Mishal Husain`s visit - Sarah Bonnell School
A
t Sarah Bonnell we are committed
to improve literacy skills for all
students. A key part of this commitment
is to promote the importance of reading
for pleasure. We want to support
students to enjoy reading, and enable
them to read a wide range of good
quality literature.
There is also good evidence to suggest
that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better in tests than those who never do. However, a recent
survey carried out by the National Literacy Trust has indicated a decline in the amount of time children and young
people spend reading for pleasure.
At Sarah Bonnell we are trying to tackle this issue by raising the profile of reading across the school. We have
successfully implemented Readathon across the whole school, which was a fantastic opportunity to help students
to develop a love for reading as well as raise money for terminally ill children. Lots of form classes and curriculum
areas got stuck in, this was particularly evident through the Readathon Art Display; a true symbol of a school coming
together. Overall we managed to raise over £1000 for Readathon, which again was a fantastic achievement and a
complement to our testament and enthusiasm for reading.
We are now adapting the Drop Everything and Read procedure during this term. This again will be a great
opportunity to promote reading across our school community. A DEAR session consists of getting the whole school
to stop, drop what they are doing and to read, for pleasure, for 20 minutes. By encouraging DEAR we are ensuring
that every student has a reading book on them and is actively reading. It’s also a fun way to get into reading as
teachers are also encouraged to DEAR!
Also with World Book Day fast approaching, March 6th 2014, we are very excited to be a part of the celebration.
The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by
providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. That’s why we will be sending out book vouchers
to all students and we will hold various activities across the school to celebrate World Book Day.

Although, we won’t just stop there, as not only are we focusing on reading for pleasure but we
also want to be able to deliver effective reading strategies within our lessons to help our students
develop their reading skills that are core lifelong skills. To help with this, The Literacy Working
Party (which comprises of dedicated and determined teachers from different departments) has
begun to create key reading strategies/resources to support staff.
In all I just wanted to thank you all for your support and hope that we can continue this journey
to help our students reach their potential and see literacy and reading as a lifelong enriching skill.

Swing and how people were not speaking up to the
problems that were occurring until a teenage boy
had recorded vital evidence and uploaded on
Facebook from there measures were taken to help
people. Mishal Husain told us that being a journalist
and a presenter wasn't easy and at times it was
hard, but nothing good comes easy.
At the end of the assembly she was asked questions
about her life and career.
Our future plans are to embed Accelerated Reader (AR) into the school. This is a highly popular, successful and
powerful tool for monitoring and managing independent reading practice. Currently we will be
piloting AR with year 7, 8 and 9 students.
We hope this way we can bring conformity and consistency in our approach to literacy throughout the school. Not only this but the Literacy Ambassadors have been working hard at creating a
Literacy Action Plan for their curriculum areas to support and promote literacy across the school.

Mishal Husain’s visit
On Thursday 9th January, the amazing and inspiring
BBC presenter and journalist, Mishal Husain visited
our school.
We were delighted by her presence and especially
the advice and information she gave when she
talked to all the Year 9 students.
In her assembly, she spoke about her career, what
she does, how dedicated she is and how hard she
worked.
She talked about the inspirational teenager, Malala
Yousafzai, who fought for education even when her
circumstances where tough and demanding. We
Before Mishal Husain left, Simrah Atif gave an
amazing performance covering the song 'let her go'
by passenger, it was an amazing performance and
showed Mishal Husain the talent that we have in

Everyone can agree that Mishal Husain gave a very
encouraging and a
motivating assembly
to everyone. I really
enjoyed her visit as
she gave me advice of
how and what to do
in order for me to
become what I want
to be.

If you have not applied for free
school meals using the new eform you will no longer be able to
claim a free school meal for your
daughter after 31st January 2014.
Therefore, please complete the form at:
www.newham.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals
We are pleased to announce that in December Breakfast with Books won a
grant from Kellogg’s, as well as lots of Kellogg’s vouchers, for the second
year running! We know from last year that this extra funding can help to
provide even more fantastic breakfasts and resources for our girls. We are
very lucky to have received such brilliant support and can now develop the
club even further.
Research and data tells us that reading age is a key indicator for success.
Improving this will raise your daughter’s attainment, leading to better
grades across her school subjects as well as raising her self-esteem.
The sessions run from 7.30 a.m. until 8.25 a.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday
and Friday in H05.
Breakfast with Books has resumed for the New Year now, so it’s a great
time to get involved.
If you do not have an email address to
put on the form, you can use the one
we have set up in school which is
[email protected]
**We currently have spaces for more students to join, so if you’re
interested in your daughter taking part, please ask her to see Ms Evans
or Ms Flowers in H14 for more details**
We will be writing to individual parents
as well but please go online and
complete the form as soon as possible
if your daughter currently receives a
free school meal. If you do not
complete the form, your daughter will
not receive a free school meal after
31st January 2014 and she will have to
bring in a packed lunch or put money
on her identity card.
To ensure that we are meeting the needs of all our students, we
have decided to re-introduce the option of a hot, non-halal meat
meal being made available to staff and students every Friday
lunchtime. Vegetarian options will still be available on that day for
those staff and students who only eat halal meat.
If you have any questions about free
school meals, please contact Ms Gell.
January 2014 ● Issue No. 127
School Meals – starting after half term
Changes to the start of the school day
As you will already be aware, we have put a particular emphasis on punctuality this academic year.
We have introduced 1 hour detentions after school for all those students that are late to school and
whose lateness disrupts the learning of others. These detentions have had a positive impact and the
number of students who are arriving late to school has reduced.
We expect all students to be in school by 8.25 am at the latest each day so they are at their classrooms
for the first lesson and ready to learn at 8.30am. Therefore, to further improve punctuality to lessons we
will be introducing an additional bell to the school day after the half term break. The first bell will sound
at 8.25am each morning. Any student who arrives in school after the 8.25am bell has finished will be
considered to be late to school and given a 1 hour detention after school that day. A second bell will then
sound at 8.30 to signify the start of the first lesson. Any student who was in school at 8.25 am but who
arrives late to the classroom after the second bell has gone at 8.30am will be considered late to lesson
and will be given a suitable sanction by the curriculum area (this could include a conversation with the
teacher or curriculum leader or a curriculum detention for persistent lateness to lessons etc.).
Ms Delaney
We are confident that you will support the school in ensuring that your daughter gets to school before
8.25am and her first lesson before 8.30am.
