Smith credits ‘total team effort’ for AAA Stars’ success

The Battlefords AAA Stars
have been one of the best
teams in the SMAAAHL during the 2013-14 season.
Last season, the Stars finished the regular season in
seventh place with 45 points
in 44 games.
This season has been a
turnaround.
Battlefords surpassed last
year’s win total of 19 with a
win Jan. 11 and find themselves battling with the Notre
Dame Argos and the Prince
Albert Mintos for the top
spot in the league over the
last couple of months.
Battlefords head coach
Martin Smith understands
the work his team has done in
the defensive zone has helped
the Stars climb the standings.
He credits the team for their
attention to detail and commitment on defence, limiting
scoring chances and shots on
net for the opposing team.
“We’ve taken care of our
own end first and things have
worked at the other end for
us,” Smith said.
He believes it has been a
“total team effort” to keep
the Stars near the top of the
SMAAAHL.

“We have a lot more offence than last year,” said
Smith. “Plus, both goaltenders are a year older. We have
three defencemen that played
in the league last year that
are more defensive-minded.
It’s been a combination of
everything. The players have
bought into the system.”
Recently, the Stars have
been on an eight-game win-
ning streak, dating back to
before the holiday break.
Coincidently, forward Josh
LaFramboise has a point
streak of the same length.
Over those eight games, he
has 11 goals and nine assists.
Smith points to the Mac’s
Midget AAA Tournament
as the starting point for
LaFramboise’s recent hot
streak. LaFramboise had
three goals and six assists
in four games at the
tournament. Smith believes
the line combination with
LaFramboise, Josh Bly and
Spencer Bast has a little bit
of everything.
“LaFramboise is a gifted
scorer,” said Smith. “You’ve
got a playmaker and a passer
in Josh Bly and then you have
the grittiness and willingness
to go to the tough areas for
Spencer Bast.”
The trio is all in the top
five in the league in scoring
as of Jan. 24. Bast is tied for
first with 51 points, Bly and
LaFramboise are tied for
fourth with 47 points each.
One of the reasons for the
strong record in the first half
of the season was the play
of goaltender Ryan Rewerts.
With fellow netminder Rylan
Toth missing nine weeks due
to an injury, Rewerts played
in what Smith estimated to be
16 straight games.
“We knew from the start of
the year that we were going
to have two of the top goaltenders in the league and we
were going to have a good
tandem,” Smith said. “They
both push each other and we
feel confident no matter who
we have in the net.”
As of Jan. 24, Rewerts is
tied for first in the league with
15 wins this season. Toth and
Rewerts are both in the top
10 in goals-against average
and save percentage. The
return of Toth has given Rewerts more time to rest, even
though Smith says he enjoyed
all of the playing time.
There are other injury concerns for the Stars. Forward
Keifer Hintz has been out
since Nov. 21 with an injury.
Hintz was hit in the head by
Prince Albert Mintos player
Teal Sobkowicz, giving Hintz
a concussion. Hintz suffered
a broken wrist when he fell
on it after the hit.
The goal is to have him
back, if healthy, in time for
the playoffs. The return will
help add depth up front for a
long playoff run.
Battlefords are trying to
improve on last year’s results.
In the 2013 playoffs, the Saskatoon Contacts swept the
Stars out of the first round.
Smith knows the experience
from the Mac’s tournament
and last year’s postseason
has been invaluable to the
development of the team. It
will prepare them to change
the feeling of last season’s
defeat.
“We weren’t happy with
what happened in the playoffs last year,” said Smith.
“We want to make a good
run.”
He knows every team
wants to make a strong run
in the playoffs, but he seems
confident they have a strong
team dedicated to what the
Stars are trying to accomplish.
“We want to win the league
and that’s what we’re shooting for.”
Referees face ire from fans on ice, get support off ice

