Naked
M.P. man
accosts
drivers
By Rosemary Horvath
Correspondent
A naked and disorderly
32-year-old Mt. Pleasant
man was apprehended by
Isabella County Deputies last Thursday after he
attempted to enter at least
two vehicles near West
M-20 and Winn Road in
Deerfield Township.
According to a release
from the Isabella County
Sheriff Michael Main,
deputies were dispatched
to the location around 1
p.m. March 26.
The man, whose name
has not been released
pending his arraignment
in 76th District Court, was
reportedly “running in and
out of traffic on M-20.
While enroute, deputies
reported they were told the
man may have been struck
by one, or more vehicles.
Reportedly the man had
attempted to enter two
vehicles traveling through
the area. The first vehicle
contained a man, his wife
and two children, a threeyear-old and a three-month
old. The suspect reportedly demanded the driver
open his door. The driver
refused and drove away.
He said the man fell and
he might have run over the
suspect’s foot. After driving a safe distance from
the suspect, the driver
called 9-1-1.
The suspect then “ran
up to another vehicle with
a female driver, yelling
at her while grabbing his
penis, deputies reported.
When deputies arrived
and attempted to subdue
the man, he refused their
orders and aggressively
approached the officers. A
first attempt to use a Taser
was not successful, deputies reported, but a second
deputy was able to use his
Taser to bring the man to
the ground, where deputies
attempted to handcuff the
man who was resisting.
“During the struggle the
man stated that he was on
Methamphetamine,” the
release said.
When the deputies were
finally able to handcuff the
man and place him into a
patrol unit, he reportedly
began “to bang his head
against the window” and
he had to be further restrained for his own safety.
The deputies were not
injured, although one
deputy’s uniform was
damaged during the altercation.
A deputy and State
Trooper checked the
suspect’s residence near
the incident and found a
broken window and open
door. They entered and
found a large amount of

Clare County Commissioners decided to look
into installing time clocks
at the County Building to
register when all employees arrive and leave for
work or don’t come in.
Discussion is expected
to continue at the April
20 board meeting.
The option surfaced
from a so-called snow
day Feb. 24 when Governor Snyder had all state
administrative offices
in the Lower Peninsula
closed due to significant
snowfall. 80th District Court
Judge Josh Farrell had
courts and offices closed
in Harrison. The County
Building, which houses
county offices such as
clerk and treasurer, did not
close. All offices remained
open except for the prosecutor’s office.
Only a month before,
county commissioners established board policy not
to close for snow days.
A few commissioners
were not happy over the
judge’s action Feb. 24. In
their view, board Chairman
Jack Kleinhardt is the only
one authorized to have the
County Building closed,
including courts.
They were further
disgruntled that employees
in the court offices turned
in pay stubs and were paid
automatically.
Commissioner Don David said he had contacted
Judge Farrell’s office but
that no one would talk to
him. “He refused to talk
to us. We should ask the
administrator to come up
here. This is getting out of
hand and I’m getting tired
of it.”
Commissioner Karen
Lipovsky agreed. Chairman Kleinhardt
said it was “irresponsible”
on the governor’s part to
shut down all state and
federal offices across the
Lower Peninsula “when
one-third of the state didn’t
have snow.”
Karen Willing, district
court court administrator,
said in a phone interview
Wednesday, court offices
are a separate entity from
the County Building. “We
are in one building but we
are separate.”
Evidence of this is the
fact members of the public
entering the judicial section of the building are
required to pass through
security screening managed by sheriff deputies.
Security is not required to

P&R hopes to get $200K grant for complex
By Pat Maurer

The Clare City Commission gave its unanimous approval March 21
to apply for a Michigan
Department of Natural
Resource Trust Fund
grant for $200,000 for the
planned new recreation
complex on the south side
of the city.
In his agenda report,
City Manager Ken Hibl
recommended the city
approval. “The City Staff
strongly recommends
that the City apply for
the grant opportunity to
augment currently available fund sources (bond,
millage, already-received
grant funds and in-kind
support ($400,000) from
the Operator’s Union)
to construct and develop
the City’s new recreation
complex.” He said the
City’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board also
recommended approval to
submit the grant.
Hibl said the maximum
amount of funds for a

approach county offices.
As for the Feb. 24 snow
day, Willing said the decision to close was based
on a state of emergency.
Judge Farrell had conferred
with administrators in the
early hours and decided to
follow the governor’s lead.
Willing added that all local
schools and colleges had
closed.
“We’d like to see
one voice but it was our
understanding that each
department is free to make
a choice,” she said, adding
that Judge Farrell as chief
judge has authority over
the courts. On the occasion court
offices are closed, notices
can be added to the county
website. Messages also can
be added to voice answering system and notices are
sent to respective departments such as Department
of Corrections.
Willing added that
decisions regarding district
court are made independently between the offices in Clare and Gladwin
counties.
An unrelated Feb.
24 event compounding
the board’s ire was over a
prank committed by an unidentified source someone
who broadcast the song
“Take This Job and Shove
It,” over the intercom at
the County Building. A
department head had to
approve it, commissioners
speculated.

