APOG presents 3rd Annual Geneseo Autumn-Wingfest
The Association for the Preservation of Geneseo (APOG) presents the third annual
Geneseo Autumn-Wingfest on Saturday, September 24, coinciding with Family
Weekend at SUNY Geneseo. The day will be filled with food, live music, contests,
pumpkin and face painting, student performances, and of course, chicken wings!
The Wingfest portion of the event will run from 12 to 3 p.m. on Center Street.
Restaurants from all over Livingston County will set up on Center Street with their
own specialty chicken wings to compete for the prestigious title of “Best Wing in
the Valley.” Tickets will cost $10 in advance and $15 the day of the event, and include a sample of wings from each restaurant. Tickets are available at apog.brownpapertickets.com. All proceeds go to fund the APOG Save the Wall Project.
There will be a wing-eating contest at 2 p.m., where brave individuals can compete
to be crowned the “Champion Chicken Chomper.” There will be a beer tent for individuals 21 and over, and “Wings To Go” for sale. Live music will be provided by
Groveland Station from 12 to 3 p.m. There will also be performances from SUNY
Geneseo student groups. The winning restaurant will be announced at 3 p.m. on
Center Street.
The Autumnfest portion of this event will run from 12 noon until 4 p.m. and include
several different fall-themed activities. At the corner of Bank Street will be a booth
for pumpkin decorating and face painting. At 3:30 p.m., following the announcement of the winner of “Best Wing in the Valley,” the annual Great Pumpkin Race
down Bank Street will begin! All are invited to join in this pumpkin-rolling race for
prizes! There will be prizes for the winner of each heat and a grand prize for the
overall winner.
There will also be a “Pumpkin Hunt” around Main Street, where businesses will
hold a pumpkin-decorating contest and have their final entries on display for guests
to judge. Guests will receive passport cards that include a list of all pumpkin locations, empty spaces next to each location to earn stamps, and a spot to vote on their
favorite pumpkin. After collecting enough stamps by visiting different pumpkins,
guests can then enter their card into a raffle for prizes valued at over $250! Winners
will be drawn at 4 p.m.
For those who cannot make it to Autumn-Wingfest, guests can pick up passport
cards at participating businesses and participate in the “Pumpkin Hunt” starting
Wednesday, September 21. There will be a booth set up from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on
the day of Autumn-Wingfest, where guests can pick up passport cards and enter
their cards into the raffle.
Brave individuals compete to be crowned “Champion Chicken Chomper.”

Hot air balloons have been a site in the skies over the valley since the 1800s. The
Flying Allens had their first flight in 1874 in Dansville—a story of dreams come to
life. Approximately 100 years later the festival was acknowledged as The New York
State Festival of Balloons.
Balloon launches are approximately at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. starting Friday afternoon
through Sunday evening. This year the festival includes music by Lucky Number
at the Friday evening Kick-Off Party. Jazz Saturday starts at 2 p.m. with the Southern Tier All-Star Jazz Band and at 6 p.m. Full Swing will entertain. Bluegrass Sunday features three groups: Sonic Landscape at 1 p.m., Dutch Hollow Band at 3 p.m.,
and Blind Owl Band at 4 p.m.
Thank you for letting us entertain you since 1921!
For more than a decade it has been the festival’s policy to share a portion of the
weekend profit with the local community. Since 2001 more than $180,000 has been
given to a variety of groups and agencies.

Livonia Fire Department to hold
9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
On September 11, the Livonia Fire Department will hold a remembrance ceremony
to commemorate the sacrifice of firefighters, police officers, and uniform military
personnel who lost their lives on 9/11/01 in the terrorist attacks on our country.
This is the 15th anniversary of those attacks and we must not forget what happened on that day or the terrible loss of life that resulted.
The ceremony will begin promptly at 9:45 a.m. at Fire District Headquarters located at 4213 South Livonia Road (Route 15), Livonia. Parking is very limited, but
on-site parking is available for the handicapped and media.
Free parking and shuttle service will be provided from the Livonia High School
beginning at 8:30 a.m. Shuttles will return attendees to the parking area immediately following the ceremony.
The Patriot Guard and representatives from fire departments from around the region will be participating as well as representatives from law enforcement and the
military. Also assisting with this memorial will be Livonia student musicians.
Keynote speakers will discuss the attacks that took place on 9/11/01, as well as
the many changes that have occurred to our nation since that time and the impact
on our daily lives.
The largest relic from Ground Zero in Western New York is the centerpiece of a
permanent monument located at the Livonia Fire Department. This 3900-pound
piece of steel and concrete that stands 14 feet tall and came from the World Trade
Center was dedicated on 9/11/2011, the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
Refreshments will be provided following the ceremony.