“When we’re short refs
and the older guys have to
do two or three games in
a day and go and evaluate
on a Saturday, you’re at the
rink for 12 hours,” said Cey.
That’s not ideal either.”
The shortage of referees
has led to some awkward
situations.
He explained there are
times when midget-aged
referees are forced to officiate
midget level hockey because
they are the only ones available to do the game.
“When you’re short refs,
it’s either like, ‘Hey, we
gotta cancel the game or you
guys have to understand that
this guy is the same age as
the players and he’s going
to have to do the game,’”
said Cey.
According to Cey, the Battlefords lose five to 10 referees every year, partly due to
abuse they face at the rink.
On ice, the referees are
able to deal with situations
of verbal abuse themselves.
As Cey points out, the referee
is able to hand out bench
minors for unsportsmanlike
conduct, 10-minute misconducts, game misconducts and
match or gross misconducts
for players and coaches who
are unruly towards officials.
“Usually with those, it’s
out of the official’s hands, but
usually a suspension comes it
something like that happens
during the game,” said Cey.
As for fans, a referee is
able to ask them to leave the
arena if they are verbally
abusive.
The referee can halt play
until the person is out of the
rink in order to restore order
to the crowd.
Dimmick said the BMHA
has put in bylaws and policies to cut down on the abuse
that officials can take in the
course of the game. Fans,
players and coaches face
suspensions from games if
they are extremely hard on
the officials.
The associations hear what
the officials say as well. After
an incident occurs, the referees fill out a game report and
sent it to the league and the
referee-in-chief. If the teams
can confirm the referee’s report, the association usually
sides with the referee. Cey
said it helps keep referees
around knowing someone has
their back.
“They definitely are willing to protect the refs as much
as possible because there are
so many people at a young
age who do it for a year or
two and say it isn’t worth it
because of the hassle they get
from the coaches, players and
parents.”
While the abuse can happen, an open dialogue between the referees and the
coaches can help defuse
any situation. Handling a
situation professionally and
politely will go a long way
in making coaches respect the
situation. Even if the coaches
don’t agree with the call, as
long as a referee can point
to a rule they called, the two
parties can at least “agree to
disagree,” as Cey explained.
It is a tough job, but it
can open paths to higher
levels in the hockey world.
Norum said they can fasttrack talented officials to
higher levels of play. He used
a 16-year-old linesman in the
SJHL as an example.
Closer to the Battlefords,
two referees from the area
are heading to the Olympics.
Mark and Doug Wheeler will
be a linesman and an off ice
official respectively at the
2014 winter games in Sochi.
Cey said that it can be a very
rewarding profession if you
treat it like a job.
“If you’re not the best
hockey player, reffing is a
great way to stay in it and
move up to a higher level of
hockey.”

Closing of the Agriplex rink complicates BMHA season

The Battlefords Minor
Hockey Association faced
a major hurdle heading into
the 2013-14 season. Last
August, city council passed
a unanimous resolution to
close the Agriplex ice surface
temporarily.
With the Agriplex not in
service, the rinks in the area
are the Civic Centre, the Battleford Arena and the Don
Ross Centre.
“It hasn’t been easy,” said
Dean Dimmick, president of
the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association, of losing the
arena at the Agriplex. “To be
honest, it’s a real challenge to
get enough ice time for all of
our teams and kids.”
The Agriplex had 35-40
hours per week of available
ice time for the BMHA. With
35 teams competing under
the association, it equates to
one less practice per team
per week. For proper development, Hockey Canada
expects a team to have three
practices for every game.
Most teams only get one hour
of practice a week. If a team
wants more ice time for practice, the team itself has to pay
for it. The fees for the season
factored in the cost of rental
for one practice a week.
Dimmick admits they are
unable to meet this ratio
because of the lack of ice
time. The issue has forced
teams from the BMHA to
find ice time at rinks in other
communities. While the communities have been willing to
accommodate the teams, it is
not what the BMHA wants.
“Our members sign up
to play Battlefords minor
hockey and expect, I guess,
to be playing in one of the
arenas here in town. Or at
least practicing.”
The BMHA has not been
able to continue on with
development programs they
brought in last year, including
power skating and goaltending sessions.
The lack of ice time also
hinders the development of
the AA programs. Dimmick
estimates these teams need a
minimum of two practices a
week to be competitive with
their peers.
“We’ve tried to accommodate to get two, but sometimes that second one is in
Cut Knife or Wilkie or Saulteaux or Maymont, whoever
has available ice.”
With the limited ice time,
the minor hockey league
also has to compete with two
senior league teams, the Battlefords Beaver Blues and the
Meota Combines. The teams