money and also a cellular
phone on the ground.
The suspect was
transported to McLaren
Hospital Emergency for
“evaluation and injury assessment.”
A source at the Sheriff’s
Department said Wednesday afternoon that the man
had not been brought back
from the hospital yet.
Deputies were assisted
at the scene by Michigan
State Police troopers,
Fremont Township First
Response, Mobile Medical
Response and Deerfield
Township Fire Department.
The incident is still under investigation. Charges
are pending with the Isabella County Prosecutor’s
office.
Gelios nephew head

John C. and Deborah
Smith of DeWitt, MI,
are pleased to announce
the engagement of their
daughter, Elizabeth Ann,
to Travis John Pohl, son of
Edward and Sue Pohl of
Farwell, MI.
Elizabeth is a graduate
of DeWitt High School
and Grand Valley State
University receiving her
BSN. She is employed
as a registered nurse at
Spectrum Health System
in Grand Rapids.
Travis is a graduate of
Farwell High School and
Central Michigan Univer-
sity receiving his BSBA.
He is employed as an accountant at Progressive AE
in Grand Rapids.
A May 2016 wedding is
planned in DeWitt.
Clare County Commissioner Jim Gelios
says the family “couldn’t
be prouder of him,”
when referring to his
nephew David P. Gelios,
head of the FBI Detroit
Division.
The Gelios nephew
has been in the news as
special agent in charge
of the million dollar
bribery scandal involving
14 former and current
principals and assistant
principals in Detroit
Public Schools and a
suburban school supply
vendor. Bribes have been
paid out over 13 years a
two-year investigation
alleges.
The Gelios family has
produced a squad of its
own, so to speak. Jim
retired from the Macomb
County Sheriff’s Department inn 1990. His late
brother had worked for
the Oak Park Police Department. It was he who
influenced Jim’s career.
Jim’s son James R.
Gelios followed in his
father’s footsteps at the
same department. He retired about 10 years ago.
Jim couldn’t say who
influenced David or why
he entered law enforcement. Law enforcement
“was in the family. If we
got together, we didn’t
talk about it. We didn’t
live it 24/7.”
Crash leaves Lake man dead
By Pat Maurer

A medical emergency
may have contributed to
a one-vehicle crash at the
corner of Eight Point Lake
Road and Lake Station
Avenue in Lake late last
Thursday.
James Ruth, 55 of Lake
was reportedly southbound
on Lake Station Avenue
when his vehicle went off
the road around 5 p.m.
March 24 at a low speed,
according to a release from
the Michigan State Police.
Ruth was pronounced
dead at the scene after first
responders attempted to
resuscitate him.
Troopers said alcohol did
not appear to have been a
factor in the accident, which
is still under investigation.
Troopers were assisted
at the scene by Garfield

After debate, BOC agrees to fund deputy clerk
By Rosemary Horvath
Correspondent
Clare County animal
control has a part-time 25
hour a week kennel worker
position to fill. Deadline
for application is April
15. An application can be
submitted on the county
website.
Commissioners at their
March 22 board meeting also authorized Pam
Mayfield, county clerk/
register of deeds/circuit
court clerk/abstractor, to
fill the position of chief
deputy clerk and to move
a part-time employee to
full-time. She estimated
the cost will be $68,000
more a year.
Mayfield acknowledged
the chief deputy will be
made aware employment
could be short-lived if
she is defeated. Mayfield
seeks re-election this year
and has two challengers
already so far.
Peggy Dundas is a chief
deputy but her office is
entitled to a second one.
Commissioners at the time
she first took office nearly
eight years ago nixed a
hiring. A few years ago
Mayfield hired three parttime employees to replace
a person who retired.
Circuit Court clerical duties are handled by a staff
of three but there are now
two judges.
And the office acts
as a collection agency
when defendants skip out
on paying court costs.
Mayfield said the money
collected doesn’t cover the
time spent on tracking the
people.
Because this is an unusually crowded election
year the office is understaffed. After the presidential primary in March,
there is an election in May,
the primary in August and
the general election in
November, all of which
the clerk oversees.
Plus, Lansing lawmakers continue to dump
added responsibility. “These are mandated
offices. They say you shall
do it,” she said, adding
“we are at a critical spot.” Board Chairman Jack
Kleinhardt suggested delaying action until budget
time in a few months.
Mayfield firmly objected
and said a delay would
depot and erected donated
signs.
The township board on
Monday authorized the
grant submission in a vote
3 to 2, according to township Supervisor David
Byl. Trustees Mark Irwin
and Lisa Roland dissented.
Contacted afterward,
Irwin explained he doesn’t
oppose either the project
or the township’s responsibility for subsequent maintenance. He does question,
however, the township’s
pledge of $98,000 as
a local match. He said
wording in the application
“tells me if they don’t get
enough sponsors the township is responsible to come
up with the money.”
Other officials disagree
that would happen.
Voting in favor of the
grant application were
Byl, clerk Joan Farwell
and treasurer Robin Yarhouse.
The township board
held a public hearing on
March 23 to answer questions related to the project.
A major snowstorm that
day prevented a DNR of-
ficial from attending, but a
large group from the area
attended. Byl said there
was overwhelming support
except for one audience
member.
“Last year, the township entered into a no-cost
lease with Michigan
Department of Natural
Resources for the property
that connects to townshipowned property,” explained Byl.
This combined area
designated as the future
trail head extends from
Lake Station Avenue to
Gibson Avenue.
“This is a golden opportunity to promote tourism
and the health of the township,” added Byl. A parks committee has
spearheaded the development plan along with a
5-year recreation plan
completed in 2015 that assesses and makes plans for
all township parks. Rowe
Professional Services of
Mt. Pleasant facilitated the
master plan.
The state trust fund is a
reimbursement program.
No funds are provided up-
south-east near the intersection of Lake Station.
The Manton man was
taken to a Cadillac Hospital with a non-life threatening injury.
The driver, passenger
and patient in the back of
the ambulance were not
injured.

