, and visited by Miss America. Long before the vinifera grape was growing in the Finger Lakes, hops, used in brewing beer, was the major cash crop. In the late 19th Century, central New York was the largest producer of hops in the nation. This year the festival is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Most events will be taking place on Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, with some events also on the Thursday and Friday before. The theme this year is “50 Colors of Fall.” The weekend will be packed with activities all over town, with many shows taking place at the Village Greens. Enjoy a parade, great food, a show and sale of arts, crafts, antiques, flea market, historical exhibits, a petting zoo, many sports contests and games, lots of entertainment, karaoke contest, and more! There will be a wide variety of food vendors from all over the state providing an international mix of fine foods. Artists and crafters from New York State and beyond will be displaying and selling their creations. The festival is a townwide event, with many activities taking place in residents’ yards. Everyone gets involved. Admission to the festival is free; there is a small fee for parking. No dogs are allowed on the festival ground or sports complex. For more information, including a schedule of events, go online to: www.fallfoliagefestival.com. Bristol Mountain Scaerial Adventures, Friday & Saturday evenings (except Halloween) Bristol Mountain puts its own twist on Halloween haunting with its Scaerial Adventures Haunted Headlamp Tours. Navigate the treetop elements and zip line in the dark at the mountain’s summit. Meet the creatures of the night as you progress through the courses—werewolves, zombies, and witches, oh my! The tours are on every Friday and Saturday evening in October, except Halloween night; reservations are highly recommended (call 585374-1180). Bristol Mountain is located at 5662 Route 64 in Canandaigua. For dates, price, and times, go online to: bristolmountainadventures.com/scaerial-adventures/ BVT’s “Fall for the Arts” series, weekends in October Bristol Valley Theater, Naples’ award-winning live professional theater, will present the Fall for the Arts Series on weekends in October. This cornucopia of arts events features something for every taste, including folk music, food and wine tastings, and a full-staged musical revue. “We’ve expanded our programming this year,” says Bristol Valley Executive Artistic Director, Karin Bowersock, “In addition to three great one-time events, we’re also presenting a week-long run of a fantastic musical revue.” The series kicks off on Saturday, October 3, at 7 p.m. with the annual visit by The Paulsen Baker Band, perhaps the Finger Lakes’ favorite traditional folk group. Their repertoire—sprinkled with down home humor—is influenced by artists as varied as James Taylor, Peter Paul and Mary, and the country sounds of Willie and Waylon. Next up, The Fiddlers of the Genesee take the stage on Sunday, October 11, at 2 p.m. With a repertoire that runs from reels, jigs and hornpipes to waltzes, western swing and bluegrass, the Fiddlers (and guitar, banjo, mandolin, and hammered dulcimer players) shed a whole new light on old-time music. Funding for The Fiddlers of the Genesee comes from Kenyon & Kenyon. Tickets for each folk music concert are $15 for adults, $10 for ages 12 to 18, and $5 for children under 12. To honor the traditional celebration after the long harvest, the South Bristol Historical Society will host the 10th Annual Hops Harvest Dinner & Dance at the South Bristol Grange Hall on Saturday, October 3, from 6 until 10 p.m. The event includes a full harvest-style meal with homemade desserts, live music by the East Hill Rascals, plus silent auctions and raffles. The cost for the event is $25 per person, and $12 for children 12 and under. Reservations are requested and are limited to the first 100. For information and reservations call 585-229-4833. The South Bristol Grange Hall is located at 6457 NYS Route 64 in the town of South Bristol. All proceeds to benefit the South Bristol Historical Society. For more information, go online to: facebook.southbristolhistoricalsociety. Harvest Festival at Deer Run Winery, Sunday, October 4 The annual Harvest Festival at Deer Run Winery will be on Sunday, October 4, from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., featuring free wine tasting, face painting, hayrides through the vineyard, trick or treating, a cookie-decoration station, and a kids’ grape stomp. Geneseo Wegmans will provide a sampling, Strummerz Band will be playing, Hemlock Hills Alpaca Farm will be joining us, and Cheesed and Confused will be selling their gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches! It’s a free event for the family to celebrate the grape harvest. Costumes are encouraged! Deer Run Winery is located at 3772 West Lake Road (at Conesus Lake) in Geneseo. Letchworth Arts & Crafts Show & Sale, Saturday–Monday, October 10–12 This year, the