Springwater Music Fair expands with 2-day event
frozen custard made with fresh fruit, local fresh organic produce, or farm-fresh
eggs (including duck eggs)? Come and shop along our street of farmers, food producers, artists, and craftsmen. Take time to buy some award-winning kettle corn
and fill your pantry, root cellar, and cupboards as you enjoy our “fair!”
Nature will inspire your creativity while making a stick person with its own personality or a bark boat that floats, or choose from a variety of other hands-on activities.
Join in the music scene and shake, rattle, or roll with your very own homemade
music instrument.
Kids and adults of all ages can enjoy building their own fairy house. Use items from
your walk on the woodland trails at Punky Hollow or use materials from our woodland stash. Take your creation with you to enjoy in your very own garden.
The Springwater Fire Department’s firefighters will be on hand, with their fire
truck, to tell you about the fire truck and fire safety.
The 8th Annual Springwater Music Fair & American Crafts Show (formerly
known as the “Springwater Fiddlers Fair & American Crafts Show”) will be at
Punky Hollow Farm, 8277 Pardee Hollow Road, Wayland, on Saturday and Sunday,
September 17 and 18, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. It will be the same great
event as in past years with new features: now the fair is a two-day event that includes a larger performance tent with headliner bands scheduled, an expanded
events calendar throughout the two-day event, and more food and entertainment
abound! Admission is $10 per day, free for children under 10, and will go on rain
or shine. This year the celebration is in honor of the Springwater Bicentennial.
In two jam-packed days of music you will hear traditional old-time fiddling, as in
previous years, plus American roots, Irish, Zydeco, rockabilly, world-ternative, and
many more kinds of music ringing in the beautiful hills surrounding Springwater.
Music entertainment on Saturday will be Brothers Blue, The Dady Brothers, Li’l
Anne & the Hot Cayenne, and The Buddhahood. On Sunday will be Howie Lester
& Friends, Watkins & the Rapiers, The Crawdiddies, Bobby Henrie & the Goners,
and an all-music jam from 4:30 to 5:30 with Dutch Hollow Girls, Buffalo Suzuki
String Kids, Tasty Parker, Knives and Forks, Allen Hopkins and Jim Clare, The
String Chickens, and more.
If you play an instrument, learn something new in one of the workshops and join in
the fun at one of our jamming tents with Howie Lester and blues fiddle, Mark Weeg
and bluegrass fiddle, Ben Haravitch with clawhammer banjo; Joe Dady with the
pennywhistle, or John Dady teaching songwriting.
The kids can join Cathy McGrath for a highly active family program of favorite traditional singing games and songs. Everyone will dance, clap, and sing in a celebration of creative movement, self-expression, and friendly cooperation. Cathy uses
her guitar, banjo, lumberjack puppets, a flute, and a pennywhistle in her program.
New for 2016—the Suzuki String kids will be having a Suzuki Strings Petting Zoo,
allowing other kids to explore their string instruments. Experience the thrill of
plucking a string or playing with a bow on your favorite string instrument.
The artists who exhibit with us say this is their favorite show. One thing’s for certain—they have become family to us. And every year we add to this amazing talent
by finding new and exciting arts and crafts from the Finger Lakes Region. You’ll
love strolling around Punky Hollow, selecting the most unique gifts: cigar box guitars, gourd art, Native American story paintings, repurposed animal feed bags,
hand-blown glass, folk art crafts, basketry, photography, paintings, sculpture, jewelry, clothing, beadwork, pottery, woodworking, textiles, furniture, spoons, pillows
and soaps, leatherwork, metal, and stone.
Our Springwater Music Fair food vendors will delight you with everything from
fresh healthy local seasonal Finger Lakes dining, to a locally-owned family restaurant with award-winning family recipes and nightly house specials to down-to-earth
right-off-the-grill hots, hamburgers, sausages, not to mention funnel cakes and fried
dough. Now you can top all this off with a great cup of coffee and your choice from
many fabulous baked goods and a variety of ice creams.
Our Springwater Music Fair food processors and farmers will provide you with an
array of freshly prepared jams, jellies, and pickles hand-packed from family recipes.
We will have maple syrup from the trees of Springwater and the surrounding Finger
Lakes Area along with many maple products, including Maple Fluff. How about
Seating is limited, so please bring your own chairs. No dogs, other than service
dogs, and no alcoholic beverages are allowed on the grounds.

