INTRODUCTION
The Chippewa Valley Cultural Association, Inc. started with a group of dreamers who saw
something in the old, broken down building that once housed the McDonell Memorial Catholic
High School on the East Hill of Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. When

be. It wasn’t until they linked arms with their pragmatic friends
Clarence Stoffel,
and neighbors and got started that the wider community started

to see and share their vision. It took a lot of hard work, heavy
fundraising, and the creative input of many people to bring the
dream to fruition. Many people didn’t believe it would happen – even those actively involved
in the restoration. Despite the challenges, the dream of restoring the building to its previous
glory was finally accomplished, but the story of creating a community arts center still goes on.

This annual report reflects on the accomplishments and challenges of the past fiscal year
(December 1, 2013 to November 30, 2014) as a basis from which to grow and improve in the
future.
ACTIVITY OVERVIEW
Each year, there are more people involved in the CVCA/Heyde Center and seeking to
collaborate on new and exciting initiatives. Demand for building space has increased
significantly each year as evidenced by the number of occupancy days.

High building occupancy.
Attendance numbers seem to be at the same level as last year, but it is challenging to estimate
the number of people coming in for facility rentals, fundraisers or community events that are
not directly overseen by the CVCA/Heyde Center through the sale/collection of tickets or
reservations. The number of performances was slightly less than in previous years but this
reduction in performance attendance was offset by the new Paint-a-Palooza classes and an
increase in people participating in Facility Rental and other community events.

PERFORMANCES
The Heyde Center for the Arts hosted 44 unique performing arts events (music, theater, dance,
etc.), twelve visual art exhibits, and 32 community development activities (health and
educational gatherings) during the 2013 - 2014 Fiscal Year.
Of the performing arts events, 48% of them were local performers, 14% were regional
performers (western Wisconsin area), 27% were national performers and 11% were
international performers. There was a wide variety of arts programming including music,

theater, dance, book signings and readings, food artisans, acrobats, science/art educational
programs (“bubble-ologist” and a laser light show), storytellers, and a mentalist.
ART SHOWS/EXHIBITS
All of the visual art exhibits and the community development activities featured local artists
and participants. Nearly 100 local artists exhibited their artwork at the 50th Annual Spring Art
Show in April 2014. In addition, there was a school district wide exhibit showcasing artwork
from the public schools in March 2014. The CVCA works with individual artists and groups of
artists to offer exhibition opportunities to hundreds of local artists each year.
PAINT-A-PALOOZA
This year the CVCA/Heyde Center introduced an adult art education series loosely called the
“Paint-a-Palooza” series. The goal of the series was to offer simple, introductory art classes for
adults interested in learning how to paint. In 2013 - 2014, the CVCA offered nine art classes.
One hundred sixteen people participated in these art classes from June to November. The
teachers (mainly members of the Valley Art Association) donated their talents and skills to
teaching the class – and the CVCA provided the materials. It started with acrylics and
watercolor painting, and now has expanded into other forms of creative impression including
pastels, charcoal, wood carving, wood turning, silk painting, and ceramics. Evaluations from
the workshops have been overwhelmingly positive – both the classes and the instructors. The
students recommended that some classes needed to be longer, and they want more classes.
REVENUE
As a historic community arts center, the Heyde Center for the Arts is an important part of the
economic vitality of Chippewa Falls downtown. Every $1 spent on tickets for an event at a
community arts center generates an additional $6 of cash flow into the local economy via hotel
accommodations, area dining, and consumer retail purchases. This past year, the CVCA/Heyde
Center generated over $72,000 in ticket revenue, which translates to around $430,000 of cash
inflow to the local economy.
Non-profit arts and cultural organizations in the U.S. obtain their revenues from three major
sources: (a) earned income, (b) philanthropic contributions from private donors, and (c) direct
government subsidies. Earned income — composed of program service revenues (ticket sales,
admissions, subscriptions, program ads, and gift shop sales) along with investment income and
dues and assessments — account for approximately one-half of all revenue. Contributions from
private donors (individuals, foundations, and corporations) account for about two-fifths.
Government sources provide the remaining roughly one-tenth of revenue1.
For several years, the CVCA/Heyde Center has pursued a diversified funding base and, unlike
many other arts organizations, 68.9% of the CVCA/Heyde Center is from earned income
revenue. The remaining 31.1% of the CVCA budget comes from philanthropic donations,
foundation grants, and two small state government grants – nothing from the city or county

