“
At Al Hosn Gas, we believe that adherence
to core values is key to sustainable success.
Innovation is one of our core values, which
allows us to follow and further best practices
and leading edge technologies in a cost effective and
environmentally safe manner.
We understand innovation as doing things better and
smarter. It involves capitalizing on our resources,
empowering people to do what they do best and utilizing
the power of diverse ideas to tackle challenges. Thus,
we have successfully crossed several milestones.
The Shah Gas Development Project was divided into
(8) major Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC)
packages and awarded to (6) EPC contractors.
On the projects front, Al Hosn Gas implemented
the innovative idea to capture all project life cycle
documents/records into a single module. Consequently,
a full-fledged Electronic document Management System
(EDMS) was implemented across SGD projects with
optimized cost, offering a robust solution since project
start in 2010.
Due to the complex nature of the SGD project with
multiple contractors, a centralized web based EDMS
repository solution provided a means to capture records
from FEED, ITT, EPC phases up to final handover. The
system also provides the company with early visibility
to validate the completeness of contractor/vendor
2
documents with revision control to eliminate anomalies.
This innovative approach streamlined the progressive
final documentation handover to company operation
environment.
On the HSE front we received two ADNOC awards for
HSE innovation. The first was presented for company
standard on HAZard study for Escape Evacuation
and Rescue (HAZEER). Al Hosn Gas implemented
the HAZEER process to identify specific and suitable
crisis and emergency response controls. Al Hosn Gas
was awarded a Runner-Up Innovation award for “The
BowTie Lifecycle Process,’ which aims to generate
and use BowTies to manage its process risks through
updating bowties with active participation of technical
authorities from different disciplines.
Al Hosn Gas management listens to employees and
truly values their ideas. This is evident in the stop
card policy of drilling, in which any staff member,
regardless of rank, can stop the work using a stop card
and suggest the proper action to avoid a possible HSE
risk. In the past 12 months Rig 476 alone had 19,000
stop cards, with 260 prize winning stop cards testifying
of the importance of safety as well as innovation and
continuous improvement to our work.
I look forward to your contributions with more
innovations.

Strong Q1 Performance for Al
Hosn Gas
Al Hosn Gas achieved a 131% out of a maximum performance score of 150%
in Q1 2014. Last year, the company proactively and successfully handled the
performance management process and eligible employees were rewarded with
a performance bonus based on a KPI score of 135.2%. Performance has been
sadly affected by a road traffic fatality that occurred in February, depriving the
Company of 19% points of 150%.
Al Hosn Gas is targeting the 150% maximum for the
remainder of 2014. For such a challenging endeavor
the company will redouble its focus on HSE, ensuring
there is no work related injury, illness or serious
environmental incident during the rest of the year as
work shifts to commissioning and start up. It is also
required to achieve, in a safe and environmentally
responsible manner, 50% gas production by October
and 100% by November 2014.
Al Hosn Gas needs to accomplish the planned project
milestones that will help in meeting the production
commencement schedule. The company will have to
recruit approximately 120 additional UAE nationals
during the rest of the year in order to meet the
Emiratization target of 54% compared to an actual
42% as of March 2014. With respect to drilling it is
required to complete a minimum of 29 wells by year
end compared to 22 wells at the end of March 2014.

safety and risks prevention, and reported more than 19 thousand stop cards for
safety purposes during drilling, on an average of 50 stop cards daily.
The ceremony was attended by Mr. Saif Ahmed
Al Ghafli, CEO, Mr. Rick Callahan, Senior Vice
President – Development, Mr. Medhat Al Habsi,

Packages 2, 3, and 4 Achieve 143
Million Safe Man Hours
The Shah Gas Development Project principal contractors recently reached
significant safety milestones. Saipem, contractor of Packages 2&3, achieved
94 million safe man-hours with a peak work force of 21,500 workers, while
Samsung, contractor of Package 4, completed 40 million safe man-hours with a
peak work force of 8,500 people.
“Considering the scale and complexity of the work
and the size and diversity of the workforce, these are
outstanding results,” said Mansoor Mohamed AlMehairbi. “This level of achievement has only been
accomplished thanks to the high HSE standards set
by the Project and the excellent working relationship
between the company’s HSE, PMT, PMC, EPC and
their sub-contractors,” he added.
Many factors contributed to the successful
accumulation of safe man-hours, including in-depth
training programs about all phases of construction
and commissioning, as well as wide site safety
campaigns on driving, gloves, working at heights,
falling objects, among others. Practices are regularly
reviewed to avoid future safety incidents, and
lessons learned from previous incidents are properly
communicated to the work force. A large part of this
success is also attributed to the construction team
supervisors, whose persistent effort ensured that the
highest safety standards are being followed.

