Dansville ArtWorks schedules grand opening for new gallery
Also on September 5, Dansville ArtWorks is participating in “Kidding Around
Downtown”; children may complete a craft activity for $1 donation in Vita’s Garden
of Inspiration from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Beginning the following week, the gallery will be open Thursdays from 12 to 6 p.m.,
Fridays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m to 3 p.m. Payment by credit
or debit card will be accepted. Special requests for art supplies are welcome.
Dansville ArtWorks’ new gallery space
Dansville ArtWorks Inc. proudly announces the location of its permanent gallery
space at 178 Main Street, Dansville—the only Main Street art gallery in Livingston
County. The grand opening will be on Saturday, September 5.
Building owners Randy and Susan DeMuth have operated Dansville Stationers from
this space for many years. Their desire to consolidate their business into one building
led to discussions with Dansville ArtWorks’ board. Mutual interests have resulted in
collaboration between the two entities. The DeMuths will continue to operate Dansville Stationers and Dogwood Trading Company at 176 Main Street with the biggest
selection of Vera Bradley between Corning and Buffalo, Alex and Ani, and many
other “Made in the USA” products.
Dansville ArtWorks Inc. is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization whose mission is to cultivate and enhance the visual, literary, and performing arts opportunities in the greater
Dansville community. It is supported by community members and businesses, and
offers art workshops for adults and children; programs, including Chalk Walk & Arts
Fest; and exhibition, consignment, and performance opportunities. Tax-deductible
donations are accepted at the gallery or via gofundme.com/DansvilleArtWorks.
Support via goods and time/talent may be discussed with any board member or the
gallery coordinator. Last but not least, area artists are encouraged to reach out to
Dansville ArtWorks to become involved.
For more information, contact [email protected].
—Submitted by Salome Farraro
Dansville ArtWorks will create exhibit, consignment, retail, and workshop areas at
the new gallery. Most exciting—when both businesses are open, the internal archway between the spaces will allow customers and visitors to easily move between
Dansville ArtWorks and Dogwood Trading Company. Susan DeMuth adds, “This
gallery will be a great addition to Main Street, bringing excitement and diversity to
the downtown district, and it will complement our business by selling art supplies
and artwork. We look forward to working with this dynamic energetic group.”
The gallery will feature: 2D and 3D art exhibits, performances showcasing musical
and writing talents, consigned and exhibited art sales, art supplies, and workshops
in Vita’s Garden of Inspiration (named in memory of Vita Catapano Magill through a
generous donation from her children). On the horizon, the gallery has plans to have
open studio times and to host events for other organizations.
A public reception is planned for Saturday, September 5, from 10 a.m to 12 noon.
The community is invited to a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting with local dignitaries, including
a representative of Senator Catharine Young’s office. The ceremony will be followed
by a reception, refreshments, and music by harpist Mary Lester until 12 p.m.
The gallery will remain open until 3 p.m. so that visitors to the New York State Festival of Balloons can stop by between launches. The inaugural exhibit will include
artwork by Taylor Rapp, the first recipient of Dansville ArtWorks’ student art award.

Little Finger Lakes area festivals abound in September!
NYS Festival of Balloons, Dansville
Dansville’s New York State Festival of Balloons, now in
its 34th year, will once again decorate the lush green
landscape in southern Livingston County with dozens of
hot air balloons on Labor Day weekend, September 4, 5,
and 6. The balloons will include five shaped balloons,
with two new cartoon characters joining the familiar trio
of Pepe (the skunk), Pokey (the turtle), and the festival’s favorite Purple People Eater. The festival hosts pilots and crews from up and
down the east coast, entertaining over 20,000 festival guests and providing a spectacular farewell to the summer each year.
A kick-off party begins the weekend on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Dansville Airport with
the first official hot air balloon launch and music by Lucky Number as the art, craft,
and food vendors open for business.*
Saturday and Sunday are filled with family fun, starting and ending each day with a
scheduled hot air balloon launch, with rides available at each launch. Launches are
scheduled at approximately 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. each day. Festival entertainment includes inflatable rides for kids, walks inside a balloon, and tethered balloon rides.*
“Talons! A Bird of Prey Experience” entertains 12–4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
The popular Classic Car Show is at noon ’til 4 p.m. both days. Bands perform each
afternoon and evening—check our website or Facebook page for specific times for