be unfair, especially since
commissioners had already
agreed to putting $10,000
toward an airport authority and approved a request
from the sheriff’s department for more patrol cars.
“It would not be fair
to make her wait,” said
Commissioner Jim Gelios.
Commissioner Don David
agreed, saying “We need
to take care of it now.”
After a lengthy discussion, Commissioner Dale
Majewski moved to hire a
chief deputy/register and
to move a current parttime worker to full-time
immediately. The move
will be reevaluated at
budget time. Seconded
by Commissioner David,
the motion passed unanimously.
In other business, the
county board:
APPROVED having
the sheriff’s department
enter into a 3-year finance
program to receive nine
patrol units at a cost of
$123,100 per year. Cars
will be delivered immediately but the first payment
is due Oct. 15. Sheriff
John Wilson said engines
on the Chevrolet police
cars bought in 2009 and
2011 haven’t held up and
maintenance costs are
rising. Wilson added that
revenue from jail rentals
has increased and can be
put toward this expense.
Commissioner David said
this option “is the best
way to go. This will cut
expenses.” Undersheriff
Dwayne Miedzianowski
said the department will
begin a rotation using the
nine. Commissioner Gelios suggested leasing four

the vote came around, he

front. Grant recipients are
announced in December.
Since the fund was
established in 1976, Clare
County has received nine
grants and Osceola County
has received 11. Money
in the trust fund is derived
from sale of oil, gas and
mineral leases and royalties from their extraction
on state lands. Sheryl Pressler, RESD supt., addressed the Board of
Commissioners, seeking their support for the RESD millage that is on the May ballot.
Garfield votes to request $228K for trailhead
By Rosemary Horvath

Garfield Township will
request $228,400 from
the Michigan Natural
Resources Trust Fund to
help establish a trailhead
at the Lake Station Depot
to serve yearround users of
the Pere Marquette State
Trail.
The application contains a 30 percent local
match of $98,000 as the
township’s share. This will
come from money raised
from foundations, corporations, individuals and
in-kind contributions. The
township board has the
option of turning down a
grant, postponing or scaling back the project if the
pledge is unobtainable.
A trailhead is a resting
place for cyclists in warm
weather and snowmobilers
in cold weather. Plans include shade areas, benches, universal-access picnic
tables, restrooms, parking

snowmobilers. Township volunteers already have refurbished the

With an easy-going and welcoming demeanor, Dr. Horsley is easy to talk to. He
also has an intensity and drive that serves his patients well. “Whether a patient

