Another great fortnight at Seville Primary School. Our Before and After School Program is growing steadily as more of our families take advantage of the program that they have wished for so long. Olivia is adding more and more exciting activities to her program. We are now having to turn interested students away from joining in the program after school. They are very welcome to join in the program if parents would like them to join. Olivia has advertised her hours on her web page and in her documentation - her hours are negotiable upon parent request but her regular hours are 7:00am 9:00am & 3:30pm - 6:00pm. We still have some families choosing use UYCH service and so their bus will still pick their children up from the school as per DEECD request. Parent Information Sessions were held by staff during the week. The feedback I have received form staff and parents will help us to continue to provide parents with the information that they would like - improvement is a never-ending process. As you can see from the above photo our Federal member of Parliament, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honorable Mr. Tony Smith, spent Friday afternoon at our assembly presenting our Young Leaders with Leadership Certificates. He also spent plenty of time after school with photos and having friendly chats with the many parents that attended the assembly. He has always been a very strong and enthusiastic supporter of our school. Yesterday our Yr 5&6 went off to Lilydale Lake for Kayaking. We have plenty of photos - I hope you might see some of these on your child’s classroom blog (they are running on the office foyer TV). We have a small working bee next Friday night after school in preparation for next Saturday’s Car Boot Sale. A list of jobs will be sent home to families on Tuesday. Following the jobs the school invites parents to stay and enjoy some refreshments and nibbles. The working bee should run from 4 - 7pm. Please feel free to give what ever time you are able to give. Until next hotline let’s keep working together to keep Seville the greatest place to Grow and Learn Together. I hope you and your household are travelling well. This edition I wanted to look at the difference between peer conflict and bullying. Peer conflict is a common thing amongst children and can be a great learning ground for life skills such as being assertive; resilient, and learning to say “no” and “stop”. Bullying, on the other hand, is ongoing, persistent targeting by one child toward another, and is generally less common. It is hard to hear your child say that ‘Sally’ or ‘Simon’ did something they found upsetting. However, as parents we have a crucial role to play in supporting our child, but we may first need to let the feeling of wanting to rush to their aid and sort the problem out pass. One of the best ways we can help our child is to be non-reactive. Giving your child time to talk about what has happened and how they feel is important. It may be that they do need some adult help to solve the problem, but as we all know talking about a problem often brings it back into perspective and helps us work out what we need to do next, if anything. Another thing we may need to do is, depending on the age of our children, ask them if they are just wanting to off load; are they needing some advice or ideas about how to solve the problem; do they want us to inform the teacher? It can be hard to remain calm and simply offer support or ideas rather than solving the problem for them, but in doing so we give our children a strong message that we have confidence in their ability to ‘use their words’ and solve their problems themselves - a vital life skill. Rich blessings til next edition, Elissa White Chaplain We have a lot of mulch in the school grounds, and we invite school families who are interesting in using the mulch to please help themselves.
