members for our annual placemat drive. On
December 2nd, 160 were delivered to the Meals on
Wheels Langley office, which supplies meals to
clients throughout Langley and Aldergrove. The
staff was happy to receive these ‘mini-quilts.’

Hello, ladies.
Quite a few of you were following my trip last Fall when I went to Europe with
my Sister and her Sister-In-Law……………What I thought I’d like to share
with you is the backside of this story! (or perhaps better known as WHY I
HATE PUBLIC TOILETS!
It doesn’t seem to really matter where in the world I travel – I am always
amazed by the inability of all the smart people in this world to not be able to
maintain a sensible, clean, accessible toilet!
Try France for instance – I’ve never managed to go to the bathroom for less
than 20 Euros. You absolutely have to go into a restaurant and buy the
cheapest drink available (20 Euros) in order to use a toilet. I mean have you
seen the PUBLIC toilets in France? What about Germany with the inspection
shelf? (What else can it be for?). Then there is Mexico where the idea of
putting the toilet paper into the toilet is going to stop the whole ecosystem of
the Yucatan Peninsula, and there are women selling you squares of toilet
paper for a US $1.00 per square.
Twenty-five years ago in England I went to use a toilet in Harrods. The price
then was the equivalent of $2.50. I was too cheap to pay, so my cousin
marched me over to the attendant and announced in a loud voice that he was
going to ‘treat’ me to a pee for a quid! Mind you I will say that once I got in
there they even had a selection of perfumes to spritz yourself with on leaving.
And then there was the dreaded chain in England! It NEVER worked! You
could pull it till you were blue in the face, and nothing would disappear!
What about the scary places where there are only the footprints on the floor
and a hole facing you – a couple of hand-holds so you don’t fall down, and
the need for a nimble escape once you flush so you don’t get your shoes
wet? I’ve also been in one in central London that actually seals itself up after
you finish and totally spray washes the whole place. It’s so wet inside that
you daren’t let your jeans touch the floor!
In Europe even McDonald’s has gotten wise to the fact that the public wants
to use their toilets – so they put a coded lock on the door, and you can’t just
nip in and use the ‘loo’ anymore without first buying something—or if you are
lucky the person coming out might deign to let you in for free!
So then we get closer to home. When did it become so difficult to actually
flush a toilet that they had to be automated? I was in a loo in Washington
recently, and it flushed FIVE times while I was sitting on it! Or else they won’t
flush – and you then end up standing there waving your arms around like a
mad woman trying to get the sensor to notice the fact that you are done, and
would like to leave at some point.
Also what about the fact that the enormous toilet paper dispensers always get
mounted so low on the wall that they get in the way of your left hip if you
weigh any more than 100 lbs……and when you try to pull on the toilet paper
from that angle it comes out mushed up to the size of a ticker tape?
Why also is it that the sink is usually dirtier than the toilets, and if you get near
it you are going to get absolutely soaked by the gallons of water left on the
counter?
I must say though in defence of the toilets – I do get rather amused by the
new Dyson hand dryers that make your skin stretch into funny shapes! That
generally leaves me chuckling!

LQG Sit ‘N Stitch
Community Quilt #1
The completed quilt
The blocks
The blocks on the design wall
Many talented hands contributed to the construction of this Community Quilt.
Pat L. (#395) and Joanne R. (#379) cut the fabric and bagged up the pieces for distribution to
the Sit ‘N Stitch attendees. The attendees then helped construct the blocks.
Pat put the quilt together, and Joanne long-armed it. To thank the members who contributed
their time and talent, Pat and Joanne personally donated prizes for a draw.
Thank you, Pat and Joanne, for your continued generosity!

Guest speaker: Faith McLeod. The topic is her trunk show.
Faith McLeod once walked into Wineberry Fabrics hoping that they carried cross-stitching supplies
but instead was captivated by "those beautiful bolts lining the walls like a luscious rainbow". That
was 23 years ago and she has been hooked on quilting ever since.
"I love all types of quilting. Traditional pieced, appliqué, pictorial...I started out as a committed
hand quilter and eventually started machine quilting just to see if I could do it."
Faith has taught quilting in local stores and tried her hand at juried shows. Most recently, her
journey is in transition as she purchased a long arm machine and hung a shingle to start her
quilting business.
Join us for Faith's trunk show and lecture as she shares her wonderful and award winning
creations. The event will be reminiscent of an archaeological dig as she travels through the layers
of fabric and time to reveal a glimpse of her quilting journey.
The winter quilt was pieced by
Bonnie Roth and quilted by Faith.
The other two quilts were pieced and
quilted by Faith.

PAUL KRAMPITZ on the MOSAIC MODERN QUILT.
(Room still left in this workshop with Paul.)
Paul was our wonderful guest program speaker in August. He grew up with quilts that his
grandmothers made for him on both sides of his family. Paul started quilting in the ’80s and in
2005 evolved from traditional to, eventually, in 2010, modern, when he joined the
Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild.
Come and enjoy being coached and guided by Paul into the Mosiac Modern Quilt that will be

Wall Decor Trend Alert
The January 2nd edition of The Globe
and Mail has an article on design
trends and this item made my heart
beat faster:
“The newest trend in wall decor,
modern quilts, is increasingly
ubiquitous...these attractive blankets
in geometric patterns look
handsomest suspended from a thick
wooden dowel over a sofa or next to a
staircase...and unlike its decor trend
predecessor, the macramé wall
hanging, these throws will easily
transfer to the base of your bed
should you want to hang up
something more solid in the future.”