Arts Council for Wyoming County will present its 40th Letchworth Arts and Crafts Show & Sale (LACS) in the number one state park in the country. In addition to this important milestone, the show recently received a new ranking as one of the top 50 art festivals in the USA. So, make plans now to spend Columbus Day weekend at this “state of the arts” festival on October 10, 11, and 12. It will showcase some of the country’s finest visual and performing artists, artisans, and crafts people, as well as a multitude of traditional and unique consumable foods for all taste buds. LACS is held at the Highbanks Recreation Area of Letchworth State Park, also known as the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The stunning venue is a key component that sets this festival apart from all others. The ambience created by peak fall foliage throughout the park and the spectacular canyon is unparalleled. The festival could be considered the premiere holiday shopping opportunity of 2015 for you, your friends, and family. Choose from some of the best pottery, paintings, quilts, fiber arts, handcrafted jewelry, photography, furniture, decorative painting, dried floral arrangements, packaged specialty foods, and so much more. Over 300 artisans display their wares along with many food vendors, live entertainment, and other fun activities for the entire family. Included in our entertainment lineup this year are the a classic rock band, Trilogy, and 23 Skidoo, a variety band that plays swing, polkas, oldies, and Dixieland Bourbon Street style. The Warsaw Barbershop singers will roam the grounds on Monday along with a spinning wheel demonstration by fiber artist Laurel Hendershott. Performances or demonstration are scheduled at 1 p.m. each day. Beginning on October 15, BVT will present The Gourmet Cabaret—a tastefully tuneful performance that is sure to excite the taste buds as much as it excites the ears. Featuring favorites such as “Java Jive” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise,” the show is a musical celebration of everyone’s favorite subject—food, glorious food. Admission to the festival is free with an $8 per car entry fee to the park. Handicapped parking is available along with curbside pickup of heavy purchases. For more information, contact the ACWC at 585-237-3517 or visit our website at artswyco.org. “I’m thrilled to be performing in The Gourmet Cabaret,” says David Shane, who is also the theater’s Associate Artistic Director. “It’s nice to be extending the type of shows we present in the summertime into the fall.” Bristol Mountain Fall Festival, Sunday, October 11 The Fall for the Arts Series concludes with A Taste of the Finger Lakes. On Saturday, October 24, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., attendees are invited to spend a delicious afternoon sampling culinary delights specially prepared by chefs from local restaurants paired with tempting tastings of local vintages. The admission price of $20 includes all food and wine tastings, and is for ages 21 and older only. Restaurants and wineries wishing to participate may contact David Shane at [email protected] or at 585-374-9032. Join us on Sunday, October 11, for our very popular Fall Festival. Take a scenic Sky Ride to view the peak fall foliage, enjoy live music by a local band at the base area and at the summit. Visit wine, beer, spirits, and food vendors along with unique craft vendors. Hemlock Hills Alpaca Farms will bring some alpacas to pet. New this year will be Bubble Ball Extreme, which is a fun activity for kids and adults (extra cost). The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with Sky Rides operating from noon to 4 p.m. Tickets for all events are available online at www.bvtnaples.org, by phone at 585-3749032, or at the door at the theater at 151 South Main Street in Naples. The box office for each event opens one hour before showtime. Bristol Mountain is located at 5662 Route 64 in Canandaigua. Say you saw it in The Lake Country Weekender! Page 5 East Bloomfield Historical Society hosts “Hops in NYS and Hoppy Beers” The East Bloomfield Historical Society will host “Hops in NYS and Hoppy Beers,” on Thursday, October 15, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the EBHS Museum at 8 South Avenue in East Bloomfield. The program is free and open to public. The program will be presented by Tom Bullinger, owner and brewmaster of The VB Brewery in Victor, who has been an avid home brewer for over 30 years, exploring all kinds of styles of beer and brewing techniques. With the current growth of microbreweries in the U.S. and New York State, the need for beer ingredients continues to grow. One of the more interesting ingredients in beer is hops. Hops provide a number of important components to the flavor and aroma of beer, and is an important ingredient for preservation of the beer. Hops have traditionally been a minor ingredient in beer, but the latest trend toward very hoppy beers has brought them to the foreground of interest for brewing. At one time, New York State was the largest producer of hops in the U.S. Join us as we explore the history of hop growing in New York State and discuss the brewing process related to hops. We’ll also sample a locally-brewed beer produced with locally-grown and processed hops. —Submitted by Judy Fulmer, Program Chair, EBHS SAMMY’S PLACE RESTAURANT Happy Halloween! 