Page 2 Sixteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 17, 2016 As we prepare for the Diocesan Synod, join us for a Martha or Mary? People who think of themselves as “pray-ers” love the story of Mary and Martha, while others who characterize themselves as “do-ers” are irritated by it. After all, Martha is an exemplary model of hospitality. She is serving her guest and honoring God in the process, just like Abraham did in the first reading today. So why is Abraham so esteemed and Martha seemingly admonished for exhibiting precisely the same behavior? Martha has done nothing wrong, and Jesus does not put her down for her generous service—though plenty of homilists this Sunday may make it sound that way. Martha fulfills the cultural and religious obligation of hospitality admirably. Mary has chosen to follow another imperative, one that sprang from within her own desire: to be in the company of Jesus. If Martha errs, it’s only in passing judgment over Mary’s choice. Hospitality takes many forms. One of them is presence. —The Transforming Word FREE Summer Speaker Series at Ascension Parish Tuesday, July 19th 7:00pm Understanding the Book of Revelation with Jimmy Akin Tuesday, August 2nd 7:00pm Apologetics for Chickens with Patrick Coffin Tuesday, August 16th 7:00pm The Galileo Affair with Chris Check Tuesday, August 30th 7:00pm Why God Still Matters with Karlo Broussard Enrich your faith this summer by taking advantage of this great speaker series at Ascension Parish— 11292 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., in their Parish Hall. “Listening Session” Saturday, July 23rd at 10am in the Parish Hall In October, the Diocese of San Diego will hold a synod which will focus on the topics of marriage and family life. Each parish in the diocese will have a representative to the synod and a particular topic they are to gather information on. Fr. Mike will be the representative from our parish and we will focus on “the challenge to provide authentic pastoral support for those who are divorced.” Here are the questions we are to think about, pray about and write about: 1. What are the elements necessary for a robust program of pastoral and spiritual support for those undergoing divorce, both during the process and afterward? 2. How can the diocese make the annulment process more accessible for our people? 3. How should we bring an understanding of the internal forum and conscience to our people, not only regarding the topic of participation for those who are divorced and remarried, but for all Catholics in their moral and spiritual lives? At our “Listening Session” on Saturday, July 23rd at 10am in the Parish Hall, Fr. Mike will ask for your input on these questions. It would be helpful if each person participating writes down their answers to these questions. If you are unable to come to the session, please feel free give your written answers to Fr. Mike. We appreciate your making the time to complete this important task. Bishop McElroy will use this information to “provide a moment of profound renewal and growth in our ecclesial support of families in San Diego.” Did Someone say Ice Cream? Don’t forget about our ice cream social after all the Masses this weekend! Many thanks to Mary O’Connor, DDS, for supplying the ice cream! Kid’s Corner July 17, 2016 How Welcoming Are We at St. Didacus Parish? For many individuals and families alike, summer means travel. And summer travel may mean new visitors to our parish for weekend liturgies. How we greet and provide hospitality for our guests says a lot about our practice of good stewardship. Welcoming newcomers to our parish is not just the job of the pastoral staff, ushers, ministers of hospitality or greeters. It is everyone’s responsibility. Here are ten things you can do to provide better hospitality in our parish. 1. Cultivate the virtue of hospitality at Mass. Many Mass attendees tend to gather into little cliques and ignore those who are not members of their particular clique. They are not really inhospitable, just heedless of the need for hospitality. Make hospitality a new habit when you go to Mass. 2. Come early, leave late. Instead of rushing to Mass to be there on time, and then rushing out at its conclusion, make time to come a little early and linger just a bit later. Make room in your busy life to greet and spend time with others at Mass. 3. Go in peace to greet someone! Seek out someone you’ve not met before. Shake their hand, introduce yourself, and take a few moments to welcome them to your parish home, God’s house. 4. Welcome everyone. Not only do visitors need your warm welcome, regular Mass attendees also need a friendly greeting. Develop a good handshake and be enthusiastic about our parish. You are greeting others in the name of Christ. 5. Help newcomers connect. While you are getting to know visitors, introduce them to other parishioners as the opportunity presents itself. Feel free to invite visitors to sit next to you. 6. Say goodbye with genuine warmth. After Mass, bid farewell to visitors, inviting them to return next week. Introduce them to the pastor if the opportunity arises. 7. Avoid parish business. Avoid conducting parish business with others just before or after Mass. Focus on visitors. 8. Give visitors information about the parish. Ensure that a visitor has a bulletin and other information about the parish before they leave. If there is a social gathering after Mass, invite them. Remember, we are Christ’s ambassadors (2 Corinthians 5:20). Our actions and reactions toward visitors at Mass communicate who we are and who we represent. Let us take time to welcome visitors to our parish this summer. Welcoming gestures, however small, will not only have a positive impact on visitors, they will make us more hospitable ambassadors of Christ.