The Springwater Music Fair and American Crafts Show is an all-volunteer, not-forprofit organization brought about to promote the love of music and crafts in the Finger
Lakes Region.
This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a re-grant
program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew
Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley
Council on the Arts at the Livingston Arts Center, a member supported organization.

Editor‘s Note: Last year eight-year-old Hayden McLean of Rochester wrote an
essay for a school assignment describing his experience at the 2015 Springwater Fiddlers Fair & American Crafts Show. He recently mailed it to me. Here
is his essay:
A child’s perspective—
“Fiddlers Fair Fun”
by Hayden McLean
One day my mom and I went to Grandma’s house so all of us could go to the
(Springwater) Fiddlers Fair.
On the way to the Fiddlers Fair we almost ran out of gas, so since we didn‘t
have much gas, we coasted down the hills. Soon we came to a gas station.
Phew! At last we got there! Well, not quite. We had to park our car, get out,
and go on a bus to go there.
The first thing we did when we got there: we ate. I had such mouth-watering food! I had an Italian sausage, Pepsi, Cheetos, and we shared a funnel
cake. Yum!
Soon we checked out some booths. The first one was the candy one. Mom
said I could only have one piece. I got strawberry pop rocks. Yum! One of
the other booths had guitars made out of cigar boxes and toilet seats! The
last booth we went to was the kids’ arts and crafts. I made about five crafts:
1) a straw flute, 2) this thing that you bob up and down, 3) an egg shaker,
4) a fairy house, and 5) a bark boat (really floats)!
Soon we watched the fiddlers fiddle. My mom and I were still hungry so we
got a taco. I just loved it! Soon it was time to go. Man, I just can’t wait ’til the
next Fiddlers Fair!

Finger Lakes Fiber Festival—more than just a party
spinning, how to skirt a fleece, basics of spindle spinning—all these and more are
free learning opportunities at the festival.
Vendors, too, are admitted with care. A wide variety of wares is desired so that
people new to any craft can find the basics while the more experienced have a great
chance to locate the hard-to-find items they need. Quality and variety abound—raw
and processed fiber of all types, brand name and indie-maker yarn and tools, books
and DVDs, synthetic and natural dyestuffs, patterns and kits, buttons, every kind of
yarn imaginable, beads and finished goods, too. All vendors must have the great
bulk of their wares oriented to fiber pursuits in one manner or another to even be
considered for a space.
The acronym for the Finger Lakes Fiber Festival—FLFF—could just as easily stand
for Friendly Learning Fiber Festival. The FLFF, sponsored by the Genesee Valley
Handspinners Guild, holds all the same attractions as the really big festivals—
classes, vendors, competitions, exhibits, demonstrations, designated areas to informally hobnob with other spinners and such folk—but these parts are all designed
to function together as a two-day educational excursion into spinning, knitting,
weaving and all the other fiber arts. Held the third full weekend of September (the
17th and 18th this year) at the Hemlock Fairgrounds in Hemlock, this festival
prides itself on a friendly and nurturing atmosphere that encourages all attendees
to learn something new.
The mission of the Genesee Valley Handspinners Guild is to “preserve the ancient art of handspinning by increasing our understanding and improving our
own skills, and to share this knowledge with all regardless of age and/or gender.”
The guild has taken this mission to heart and created the festival, not just for people already immersed in fiber pursuits, but to attract and educate the wider public. Now in its 22nd year, the festival’s enthusiastic steering committee works
tirelessly to craft an event that makes beginners feel welcome, and experienced
crafters feel appreciated.
Classes are a cornerstone of the festival and teacher proposals are carefully considered. While a definite focus is given to beginner and advanced techniques in handspinning, a cross section of other disciplines is selected, too—knitting, weaving,
felting, crochet, and more. It’s a rare fiber artist who doesn’t practice multiple fiber
pursuits and often one craft leads to another. Recognizing that not all festival attendees want to devote a block of time to a class, the FLFF also boasts a very large
roster of free demonstrations throughout the weekend which perfectly suits the
“watch and learn” type of student. How to handle specific fibers, how to use particular tools, multiple felting methods, weaving on different types of looms, charka
The FLFF also hosts guilds and clubs of other disciplines so that one may find and
network with people who focus on different but related crafts. These include guilds
for weaving, knitting, lace making, rug hooking, other spinning guilds, master gardeners (as many dyers grow their own plant materials), rug hookers, sock-knitting
machine users, and even a rabbit rescue group with lots of helpful information on
rabbit husbandry to aid established or would-be angora bunny owners.
The competitions—the Skein and Garment Show and the Fleece Show—are designed to give entrants and onlookers pertinent information, not just scorecard
numbers and ribbons. These competitions are not limited to guild members! Entries are encouraged from near and far, and provisions can be made for mailing
items. The judges selected by the festival committee are experts in their fields and
give helpful and encouraging feedback on all entries. The display of entries is carefully arranged so that each item shows to best advantage, and inspiration fairly leaps
off the stage to even the most casual observer. Beautiful, functional, whimsical, excellence of technique, artistic, innovative, daring—all these terms can be applied to
the display of entries and all are accurate. Sponsors wishing to recognize and show
appreciation for items in a myriad of categories (such as Best Novice Spindle Spun
Skein, Excellence in Knitting, Best Felted Wearable Article, Best Handwoven Article including Handspun Yarn, and the Vernabelle Freund Memorial Award for Best
Lace Article Made With Handspun to name just a few) donated over $800 in cash
and prizes in 2015. Fleeces that have been judged and are for sale will have helpful
comments to guide buyers to the right fiber for their projects.
A legion of volunteers is organized to make sure events run smoothly. From parking cars and overseeing demonstrations to manning the information booth and directing students to classes, each volunteer works to make things run smoothly and
provide a low-stress environment conducive to engaging in the many interesting
opportunities provided.

