With which stage do you associate the
following features?
1. A child only
understands the world
as far as they can
sense it.
2.A child uses signs and
symbols to represent
thoughts.
3.A child is egocentric.
4.A child can solve
problems in a
systematic way.
5.A child has
decentred.
6.A child develops
object permanence.
1.Sensori-motor
8.A child can use
hypothetical thinking.
2.Pre-operational
9.A child can solve
complex problems with 3.Pre-operational
objects in front of
them.

Piaget’s Theory summary
Developed a ‘stage theory’
based on observations of his
children and friends in their
natural settings.
Invented several tasks to test
children (3 mountains,
conservation e.t.c) then
watched them solve problems
Piaget’s Theory
Conclusion - ‘children are
scientists’ - they begin to explore
their world as soon as they open their
eyes for the first time.
Infants are not passive observers, they
are actively involved in making sense of
what they see, hear, feel and discover.
Why might Psychologists
Criticise Piaget?
In pairs jot down 2
possible criticisms of
Piaget’s theory

Criticisms of Piaget’s
Theory
Are stages that fixed or can children
progress through them at different ages?
Does everyone go through all of the stages
or can individuals get ‘stuck’ at a
particular stage?
Does development happen automatically or
does it rely on outside factors, such as
parents?
Did Piaget cover all kinds of thinking or
did he miss out certain types, such as
creative thinking?
Are Piaget’s findings really universal or
culturally biased?

Piaget V Vygotsky
BATs
Describe Vygotsky’s theory (D)
Compare Piaget and Vygotsky’s theories (B)
Judge which is best and why. (A/A*)
Starter - Round Robin
Get into 4ʼs (or 3ʼs)
You all have 90 seconds to think about the Criticisms of
Piagetʼs theory you learnt last lesson.
Tell the person on your left one Criticism
Your partner explains why that is a criticism to you - be
prepared to correct any misconceptions or ask for clarification
Ask the person opposite you for another criticism - if it is the
same as the one you just did, ask for another.
You must now explain why it is a criticism.
Share amongst your group - peer assess the accuracy of the
explanations
Vygotsky -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx84h-i3w8U&feature=related
Vygotsky
In your group of 4 create a summary of the
key parts of Vygotsky’s theory (p113-114)
include these key concepts- culture,
apprentice, scaffolding, zone of proximal
development, individual pace
Each person should write a sentence about
one (or 2) of the key concepts above.
The very brave or poetic amongst you may
like to do activity 8.7 p114 instead!!!
Let’s Share...
The shortest person in your
group should now share one
of the group’s summary
points with the rest of the
class
Now complete in the
gap fill exercise
(independently please!!)
Vygotsky’s theory
Cog dev takes place within a child’s
culture
Child picks up cultural tools for thinking
in their home
Culture teaches us how to think as well as
what to think
Child is an apprentice (works with
someone to learn a trade)
Vygotsky’s theory
Zone of Proximal
Development - gap
between where we
currently are in dev
and where we can move
to with the help of
others
Scaffolding - support
framework to allow
developing child to
get on safely with
its learning and
thinking.
Cog Dev happens at an
individual pace
helped on by
significant people
around them

Evaluate the effectiveness of each (A)

Piaget or
Vygotsky?
You decide!!!
Imagine a line at the end of the room
One end is in favour of Piaget the
other Vygotsky
In the middle both theories are
equally likely
Where do you stand?
Justify your position on the post
it note then put it on the
whiteboard
