2013 Annual Report - Carroll Lutheran Village
2
From the Board Chair
As my term as Chairperson comes
to an end, I want to communicate
my thanks to all of the residents and
staff at Carroll Lutheran Village and
to my fellow Board Members.
I marvel at the strong internal
structure that exists in the Village, as
well as the strength and conviction
with which Carroll Lutheran Village
radiates into the larger surrounding
community.
The mission of the Village is
witnessed daily: “dedicated to the
ministry of caring in a Christian
atmosphere fostering quality life and
services for the whole person”.
The diversity that exists in the many
programs and activities defines
Carroll Lutheran Village - from this
year’s extraordinary veterans’ events
which spoke to a remembrance of
important service and sacrifice made
to this nation, to the July evening
devoted to “The Makers” which
highlighted women’s contributions
to making this country strong and
effective - residents gathered many
times to celebrate life and the
achievements for which we can be
proud.
The spiritual life at CLV is impressive,
from the Sunday resident worship
service in Krug Chapel to the
tradition of ending each Board
meeting with joined hands as we
share The Lord’s Prayer.
This year’s strategic priority for
education mirrors the commitment
to lifelong learning for residents and
the beginning of CLV University. I
remember meeting with residents
and members of the local higher
education facilities to develop a
vision for a future that will enhance
the learning opportunities for all.
Additionally, wellness is among our
nation’s highest priorities. Here at
Carroll Lutheran Village, wellness is
advancing at a pace and quality that
can’t be found at other facilities. The
health of our residents is paramount.
The programs and activities are
tailored to be broad enough to
entice everyone.
Today, as I write, Diana Nyad
completed the historic swim from
Cuba to Florida. Swimming for 53
hours, Diana swam 110 miles. She
dreamed of doing this as an 8 year
old. She first attempted it at the age
of 29. She successfully completed it
at the age of 64. It just inspires you
to want to sign up for the Beginner
Swimming for Older Adults class
offered right here at Carroll Lutheran
Village.
The greater community also
recognized the outstanding
commitment that the Village
has made to wellness. This past
year, Carroll Lutheran Village was
recognized with a Worksite Wellness
Award from The Partnership for
a Healthier Carroll County for
becoming a smoke and tobaccofree campus and also received a
Workforce Development Award
from the Carroll County Department
of Economic Development for its
commitment to staff development.
Carroll Lutheran Village is a precious
gem in this community and it has
been an honor over the past six
years to make a small contribution to
its efforts.
Sincerely,
Paula Langmead

From the President & CEO
It is hard to believe that Carroll
Lutheran Village is now in its 33rd
year of service to the Carroll County
community. The annual report is
just a snapshot of the efforts made
by so many to bring to life the
mission of service that embodies
the Village. While we reflect on the
many successes of the past year with
pride, we cannot rest on our laurels.
We must ready ourselves to meet
tomorrow’s challenges with our eyes
and hearts wide open.
We are challenged to serve in an
increasingly changing and regulated
world where Carroll Lutheran Village
is measured by many standards.
Compliance with a myriad of
regulatory entities requires us
to meet those mandates while
continuing to deliver services that
meet the increasingly diverse and
sophisticated demands of today’s
discriminating consumers. In the
Health Care Center, reimbursements
from third parties such as Medicare
and Medicaid have diminished.
The financial pressures of the
post-recession economy create
challenge and opportunity in how we
respond to those requirements and
expectations.
neighbor. We can do both well.
While regulations and metrics are
important, mission comes to life
through the human touch. It is
impossible in this brief message to
relate the experiences I have the
privilege of witnessing everyday as
Carroll Lutheran Village empowers
individuals to meet Christ’s
command to love God and love thy
neighbor. Through the kindness of
others, comfort is given and care is
received.
Electronic Medical Records
technology is being installed in
late 2013 to improve the delivery
of care to residents in the Health
Care Center, Diven House and
rehabilitation services. While
this important tool will advance
the level of care we provide, the
most important benefit is that it
will provide the opportunity for
caregiving staff to spend less time
performing administrative tasks and
more time caring for and loving our
residents.
As a not-for-profit organization, our
mandate is to serve community as
defined in tax laws interpreted by
the Internal Revenue Service. As a
Lutheran social ministry organization,
we are commanded to love our
We love our neighbors at Carroll
Lutheran Village who have outlived
their financial resources by
supporting them in their time of
need. We call on others to support
our ministry of caring through
fundraising efforts including the
annual golf tournament, which
raised a near-record amount in 2013
despite poor weather.
In the years ahead, the ways we
serve community will evolve to meet
those challenges - whether it be a
new concept of care delivery in the
Health Care Center, the creation of a
Center for Healthy Aging to include
a menu of services available to all
older adults in the community, or
revised governance as we prepare
for the construction and opening
of The Lutheran Village at MILLER’S
GRANT.
We have important work to do as
we practice both individually and
corporately the mandate to love
God and love thy neighbor. English
theologian Richard Whately put it
best: “A man is called selfish not
for pursuing his own good, but for
neglecting his neighbor’s.”
Yours in service,
Geary K. Milliken

Who We Are
CLV’s New Look
Last year was an important year for
Carroll Lutheran Village’s image. For
the first time since around 1998, the
Village logo was updated. The new
look can be seen throughout this
report. The religious underpinnings of
the organization are still represented
with a modernized dove and the cross
replacing the ‘t’ in Lutheran. The
open arc that replaces the closed oval
symbolizes open thought, continuity
and hope, all attributes embodied
at Carroll Lutheran Village. While
burgundy remains the primary color,
a blue main accent color has been
added along with three secondary
accent colors and standard fonts. The
new look will be phased in over the
next two years, concluding with major
signage on campus.

Our Impact
A committee of resident
volunteers planned a special
worship service for Veterans Day
2012, which fell on a Sunday.
The residents requested that a
special offering be made to the
Wounded Warrior Project in
honor of the day.
Carroll Lutheran Village is built upon the premise of service. It is not just
our obligation – it is our honor and privilege to support our community.
Our efforts demonstrate our commitment to our mission, our residents
and the greater community as a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization.
This report contains some of the many initiatives that Carroll Lutheran
Village engaged in during Fiscal Year 2013 (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013).