PLY magazine. She is known for her entertaining and instructive DVD, Sit and Spin,

yarns with a technical hand. Jacey has been a consultant, editor, and writer for SpinOff magazine, is on the editorial board of Handwoven magazine and wrote a regular
column, “Ask Jacey,” for the New Zealand fiber magazine, entangled. Please go to
http://www.gvhg.org/fiber-fest/2014-featured-guests/, for more information and to
see the classes that she will be instructing.
Exhibits, competitions, and workshops on a wide variety of fiber arts are featured at

with the fiber arts will enjoy sheep shearing demonstrations, stunning handcrafted
gifts and one-of-a-kind garments, free horse-drawn wagon rides, and festival food.
The Hemlock Fairgrounds, located just 25 miles south of Rochester on Route 15A
in Livingston County, has been home to this annual festival since its inception in
1995. Admission to the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival is $7 per day; children 12 and

Naples Grape Festival
Autumnfest & Wingfest, Geneseo
Since 1961, the Naples Grape Festival is held every
September in the Naples Valley to celebrate the
area’s grape harvest, talented artisans, winemakers, local and regional music, and cuisine. This
year’s festival will be on Saturday and Sunday,
September 26 and 27, from 10 a.m. ’til 5 p.m., at
the Naples High School grounds and across the
street at Memorial Town Hall, rain or shine.
The Geneseo Merchants Association (GMA) and the Association for Preservation of
Geneseo (APOG) will present Autumnfest & Wingfest on Saturday, September 26,
from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. These two events will combine this year with a variety of activities, food, and entertainment taking place on Geneseo’s Main Street and Center Street.
GMA’s Autumnfest will feature hayrides down Main Street, a fall-themed photo
booth, and finish off the day with the Great Pumpkin Race down Bank Street from
3 to 4 p.m., sponsored by ReMax. There will also be several vendors on the street,
selling food and autumn crafts. SUNY Geneseo campus bands, dancers, and singers
will be performing throughout the day in several locations on Main Street.
APOG’s 2nd Annual Wingfest will take place from 12 to 3 p.m. on Center Street, featuring chicken wings from 10 different restaurants in Livingston County. Representatives from these restaurants in Avon, Mount Morris, Lakeville, and Geneseo will
bring their wings to compete for the title of “Best Wings in the Valley.” For a $10
presale ticket, participants can taste these wings and vote for their favorite. During
the event, there will also be a wing-eating contest. The winner of this competition
will be crowned the “Champion Chicken Chomper.” Beer will be on sale for those
21 and over. All proceeds from this event will go to support the “Save the Wall”
fundraiser.
GMA and APOG’s Autumnfest & Wingfest will be a full day of fall fun, unlimited
wings, family activities, and musical entertainment in Geneseo. Tickets for APOG’s
Wingfest are available in selected Geneseo Main Street stores or online at
http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1995995. For more details visit Geneseo
Shops or the Association for Preservation of Geneseo.
National Hunting and Fishing Days
The 43rd annual National Hunting and Fishing Days will be on September 26 and
27 at the Mumford Sportsmen’s Club, 8667 Gulf Road, in beautiful Mumford, located about one mile west of the Genesee Country Museum. The two-day event is
sponsored by the Livingston County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs.
National Hunting and Fishing Days is free and open to the public. Children of all
ages and pets on leashes are welcome as well. Many of the events, vendors sites,