governments. Philanthropic funds are critical to ensure that the CVCA/Heyde Center remains a
community arts center – keeping it accessible to the needs of local groups and individuals as
well as providing affordable arts and cultural opportunities.
Many people do not understand that the cost of a ticket does not cover all the costs associated
with an event (such as the performance fees, and the costs of marketing/promotion, staffing,
ticketing, and heating/cooling/lighting) much less the ongoing maintenance and repairs of a 108
year old building.
The CVCA/Heyde Center is committed to supporting access to a high class performing arts
stage and gallery space to area performers and artists. However excluding many of the area’s
residents due to high ticket costs is counterproductive to the mission and vision of the
CVCA/Heyde Center. Therefore the CVCA/Heyde Center solicits community funds to help
keep its vision of serving as a community arts center alive and active.
There were eight main sources of income for the CVCA (FY2012-2013).
 Donations – individual contributions, gifts in honor of/in memory of someone, special
project gifts that are donor restricted for specific capital projects or programs (19.5%)
 Fundraising Activities – dinners, donations, and silent auction at the Savoring the Arts,
and donations and product raffles at Taste of the North (6.2%)
 Rental Services – auditorium and other small room rental, beverage services, and other
facility fees for assorted services (19.5%)
 Program Services – art sales and art shows, box office revenue, concession sales,
entertainment package sponsors, gift certificates/entertainment package passes (43.9%)
 Memberships – annual membership subscriptions (3.3%)
 Other revenue sources – merchandise sales, miscellaneous (0.4%)
 Grants – designated funding from philanthropic and corporate foundations to support
projects (2.2%)
 Endowment Distributions – funds received from CVCA Endowment Funds (5.1%)

EXPENSES
Although the inflation rate is not considered high, the costs of goods and services still increase
from year to year. The staff and volunteers continually seek ways to streamline systems, do
more through collaborations, review existing service contracts, research product prices, and
increase work efficiency.
Overall, operating expenditures during the past year did not significantly change from previous
years. The CVCA/Heyde Center has a policy that outside of emergencies, any major capital
projects are fully funded before the work is started or the materials are purchased. This is to
ensure that normal operating fund cash flows are not adversely affected if a capital project is
not fully funded.
Expense Categories
There are eight main expenditure categories:
 Member Services/Administration – personnel costs associated with membership,
administration of the day-to-day operations, communication costs, etc. (16%)
 Insurance – insurance to cover the building, workman’s compensation, and
board/executive staff (3%)
 Program Services – performance fees, commissions, concessions purchases, personnel,
and other costs (stage, hotels, hospitality) associated with programming (35%)
 Facility Rental Costs – bartending services, bar supplies and inventories, personnel
costs associated with facility rentals, marketing, communication costs (14%)
 Building Maintenance and Repairs – various service contracts such as elevator, security
and fire systems/monitoring, system maintenance and repairs, utilities, improvements,
etc. (13%)
 Publicity and Advertising – paid advertising and production of publicity materials
(12%)


Fund Raising – costs associated with fundraising events such as Savoring the Arts and
Taste of the North (5%)
Sales Tax – sales tax on tickets, concessions, rental services, and merchandise (2%)