the Battleford Arena and the
Civic Centre respectively.
The good news out of
this situation is the amount
of kids playing hockey to
create this lack of ice time.
There are currently about 465
kids registered to participate.
Recently, there have been
small increases in the amount
of kids playing hockey. Dimmick thinks it has to do with
the Battlefords becoming a
younger community.
“ Ye a r s a g o , a l l o u r
young’uns seemed to move
away from the Battlefords
for other opportunities,” said
Dimmick. “Now with our
local economy, I think our
young families are staying here and some moving
back.”
With the amount of kids
in the system, Dimmick
estimates there are over
100 coaches as part of the
BMHA. He expects with time
commitments to get certification, practices and planning
practices and games that each
coach volunteers three to
five hours a week before the
actual game is played.
The coaches have received
help from the Stars head
coach Martin Smith and
North Stars head coach Kevin
Hasselberg. Both coaches
have committed time in the
form of symposiums for local
coaches.
The AAA Stars and the
AAA Sharks are the “flagship teams” of the BMHA
according to Dimmick. All of
the programs work as feeder
teams for these older clubs.
Along with the coaches,
the community has also embraced the teams. Each of
the age groups runs a tournament. Dimmick says the team
sponsorships have helped the
program know the value of
the tournaments.
“The [sponsors] that really
come on board realize what
the economic dollars these
tournaments in minor hockey
bring to the community as
well,” said Dimmick.
“It’s a win-win situation
for all the parties involved.”
With all of the support
from parents, the coaches and
the rest of the community, it
is really easy to see hockey
grow in the Battlefords despite the lack of available
ice time. Dimmick believes
in keeping kids active and
hockey is a great way of
doing it.
“We do want to see hockey
grow in the Battlefords. If
kids are active and busy, they
are staying out of trouble.”
Development of refs necessary to keep hockey active

When a whistle blows at a
hockey game, there is usually
someone yelling. Whether it
is a coach, a fan or a player,
somebody doesn’t agree with
the call. And who is the focus
of the anger? The referees.
While it isn’t the norm that
referees face verbal abuse
from players, coaches and
fans, it does happen at arenas
across the country. It certainly isn’t justified when it happens. Referees are constantly
learning their craft.
To prepare, the referees go
through classroom sessions
and computer modules during their day of training each
year. Those training sessions
also include on ice lessons for
the officials.
One of the biggest misconceptions is that once a
referee or a linesman puts
on his or her uniform, they
are an expert of the game.
Most referees are still learning and, like anyone who is
learning a new job, can make
mistakes.
“Like a player, they’re
learning the rules; they’re
learning the game; they’re
learning the pace and how
to control and manage a
game,” said Battlefords
Minor Hockey Association
president Dean Dimmick.
“We need to allow them time
to develop.”
The pace of the game is an
issue that can give referees
adjustment problems. Hockey is a fast game that goes end
to end, but their eyes can’t be
everywhere at once.
“It’s tough to see everything,” said Dimmick. “It
comes down to interpreta-
tion. To see someone fall and
someone was in the close
proximity, you have to make
a quick decision. Sometimes
it’s right. Sometimes it’s
wrong. I think over the balance of a game or a season,
those calls seem to balance
out.”
To help educate the referees, SHA referee-in-chief
Trevor Norum said there is a
program in place where experienced officials go to games
to mentor the younger ones.
Due to a lack of officials,
it does not happen as much
as it should. He compared
the learning curve to how
a young hockey player is
coached.
“Young hockey players
practice and get feedback
from their coach,” said Norum, who has been on the
officials’ board since 1988.
“After every shift, they’re
continuously getting feedback from their coach. In
between periods, [players
are] getting feedback from
their coach. Whereas a young
official, we want to improve
their skills. That’s our big
challenge, getting those mentors [to games] to coach and
to help them along and to
support them.”

knows this is a local problem
as well. While there are about
50 registered officials in the
area, half of them are just
starting out. There are only
25 that he directly oversees.
While he thinks that the
program is a great idea, he
admits it’s not easy for older
officials, especially ones with
families, to find time to go
out and supervise the young
officials.

Female hockey is
BMHA’s ‘biggest
area of growth’