Sportsmen’s Club. Proper footwear is advised.
Sportsmen of all ages with a desire to explore the great New York outdoors will
find a multitude of items to make their days afield more enjoyable. There will be
handicapped and standard parking available on site. Off-site parking is available
with free shuttle service to the event. Vendors from around the area display a wide
variety of products for outdoor people.
There are opportunities to shoot clay targets with a shotgun, try your hand at 3-D
archery targets, or check out the latest in air rifles at the Crosman Arms shooting
range. Most events are free or are offered at a modest price. All archery and shooting supplies are provided at the event.
This year’s event does not offer on-site fishing. The Caledonia Fish Hatchery, founded
by Seth Green 151 years ago, is about two miles away. An NYS DEC public fishing
area is adjacent to the hatchery on Spring Brook Creek.
Several local sportsmen’s clubs will be in attendance to provide information about
their organization and activities they offer. Take the opportunity to visit the NYS
DEC displays. Meet with representatives from Fish and Wildlife, Forestry, and Environmental Protection Services.
There will be food vendors that can pop up a bag of kettle corn, cook you a cheeseburger, give you a sample of some spicy mustard, or treat you to the best venison
hot dog you’ve ever had.
Over the years the festival has showcased the finest artisans of the Finger Lakes.
All of the art displays are reviewed by a jury of independent artists to insure the
selections for sale are handmade and high quality. The exhibits offer a large variety of merchandise for sale on both the Memorial Town Hall and the Naples High
School grounds.
Local and regional musical artists and bands will perform both days, providing an
assortment of rock, blues, jazz, and original music to get your feet tapping and your
heart singing. Performers on Saturday include Greg Townson, White Woods, Two
Hour Delay, and Bobby Henrie and the Goners; on Sunday is Old Hippies (trio),
Ten Cent Howl. Mighty High and Dry, and Hard Logic.
Judging for “The World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest,” sponsored by Joseph’s Wayside Market, begins Saturday at noon. Winners will be announced and presented
with trophies and checks at the end of the judging.
Festivals and great food go together, and this festival has a marvelous selection of
edibles to choose from. A wide variety of food vendors will offer something for everyone’s palate.
And what would a grape festival be without wine? For a $10 admission, you can sample
wines on sale by any of the vendors at the wine-tasting tent behind Memorial Town
Hall; sealed bottles of wine will be for sale at each winery table. (Please sample moderately and keep in mind that no alcoholic beverages may be consumed on the grounds
of Memorial Town Hall or the Naples High School outside the wine-tasting tent.)
So make your visit a day (or two) to enjoy everything grape that the Naples Valley
has to offer, and more! The festival is presented by the Naples Rotary Club. For more
information, go to: www.naplesgrapefest.org.

East Bloomfield Historical Society to
host program on orphan asylums
The East Bloomfield Historical Society (EBHS) is hosting a program entitled: “Abandoned: The Untold Story of Orphan Asylums” on Thursday, September 17, from 7 to
8 p.m., followed by refreshments and informal discussion, at the EBHS Museum, 8
South Avenue, East Bloomfield.
The presenter will be Michael Keene, a writer and publisher from Pittsford, who will
discuss the details of this true story:
In 1848, Ireland was gripped by famine. Nearly a million people died of starvation.
Desperate, a million more abandoned their homeland and immigrated to America.
Many settled in Five Points, an area of Lower Manhattan infamous for its squalor,
gang violence, and disease.

until November 21. Take the time to view this collection… you will not be disappointed.
Experience the “Wizard of Oz” at the library!
By the mid-nineteenth century, an estimated 30,000 orphaned and homeless children
roamed New York City. They survived by resorting to petty crime, by begging, and by
selling newspapers for a nickel a piece. They slept in alleyways, in cellars, and even
sewers. For protection, they joined the violent gangs of the Bowery Boys, the Dead Rabbits, and the Roach Guards.
In response to this crisis, the age of orphan asylums began, culminating in one of the
most improbable and audacious episodes in American history—“The Orphan Train
Movement,” whose heroes undertook the rescue of these children, who had been lost to
the streets and our institutions, and fought for their liberation.
The program is free and open to the public.