8148 Main Street, Springwater All You Can Eat THURSDAY PASTA NIGHT Does your home need improvement? Tony’s Pizzeria celebrates its 10th anniversary Tony’s Pizzeria at 140 Main Street in Dansville reaches a milestone on October 6: the tenth anniversary of its first day in business. Owners Tony and Salome Farraro remark on how quickly the time has flown by. Salome comments, “We both have differing memories of our early days. They were busy and full of learning opportunities. But here we are, 10 years later, thanks to our wonderful customers.” We’re Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary and National Pizza Month at Each October, Tony’s Pizzeria has celebrated its anniversary (also National Pizza Month) with giveaways. This year is no exception, but the number of “gifts” will be greater. The biggest and best of all is three tickets to the Buffalo Bills vs. Miami Dolphins game on November 8, thanks to Geno and Nancy Bortle of ACG Fire-n-Safety, ticket sponsor and longtime friends of Tony’s Pizzeria. Customers can enter the giveaway at the pizza shop or like Tony’s Pizzeria Facebook page. There are some entry criteria, which can be found on the Facebook page and at the pizza shop. As an added gift, Tony and Salome Farraro will make a donation to one local nonprofit as determined by customer votes at the shop. The non-profit must be located in Livingston County and serve the Dansville community. “We try to support as many non-profits and organizations as we can every year, even if only with a pizza gift certificate. This anniversary is the perfect opportunity to give back a little bit more than usual. It’s important to remember that we all support each other to make our small town the best it can be,” says Tony. Located in the heart of Dansville’s historic business district, Tony’s Pizzeria occupies an 1840s-era building. Using Tony’s recipes, dough, sauce, meatballs and soups are made on premise. Traditional pizzeria items are available daily for lunch and dinner: pizza (whole and slices), stromboli, chicken wings, subs and wraps, salads, soups, and more. The restaurant offers dining space, take out, delivery, and catering service. The menu and more information is available on www.thebestpizzaindansville.com and Facebook: Tony’s Pizzeria Dansville. Nature in the Little Finger Lakes Twelve things October brings 1. The haunting screech of a grey fox below the pasture awakening me in predawn’s starlight dressed hours, luring me to get up and see the rare convergence of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury, all below Leo in the eastern sky this month. 2. The sudden spell to stand still and savor the brilliant blue midday sky over a tapestry of trees in seasonal tresses. 3. The hardening, warty-skinned fruits of summer’s labor—spaghetti squash, butternut, pumpkin, and acorn—to cure and put by for fall and winter stews. 4. A feeling deep in my bones that I need to take one more paddle on Canadice or Hemlock to admire the reflection of fall colors on water, of water lighting the air, of the autumn air itself. 5. Winding country roads into small towns like Naples, with pop-up tents selling pies in flavors of Concord grape, pumpkin, apple, and elderberry, swearing that if I sell at a stand this fall I will eat at least one whole pie myself. 6. Hoards and herds of wooly bear caterpillars crossing the roads, remembering the chart my son and I made during his preschool year to investigate any truth to the folklore about the caterpillars’ black bands predicting the coming winter, and realizing how many winters have passed, with my son now grown and at Cornell. 7. Apples—Northern Spy, Lady, Jonathan, Winesap, Gala, Honeycrisp, Ida Red, and many more for eating, baking, and cider (fresh or as fermented brew). 8. Imagining great Halloween costumes I will never have enough occasions to wear: Persephone, the Snow Queen, or maybe a Seneca Lake salt mine storing gas. 9. My daughter’s high school soccer games; me wrapped in a blanket and dreaming of a hot dinner while kettles of hawks and vultures circle the thermals preparing for migration. 10. Not so much a longing for the stacking and finishing of getting wood in, but for the burning wood smell, the curl of its smoke, the deep inner radiance of a woodstove’s light, and heat as the daylight hours fold in. 11. The stacking of scratchy and clover scented hay for the horse in the cobwebby barn. 12. A traditional setting out of an extra plate for Halloween’s harvest dinner in memory of my ancestors, for those who have recently passed away, and for the one I miss whose echo of grateful prayers still whispers in my ears.
