GIGS AT A GLANCE
JULY
Double shows, now there’s
a discussion subject. In NYC
all the jazz clubs do double
shows every night of the week,
which means they turn the house. We only do this at weekends,
preferring a more leisurely approach to the mid week and to allow
time for the support slots. Whilst we run separate Late Late shows
at 11 pm each week night we do let the existing customers stay on
if they want to so there’s no clearing the room. However in our
ongoing ambition to attract all the major jazz stars to the club,
especially the ones we can’t really afford, we sometimes have to
change things, so when the opportunity comes along to have say
Cassandra Wilson or say Wynton Marsalis performing, as we have
in July, we have to do what it takes to make it work. And that means
doubles all round.
What we do have planned for all of you who can’t get into the
Wynton shows (22 to 24 July) is a webcast. We will be utilising our
high spec cameras and in- house edit suite (facility all available for
hire by the way) to send one of the shows live and direct off around
the world via Ronniescotts.co.uk. Check the website and the mail
outs for details of which exact show we will broadcast. We are rather
excited about the plan, which will be a first for the club.
July and August are choc full of talent, from the amazing Brazilian
big band SpokFrevo, and the drummer Chris Dave with his 6 snare
drums, to vocalese legend Jon Hendricks, Jazz ingénues GoGo
Penguin and the scary genius that is Ginger Baker. It is one of the
most varied line ups we have put together for some time. Highlight?
It’s a toss up between Jon Hendricks’ sailor’s hat and Hermeto
Pascoal’s sewing machine.

Presenting a Brazilian big band sensation. Fronted by musical director/
saxophonist Maestro Spok, this 17-musician outfit-saxophone, trumpet,
trombone, rhythm sections, bass, and guitar-draws inspiration from
frevo, a vibrant music of elaborate arrangements and deep roots. The
SpokFrevo Orquestra consistently pushes musical boundaries by
texturing Brazilian tradition with complex jazz improvisation, reinventing
tradition without subverting it as Recife's most amazing big band beats
time to the rhythm of the carnivals of North-East Brazil.

Grammy Award-Winning vocalist Diane Schuur has earned respect and
garnered praise from such legendary musicians as Dizzy Gillespie, Count
Basie and B.B. King. Known for her three-and-a-half octave vocal range,
vocalist/pianist Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. A longtime
disciple of Dinah Washington and the other legendary jazz singers of the
‘40s and ‘50s, Schuur who was mentored by the great Stan Getz, has built
a stellar career by embracing not only the jazz of her parents’ generation,
but also the pop music of her own youth during the late 1950s and ‘60s.

Jon Batiste is considered by many to be one of the most exciting and
progressive new talents on the scene today. A “Movado Future Legend”
award recipient, and a “Steinway Performing Artist”, Jon has performed
in innumerable prestigious events and venues across the world and was
last seen at Ronnies as a member of Wynton Marsalis band and he
appears here with is own highly acclaimed group Staying Human.

One of the most revered and in demand musicians of his
generation, Chris Dave’s eccentric approach to the drum set and
his ability to adapt to any musical setting, whether jazz, hip-hop or
R&B, has put him in a category of his own. He first came to the jazz
audiences attention as part of Robert Glasper’s trio and it his
formidable ability to draw on jazz, funk, hip-hop and even gospel
music that makes him such an extra-ordinary drummer and has
seen him perform with a who’s who of modern music from
D’Angelo and Lupe Fiasco to Wynton Marsalis and Beyonce.

incomparable Cassandra Wilson. Well known for her blues, soul, pop
covers, and jazz standards, her smoky alto bends almost everything to
its will. Wilson's phrasing is utterly unique, as original as any horn
player's or pianist's music and she is a devastating live performer who
brings a sense of total engagement to everything she sings. These
unique small club shows are quite simply unmissable and Wilson
appears with a superb band

One of the most extraordinary, charismatic young pianists, composers
and band leaders to explode from Cuba in recent times. He wowed
audiences as a member of Buena Vista Social Club, co-produced Ibrahim
Ferrer’s last album with Nick Gold, and his debut album Zamazu was
released to global acclaim. An explosive pianist, Fonseca’s dazzling music
draws on the traditions of Cuban music but he brings the lyricism of
Herbie Hancock and the drive of McCoy Tyner to his music as well as an
unparalleled gift for melody.

themselves prefer fusion-progressive the fact is that no one explores the
space between jazz and rock with the fearsome, virtuoso panache of
Tribal Tech the powerhouse unit formed in 1984 by guitarist Scott
Henderson and bassist Gary Willis. Recently re-united after time off for
solo projects expect powerful, rocking jazz-fusion of the highest order
from a band of poll-winning superstar virtuosos and appearing here in
support of new album X.

Led by trombonist and composer/arranger Callum Au, this jazz ensemble
features some of the hottest young jazz soloists and composers on the
British scene. This concert features the London premiere of Callum's new
West Side Story suite, a work in six movements based on the music from
Leonard Bernstein's famous show. The suite features guest vocalist Emma
Smith and a male singer Iain McKenzie.

Hermeto Pascoal, charismatic composer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist
and musical visionary makes a rare club appearance playing his uniquely
intoxicating blend of jazz, rock and Brazilian music. Described by Miles
Davis as “one of the most important musicians on the planet” and
nicknamed the ‘Sorcerer’, he is a unique musician and composer whose
work has been a profound influence on British jazz musicians. He is as
likely to produce a piece for kitchen utensils as to improvise solos on
keyboard or flute - or be found leading his long established, infectiously
swinging Brazilian band through his fiendish, brilliant always original
music. A true one-off these rare intimate shows are unmissable.

