Welcome!
As President of the North Shore Community College Foundation, it is my pleasure to
present to you the distinguished recipients of the 2012 Foundation Scholarship Awards.
Today, the NSCC Foundation Board of Directors will award 186 scholarships totaling
over $150,264 in financial assistance to students who excel both in the classroom and in
service to their college and community.
For 27 years, the NSCC Foundation has presented these scholarships to NSCC students.
Since 1985, more than 3,078 students have been awarded over $2,400,000 to help pay for
increasing educational expenses. With the generosity of individual, corporate and business donors, we continue to provide the funding for students to succeed.
Please join me as we recognize the outstanding educational achievements of these distinguished North Shore Community College students. We congratulate the student recipients
as well as the NSCC faculty and staff who so ably help them reach their goals. We thank
the donors who, through their financial support, have made these awards possible and we
invite them to share in our accomplishments. We welcome friends and guests to rejoice
with us.
Together, we celebrate the enthusiasm of North Shore Community College in recognition of teaching, learning, and community engagement. Together, we look forward to the
challenges of the new economy – united in purpose “seeking better lives for North Shore
residents and a vibrant future for the region.”

John Hruska, Everett, MA
BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION TRANSFER, CLASS OF 2012
John Hruska is a business administration transfer student with a passion for learning, leading,
meeting new people, and North Shore Community College. When he graduates this May, there
will be few corners of NSCC that he has left untouched. Claiming he came to college as an
unmotivated student, his time here has been truly transformational, and NSCC has benefited
from the experience. John has been extremely involved with Student Government, serving
in various leadership positions including being elected student representative to the North
Shore Community College Board of Trustees. John has volunteered for countless community
service projects, fundraising activities, and with a dedicated group of student senators, significantly elevated the work and commitment of the group. He spent a semester interning in the
Massachusetts State House in the office of Majority Leader Senator Fred Berry and represented the college in Washington DC, and throughout the country, at student leadership
conferences. He is proud to say that everything fell into place for him at NSCC. In turn, he
has done everything within his power to inform and engage his fellow students. “Too many
students come in, get only what they need, and leave. They don’t take advantage of the
tremendous resources this college has to offer. I’ve done what I can to change that.”

Kleber Martins Costa, Lynn, MA
ENGINEERING SCIENCE, CLASS OF 2012
“Priceless” is the way Kleber Martins Costa describes the value of the education he has
received at NSCC. Costa came to this country from his native Brazil 11 years ago, with a
profound sense of honor, determined to succeed against all odds. He considers education
the cornerstone of his personal and professional pursuits. At NSCC he has found a “wonderful and close-knit faculty and administration eagerly collaborating to help each student
achieve his or her full potential.” He is an honor and Phi Theta Kappa student with a 3.92
GPA, ranked first two years running in the NSCC Math Competition, and was a peer tutor
through Service-Learning. Now he plans to go on to earn his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and become “one of the best local professionals.” Kleber is receiving an
Alumni Association Scholarship.
Caitlyn Berns, Peabody, MA
ACCOUNTING, CLASS OF 2013
“You never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option you have,” notes Caitlyn
Berns. She originally came to NSCC as part of a dual enrollment program, graduating a year early
from high school. She went on to Franklin Pierce University where she excelled and was president
of her class and treasurer of the Law Club. Her dream of becoming a lawyer was steadily progressing until at 19 she learned she was pregnant. She quickly shifted gears only to be set back by the
departure of her baby’s father with most of their assets. She began her own daycare business and
through it, discovered her love of accounting. This led her again to NSCC where as a single,
full-time working mom she earned a 4.0 GPA last semester and became a member of Phi Theta
Kappa. While Caitlyn has overcome much adversity in her young life, she has certainly utilized
her experiences to learn and grow. Caitlyn is receiving the Georgetown Bank scholarship.
Tyler Frazer, Beverly, MA
COMPUTER NETWORKING, CLASS OF 2013
Two years of home schooling in his junior and senior years earned Tyler Frazer the ability to
finish high school a year early. He subsequently earned perfect placement scores at NSCC –
one tested him out of pre-calculus – a course he had never taken before. His computer skills
were such that he was able to help identify an area of a test that needed to be upgraded to
reflect current technology assessment criteria. He is part of the college’s TRiO program.
Outside of college he participates in a Bible education project to help people improve their
lives and works for his father’s wholesale delivery business. He looks forward to getting a
job configuring and maintaining computer networks beyond graduation. Tyler is receiving

transfer to a four-year school to become a nurse. A professor notes of Alma, “She was strong
enough to leave everyone behind to go to a country with a different language and she did what
she needed to do to get where she wanted to be. She overcame language issues, convinced her
husband that she should attend college, cares for her two young children, works in a bank and
attends college full-time, maintaining a 3.8 GPA.” Alma became an American citizen last summer. Alma is the recipient of a Cummings Scholarship.