Local historians to present “A Celebration of Little Lakes History”
Come, relive a piece of our local history at a special event at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday,
September 11, at the Jack Evans Community Center at 4705 Main Street in Hemlock. The event is free and open to the public. Donations to help defray expenses
will be welcome.
Doug Morgan, Lima Historian and our guest speaker, will present on the glorious
past of Hemlock and Canadice Lakes. Doug has studied the region’s history for
many decades and puts on a very entertaining show.
Historians from Hemlock, Canadice, Conesus, Richmond, and Springwater will also
be present with interactive displays and presentations about their towns.
Margaret and David Bott have been the historians of Canadice for decades now and
have compiled a vast knowledge of the rich history of Canadice. Did you know that
there was a newspaper called the Canadice Chronicle? Did you know that there was
a Coykendall Hotel in Canadice that had a ballroom?
Lore and Vince Disalvo, of the Friends of Long Point Park, will show restored photos of the steamships that served Conesus Lake until the early part of the last century. Did you know that the propeller from the steamboat “McPherson” was found
on the bottom of Conesus Lake? Did you know that there was an aviation school
at McPherson Point circa 1915?
Rick Osiecki will talk of the history of Hemlock lake and village. Did you know that
the first train to arrive at the Hemlock station was in 1896? Do you know why there
was a road that ran the entire length of the east shore of Hemlock lake? Did you
know that the sewage from the cottages on Hemlock lake was collected in buckets
and removed to preserve the quality of the lake waters?
Joy Lewis is the Richmond Historian and will be wearing an authentic dress from
the 1870s. Did you know that Honeoye Lake was once considered to become a
reservoir for the City of Rochester? Have you ever heard of the Fiddlers Picnic
that ran for decades and was started at the Reed homestead? Did you know that
Frederick Douglass once spoke at the United Church of Christ in Honeoye?
Judy Tripp-Neu is the Springwater Historian and will tell us about the Springwater
Bicentennial being celebrated with ongoing events planned for this whole year. Did
you know that the Miller Lure Company of Springwater produced fishing lures for
30 years? Did you know that the Cannon Factory produced earphone headsets that
were used in the World War? Did you know that Clara Mack of Springwater wrote
her stories and published them in a book called Thoughts by a Country Woman?
We all know that Hemlock Lake has long been a
reservoir for the City of Rochester. But, did you
know that it once was ringed by cottages with inns,
steamships, and hotels ready to cater to the throngs
of visitors each summer? Lima Town Historian
Douglas Morgan will take us on a slide show of the
history of Hemlock Lake and how it went from a
wealthy playground to a public sanctuary.
You may know Hemlock and Canadice Lakes as pristine waters nestled in lush,
wooded hillsides, where the loudest sounds may be the call of a loon, or the stroke
of a canoe paddle. For over 100 years they have been the water reservoirs for the
City of Rochester. But did you know that not so long ago the lakes were a mecca
for summer visitors and were surrounded by hundreds of cottages and large elegant hotels served by trains from Rochester and beyond? Steamships plied the
waters, delivering guests to their destinations around the lakes. Even before the
railroad era, the lakes were the home of our resilient ancestors who lived in small
hamlets, with saw mills and flour mills, churches and schools, all of which have
long ago disappeared.
Luckily for those of us who are interested in the past, the history of our area is well
preserved in photographs, paintings, narratives and artifacts, which have been lovingly preserved by dedicated historians from our surrounding communities. Come
to see what they have worked so hard to preserve.
Prior to the historical event, a chicken barbecue with all the fixings will be available,
from Smitty’s Catering of Springwater, starting at 12:30 p.m. The cost of tickets for
the meal—which includes a half chicken, salt potatoes, beans, coleslaw, and a roll—
is $10 each. Tickets are available by calling Mary Lester at 585-259-7115, Mike
Barnard at 585-703-9890, or Rick Osiecki at 585-472-6300.