Wynton Marsalis back to the club for these exclusive intimate shows.
Marsalis is an internationally acclaimed musician, composer,
bandleader, educator and a leading advocate of American culture.
He has had an enormous impact on jazz over the last 40 years,
being one of the first artists to perform and compose across the full
jazz spectrum from its New Orleans roots to bebop to modern jazz.
By creating and performing an expansive range of brilliant new
music for quartets to big bands, chamber music ensembles to
symphony orchestras, tap dance to ballet, Marsalis has expanded
the vocabulary for jazz and created a vital body of work that places
him among the world’s finest musicians and composers.

World-class, poll-winning, Wes Montgomery influenced jazz and
fusion guitarist. Nicknamed Mr Fingers, with a career stretching back
to the mid-70s who has explored jazz, classical, fusion, Brazilian,
blues and instrumental pop music, picking up 19 Grammy Award
nominations along the way. Joined here by his longtime friend and
collaborator Dave Grusin on keys, bassist Melvin Davis (or Tom
Kennedy) and drummer Chris Coleman. Expect classy, sophisticated
contemporary music of the highest order.

electrifying Blues Explosion specialises in blues music from Chicago to the
Delta, West Coast and British. Expect blues classics from Eric Clapton, BB
King, Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Albert King, Peter Green,
Howlin' Wolf, Robert Cray amongst others.

figure in the ‘60s avant-garde, Sanders’ post-Coltrane recordings
have explored more spiritual sounds and his anthemic ‘You’ve Got To

Ronnie Scott’s has the pleasure in welcoming the genius in vocalese and
improvisation and true innovator for this spectacular four night residency Mr Jon Hendricks. Offering a very different take on the art of jazz singing,
Hendricks is credited with the invention of vocalese, a technique wherein the
singer puts words to the instrumental lines of already existing songs that
often results in a hugely impressive display of vocal control and dexterity.

Legendary British jazz funk and acid-jazz band, led by Jean-Paul
'Bluey' Maunick, whose jazzy grooves, soulful vocals and funky horn
riffs helped open the door for bands such as Jamiroquai and the
Brand New Heavies. With over thirty years in the business Incognito
remain a formidable live act and a real club favourite!

Also regarded as one of the finest scat singers in jazz history, Hendricks
composed the lyrics for Georgie Fame’s smash hit Yeh Yeh lyrical
arrangements for the album Vocalese by jazz vocal group Manhattan
Transfer, which went on to win 7 Grammy Awards, including one for
himself as ‘Best Singer’. Perhaps more important however, is the fact
that he is still regarded, at the age of 91, as one of the finest, most
influential and most innovate singers ever in jazz, or indeed any other
type of music - his appearance at Ronnie Scott’s is an unmissable
opportunity to witness a master in action

Sublime, Galway born torch singer Mary Coughlan is one of Ireland’s most
well-known singers. Her first album, Tired and Emotional sold 100,000
copies in Ireland alone and its successor, Under the Influence, confirmed
Coughlan as a singer capable of making every song she sings her own. On
this, her “Best Of” tour, one of just eleven UK dates celebrating 25 years in
the business, Mary draws on and inspired by her own battles with addiction
and abuse and interspersed with witty anecdotes and black humour.
João Bosco is one of Brazil’s most compelling singer-songwriters. With his
music rooted in Brazil's classic samba and bossa nova traditions, he
combines rock, jazz and other ethnic styles in an eclectic brew that is as
inventive and challenging as is he. With his career rise coinciding with
Brazil's military dictatorship (1964-1985) his work was frequently censored
and in 1977 he wrote his most personal protest song, "O Bebaido e a
Equilibrista" (The Drunkard and the Tightrope Walker), which became the
theme song of Amnesty International. As an artist that rarely leaves Brazil
for extended periods but known as a dynamic performer, it is therefore
with great pride that Ronnie Scott’s welcomes his club debut in a special
show that celebrates 40 years as a performer.

A very welcome return after last year’s amazing sold out shows for
Booker T Jones (of Booker T and the MGs fame). It is now over 50 years
since, Green Onions, the 12-bar blues with a rippling Hammond Organ
line was recorded by Booker T & The MG’s for Stax. Booker T went on to
become one of the architects of the unique Memphis soul sound and over
the next decade, Booker T & the MG’s played on hundreds of recordings
by artists such as Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave
and many others, alongside many other titles under their own name.

mammoth improvisation sessions and honed in local gigs, their music is
delivered with a captivating swagger and greedy energy that is utterly
beguiling and packs a hook-laden punch.
Hotly tipped as the rising stars of UK Jazz by The Times newspaper, the
expansive, brilliant Manchester based piano trio GoGo Penguin play in
support of their debut album, Fanfares on Matthew Halsall’s Gondwana

Famed for their upbeat, energetic live shows, British jazz-funk stalwarts,
and hugely influential jazz/pop cross over stars, the James Taylor Quartet
return to Ronnie Scott’s. Taylor’s driving Hammond organ has been leading
the group for nearly twenty years, and the band show no signs of slowing
down. Their relentlessly entertaining tunes take their inspiration from
boogaloo funk of the sixties and the rare-groove style funk of the seventies.
Joined here by soulful vocalist Yanney and a punchy horn section for an
exciting night of funky jazz and down home grooves.
