New Eparchial Administrator for Eparchy of Passaic
Father Edward G. Cimbala, D.Min was elected
to serve as Administrator of the Byzantine Catholic
Eparchy of Passaic by the College of Consultors on
Monday, April 23, the Feast of Saint George. He was
elected to fill the administrative vacancy created by
the elevation of the former Bishop of Passaic, Bishop
William Skurla, as Metropolitan Archbishop of the
Archeparchy of Pittsburgh.
May God grant him many blessed years!
Byzantine Seminary Press Welcomes All
Even before Perrysville Ave. was
part of Pittsburgh, there was
life at 3643 Perrysville Ave. Lt
William W. Lewis, lived there,
and before long he married his
fiance Clara E. Klemm, and
life continued for them. But in
1950, this house and the
property surrounding it
were acquired by the Eparchy of Pittsburgh for the
construction of SS. Cyril
& Methodius Byzantine
Seminary on Perrysville
Ave. Other homes were
acquired for Chancery
and Episcopal Residence
on nearby Riverview Ave.
3643 Perrysville
Ave. was then converted
to the Byzantine Catholic World printing house
and eventually opened as
the Byzantine Seminary Press as a place for our priests
to procure their needed Liturgical items. Thanks to the
hard work of each of those who have gone before, it
has also become an ever-growing and evolving religious
gift shop geared to the needs of those thirsting for and
interested in Eastern Christianity, particularly Byzantine
Catholicism.

Máriapócs - A National Place of Worship
The most popular shrine for
the Hungarian Greek Catholics is
The Weeping Black Madonna of
Máriapócs that is venerated in the
famous Shrine of Pócs.
In 1696, during a Divine
Liturgy in a simple little wooden
baroque church, the faithful
looking up at the icon observed
teardrops running abundantly
from both eyes of the Blessed
Virgin. This small wooden icon
wept continually for 14 days and
then intermittently wept until
December 8. Thus, for Greek
Catholic believers, this icon
became known as the weeping
Virgin Mary before whom they
prayed for alleviation of the difficult situation in their country.
At that time, the Turkish army
was waging a war in the country
south of Pócs. In a battle, the
Kurucz army camp near Pócs
fought for independence in their
home land, - having sealed the
fate of the Turkish army through
the intersession of the weeping
Blessed Virgin of Pócs.
The wonderful news about
the weeping icon reached Vienna. Emperor Leopold I, at his wife’s request, had the
icon removed from the 17th century baroque church and
brought to Vienna. The sacred journey of the icon to
Vienna was accompanied by a painter who made three
copies of the icon. One copy was for Kassa; another was
for a village and the third poor copy was given to the
church in Pócs. This poor rendition of the original icon
wept in 1715 on August 1st, 2nd and 5th. A committee
of witnesses examined the icon and confirmed the weeping to be real tears.
In December 1905, this copy of the icon of Mary wept
a second time with interruptions for a whole month. The
authenticity of weeping was ascertained by a committee of
both religious and secular authorities.
The pilgrimages of believers coming to the existing
12
small wooden
church in Pócs
grew. It became
necessary to build a
larger church. The
major superior of
the Basilian monks,
Father Gennadius
György Bizánczy,
started building a
new church, from
their own savings.
Bishop Mánuel Mihály Oslavszky continued the building
of the church and
also began the
construction for a
monastery.
The construction of
the new church was
completed in 1756.
The two towers of
the church were
completed much
later in 1856. Time
elapsed before the
beautiful ornate
interior of the
church was completed in the years,
1885-1888. In 1896, new icons were written by József
Boksay, and Emmanuel Petrasovski painted the interior of
the church. Another exterior and interior renovation was
undertaken in 1946. On September 8, 1946, thousands
of pilgrims came for the 250th anniversary of the weeping
icon of Mary and for the blessing of the newly renovated
church. Two years later in 1948 the devotional shrine of
Máriapócs was awarded the title of “basilica minor” by
Pope Pius XII.
The outstanding day for Máriapócs and the history
of the Hungarian Greek Catholic community was the
18th of August 1991. Blessed Pope John Paul II of happy
memory, visited Máriapócs and celebrated a Divine
Liturgy in the Hungarian language of the Byzantine
rite. This Divine Liturgy was celebrated in front of the
Glory to Jesus Christ
icon, in the presence of hundreds of thousands of faithful
people. In memory of this papal pilgrimage the basilica
received a new bronze gate on which the leaders of our
church and the impressive scenes of the visit can be seen.
On 1st December 2005, the Hungarian Catholic Episcopacy pronounced that the Máriapócs Shrine is a National
Place of Worship for the entire country.
Working Together Helps Las Vegas Church
In time for the Great Fast, the parishioners
of Saint Gabriel the Archangel Byzantine Catholic
Church, Las Vegas, NV, made 250 dozen pirohi in a
three day pirohi fundraiser.
Using only the finest ingredients, the volunteers made delicious pirohi. A large number of
parishioners took part in preparing, filling, pinching
and cooking the pirohi. This resulted in a pleasant and
April - June, 2012
community building weekend for all.
Marie Moler, organizer of the event, presented
our pastor, Father Marcus Gomori, with a check for
$1500 on March 18, 2012. When all the pirohi were
sold, the total profit was $2,000. We were pleased to
present these funds to our pastor for the parish building fund.

