The History of Fort Collins
Fort Collins is all this man’s fault!
Well, ok, maybe it’s
slightly unfair to put it that way – I should have said, give the
credit for Fort Collins to this gentleman!
Meet Lt. Colonel
William Oliver Collins, the city’s namesake and popular
commander of the Calvary troops first assigned to the area.
Way back in the 1830’s, the fur trade was in full swing along
the South Platte River, and in fact, throughout the Rocky
Mountains.
Several competing fur companies – the
American Fur Company, founded by John Jacob Astor, the
Hudson Bay Company, originally chartered in 1670, and the Northwest Company, as
well as many other smaller groups, all jockeyed for position and pride of place, trying to
crush their competition and gain the upper hand in the marketplace.
The American and European public had an almost insatiable desire for the pelts of
beaver and other natural furs – beaver was used in the making of hats of the era, and
other fur went into clothing of all types. The American landscape, from the Midwest to
the Rockies, had a rich natural abundance of beaver – the only problem was getting
someone to trek into the mountains, endure cold and snow and primitive conditions for
months on end to trap and skin the pelts, then bring them back to civilization and the
marketplace. Luckily for all involved, there lived a hardy breed of man who became
known as the Mountain Men who were not only willing to perform such tasks, but
reveled in it.
Throughout what would become the Fort Collins area, from about 1830 to 1850, the fur
trade was at its peak of operation, with mountain men, fur traders and Native Americans
all tripping over each other (ok, that might be a slight exaggeration, but you get my
meaning!) in a effort to harvest the most beaver pelts from the area, and thus make the

most money. By the beginning of the 1850’s, buffalo robes had replaced beaver as the
hide of choice, and the beaver trade began to suffer a sharp decline in popularity.
But the discovery of gold in California in 1849 brought an influx of settlers and fortune
seekers across the plains, also bringing explorers, surveyors and other adventurers, as
well as the military muscle needed to protect them. The Oregon Trail became popular
with settlers moving toward California and Oregon, and in fact skirted along the eastern
edge of the Rockies, passing through what is modern-day Laporte, before moving out
across the Laramie Plains.
Fort Laramie had been established by the Army at the mouth of the Laramie River, and
garrisoned by soldiers from the 9th Kansas Cavalry and the 11th Ohio Cavalry. On July
22, 1862 the 9th Kansas was sent to what is now the town of Laporte to help protect the
west-bound settlers and to guard the newly-established Overland Stage Line. The new
army camp was set up near the Cache la Poudre River, and was dubbed “Camp
Collins”, in honor of the popular commander of the Ohio Cavalry, Lt. Colonel William
Oliver Collins. The 9th Kansas remained at the camp until replaced by Colorado troops,
who in turn were relieved by Colonel Collins’ men in May of 1864.

The Flood of 1864
Colonel Collins’ Ohio Cavalry barely had time to unpack their gear and unsaddle their
horses before they were faced with a natural disaster that turned their world upside
down. On the night of June 9, 1864, a flash flood roared down the Cache la Poudre
River and flooded the entire camp, sweeping away tents, ammunition, supplies and
even some of the cabins that had been built.
Luckily, the soldiers were all able to
escape with their lives, and retreated to some nearby high ground, but in the morning
they found the canyon flooded and their camp destroyed.
A search was soon on for a new location to build the army post, and at the suggestion
of a local settler – one Joseph Mason, Colonel Collins surveyed a site some five miles
downstream of the old one. Still on the Cache la Poudre River, the new location offered
less of a danger from flooding and being less settled, there were fewer land claims to
argue about with existing residents. On August 20, 1864, Colonel Collins signed the
order setting aside the present location of Fort Collins, making it official. By October of
that year the new fort was ready for the soldiers to move into.
The only building still preserved today from the old fort is the Auntie Elizabeth Stone
cabin, which was originally an officer’s mess hall located on modern-day Jefferson
Street. Today it’s been moved to Library Park. (I’ll talk a little more later about Auntie
Elizabeth Stone – she was quite a character!)
A Short History, But Sweet
Fort Collins was only garrisoned by the Army for a short two years – by September of
1866 the soldiers were evacuated, and the farmers and ranchers that had settled
around the fort were left to fend for themselves.

