W H AT ’ S I N A N A M E ?
Philthy McNasty’s…where did the name come from?
The answer to that one is kind of funny. Back in 1993, when we were first working on
the concept for a “sports bar with great food”, we came up with a list of names we thought were
cool. Some of those original names were… The Dugout, The Dog Pound, Bases Loaded, Fanatics,
Champions, plus a few more. A local marketing company was hired to ask 200 students and 200
random people what they thought of the different names. The day the survey was going to be
conducted the company told us that “The Dugout” was already taken. They said “any other names
you want to throw in there”? We had heard of a bar in Scotland called “FILTHY MCNASTY’S”,
so as a joke, we threw it in there. The survey was conducted at Sheridan College and the Oakville
Mall, where they polled over 500 people on which name they liked best. The college results came
back and they all loved FILTHY MCNASTY’S. We thought “oh no, we can’t call it that”. Then
the results from the mall came in…and it was the number one name picked. It was even the number
one name picked by women. We were shocked. What was supposed to be a joke, became our name.
With a name like Philthy McNasty’s…you better have clean bathrooms!
We opened the doors to the first Philthy McNasty’s in 1994 in Oakville, Ontario. The
reaction to the name was mixed to say the least. Not only that, but we opened a sports bar in the
middle of a baseball and hockey strike. People thought they were going to come in and get a bad
attitude from the staff. Some people thought it was going to be a dive. We had people call and tell
us over the phone they didn’t like the name and the sign should be taken down. A lot of people
refused to come in because they thought it would be inappropriate for children. We had a real
tough time getting women to set foot in the place. The name Philthy McNasty’s was meant to be
tongue in cheek. We used the tongue in cheek program in everything we did - from the uniforms,
to the menu, to our décor. Basically we said we didn’t care what the customer thought...but really
we did. We decided we weren’t going to take the name seriously...but we were going to take food,
cleanliness and guest service seriously. We were neither Filthy or Nasty. But since no one had
ever heard of us before, they didn’t know what we were about.
People did get used to our name. It actually brought in people who were just plain curious as
to what we were all about and that gave us the opportunity to impress them. They liked our fun
attitude and eclectic atmosphere. So in the end it was the right choice. The peoples choice. The
name is known all over Canada. It’s just one of those names that raises an eyebrow. We have heard
many people call us different names. Like Pharty Mcrabbys, Nasty Phils, Filthy Nasty’s, Phil
Mcrottens and the list goes on. We have tried to add second lines like ‘sports emporium”, “sports
grill”, “sports tap”, but to no avail.
The people are the ones that decided what to call us, we have tried to modify it but in the
end it never works. It’s just like it’s against the rules to give yourself a nickname. The people have
given us one. It’s the one we hear the most and that is simply “PHILTHYS”.