Thousands Gather At The Religious Education
Congress, Anaheim, CA
The theme, Voice Infusing Life, created an atmosphere
of reflective listening during the annual Religious Education Congress held at the Anaheim Convention Center
in March. Reflecting upon this theme, Sister Edith
Prendergast, RSC, Director, Office of Religious Education for the Los Angeles Archdiocese wrote: “Earth in
its thousand voices praises God… and so it was from the
beginning, the Voice of God rang out, infusing all of creation with abundant life. At other times, this still small
voice calms troubled spirits, enabling all to reach for new
horizons… And today the voice reverberates and we echo
God’s voice infusing life… giving hope and refreshing
spirits.”
Those words became a reality for those thousands who visited our exhibit of the Byzantine Catholic Eparchy of Phoenix. Many expressed their desire
to come to know and appreciate in deeper levels the
wonders and beauty of the Eastern Catholic Churches
expressed in the Eastern Catholic theology, spirituality
and liturgy. With the assistance of clergy, religious and
laity from various Byzantine Catholic parishes various
questions were addressed. Through the generosity of
the Greek Catholic Union and the Knights of Columbus, informative materials on our Byzantine Catholic
Church were distributed. In addition to the handouts,
Mrs. Theresa Danovich Olsyck demonstrating her skills
with writing an icon.
14
vestments, liturgical vessels and posters explaining the
various aspects of our Eastern Catholic Churches were
showcased.
This year the Divine Liturgy according to the Armenian Eastern Catholic Church was celebrated during
the Congress. Rev. Gregory Chahin of St. Gregory the
Illuminator Armenian Church was the main celebrant.
Many of our Byzantine clergy concelebrated the Liturgy:
Very Rev. Joseph Hutsko, St. Nicholas of Myra, Fontana,
CA; Rev. Robert Rankin, St. Melany Byzantine Catholic
Church, Tucson, AZ; Very Rev. Mel Rybarczyk, CR,
Proto-Cathedral of St. Mary, Sherman Oaks, CA; Msgr.
George Vida, Church of the Annunciation, Anaheim,
CA; and Rev. John Kovach, retired priest of the Eparchy
of Parma.
The theme of the Congress continues to live on.
May the Voice Infusing life continue to inspire each of
us to listen to the voice of God and to boldly witness,
express and share the Good News with which we have
been blessed as Byzantine Catholics.
Please mark your calendars and plan to join us
for the next RE Congress to be held at the Anaheim
Convention Center, February 23-24, 2013. The theme is
Enter the Mystery.

Cathechist Certified
During the Congress, Jonathan Deane, a Catechist from
Holy Angels Byzantine Catholic Church, San Diego, was
presented a certificate indicating his completion of the
requirements necessary for Catechist Certification. Jonathan is the first Catechist of our Eparchy to have diligently
worked and studied to achieve this goal. Congratulations,
Jonathan!
Bishop Gerald’s Ad Limina Visit
Recently, Pope Benedict XVI met with the Eastern Catholic bishops
of the U.S. in their Ad Limina visit to the tombs of the apostles in
Rome, Italy. It was an historic occasion since, for the first time, all
Eastern Catholic Bishops of all the Eastern Catholic Rites in the U.S.
attended as a group (Region XV of the U.S. Catholic Conference of
Bishops). Previously, each bishop went with the local Roman Catholic
Bishops of his region. The pope met with the Eastern Catholic Bishops on two occasions: once to give his final address to the U.S Conference of Bishops (Friday May 18th), and the second was to interview
the Eastern Catholic Bishops on the status of their eparchies (Saturday
May 19)
Pictured with Pope Benedict are L: to R: Bishop Gerald of the
Eparchy of Phoenix, together with the Protosyncellus of the Eparchy,
Rt. Rev. Stephen Washko.
