months looking for the perfect place to
retire.
“We looked many places,” Donald said.
But with special comforts of a chapel,
laundry rooms in the apartments and
a beautiful balcony, Donald said the
Oxbow Lake campus shot to the top of
the list.
Shortly after moving to Oxbow Lake,
Donald learned that Saint Therese
wanted to expand the Oxbow Lake
campus to include a care center. Donald
said he immediately liked the idea of
bringing a care center to the campus in
the event either he or Cathy became ill
and needed additional support.
Donald contacted Saint Therese
Foundation Director John LeBlanc
about contributing to the project.
Donald was specifically interested in
creating a charitable gift annuity with
Saint Therese. Unfortunately, Saint
Therese did not offer charitable gift
annuities.

through therapy

little known secret…well, until
now. Mary Jane recently discovered she is
a beautiful painter.
“I asked [John] to pursue it a little bit,”
Donald said with a smile.
With a little assistance from therapist Larry
Homan from Art without Boundaries,
Mary Jane created a beautiful painting that
was featured in an art show held at Saint
Therese at Oxbow Lake on Wednesday,
March 30.
The pair got right to work and in just
over a year, as fundraising for the
expansion project was in full swing;
Saint Therese collaborated with the
Mary Jane and her husband Phil each
created a painting with Larry that was
featured at the art show. Phil’s painting
entitled “The Black Tree,” drew the
attention of his children.

As I write this letter, the Minnesota state government shut down
has just ended. As we anxiously wait to learn where the coveted
monies will be allocated, we know for certain funding for senior
care and services will drastically change. Both parties proposed
significant cuts to senior care and even the best case scenario will
force a harsh reality upon all senior care facilities.
While we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, we
must remember our Saint Therese senior communities have much
to celebrate.
Families, friends, donors and volunteers of Saint Therese
gathered for a beautiful day of golfing, enticing games and
delicious food at the 9th Annual Saint Therese Foundation Golf Classic in June. The event
raised nearly $40,000 for Saint Therese senior communities.
In July, the Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake campus began building a 64-bed expansion
featuring transitional and long-term care suites and wellness center. We will be one step closer
to fulfilling our mission to provide a full continuum of care to our seniors at each campus. It
will truly be a life changing addition for the seniors and families we serve.
The Saint Therese of New Hope campus will host their tenant family picnic in August. The
free event attracts almost 1,000 tenant friends and family members to our campus for an
evening of food, fun and games for all ages.
Our newest campus, Saint Therese at St. Odilia, is beginning to make a name for itself in the
Shoreview community. The intimate 8-bed palliative care home is growing daily as we serve
seniors through specialized and holistic care.
Saint Therese is dedicated to the well-being of each individual and that mission will not falter
with the changing winds of government.
I encourage you to be an advocate for senior care and contact your local state representative.
Share your story and ask them to support funding for senior care and services so we can
continue to provide innovative care to our senior communities.

Catholic Community Foundation to offer charitable gift
annuities to all donors.
What is a charitable gift annuity?
A charitable gift annuity is a simple contract in which an
individual makes an irrevocable donation in the form of
cash, marketable securities or other assets in return for a fixed
payment amount for the rest of his or her lifetime. A charitable
gift annuity can be designated for one or two people, so an
individual and/or their loved one can receive payments for life.
Donald, who has charitable gift annuities with other
institutions, feels a charitable gift annuity is a great addition to
any investment portfolio.
“If any of my investments run out, I will still have money
coming in,” Vandergon said. “I felt the charitable gift annuity
should be apart of our portfolio because we would be covering
ourselves for the short-term and long-term.”
Update: Since Donald was interviewed for this article, his
beloved wife Catherine passed away. Saint Therese is very
grateful to Donald for sharing their story.
Other benefits of a charitable gift annuity include an immediate
and substantial Federal tax deduction (per IRS limits), secured
and guaranteed income for a lifetime and recognition as a
Saint Therese Heritage Society member.
However, Donald believes that the greatest benefit lies within
the act of giving. “You have to have a desire to give to Saint
Therese,” Donald said.
Most gifts given through a charitable gift annuity will
ultimately go into a permanently restricted endowment fund.
Giving to the endowment fund supports the mission of Saint
Therese and provides us with the tools to offer a full continuum
of care for seniors.

How does it work?
If you currently have a $10,000 CD (Certificate
of Deposit) with an interest rate of 1.25%* for 60
months, you could receive approximately $640 in
interest after five years.
However, if you are 85 years old and donate
$10,000 through a charitable gift annuity you
could receive an interest rate of 8.4%*. With an
interest rate of 8.4% you could collect an annual
payment of approximately $840 every year of your
lifetime.

The Suites to open fall 2012
A
fter years of research, planning and fundraising, Saint
Therese is happy to announce we have broken ground
on the Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake campus skilled
care suites and wellness center.
From the very beginning, the vision for Saint Therese at
Oxbow Lake included a state-of-the-art continuum of care
community that offered the full array of housing and care
options for seniors.
Now that vision is becoming a reality. The new 64-bed
addition will feature “Suites” of both transitional and longterm care options in a “neighborhood model”. The model is
designed so residents will be grouped in smaller areas rather
than in large wings. Other features include private suites,
a fitness center with a therapy pool, therapy services and
family-style dining in each neighborhood.

“It was a wonderful surprise to see the
painting,” said Maureen Brenk, Phil’s
daughter.
“I thought, ‘wait until I show them what
dad did’,” said Brenk, referring to her other
siblings. “I was amazed.”
Therapy disguised
The Saint Therese at Oxbow Lake
Therapeutic Recreation department
contacted Larry after hearing about the
unique Mneme therapy program through
a colleague.
According to the Art without Boundaries
web site, Mneme therapy is an “experience”
that uses “everyday pleasurable experiences
in a unique combination like singing,
painting, movements, story telling and
praise.”
The therapeutic recreation team thought
the special type of therapy might appeal
to some of their tenants and within weeks,

The therapy session begins with Larry
speaking with the individual and asking
them about details of their life. Sometimes
participants speak, other times, they sit
silent.
Larry asks the individual to point out an
image in his collection he or she would like
to create. Larry then starts to place globs
of paint in certain areas around a pizza
box top that acts as a “canvas”. He asks the
individual to move their brush up, down,
left and right. He uses words like “horizon”
and “boundaries” to guide the painter as
he or she creates.
Larry said the movements and images that
are created trigger forgotten memories.
He said while the individual paints he
asks questions about the image they are
creating.
Tenant Louis Fournier, sat silently
throughout the painting process until Larry
started asking about the fall picture he was
painting. Louis began talking immediately,
telling Larry the painting reminded him
of Red Lake where he would visit with a
group of friends twice a year saying he had
a “really nice time there.” Louis named his
painting “Firedance”.
Larry said every individual has a unique
experience when they paint. “It’s all about
pulling memories from their minds,” Larry
said.
Pointing at her painting during the art
show, Mary Jane recalled her experience
with Larry by saying “He just told me start
and said ‘do this’ or ‘do that’ and all of a
sudden it looked like this.”

said “I had a wonderful time. This is so
great!”

On Monday, June 20, nearly 144 golfers participated in
the 9th Annual Saint Therese Foundation Golf Classic,
presented by Frana Companies Inc. The enthusiastic
golfers played 18 holes and took part in several traditional
hole games such as closest to the pin and longest drive.
Golfers also used their skills and maybe a little luck to try
and drive a marshmallow the furthest. This year, several
Saint Therese families joined us, playing in honor of a
loved one. We are happy to report that nearly $40,000
was raised for Saint Therese seniors. Thank you to the
