Please call me to sign up for a time to play. Jamming is welcome – Phil Please contact Phil Fox (480-427-2394) for performance opportunities for swing era pre-meeting or meeting schedules Face Book https://www.facebook.com/pages/ARIZONAACCORDION-CLUB Page 2 The Arizona Accordion Club MENU for JULY 15, 2013 - All American Chili with Biscuits JUNE 17, 2013 MEETING - “Another Summertime Open Play and Jam Night” Raye Donatella Pre-meeting music was played by Ted Lee on his beautiful red Roland accordion. Ted did a wonderful job of playing some really pretty music - he even sang several songs, too. What a nice beginning to the evening, Ted. Pete Donatella played now on his vintage Bell accordion, accompanied by Jim Winning on drums. They began their set with an old standard “Mack the Knife”, “I Left My Heart In San Francisco,”,“ Mame,”,“Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White", "Summer Samba,” the theme from the play “Pippen,", "What a Wonderful World,” then “Once In A While,” and “On The Street Where You Live.” Jerry Szymanski came up and joined them for a few tunes, beginning with “It’s the Talk of the Town,” “Avalon,” “Sweet Sue, Just You,” and ending their set with “Cave Creek Polka.” As Jerry left the stage, Jay Stevens came up to join Pete and Jim with his new love, his Roland accordion with all the extras. Pete and Jim played “Meditation” while Jay lined up his toys to sing “Julaida Polka,” then they played “Tick Tock Polka,” “Lichensteiner Polka,” “Und du, O Edelweiss” waltz, then “Cuckoo Waltz,” a really old tune that I used to play on the piano when I was taking lessons in 1948!! Does that tell you how old this song is?? (or I am??) Then Jay sang “Put Another Log On the Fire,” then they played a request for “Lady Of Spain,” finishing up with Jay singing “Waltz Across Texas.” All you gentlemen did a wonderful job! Thank you. Paul Betken was up next - he began with “The Nearness of You,” another pretty song I don’t know, then “Tea For Two,” then another nameless one, “Some Day,” then he was joined by Pete Donatella to play “Bye, Bye, Blackbird,” “Girl From Ipanema,” “I'm In the Mood For Love,” “On the Sunny Side of the Street,” and ending with “Five Foot Two.” That was fun, guys. (Paul, you have to start giving me a list of your songs.) Our club president, Phil Fox, played “Once Upon a Time,” “A Very Good Year” and “My Way.” A great job, Phil, - you’re really getting used to this playing for a crowd thing! Jay Stevens played and sang “Tennessee Waltz” to end the night - that was another great musical evening - fun music, fun friends, good food. Now for a quick “as my Dad always said” “I’m all in favor of the 18-year-old vote. There’ll never be another time in life when they know all the answers.” The Arizona Accordion Club Table of Contents Ladies Night President Phil’s Message Our Meeting ! Many of our members treated us to some wonderful music. It is a good example of how our summer meetings should be. I encourage all of you to join us with your instruments and play solos or join in the jamming sessions that are so enjoyable. Again, this is a good opportunity for you to bring your instrument and show off your talent in a more intimate, low pressure setting. All performances are welcome. Please share your music with us this summer. On a serious note, I am very sad to bring you the news that Charlotte Fischer, wife of long time member John Fischer passed away today. I extend our regrets and prayers to John and to his and Charlotte’s family. Our June meeting was our 17th birthday. We played and sang Happy Birthday to the Arizona Accordion Club and will have our birthday cake in the late fall after our winter members arrive so that all can enjoy our club’s longevity. Summertime is a rough time for accordions. Heat and accordions don’t mix well because the reed block contains beeswax to hold in the reeds. Keep playing in your Air Conditioned homes or venues. Accordion repair is not rocket science, some people are nervous about opening up their “box.” With the right tool set we can each make repairs to our accordions ourselves. There are many accordion repair websites for you to surf through that have suggestions, instructions and would like to sell you self help books and tool kits. They work well. If you are among the faint at heart players who are afraid to open your instrument, please feel comfortable that we have Ziggies’ in Phoenix. Ziggies’ is located in central Phoenix and is a full service accordion repair shop. Summer also brings Accordion Festivals around the country. For example, the AAA Festival is in New York City this month. Cotati, San Antonio, Las Vegas all will have Festivals for your enjoyment. It’s a nice mini vacation for you and your family. Join us on July 15th, bring your accordion, or other instruments, and play for us. Page 4 The Arizona Accordion Club Stationed on a remote Pacific island, a Marine writes to his wife that he needs something to while away the hours so he won’t be preoccupied with all the beautiful native women. His wife sends him her grandfather’s 12-base accordion and suggests he learn to play. A year later he comes home and says, “Baby, I’m so love-starved! Let’s go to bed right now!” “Sure,” she says. “But first, play me something on the accordion!” The Arizona Accordion Club Page 5 Lessons and Repairs Piano Accordion Instructors: Pete Donatella 623 877-1846 Dr. Van Orden 623 480 334 1049 and Chromatic B System accordion Jack Dermody 602 237 5627 Joanne Drum 480 994-4698 Tony Putrino Tony Putrino Accordion & Piano Lessons available in person & via Skype 480-483-3943 www.tonyputrino.com Bonnie Bingener 602-279-0378 and Piano Joan Monti 602-923-3856 Button Accordion Instructor Tony Longoria ( Él habla español ) 602 488 4254 Acordeon Also Bajo Sexto y Bajo Quinto y Bass Guitar.