“Wake up with the birds. Go to sleep with the birds. Wake up with the birds….” And
on and so forth was written across my friend’s wall. The rhythm of it was enticing,
both literally and figuratively. But this seasonal stretch of long days that dawned with
the calls of phoebes, towhees, and warblers and closed curtain with the notes of
thrushes and the nocturnal chorus of frogs and toads is sliding away. Since the summer solstice we lost a minute of light a day for a month. The pace of light loss accelerates and now two minutes per day is sliced off diurnal time as we reach the autumn
equinox on September 21. Tiny green tree frogs and bull frogs have grown hoarse
and sleepy and insects now fill the void (lest there be silence too soon). Now katydids
and crickets whir, chirp, buzz, and trill. The occasional sawyer beetle adds its chaw to
the humming siren of night. Honeybees stock up on liquid sweetness. True silence
comes after the first hard frost. The rhythm of light versus night incites change.

Our songbirds, well fed on a northern summer of bugs and ripe seeds, feel the obvious shift of the season and slowly disappear for winter in neotropical parts of Central
America. How they know when to return to the Little Finger Lakes, or anywhere
north, is still a great mystery wrapped up in weather shifts, magnetism, and other
senses scientists still don’t know about. Somehow, even the blue-gray gnatcatchers
recognize this change down at the equator; they know when the northern hemisphere
begins to tilt again toward the sun on its year-long, elliptical orbit. And each year their
migration is monitored shows them heading further north.

Circadian rhythms are natural cycles life attunes itself to in places on the earth where
daylight hours shift seasonally. Everything and everyone is affected, from the fungi
and cyanobacteria in the soil to plants, insects, birds, and animals—like us. Despite
the laggard but resultant solar cooling effect, it is actually the shortening length of
daylight, more so than the falling temperatures, that signal trees to shut down their
green chlorophyll factories, seal off their petiole stems, drop leaves. The low angles
of UV and ultraviolet light, at the far ends of the light spectrum, inform dragonflies to
troop together and prepare for their migration, much like monarch butterflies do.
...and I
made it!
Right now, even as earth moves a bit closer to the sun on its circular journey around
it, earth also begins a slow tilt away from the sun, chugging slowly toward the shortest
hours of daylight during the winter solstice. The equinox is time to take in the hush
from the tasks of summer and welcome back the darkness that call us to rest.
Despite this temporary balance of light vs. dark in our lives, the 24-hour-day is not an
exact clock in relation to the actual spin of the earth—a speed which has us moving at
about 1,000 miles per hour. And time does change—large earthquakes like the one in
Japan in 2011 actually caused an estimated increase in our spinning speed by about
1.8 milliseconds. For so many of us, life does seem to speed ahead at an accelerating
rate. Karen Thompson Walker’s fictional novel, The Age of Miracles, depicts a story of
life on earth where the spin is not speeded up (as it seems to be doing in reality), but
slowed to such a degree that darkness and light last days and weeks instead of hours.
People become fiercely divided over whether to stick to natural time or continue to
use the traditional 24-hour clock. It’s an interesting notion, natural time versus clock
time, one we northerners adjust to month by month and season by season.
Think about what a rare calamity of planetary measures causes leaves to change
color and squirrels to gather acorns. Think about it! Think about what an anomaly it
is that you can adhere to a planet spinning so fast while orbiting the sun, while at the
same time wobbling on an invisible axis that makes things as you know them—ripening apples, spiders laying egg sacks before their lives expire, luscious loads of fall
squashes—all possible. It’s enough to cause you to want to hang on tight, linger over
a long sensual lick of freshly tapped honey, slow down, and make a moment last.