Bits & Pieces
Pat Maurer, Review Correspondent
Don’t waste your money
on new Fishburne,
movie
The eagerly anticipated
Kevin Costner,
Superman vs Batman: The
Dawn of Justice movie debuted at theatre screens last
week. Unlike the Star Wars
sequel that was widely
loved and grossed well
over a billion dollars its
opening weekend a couple
of months ago, Superman
vs Batman is 150 minutes
of torture.
Torture both on the
screen where fighting and
special effects far outweigh
any semblance of a plot.
Torture for those who have
to sit through this mess of
a movie that has lousy acting, lousy screenplay and
was far too long to hold my
interest.
If it sounds like I’m
pissed, you guessed right.
I was geeked to see this
movie- much of it had
been filmed at locations
in Michigan that I was
familiar with. Then there
was the newspaper setting.
Clark Kent and Lois Lane
work for the Daily Planet,
and anything having to
do with my profession is
intriguing to me.
The idea that Superman
and Batman would appear
in the same movie as bitter
enemies was appealing as
well. But even that really
didn’t develop until half
way through the movie.
The mass of great actors
that were to make cameo
roles- Like Laurence
Holly Hunter and Diane
Lane made for a can’t miss
movie- so I thought.
I thought wrong. We
have seen a slew of actors
play Bruce Wayne and
Batman, and let me tell
you all of them performed
better than Ben Affleck.
Overweight, awkward
and with a Batman voice
you couldn’t understand,
Affleck was totally out of
his element. Gosh I really
yearned for a return of Michael Keaton. Henry Cavill
wasn’t much better as
Superman. Director Zach
Snyder had what appeared
to be an all-star cast, but
only gleaned minor league
performances from them.
If you like non-stop action certainly this move is
a must-see. But even an action guy like me grew wary
of action scene after action
scene with no real effort
to build on a plot that was
uncertain from the very beginning. Three quarters of
the way through the movie,
we were all of a sudden
introduced to Wonder
Woman, and it all started to
make sense to me.
This wasn’t really a
movie but a 2 ½ hour
trailer for the next movie
to come. DC Comics is
trying to emulate the wildly
successful Marvel Comics
Avenger movies. Wonder
Woman made her appear-
We had a great time, but
it’s good to be home
ance as a precursor to the
sequel, which will more
than likely have her, Batman and other characters in
DC Comics Justice League
patrol Earth to rid the
planted of evil beings.
That’s assuming however, that a sequel is to be
made. I’m not the only
critic that lambasted Superman vs Batman. Rotten Tomatoes on a scale of 100,
came in at 26. Supposedly
it took over a billion dollars to make and after the
first weekend only $166
million had been recovered at the box office. The
second movie in the series
is already made- Wonder
Woman, but after that the
series might be canned.
There is already talk of
firing Snyder as director. I
would show the door to Affleck and Cavill as well.
As regular consumers,
we don’t necessarily heed
the advice of movie critics,
but in this instance I would
unequivocally tell you to
stay away from this movie.
It’s definitely not worth the
admission fee.
Parents who host, lose the most
By Goldie Wood, Prevention & Outreach Manager, Ten 16 Recovery Network
Family Bonding is important
I survived the empty nest syndrome and I’m not exaggerating when I warn you about how fast your kids will
grow up. Before the next few years fly by and your kids
spread their wings to fly out of your nest, make sure you
make the most of this upcoming year with these family
bonding ideas.
Have a Family
Movie of the Week
Cook (and eat) a
Family Meal
Alternate between “parents pick” and “kids pick”
to choose your film -- and
don’t forget to throw in
home movies occasionally
for a special treat! Set the
mood with theme decorations and let movie magic
take you away. Then pop
some corn, get cozy, and
visit favorite old characters or meet new ones as
you laugh, cry, learn, and
explore together. After the
movie, talk about what
you’ve seen, emphasizing
any teachable moments
that took place.
The kitchen is the
symbolic heart of a home,
the place where everyone
comes together to smell
simmering sauces, listen
to natural chit-chat, and of
course taste the delicious
meals. Eat dinner together
at least three to four nights
a week, and you’ll be doing your family a favor:
Regular dinnertime conversations are also linked
with more open communication between kids and
parents.
Volunteer as a Family
Make a list of various
ways that you want to
help others this year, and
then figure out a plan to
make them happen. From
participating in a charity
walk to collecting used
blankets, towels, and toys
for an animal shelter, there
are endless possibilities of
ways to help.
When the whole family
is involved in planning
fun activities, you’ll have
more opportunities to experience special moments.
“Family glue” is what Pat
Tanner Nelson, professor of Human Development & Family Studies at
University of Delaware,
calls those moments
that connect your family
and build deep, healthy
relationships. “Spending
time together as a family
takes planning, but it’s a
good investment,” Nelson
says. “When children feel
close to their parents, they
try harder to please them
and make them proud,
which then makes the
whole family stronger.”
It doesn’t have to be
complicated -- with a little
bit of effort, you can turn
bonding into a lifetime of
funny, sweet stories and
lasting memories.
Plant a Family Garden
Encourage everyone to
get their hands dirty by
digging a patch to plant
flowers or vegetables in
the backyard. Tuck tender
seedlings into the ground
and watch them grow and
blossom -- like your kids
are doing every day. As
they witness green shoots
turn into stunning plants,
your whole family will
gain a new respect for the
natural world, all while
learning patience and
perseverance as you divvy
up the tasks of keeping the
garden weed-free, wellwatered, and strong.
Put Down Devices
You’ve probably heard
this one before, but it
seems our addiction to
electronics is getting worse
and worse. Make this the
year that you make a strict
rule in the household. No
phones, computers, and
other devices at mealtime.
It’s amazing how refreshing and rewarding it is to
have a conversation with
actual eye contact. In other
words, connect by disconnecting.
When the whole family
is involved in planning fun
activities, you’ll have more
opportunities to experience special moments. It’s
the “Family glue,” those
moments that connect your
family and build deep,
healthy relationships.
Spending time together as
a family takes planning,
but it’s a good investment.
When children feel close
to their parents, they try
harder to please them and
make them proud, which
then makes the whole family stronger. It doesn’t have
to be complicated -- with a
little bit of effort, you can
turn bonding into a lifetime
of funny, sweet stories and
lasting memories.
The
I’m still operating on
California/Arizona/Nevada
time.
We just returned from
a week full of a “flurry”
of activities – our vacation – sort of, and boy am I
pooped…
Nine members of this
Michigan family flew
across the country last week
to attend granddaughter
Mandy’s wedding in California, and six of us – The
four Thayers and us old
folks – managed to squeeze
in a few other things including a trip to the Grand
Canyon, a brief visit in Los
Vegas, a tour of Hoover
Dam and a road trip around
Lake Mead and through the
“Valley of Fire.”
It was a “hoot” traveling
with those crazy kids, and
I don’t just mean with the
granddaughters, although
they entertained us all
along the way. Between
their antics and those of the
parents – Terry and Lisa,
we certainly didn’t have a
single minute to be bored.
We flew out to Vegas in
a somewhat “bumpy” jet
ride last week on Tuesday,
jumped into a rental minivan and headed out to the
Grand Canyon.
That car was packed! Six
riders and nine or ten suitcases! It was like a jigsaw
puzzle to fit us – and the
luggage all in.
It took a couple of
hours to get there and then
I couldn’t believe that it
took these senior citizens
70 years to see one of the
most magnificent things this
country has to offer. I just
wish we hadn’t waited so
long because with a little
more energy, we could have
spent even more time there
and done a bit more “hik-
ing” than we could manage
this trip.
It was a long ride there,
but worth every second,
even waiting for three-quarters of an hour to get in.
I have seen pictures,
even movies of the Grand
Canyon, but being there
was a magnificent and awe
inspiring experience that
we will never forget. It is
so huge and so beautiful
that you just can’t possibly
describe it.
There’s helicopter rides
too. More than our budget
could handle this trip, but
you can bet a return trip
and ride over the Colorado River there is on our
“bucket list!”
We stayed in Williams
and all the next day headed
southwest to California.
Then it was three days of
getting ready for the big
event with Mandy and Max
saying their vows outdoors
in the high desert surrounded by a circle of mountains.
She is our first grandchild to get married and
since she and her sister
Samantha and brother
Jayson have all lived with
us at one time or another, it
was a bit heart wrenching
(for me at least) to see them
all together and all grown
up and now one of them
married.
Alea and Alison were
bridesmaids, and greatgranddaughter Ayssa was
a flower girl and I have
to admit I got pretty teary
eyed…they were so beautiful!
After the ceremony it
was loads of delicious food
(almost all prepared by the
groom), music, dancing and
fun!
Then after a much
needed nights sleep, it was
Letters
another long ride back to
Vegas where we took up
residence for a couple of
days at the historic Flamingo Hotel, where Terry
and Lisa both tried to “win”
the cost of that helicopter
ride…without much luck
I’m afraid.
We had a free day before
the flight home, so went to
see the Hoover Dam, another totally amazing – and
unbelievably huge spectacle. No words can describe
that experience either.
Instead of driving right
back to Vegas, we found
a back road that wound
around through some
truly beautiful country. The
desert was blooming and
the mountains we drove
through were absolutely
amazing.
I didn’t think we could
see more beautiful country,
and then we did! For about
20 miles we drove through
shades of red, white and
black mountain country –
The Valley of Fire.
There were picture opportunities everywhere and
I wore out the batteries on
my little camera before we
made it all the way through.
We made it back to the
hotel through an amazing
windstorm even, and collapsed for the evening.
Good thing too as we
were up bright and early
packing up for the long ride
home.
We were gone for eight
days that seemed to go by
so fast. An amazing trip.
I want to do it again!