EVALUATIONS
PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS
Starting in October 2014, the CVCA/Heyde Center committed to collecting short, written
evaluations that were either on the tables (with cabaret style seating), handed out by the
ushers/ticket takers, or put into event programs. The feedback has been very positive – the
audience members offered wonderful suggestions for improvements, ideas for future
performances, and compliments on the things that went well.
Although it was just the beginning, there were 108 surveys returned and some of the results
were surprising. Thirty-nine percent of the people who turned in a survey said it was their first
time at the Heyde Center for the Arts. Ninety percent of the replies said that the performance
met or exceeded their expectations. The bulk of the ten percent of people who felt that the
performance fell short of their expectations came from a single performance where there were
some challenges with the sound board.
A high percentage (99%) felt that it was easy to purchase and pay for tickets. Ninety-six percent
of the people surveyed felt that the refreshments offered were adequate. Despite some
challenges, 89% of the people responding felt that the performances met or exceeded their
expectations. Perhaps even more important is that 99% of the audience members would
recommend the Heyde Center for the Arts to a friend or family member.
ZIP CODE ANALYSIS
The CVCA/Heyde Center for the Arts has been collecting zip code information from people
purchasing tickets online, at the CVCA office or at the box office throughout the fiscal year. The
zip codes are collected per order and not per ticket sale; however it allows the organization the
chance to extrapolate trends in the geographic distribution of its audience members.
This information is collected in order to better understand the geographic distribution of Heyde
Center audiences for marketing and promotional purposes as well as one indicator of the
geographic impact of Heyde Center’s programming.

LOCAL ECONOMIC IMPACT
Far from being a luxury entertainment for the rich, a vibrant cultural scene helps our
community thrive with the added economic activity that surrounds the arts - restaurants,
parking, clothing, transportation, childcare, hotels, and more... driving over $13,000 dollars of
local tax revenue into the city, another $15,000 into state tax revenue, and over $770,000 in total
economic activity (Arts & Economic Prosperity IV calculator, Americans for the Arts).
The CVCA/Heyde Center boasts annual arts and cultural attendance of about 11,000 people,
and close to 12% of that attendance is by non-Chippewa Valley residents. As noted in the zip
code analysis, the Heyde Center for the Arts is contributing to making Chippewa Falls a tourist
destination.

VOLUNTEERS
Over 220 CVCA volunteers contributed approximately 12,000 hours over the past year to the
Heyde Center for the Arts. It is important that we recognize individuals who dedicate their
time, talents, and energy to making a
The Difference Between a Center for the
difference in our community.
The Independent Sector, a non-partisan
leadership network for nonprofits,
foundations, and corporations committed to
advancing the common good, estimates the
value of volunteer time in Wisconsin is
$21.78/hour. This comes to an estimated
$261,360 of volunteer labor contributions per
year to performing essential tasks for the
Center including: publicity, front of house
duties (selling tickets, ushering, etc.),
directing and acting in community theater
productions, completing important building
maintenance and repairs, and fundraising.
Arts and a Community
Arts Center
It was a warm Friday evening, in the middle of
March. I was sitting at one of the tables in the
auditorium with a friend, watching Jake Armerding
and the Aeromatics play sweet melodies.
After they finished their current song, Jake came up
to the microphone to introduce their next piece.
Before he did, though, he said something interesting
to the audience: he said that he had been welcomed
back to the Heyde Center by everyone with so much
warmth, that he felt like he had become part of the
family. When he said everyone, it was clearly
directed at both the audience and those
volunteering that night.
Anna Phillips, CVCA Intern
We try to recognize all the volunteers that
have contributed their time to the success of
the CVCA/Heyde Center for the Arts, but we
realize that this is a nearly impossible task because so many people are involved in so many
different areas. We have listed event volunteers, the board of directors, spring art show
volunteers, but there are many other unique ways that people contribute their time and talents
to the Center.
For example, there are a number of performers who volunteer their time (Chill on the Hill,
Swampers, vendors at Taste of the North), fund raising volunteers (such as: Deanne Rubenzer,
Lisa Gienapp, Sue Holm, Pam Holsinger-Fuchs, ChiHi and McDonell students, etc.), Barb Buker
(organizing the costume closet), Don Bichner and Phil Grosvold (flag maintenance), tech
support (Jeremy Westin, Joel Wiltrout, Allison Leef), and the Lake Wissota Garden Club (flower
arrangements).