Iftar Cannon Returns to
Abu Dhabi
Fasting people are thrilled to hear the iftar cannon in the
Holy Month of Ramadan at the Maghreb call for prayer
time, signaling that they can break their fast.
There are different stories about the history of the iftar
cannon, but they all date back to Egypt, where a Wali
(governor) once tested a military cannon. The testing
coincided with sunset on a first day of Ramadan. People
thought that this was a new system introduced by the
governor, and were thrilled about this idea. Not having
heard the cannon the next day, a group of highbrows
went to see the governor and asked him to keep firing
the iftar cannon.
The cannon sound was later on recorded and diffused
at iftar time for different reasons, one of which was the
shell explosion effects on the surrounding buildings.
But with the proven sighting of Ramadan crescent this
year, the iftar cannon returned to Abu Dhabi. Residents
heard the cannon’s first three shots, ushering the start
of the holy month. The cannon firing continued daily,
announcing the iftar (breaking the fast) and imsak
(beginning of fasting) times.
24
The iftar cannon is surrounded by soldiers at the Sheikh
Zayed Mosque, Qasr Al Hosn (Al Hosn Fort) and some
selected locations in Abu Dhabi. The return of this social,
popular tradition is accompanied with daily ceremony
for the spectaculars. The task of firing the cannon at
these locations is taken up by the support services from
the military. The armed forces maintained, rehabilitated
and equipped a number of old cannons.

Continuous Self-Motivation
by: Faisal Al Ali - CCPRM
Motivation is the key to winning and success. Without motivation, people cannot
continue to hope, be determinant and put efforts. Motivation is the driving force that
raises human competencies and provides the energy to get the work done.
There are many facets of incentives, but in terms of the
source, they can be divided to two types: internal incentives
and external incentives (financial or moral). When you read
this article because you love management, you are driven by
an internal incentive. However, if you have to read it to finish
a study research, you are driven by an external incentive.
When the employee is pushed to work using many external
incentives, we do not get creative results, although the
set target is met. The road to creativity and extraordinary
productivity passes through self-motivation. This type of
motivation is the basis of personal excellence and ultrasuccess. The individual does not reach self-motivation
when under stress. Motivation is an organized, continuous
process that becomes a lifestyle. This process confirms the
individual’s ability to meet his objectives and pushes him to
work further despite obstacles of non-favorable results. The
external incentives turn, then, into more stable and effective
internal incentives.
The key steps to continuous self-motivation are:
• Focus: define your objective and set your plan in clear
steps that lead to the objective, and then identify and
provide the needed resources, while focusing on meeting
one objective or a few correlated objectives.
• Pleasure and fun: add the pleasure and fun factor to
the work and reward yourself whenever you meet an
objective or a considerable part thereof.
• Reading: you have to read about experiences and
success stories in your field. These give new ideas and
a fresh vision, create an atmosphere of competition and
increase the desire to succeed.
• Look at the full half of the glass: you have to remember
your achievement every now and then, as a proof of your
ability to achieve more. Surround yourself with positive
people, and if you have to work with negative ones,
turn desperation and negative energy into motivation to
achieve what they claim you are not capable of.
• Use the power of imagination: imagine yourself after
succeeding. Imagine you met your objective, and all the
related feelings and thoughts.
Enthusiasm at all stages: many people take the road of
success but never finish it. Reaching the end requires
continuous enthusiasm by trying new ideas and ways to do
the work. Reaching success also requires a continuous selfreminder of the objective importance. You can post on your
desk motivational quotes and pictures.
Plans adjustment: to continue the road, the plan needs to be
adjusted according to new variables and information. You
need then to evaluate the activities related to the objective.
Continue your useful activities and stop the ones that are time
consuming. Do not look at obstacles as if they were eternal
or without solution. Problems are part of the road and face
everyone who works. Therefore, be flexible and patient.
There is a formula that says: (motivation = the value of your
work X the work success likelihood). This means that, if you
want to reach the highest levels of motivation, you have to
understand the real effect of your work, and create all possible
circumstances to achieve success. Your boss might be the best
of all. However, the motivation coming from within is stronger
than any incentive your boss could offer you. If the others do
not offer you an incentive to succeed, will you still be waiting
for someone to incite your energy and, thus, achieve your goal?
The start comes from within.
Self-motivation is an organized, continuous process that becomes a lifestyle. This
process confirms the individual’s ability to meet his objectives and pushes him to
work further despite obstacles.