In 1872 Congress opened the former military reservation to homesteading, and a short
time later the Agricultural Colony arrived to officially plat out the town. Fort Collins was
incorporated as a town on February 3, 1872, and the census from just a couple of years
earlier showed a whole 838 people as the entire population of Larimer County! Man,
this place was getting crowded!
The first business in Fort Collins was the former army sutler’s store, called Old Grout,
named for the grouting material that went into its construction.
Located at the
southwest corner of what is now Linden and Jefferson Streets, it was not only the
general store, but also the site of town meetings, church services, dances and even
served as the county court and jail.
Soon after came a small hotel, the post office, a mill and a brickyard.
An influx of
grasshoppers in 1873 led to an outflow of population, but by 1875 they were back,
bringing with them a newspaper, a bank, three hotels and a church. Now the town itself
had 500 residents, and was a going concern. In 1877 the Colorado Central Railroad
arrived, connecting the town to the Transcontinental Railroad and the rest of the outside
world. Now, livestock and farm produce could be shipped to wider markets and travelers
and consumer goods could be brought in to bolster the local economy. The future of
the town was assured.
In 1871 the first 30 acres was deeded to the town to establish what would later become
Colorado State University, followed by another 80 acres the following year; but it wasn’t
until 1879 that the doors of the college first opened, with a college president and two
faculty members. From those humble beginnings, CSU grew over the ensuing years to
become a world-class educational institution, and the largest employer in Fort Collins.

Modern Day Happenings
Residents of the area realized that if farms and ranches were to survive, a method of
bringing water to the outlying areas would have to be developed, so in the 1870’s and
1880’s construction began on a series of irrigation canals.
The resulting system of
canals allowed for a boom in the agricultural industry, which still forms the entire
region’s economic base. Wheat, oats and barley all grew well in the climate, as did
sugar beets and alfalfa, which were used as feeder crops for both sheep and cattle. In
the early 1900’s, this area was known as the “Lamb Feeding Capital of the World,” with
between 250,000 and 400,000 sheep and lambs being bred each year.
Every year saw more and more evidence that civilization, and civilized habits and
manners had reached Fort Collins. Churches sprang up – St. Joseph’s in 1901, the
First Baptist in 1903. The first library in town was built in 1904 with a $10,000 grant
from the Carnegie Foundation.
And in 1906 the first hospital was built by the Fort
Collins Hospital Association.
Most of the known world was in the midst of the Victorian era, so named because of
Queen Victoria I of England, who reigned from 1837 through 1901. The period was
marked by rapid changes in technology and communication, by advances in medical
developments and vast migrations of population – perhaps in reaction to the changes
taking place at such a tremendous rate, the morals and social strictures of the time were
becoming increasingly conservative and restrictive.
Behavior in society was judged by a very strict set of moral criteria – young ladies must
be chaperoned when visited by young men, for example; in one of the more ridiculous
cases in point the legs of pianos or harpsichords were expected to be decently covered
in fabric so as not to offend anyone observing the musical instrument! Conformity to the
social mores of the day was an absolute must if you were to be successful socially,
politically or economically.