Dear Editor:
Every year in the United
States, over 12 million
people, mostly women, are
domestic violence victims.
In 2014, police officers
throughout the state investigated 91,147 incidents of
domestic violence according to report by Michigan
State Police. Of those,
Clare County law enforcement received 348 reports,
while an unknown number
of incidents went unreported. The National Coalition
Against Domestic Violence
(NCADV) determined
domestic violence programs in our state helped
2,492 victims/survivors in a
single day in 2014.
The NCADV defines
domestic violence as “the
[abuser’s] willful intimidation, physical assault,
battery, sexual assault, and/
or other abusive behavior
as part of a systematic pattern of power and control
perpetrated by one intimate
partner against another. It
includes physical violence,
sexual violence, psychological violence, and emotional
abuse.” Domestic violence
is not a single occurrence,
but the abuser’s choice to
use of a range of behaviors
repeated over time.
Abusers use a wide array
of tools to exert their power
and control. Some tools are
so common, we now recognize them as the “Power
and Control Wheel,” which
can be found here: http://
www.theduluthmodel.org/
pdf/PowerandControl.pdf.
The abusers’ tools are the
spokes of the wheel and include: coercion and threats;
intimidation; emotional
abuse; isolation; children;
male privilege; minimizing/denying/blaming; and,
economic abuse.
Eventually, the abuse
turns physical. In Michigan
criminal law, domestic
violence is an assault or
battery committed against
the abuser’s spouse or exspouse, someone the abuser
has or had a dating relationship with, a person the
abuser has a child in common with, or, someone the
abuser lived with. Domestic
violence is found in other
crimes too, particularly,
Assault by Strangulation.
Once the abuser becomes
physical, the violence will
escalate. Research shows
an abuser is about eight
times more likely to kill
their victim after a single
non-fatal strangulation.
Strangulation is intentionally blocking the normal
flow of blood by applying pressure on the throat
or neck, while choking is
difficulty breathing – strangulation is not choking. A
mere 4.4 pounds of pressure
applied to the jugular veins
on each side of the neck
for eight to twelve seconds
will cause unconsciousness.
For comparison, only six
pounds of pressure pulls a
gun’s trigger; 20 pounds of
pressure opens a can of pop;
and, an average handshake
is 80-100 pounds of pressure. With so little pressure
necessary, strangulation
may not even cause bruising.
To understand why
victims do not just leave
these awful situations, we
have to appreciate how
these relationships begin. At
first, abusers are charming
and sweet – “too good to
be true.” The relationships
evolve rapidly; moving in
together, having kids, or
getting married too quickly.
Abusers then demand their
victims’ every waking moment, to always know where
their victim is, and exhibit
extreme jealousy. Victims
are told to quit school/work.
These are only some red
flags of an abusive relationship that build up over time.
Victims love their abusers, and wish for good times
as in the beginning. They
normally lack support systems and money, get threatened about child custody,
and are afraid. Keep in mind
the victim has experienced
the abuser’s power and control repeatedly over time; it
is safest to do as told. Over
50% of victims do escape,
but go back to receive lesser
punishment. On average,
successful separation occurs
on the seventh try, and there
is no guarantee for safety.
Research shows victims
are 70% more likely to be
killed in the two weeks after
leaving their abusers than
any other time during the
relationship.
Domestic violence is
never the victims’ fault.
To help a victim become a
survivor, be supportive. If
you or someone you know
is being abused, our local
resources can assist. Women’s Aid Services in Clare
County can be reached at
(989) 539-5895, or through
crisis lines: (989) 772-9168,
(989) 463-6014, or (989)
539-1046. Joshua’s House
in Clare helps women care
for themselves and their
newborns, and can be contacted at (989) 424-5434.
Lastly, Shelterhouse offers
safety, shelter, advocacy
and counseling to domestic
violence survivors, in Gladwin – (989) 426-9413, and
Midland – (989) 835-6771.
Additional service
providers can be found in
Saginaw (Underground
Railroad, Inc. – (989) 3390007) and Lansing (EVE

