Formula Abbreviations
Blended herbal formulas contain a combination of carefully selected herbs in which the main
ingredients are reinforced by others to maximize the synergy of the herbs. Our extracts are made with pure
grain-sourced ethanol that is gluten-free and non-GMO. We use a pure kosher vegetable-sourced glycerine.
The following abbreviations are used by Master Formulae to identify different types of processes/formulae:

The Liquid Extract Advantage
Higher Bioavailability
The active ingredients in a liquid extract are in a form that provides greater levels of bioavailability than in capsule
and tablet forms of herbal products.
Rapid Absorption
The active ingredients of the herbs begin to enter the bloodstream as soon as the tincture is placed in the mouth,
compared to capsules/tablets, which must first be digested in the stomach before the herbs they contain are released.
Topical / Oral Application
Liquid extract dosages are generally set for internal use, but they can also be applied externally as a topical where
appropriate. We always recommend consulting with a licensed health practitioner first.
Shelf Life
Liquid extracts store well without losing their effectiveness. Those with alcohol levels over 25% do not require
refrigeration after being opened.

Alcohol - An Important Ingredient
Why alcohol is an important part of liquid extracts:
Unlocks and extracts the active ingredients of the herb
Stabilizes and preserves the effectiveness of the active ingredients
Is the carrier substance that transfers the active ingredient into the body through absorption processes
Can help to support the immune system, in small amounts, in its defense against illness
There are people who are physically sensitive to alcohol and may want to consider other alternatives, but the
amount of alochol in a dose of liquid extract is very small and safe. We use only high quality pure grain-based alcohol.
For those who want to avoid the alcohol, simply add the required dose to a small amount of hot boiled water.
Most of the alcohol will evaporate quickly while the integrity of the herbal active ingredients will be preserved. Allow to
cool slightly or completely before drinking.
What about the Taste?
Everyone knows that some tinctures do not have a pleasant taste, but the bitter taste can actually be good
for your health! Humans are sensitive to taste; chemoreceptors in the mouth can trigger a chain of reactions in our
bodies. It is often stated that bitter is better for your health. This is because bitter greens and herbs stimulate the taste
buds, which in turn stimulate digestive processes. The release of saliva and gastric juices and stimulation of bile flow
actually prepare the body to absorb and distribute the active ingredients of the herbal extract. The bitter taste results
in faster distribution and therefore, faster results.
Helpful hints for taking tinctures:
Tinctures can be taken with a small amount of juice if needed to help mask the taste. Try rinsing the mouth
with a small amount of juice/water. Then take the dose of tincture holding it under the front of the tongue this area of the mouth has many capillaries for rapid absorption. Swallow the tincture with a second mouthful
of juice/water. This method is helpful for those who struggle to take a tincture but don’t want to wait the 10-20
minutes for the body to dissolve a capsule.
The benefits of some herbal teas can be improved by adding tinctures to the tea (e.g. Lemon Balm,
Chamomile, Ginger, Peppermint, etc.).
There is a reason why so many health practitioners still prescribe liquid extracts for clients - they
work more effectively!
Pregnancy and Children
As a general rule, NO herbs should be used during pregnancy, except under the direction of a qualified
Naturopath or Medical Herbalist.
Always check the Cautions and Contraindications regarding use of herbs for children, women who are
pregnant or breastfeeding, and women intending to conceive.