Naples Grape Festival offers
everything grape and more!
Since 1961, the Naples Grape Festival is held every September in the Naples Valley
to celebrate the area’s grape harvest, talented artisans, winemakers, local and
regional music, and cuisine. This year’s festival will be on Saturday and Sunday,
September 24 and 25, from 10 a.m. ’til 5 p.m., at the Naples High School grounds
and across the street at Memorial Town Hall, rain or shine.
Over the years the festival has showcased the finest artisans of the Finger Lakes.
All of the art displays are reviewed by a jury of independent artists to insure the
selections for sale are handmade and high quality. The exhibits offer a large variety of merchandise for sale on both the Memorial Town Hall and the Naples High
School grounds.
Local and regional musical artists and bands will perform both days, providing an
assortment of rock, blues, jazz, and original music to get your feet tapping and your
heart singing. Performers on Saturday include Susanna Rose, Ronnie Lickers,
Woody Dodge, and Funky Blu Roots; on Sunday is Emily Ann Capicchioni, Jim
Drew, Ruddy Well Band, and Funkout.
Judging for “The World’s Greatest Grape Pie Contest,” sponsored by Joseph’s Wayside Market, begins Saturday at noon. Winners will be announced and presented
with trophies and checks at the end of the judging.
Festivals and great food go together, and this festival has a marvelous selection
of edibles to choose from. A wide variety of food vendors will offer something for
everyone’s palate.
And what would a grape festival be without wine? For a $15 admission, you can
sample wines on sale by any of the vendors at the wine-tasting tent behind Memorial Town Hall; sealed bottles of wine will be for sale at each winery table. (Please
sample moderately and keep in mind that no alcoholic beverages may be consumed
on the grounds of Memorial Town Hall or the Naples High School outside the winetasting tent.)

Livingston Arts to host openings of two artists
Livingston Arts will host the opening of two member artists
at the Apartment One Gallery on Thursday, September 1,
from 5 to 7 p.m. There is no charge and the public is welcome at the opening reception.
The opening will highlight the work of Patrice Case in
“Thinking Out Loud” (metal and clay) and Terry Finch in
“Imagination Creation” (digitally-enhanced photography).
Case has been a member of the SUNY Geneseo Faculty since
1989. Her specializations are silversmithing, metalwork, and
contemporary jewelry design. She has exhibited her work in
12 states throughout the country and in Cobá, Mexico.
“Every little crack in the pavement, the texture of gravel, or
pile of pebbles becomes inspiration for my art”, states Case.
She describes her newest exhibit as “less material specific
than my previous metal work. It is more expressive and
with an attitude of fresh play.”
Finch is a self-taught photographer from Wayland. Since his
retirement, he has made constant companions of his camera
and computer. He is also an avid user of social media, extending his reach nationally. “The title ‘Imagination Creation’
speaks to the span from a photograph to the final image.
The photograph becomes a starting point in my work,” says
Finch, who is also self-taught in many advanced graphics
programs.
The exhibit will be on display at Livingston Arts, 4 Murray
Hill Drive, Mount Morris, from September 1 through October 29. Gallery hours are 12:00–4:00 p.m., Tuesday through
Friday; and 11:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., Saturday. The public is welcome to attend. Admission is free, donations are welcome,
and memberships are available. For more information, mail