(517) 372-5572), to help in
any way needed.

CTE millage important for
vocational education
Dear Editor:
On May 3rd, ClareGladwin RESD will have a
Career Technical Education (CTE) millage on the
ballot. A YES vote will assure its ability to continue
offering our local high
school CTE students from
Clare, Farwell, Harrison,
Beaverton and Gladwin
an opportunity to learn a
skill or trade, earn a living
or pay for more education,
right out of high school. Our students have a desire to go into occupations
that are offered through
our CTE Programs, including Construction Trades,
Automotive Technology
and Culinary Arts; they
would also like to take advantage of new programs
like Welding, Agri-Science
and Business Management. Last year, CTE students
from Clare and Gladwin
Counties achieved the
sixth- highest graduation
rate (98.6%) among Michigan’s 54 CTE Districts
programs. CTE students
learn real world skills and
experiences that make
them valuable employees
in the workforce. Our CTE
graduates continue to fill
the need for skilled workers, which are lacking in
our local area.
Vote YES, to allow our
students the opportunity
to learn and earn a skill
or trade while still in high
school! We all win!
Thank you,
Lynn Grim

Coleman library gets
$10K shelving grant
The Coleman Area Library
is pleased to announce it is
the recipient of a $10,500
grant for book shelving from
the Margaret T. Guilford Memorial Endowment Fund of
the Midland Area Community
Foundation. The Midland
Area Community Foundation provides philanthropic
leadership to strengthen our
community by fostering collaboration and giving, today
and in the future. This grant,
combined with generous
donations from many in the
Coleman community, will
make it possible for the library to add new, solid-wood
shelf units and new metal
shelves in several key areas.
The Coleman Area Library
serves the City of Coleman
and several surrounding
townships within Midland
County. In 2002, the library
moved from its former location in an historic, converted
bank building to a newly
constructed library building.
Since then, library usage
has increased and the book
collection has more than
doubled, filling all available
shelving. According to Gale
Nelson, Director of the Coleman Area Library, “we’ve
seen considerable growth in
interest for books targeted
at young adults, plus large
print books and other special
collections such as mystery
and science fiction. This
grant will finally allow us to
add much-needed shelving to
accommodate expansion in
those areas of interest for our
readers.”
The Coleman Area Library
plans to complete the project
and have the new shelving
in place by the end of the
summer.