QUILT SHOW GIFT SHOP
We are now collecting items for our grab bags and are looking for fabric (hopefully fat 1/4's) and
any sewing notions (threads, etc). We're also looking for any new brown paper lunch bags you
may have.
Now that Christmas is over, hopefully you'll also have time to start making some items to sell in
the Gift Shop. If you need ideas, Pinterest has lots.
We also sell quilting magazines, but these are ONLY collected on the collection
day of the show and NOT before as they're too heavy. But please start sorting
through your magazines and putting aside those you'd like to donate.
Thank you in advance.

“WAITING FOR NANA"
60" x 70"
This adorable children's quilt is the featured item for our Crazy Auction at our upcoming
quilt show in May. It would be perfect as a wall hanging for a nursery or as a quilt for a
child's bed. The three bunnies are so sweet as they wait for their nana by the garden gate
underneath an umbrella protecting them from falling leaves. The little pockets on the
rabbits' overalls are real - just perfect for storing little treasures.
The quilt was pieced and appliquéd by Lana Kettley and Nora Fursevich, quilted by Shelley
Gawley, and the fabrics were donated by guild members. The pattern, which was designed
by Arlene Neeley, was purchased from Rabbits Haven.
Be sure to visit the Crazy Auction area at the quilt show and buy a raffle ticket for this
beautiful quilt!

The LQG show and our raffle quilt
are highlighted on the Electric Quilt Company website!
The Electric Quilt Company site includes photos of the Guild’s raffle quilts and states:
“Our EQStitch guru, Yvonne Menear, recently let us know about a quilt raffle in which she used
EQ (of course). Yvonne says, “The design was created in EQ7 by myself and I worked with
another member, Debra Sanderson, to promote the quilt with the members. The members took
the paper pieced patterns I created in EQ7 and stitched the blocks with the fabrics chosen by
Debra and myself. We then took the blocks the members constructed and made the quilts. Of
course, we knew exactly how it would turn out because it was designed in EQ7. The members
had a great time trying to figure out what we were going to do with the blocks! The quilting was
done by Barbara Bettles and bound by Pat Lundgren, also members of our guild. The guild was
really happy to see the completed quilts presented at the November guild meeting. This is the
major fundraiser for the guild and we hope to raise several thousand dollars.”
Congratulations and good luck to Yvonne and the Langley Quilt Guild! The Langley Quilt Guild
show is May 6th and 7th 2016. You can find out more about it here.”

HELPFUL HINT
FOR
DECLUTTERING/RECYCLING THE CLOTHES IN YOUR CLOSET
If you'd like to reduce & recycle the number of items in your closet, this idea
might help. To start, hang all your clothes in your closet with the hangers
facing the opposite of how you ordinarily hang them (eg, point the hanger
top pointing towards you.) Once you use each item, re-hang it the other way
(have the hanger top pointing towards the wall). When the season is over,
you can easily see which items you've worn and which items were not, and
then recycle those unused items.
That way you don't have to rely on your memory!

Over the pre-Christmas rush, I do my best to avoid going to the mall. I
hate the business of it all; shopping isn't what Christmas is all about.
One day, as I was walking past the entrance to Sears, I encountered a
Salvation Army bell ringer. I had heard earlier that the Salvation Army
was very short on funds, so I looked in my handbag for a bill. The new
bills are so hard to fold, and, as I was faltering with getting it into the
small slot of the collection kettle, the ringer lady said to me: "Are you
from the Langley Quilters’ Guild?"
I was surprised at this question, wondering how on earth she thought
that, but I said, “Yes.”
She said she could tell from my blue LQG lanyard that was dangling out
of my purse! She then told me that she was a recipient of one of our
quilts at the Gateway of Hope. She had chosen a beautiful pink one and
absolutely loved it and really appreciated the work that our Guild does
for them there. She thanked me again and I am writing it here to thank
any of you who have made community quilts for our guild.
P.S. The lanyards are great advertising and this is proof!

LANGLEY QUILT GUILD T-SHIRTS
We will be offering our popular guild t-shirts for sale again, in time for our upcoming
spectacular quilt show in May. We all remember our last quilt show and how
wonderful it was to see all our members decked out in a "sea of blue"- not only a
great way to identify all our members, but also a helpful way for visitors to know who
was hosting this fabulous event.
So, for all our newer members, now is the time to order your t-shirts. The cost is $10,
prepaid with cash. They come in sizes from Small to 4X and are a nice weight cotton
with our guild logo embroidered on them. If you are organized, it would help if you
have your $10 in an envelope with your name and size desired on it as it often gets a
bit busy during meetings.
It would be nice if some of our guild members could wear their t-shirts at our January
meeting so that our newer members can see how they fit, etc.
Please see Penny Chan-Kent (#234) at our day and evening meetings this month to
order. I am at the BOM table during the day meeting. If you can't make the meeting,
you are welcome to contact me by email.
I'll take orders until March 15th, 2016, to ensure they arrive on time. This will be your
only chance to order this year.
Thanks so much.

Call for newsletter submissions
Do you find quilting inspiration in everyday objects? Do you see quilt blocks
everywhere? In a tile floor at the market, maybe, or in a pile of leaves, or on a
cathedral ceiling? If so, please send your photos to the newsletter before
February 3rd. We’d love to include them in next month’s issue. (Don’t worry if
you haven’t actually used your inspiration for a project; there will be no followup investigation.) If you’d like to add a little blurb as to why and/or how the
image inspires you, that’d be great, too.
Here are a few examples to get you started. The first photo is from an
advertisement for rooftop solar panels; the grid on the diagonal lines is an
interesting element that could be achieved with a plaid or with stitches. The
second photo is of a crane on a dock outside Copenhagen. The paint on the
crane demonstrates that colour and design can create a striking image - of a
giraffe, in this example - that easily overrides the object’s angular lines.
I look forward to your submissions!