The numbers of hockey
players in the girls’ divisions
has dwindled over the last
four or five years in the Battlefords.
Dean Dimmick, president of the Battlefords Minor Hockey Association,
estimates there are about 50
girls registered this season,
excluding the midget AAA
Sharks.
“From a standpoint of
a strength of an organization, the female category
of hockey, I think, is where
our biggest growth potential
lies,” said Dimmick.
There used to be a separate association for female
hockey: the Battlefords Female Hockey Association.
Because of a recent rule
change allowing one minor
hockey association per centre, the BFHA was absorbed
the BMHA.
“Now that they’re a part of
us, we need to do a better job
promoting the game to girls
and getting them interested in
and starting developing that
program again in every age
group,” said Dimmick.
Some of the things the
BMHA has looked at include
a “bring a friend” type program. According to Female
Sharks representative Kelvin
Colliar, the program is designed for girls to bring their
friends to the rink to see what
it feels like on the ice and the
bench.
Both Dimmick and Colliar
also want to be more active in
the schools around registration time next year in order
to get the word about girls’
hockey.
Dimmick believes the program is in almost “catch-22”
situation. There needs to be
a strong program in place to
attract kids. Then, it becomes
like a culture.
“As soon as people are enjoying it, people are naturally
going to gravitate to that. It is
just a matter of building in it
year by year.”
Colliar said the division
used to support full atom,
pee wee, bantam and midget
teams. Last year’s decision
by the SHA and Hockey Canada to take out body contact
in the pee wee division has
hurt numbers. Many pee weeaged girls have elected to stay
in the boys’ division.
The Sharks have a pee wee
team, a midget B team and
the midget AAA team. Colliar says when the numbers
are good, there are about 20
players who are on the pee
wee roster, but it’s a tight
juggle.
“These girls’ first allegiance would be to their boys’
team and then they would
come on and play with our
girls when they can,” said
Colliar. “They’ve been really
good about doing that for the
most part this year.”
As for the midget B team,
Colliar said there were 13
regulars on the team. With
players being out recently,
the team normally dresses 10
or 11 skaters and a goalie.
“They’re a good group of
kids that are pretty dedicated
to making sure they’re at
the rink. They understand
that if they’re not there, it’s
a struggle for the girls that
remain.”
The recent small numbers
have made it hard for the
travelling teams to know how
many players are going to be
able to play any given night.
“We want to build the
program. It would be nice to
have numbers as such that we
weren’t worried about every
time we went on the road [if
we are] going to have enough
players,” said Colliar.
In order to grow this area,
more girls need to sign up.
Colliar knows there are benefits outside of the rink to
playing hockey and encourages parents to consider signing up their kids.
“It’s a great way to build
self esteem. It’s a great way
to stay active.”

On behalf of Council and the residents of the Town of Battleford,
it is with great pleasure that I have this opportunity to extend a
warm welcome and congratulate everyone involved with Minor
Hockey in the Battlefords.
Whether you are a player, a parent, a fan, a coach or a volunteer,
it takes a great deal of effort and enthusiasm and I commend you
for all your support!
We can be proud of our teams as they travel to other communities
to represent us, as they are truly young ambassadors of our
community.
I wish one and all a great hockey experience and remember to
always have FUN.

Thankful for hockey to lessen the cold of winter! Once again the local rinks
have been full with young players learning, developing and applying their skills.
Hockey is a way of life for many. It·s a place to meet new people, make new
friends, and have fun!
Battlefords Minor Hockey would like to thank The News Optimist for
publishing the Minor Hockey Week Special Edition, which provides us with an
opportunity to showcase our programs, our players and the people who give
our youth in the Battlefords and surrounding area this opportunity.
Like the game itself, hockey in the Battlefords doesn·t happen without
teamwork. I would like to thank all of the board of directors and staff for
their hard work and dedication to the game we love. Each year we are faced
with many issues and challenges and like a jarring body check we are able to
get back on our feet and skate the length of the ice and do what is best for
our team.
We started our season by incorporating a female program as the female
association disbanded prior to the season. I look forward to growing this
segment in our program and to the day when we have hundreds of girls back
playing hockey. In 2013-14, BMHA unfortunately had to increase registration
fees. Anytime fees need to be increased it is a hard decision however with
rising ice and referees cost it was something that we needed to do for
the long term viability of our association. We still offer one of the lowest
registrations fees of any of the centres of our size.
One of our biggest challenges this year was the closure of the Agri-Plex arena.
We increased from 31 to 35 teams this year and have one less rink to utilize.
This loss amounted to 35 less hours a week for our players. Unfortunately due
to ice shortages, some teams have had to go out of town for extra practice
times. I realize recreational facilities are not proÀtable and it is a Àne balance
to keep facilities open however I believe the bigger picture that needs to be
considered are the activities that will help keep our youth off the streets and
in safe environments.
In closing, I would like to thank all of our coaches who lead, parents who
provide support, and ofÀcials who allow games to be played. I would also like
to send a special thank you to Kevin Hasselberg and his Battleford·s North
Stars for their growing support of Battleford Minor Hockey.
The Battlefords offer great hockey and the rinks are always busy. Drop in
and enjoy a game.