15 Spring home maintenance “must do’s”
To do a thorough job of
spring home maintenance
and cleaning, follow these
easy and smart routines.
Roof
With binoculars and a
keen eye, you can generally spot roof problems.
Cracked or missing shingles should be replaced,
and if you see any shingleshift, it may mean you
need to install new fasteners. Look also for buildup
of pine needles and other
debris in those valleys
between roof peaks.
Exterior Walls
Whether you have wood
siding, stucco or brick,
look for damaged areas,
especially under eaves and
near gutter downspouts.
Water stains normally indicate that your gutters are
not adequately containing
roof runoff. With wood,
check for any damaged
areas or openings that clear
the way for carpenter ants,
woodpeckers and other
critters.
Chimney
If you have a masonry
chimney, check the joints
between bricks or stones.
Have any fallen out, or is
vegetation growing? Both
can be evidence of water
infiltration. Efflorescence,
a white calcium-like
deposit, is another sign of
trouble.
Foundation
When inspecting
poured-concrete foundations, keep your eyes
peeled for cracks. If cracks
in the foundation exist,
routine caulking won’t do
the job. You’ll want to hire
a foundation specialist,
who can employ a two-part
epoxy injection system
that will bond those cracks
chemically.
Windows
Leakage around windows will admit warm
summer air and let cooled
indoor air escape, so be
sure to check that any
caulking and weather
stripping you have in place
has remained intact. If you
experienced condensation inside the glass on
double- or triple-glazed
windows during the winter
months, that could mean
the weather seal has been
compromised, in which
case either the glass or the
window will need to be
replaced.
Attend to Leaks
ment suggests higher-thannormal relative humidity,
inadequate ventilation
and the need for a dehumidifier. Check the base
of poured-concrete walls
for cracks and evidence
of water penetration. And
use a flashlight to examine
exposed framing. If you
see what looks like tunneling on the wood, call a pest
control company.
Windows
Spring is a good time
to check for leaky faucets,
clogged drains and sweaty
pipes. Check under kitchen
and bathroom sinks to
make sure connections on
pipes and hoses are secure
and sealed. Look for water
stains around the dishwasher and check washer
machine hoses for cracks,
bulges or dampness.
Air Conditioning
Spring-clean your
windows—inside and
out—with a store-bought
or homemade window
cleaner (one cup rubbing
alcohol, one cup water
and a tablespoon of white
wine vinegar will work
just fine). Apply cleaner
with either a squeegee or a
soft cloth. If screens were
on all winter, remove and
clean them with mild detergent. Lay them on a dry
surface (e.g., a driveway)
to air-dry before putting
them back on.
General Cleaning
Just as you readied your
furnace for fall, now is the
time to make sure that air
conditioning units are in
good working order for
the warmer months ahead.
Change the filter, check
hose connections for leaks,
and make sure the drain
pans are draining freely.
Attic
Search for signs that
insects and critters have
colonized. Also, search
aggressively for mold,
which often takes the form
of gray or black blotches. Proper insulation and
good ventilation will deter
mold growth in the attic, so
take action now to prevent
the problem from developing in the warmer months
ahead.
Basement
Dampness in a base-
Do it Best Quality Paint
metal furniture, check for
signs of rust or paint erosion; a simple remedy with
spray enamel will prevent
further damage from sun,
rain and humidity in the
months ahead.
Grills
If your gas grill has remained idle over the winter
months, check burner jets
for clogs and obstructions,
and be sure that gas hoses
and connections are sound
and secure. For charcoal
grill owners, make certain
your grill is clean of ash
and free of grease residue.
It’s a good habit to adopt
throughout the grilling season, not just in the spring.
Clare Painting
and
Decorating
Spring is a good time
to clean areas of the house
that often go neglected.
Dust or vacuum chair rails,
window casings, tops of
wall-mounted cabinets
and ceiling fans. Launder or dry clean fabric
draperies and use a damp
cloth to clean wood and
vinyl blinds. Vacuum
upholstered furniture and
mattresses, and consider
renting a carpet cleaner to
shampoo carpeting.
Do you have a room in your
home that needs a makeover?
Beat the blues with a fresh
coat of paint!
Decks and Patios
Look for warped, loose
or splintered boards, and
do a good sweep to remove
any leaves and debris that
might have accumulated
between boards. If the
finish on your wood deck
is faded or worn, now is
the time to clean, stain,
and reseal it. If you have
composite decking, follow
manufacturer’s recommendations on seasonal care. Lawn Care