Fort Collins residents were nothing if not Victorian – in the late 1890’s a growing conflict
between the “wets” – those who preferred that Fort Collins remain a drinking town, and
the “drys” – those who wanted to accede to the constraints of Victorian society and stop
the town residents from consuming alcohol in any form. By 1896 the “drys” had the
upper hand, and the voters passed an ordinance that banned the sale of liquor within
the city limits. That ordinance would stand until 1969, when it was finally repealed! And
since, then, of course, Fort Collins has been making up for lost time – they’ve now
become the microbrewery capital of Colorado, with more microbreweries per capita than
any other Colorado city!
From the early part of the century to just after World War II, Fort Collins enjoyed a
steady growth, as people discovered the many benefits offered by the area. Agriculture
and the college continued to be the predominant sources of income, but then in the
1950’s and 1960’s came an influx of new industries and employers, and Fort Collins
went through a period of rapid expansion – more than doubling its population during this
time. Today, companies like Hewlett Packard, Anheuser Busch, Agilent Technologies
and Eastman Kodak give Fort Collins a broad-based economic foundation.
Natural History
Fort Collins is geographically located about sixty miles north of Denver, and about 46
miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Nestled against the foothills of the Rockies, the
city averages more than 300 days of sunshine every year – more than Miami!
At 4,984 feet above sea level, Fort Collins is high enough to be close to some worldclass skiing, enjoys four distinct seasons and yet presents a mild climate that allows
outdoor activity almost all year round.
The city is bisected by the Cache La Poudre River, which has an interesting history all
its own. It seems that way back in 1836, a group of French trappers needed to bury a
The Best of Fort Collins
15
supply of gunpowder over the winter, since they didn’t want to lug it all over the
mountains in the snow, nor did they want it to fall into anyone else’s hands. So they
buried their “cache” or supply next to a river, and dubbed the stream “Cache La Poudre”
River – literally “cache the powder,” or “hide the powder.” The name stuck, and today
the Cache La Poudre (pronounced “Cash La Pooder”) flows through the center of Fort
Collins, and provides an incredible array of outdoor activities, from white-water rafting to
fishing to hiking its banks or riding horses along its historic trails.

Breweries
After the citizenry of Fort Collins got past the old Victorian stick-in-the-mud attitude
about serving alcohol in the city, they really threw themselves into the task of making up
for lost time!
Fort Collins is now the microbrewery capital of Colorado, with more
microbrews per capita than any other city in the state, as well as being the third in the
country in terms of volume of brewpubs and craft breweries! And then, of course,
there’s the big gun: the Anheuser Busch Brewery – one of only five such facilities in the
country.
On the last weekend in June, Fort Collins hosts the annual Colorado Brewer’s Festival,
a celebration of Colorado brewers that draws thousands of festival goers for a weekend
of custom-crafted beer, great food and music.

This restaurant honors the memory of “Auntie” Elizabeth Stone, pioneer and
entrepreneur who arrived in Fort Collins in 1864, along with her husband Lewis. This
was actually Auntie Stone’s second husband – she was born Elizabeth Hickok (no
relation to Wild Bill), and married her first husband at age 22. A hardy pioneer, she
moved with her husband to St. Louis, Missouri, and later to Chester, Illinois – bearing 8
children along the way! Her first husband died in 1852, and Auntie Stone moved on to
Minnesota, where she met and married Lewis Stone in 1857.
They lived first in
Minnesota, and then eventually made their way to Fort Collins.
Fort Collins was still a raw army camp at that point, and Auntie Stone, although already
in her sixties, quickly spotted a business opportunity – she and her husband applied for
a permit to build an officer’s mess and a boarding house. The mess hall would be the
first dwelling erected in the new Fort Collins, and Auntie Stone was the first white
woman to reside in the town. Auntie Stone was typical pioneer stock – hardy, tough and

Horsetooth Reservoir
Horsetooth Reservoir is located in the foothills west of Fort Collins at an elevation of
5,430 feet, A popular spot for fishing, boating, water-skiing, and camping, it got its name
from nearby Horsetooth Rock, which features in local Native American lore. According
to legend, the Valley of Contentment, which lies under the reservoir’s water, was once
guarded by a giant, who made sure that no buffalo, deer or antelope were hunted in the
valley.
Chief Maunamoku led his tribe into battle against the giant, and went mano-a-
mano with him, using a tomahawk from the heavens. First the Chief slashed the giant’s

stone, and is now known as Horsetooth Rock.

Picturesque settings and spectacular views, especially on the back nine. The fairways
and greens are well groomed. In spite of the standard cut of rough, strategically placed
sand bunkers and tree-lined fairways will add to the course's difficulty factor, yet most of
the landing areas are generous.
