Our Family Portrait Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando 2011 Annual Report Dear Friends, The past year was a year of change for our JFS family. After many years of successful leadership, Barry Kudlowitz retired and Eric Geboff assumed the responsibility of leading the agency as Executive Director. Carrying on the mission of JFS, to prevent homelessness and hunger in our community, is an honor for Board members and staff. As we look forward, the two biggest challenges facing the agency are cuts in funding and greater demand for services. These are a testament to the changing economy and strategic planning was necessary. The good news is that we are in the business of helping those affected by hard times and a faltering economy. We are experienced at overcoming obstacles and creating opportunity. Our goals are motivated by the people we serve and the need for services provided by JFS has never been greater. More families knock on our doors, not just for the necessities of life – food and shelter – but also to roll up their sleeves and to volunteer their time. So while reduced funding may reflect signs of an economic slump, individuals and groups have rallied to support the work we do and help the greater good of the community. Our appeal to you is to join us in our work. Conduct a food drive at your office or among family and friends; make a donation to support our work with seniors; volunteer for a few hours a week in one of our Food Pantries; help engage your child to help with a school or bar/ bat mitzvah project; collect holiday toys or food for families that do not have the means to celebrate; or serve on one of our many Board committees. The opportunities are limitless and all that you need to do is contact us! JFS has served individuals and families in the community for the past 34 years and despite the current economic environment, is strong, and will be so for many years to come. We will continue to be a place of hope for everyone who comes in the door. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors at JFS, thank you for your on-going support of JFS. That support is priceless. Anne Frank 3 The Center for Counseling, Growth and Development . . . encompasses individual, family and group counseling. JFS is one of the few remaining agencies that operates on a sliding-fee scale to help meet clients’ needs, despite their financial means. Medicare and select insurance providers are accepted to provide continuum of care for our clients. All counselors are licensed and have Master’s degrees in Mental Health Counseling, Clinical Social Work or Marriage and Family Therapy. Dear JFS, Thank you so much for helping my family when my husband lost his job. I don’t know how we would have survived without the pantry. Christine C. Emergency Assistance . . . includes traditional financial aid for rent, mortgage and utilities in a one-time assistance program as well as the distribution of food through the Pearlman Pantry at our Winter Park office and the Darden Restaurants Foundation Pantry at our Southwest Orlando office. Caseworkers receive more than 110 telephone calls per day for help. In 2011, food for nearly 98,000 meals was provided for families and individuals in need. During the same period, JFS experienced a 17% increase in requests for emergency financial assistance. Other programs through Emergency Services include Get Caught Caring, our annual holiday food and toy drive, which distributed more than 700 toys to children in need this past holiday season and provided $7,000 in holiday meals. School Matters is a back-to-school supply drive to help students start school on the right foot. The Family Stabilization Program (FSP) . . . is a preventative, solution-based, long-term case management program designed to increase self-sufficiency in low-income families through intensive 6-month case management and education. FSP helps to improve money management skills, employability and job security, family functioning, parenting skills, emotional coping abilities and improve or maintain current housing status. Dear JFS, My son’s behavior at home has really improved since he enrolled in the KidsKonnect program at school. We are getting along so much better. Thank you. Helena R. 4 In 2011, 81% of the families participating in the program were given a certificate of completion. From the clients enrolled, 84% were either employed or gained employment as a result of the FSP program. Of the participating families, 31% enrolled in GED or college courses to further their education. In terms of housing, 89% were able to maintain their current housing status through assistance and 12% moved to either more affordable or safer housing. The Roth Family KidsKonnect Program . . . is a supportive, educational group program developed for children experiencing family disruption. Trained counselors hold group sessions within school settings to help children cope with the stresses and emotions of their families’ changes. In 2011, more than 650 students from 36 public elementary and middle schools in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties participated in the KidsKonnect program. d: ide v o r p S F J In 2011 Community Services . . .