A stunning lawn is the
trademark of most proud
homeowners. After all, the
front yard is the first thing
visitors and passersby see.
But achieving and maintaining the perfect landscape can be time consuming without the right tools.
Want more of your
weekends back? Experts
say achieving professionallevel results in less time
starts with the equipment
you use to do the job. Take
stock of the tools in your
garage or shed. Are they
up to the task? If you’re
spending too much time on
the yard, it may be time to
make some key upgrades.
The right lawnmower,
for example, “is not just an
investment in the beauty
of your property, it’s an investment in your quality of
life,” says Judy Altmaier,
general manager of Exmark, a leading manufacturer of mowers and other
lawn equipment. “A faster
mower means more free
FOR ALL YOUR HOME
IMPROVEMENT NEEDS
time, plain and simple.”
With that principle
in mind, here are a few
insights about what to
look for when replacing an
older mower with a new,
more efficient model.
• Maneuverability:
Between trees, flower beds
and other landscape features, a mower should be
easy to maneuver, so you
can mow closer and spend
less time with the trimmer.
• Quality of cut: Not
all mowers offer the same
quality of cut. When
choosing a new mower,
take this factor into consideration, as well as the
type of lawn and grass you
have.
• Durability: A durable mower will include
features such as welded,
fabricated cutting decks,
commercial engines and
heavy-duty welded, tubular
steel unibody frames.
For quick guidance,
consider taking a cue from
those who make a living
by being more efficient
in the yard – landscape
professionals.
“These days, it’s safe to
say that zero-turn riding
mowers have become the
tool of choice among landscape professionals,” says
Altmaier.

How to protect your home from a wildfire
Homes threatened by
wildfire are primarily those
located in the “wildlandurban interface”. This is
the zone where homes and
subdivisions have been
located in wildland areas
where natural wildfires
can have an impact. While
wildfires in themselves are
not bad, they burn whatever fuel is in their path,
whether it is vegetation
or buildings. Wildfire can
destroy or damage a home
in many ways although any
home can be protected by
applying simple practices.
The Firewise Communities/USA Program was
developed to help homeowners understand wildfire
behavior and how to
protect their home should a
wildfire occur.
One of the most common causes of a home being damaged or destroyed
is due to radiant heat. In a
wildfire, radiant heat is the
heat given off by burning
vegetation. The high temperatures of some wildfires can cause the deck,
siding or roof of a home
to ignite, just because the
fire was too near the home.
Especially in areas of solid
conifers (pines, spruces, junipers, and other conifers),
radiant heat can be very
hot. Studies have shown
that when solid stands of
conifers exist, a minimum
of 30 feet of “defensible
space” should be provided
between the vegetation
and the home. Studies in
western wildfires have
shown that approximately
85 percent of those homes
surviving a major wildfire
had 30-50 feet of defensible space around the home,
coupled with fire-resistant
roofing.
Another important
cause of homes and buildings catching fire during
a wildfire is fire brands.
Fire brands are the burning embers that rise out
of a vegetative fire. This
is similar to those one
might see rising out of a
campfire. However, in a
wildfire, these fire brands
can act like a blizzard with
glowing embers swept
along on wind currents and
landing on or under decks,
on roofs, in wood piles
and other locations where
a new fire could start. Fire
brands can also be carried
up to a mile downwind
from the actual fire, starting spot fires ahead of the
original fire.
Studies have shown that
by using fire-resistant roofing such as metal, asphalt,
or composite shingles can
prevent or reduce a roof
from catching fire. Keeping leaves and litter from
gathering under decks,
behind landscape plants, or
out of eave trough gutters can greatly reduce the
chance of a house or building catching fire.
While even a steelreinforced bunker isn’t fire
proof, building and fire

Loss of control, swaying when making routine
turns, bottoming out on
city streets or bouncing
excessively on rough
roads are indicators that
the steering and suspension may have been
damaged. The steering
and suspension are key
safety-related systems.
Together, they largely
determine your car’s ride

Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and
uneven tire wear, are
symptoms of an alignment problem. Proper
wheel alignment is important for the lifespan of
tires and helps ensure safe

Low tire pressure,

Four injured in vehicle - buggy accident
By Pat Maurer
Four people were
injured Thursday when the
Amish buggy they were
in was hit by a 2007 Trail
Blazer.
A release from the
Isabella County Sheriff’s
Department said the accident happened yesterday,
March 31, at 10:17 a.m.
in front of 6289 South
Rolland Road in Rolland
Township.
The Blazer was driven
by Johathan Riehle, 61, of
Blanchard.
When deputies arrived
at the scene, the release
said, they found four
injured, two adults and two
children.
The children, a threeyear-old boy with possible
head injuries and a fiveyear-old girl with unknown
injuries, were taken to
McLaren Emergency in
Mt. Pleasant.
Isabella Sheriff Michael
Main reported that the
two youngsters were later
transferred by ambulance
to Grand Rapids.
The horse pulling the
Amish buggy also sustained injuries to a leg and
its head.
It was captured after the
accident and taken back to
the Amish farm.
Riehle told officers he
was south bound on Rolland Road when he hit the
Amish buggy.
Isabella County deputies
were assisted at the scene
by the Millbrook Rolland
Township Fire Department, Fremont Township
Fire and First Response,
Mobile Medical Response
Ambulance Service and by
Central Dispatch.
Sheriff Main said that
the accident is still under
investigation.
